Sorting out Bad Handling and Wheel Alignment, Porsche 911, Pt. 1

  • This 78 Porsche 911 SC belongs to a customer. She had a turbulent life and underwent massive modifications, but her owner has brought her back on the right track as much as body and interior are concerned. Unfortunately till now, that had not been true for the suspensions. Literally, the wheels stood in different directions with far off values for camber, toe and caster. The handling was accordingly at the poor side of things.
    This is the first episode of a two-part series that deals with the rear axle, including the replacement of bushings, struts and torsion springs and the alignment of the height, camber and toe.

    Ahhh… the ballast of old repairs and modifications… love the effort you put into your voiceovers.
    I also really appreciate how much you show us the struggles associated to that ‘ballast’. It reminds us we are not suffering by ourselves when we are alone in our garage working on an old bolt for 2 hours.

    Well done. Been there many times myself. Even California cars get their spring plates stuck. I too choose not to re-vulcanize the new bushings. Very impressed with your alignment technique without a dedicated rack. That's a skill I have yet to develop. Your ratchets appear to switch opposite of mine? So few people don't understand how much test and measure, do it again it takes to get the alignment just right nor how influential the rear is on a regular car let alone a Porsche. Around here it nearly $200 for "toe and go" and customers wonder why a good alignment costs so much.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s always great if I get that sort of comments from pros.
      I actually use a rack for the alignment of the toe, but in this case I wanted to have it just precise enough to dare to go out on the road for some kilometres to get the new bushings settled. Hence not much of a technique, the line was only to support the eyeballing.

    Nice video great music and editing, as always One little remark on the technical side. Bringing rubber bushings in the vicinity of Fluid Film is not the smartest option, as to my experience Fluid Film has a tendency to destroy any rubber it gets in contact with. It softens it at makes it grow.After a few months of chemical exposure you might have another dead parrot in your driving train.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Oliver, thanks for the feedback.
      I read that all the time, but I have never experienced it myself. Even at direct exposure of my Carrera’s rubber bushings over a period of many weeks: no trace of any chemical reaction. I was beginning to think that it’s one of those classic car myths.
      What you say is personal experience or just an echo to what people write in forums? If it’s personal experience, can you provide me with pictures, data, samples …?

    • @oliverkoch2003
      @oliverkoch2003 Před 2 lety

      @@GreasyFingers Hi Greasy, it's based solely on my personal experience. I've corrosion-protected many Citroen DS and other 60s cars throughout the years and could observe the effect on returning customer/friends cars. especially on the body seals. And usually , in opposite to the French bodywork, the rubbers are of excellent quality.Maybe drive train bushes are not as prone to that effect, but I didn't, want to take risks after my observations. I think even Fluid Film states you should avoid contact with rubber in their technical sheets. So I developed my angle of attack, combining fluid Film and Mike Sanders. For slightly surface corroded cavities -no doubt - FF is the best, whereas for rubber contaminated spots I use the MS. I'll try to find some photo evidence in my archives or check at my personal 2000CS BMW that was fluid-filmed by its previous owner a few years ago😅.

      You’re right, Damion!
      It might either be a 911 with different badge and engine or an SC with non-flared fenders. You have to know that at some point in time this was a flat-nose super-wide conversion. In turquoise metallic!!!! 😫

      As for the year/model of the car, I was trying to see how the rear sway bars mounted, but I never got a good look. My car is a ‘77 and it has a sort of “pop-on” type of mount, rather than bolt-on. A large steel ball is mounted on the swing arm, and the sway bar end has a cup bushing that pops over it. Like a giant version of what you would see on a throttle linkage.
      But now you really have me curious about the model year. The VIN should tell you everything.

    You think you have problems. I couldn’t get rid of toe out on the rear wheels. Several mechanics and several alignment shops lied about the readings. The last one said it was my aftermarket adjustable spring plates, but is wasn’t. I actually had to enlarge the alignment slots on the spring plates for the toe adjustment. I had trouble removing one of the torsion bars. I had to drive it out from the opposite side. The whole problem stemmed from a bent torsion bar tube, and the car had two different trailing arms on it. I ended up diagnosing these problems myself, after the pros couldn’t figure it out. Although the tube is still a little bent. I constructed a strong bar and used a come along to pull the bar enough to get tow in at the back. I align with strings, and have the car set up right now. I installed aluminum trailing arms in place of the steel arms, adjustable spring plates and hollow bars, with poly bronze bushings and monoball trailing arm mounts. It is an Autocross car, but I do drive it on the street. It is a super lightweight , weighs in the 1700’s down from about 2240. I’m running aggressive suspension settings. Everything is fully adjustable and I can pull torsion bars out of the spring plates, by jacking up the side , removing a snap ring, and threading a bolt into the torsion bar and pulling it out. I enjoy your videos. I purchased Rod Emory’s alignment platform it will handle anything from the earliest 911’s up to RSR type cars. Hope you had a nice Christmas. Oh, I built a special 2.7 short stroke engine 66 crank with 93mm cylinders, and had California Motorsports build a custom 901 transmission, with all of their billet parts. Has a posi and close ratio gears. It’s scary fast, about 245 HP for 1700’s weight. If you would like to see the car coming back from a test drive, and first start up of the new engine, go to Rod Graff on You Tube. The first two videos are of the car. Of course it now has evolved quite a bit further

      @@GreasyFingers no, I just have those two videos on my you tube account. I do have quite a few pictures that I could share. I didn’t document on the internet because the car has been evolving for 15 or so years. Let me know if you want to see some pictures via email. The car actually won my PCA region concourses before I retired it from showing, and decided to start hot rodding it, and auto crossing. I haven’t competed in about 10 years, but the car was taking top time of the day before I did any serious mods. It has a whole new power plant and suspension, plus significant lightning.. I could send you some pictures of it on the alignment platform and some other pictures of the cars’ progress. I also have a 993 cab, in which I installed the BBS PSS10 adjustable coil over suspension. I then lowered the car, and aligned and corner balanced it. I went from stock 17” wheels and built custom 18” BBS E88 3 piece track wheels, that are much lighter and much wider than the stock. As far as the 69 car goes, I just removed the stock gas tank and filler assy. I have a few minor rust issues to deal with, on the fuel tank cavity, then it’s off to installing the new lightweight hot rod gas tank, 911R front fenders, and some work around the R rear bumper, where it is currently too long at the rear of the wheel wells (short body bumper on long body car).

On my trailing-arm BMW's, the camber is adjusted where Porsche stuck a torsion bar! I've since converted mine to coilovers with a much thicker 935 heim-jointed and absurdly named "spring" plate ... that no longer supports spring weight. It's now more capable of achieving the aggressive negative camber I need for track work.
