Hi Everyone, Well, FINALLY!! I think I have figured out the high and unstable idle. We go back through everything to see what I missed... Let me know your thoughts below!
The meter you use in troubleshooting this problem is a very useful tool. Can you tell me the make and model please.
Great job on patiently getting to the bottom of this issue.
@@bobboyle6649 Hi Bob, Here is a link: amzn.to/2zb629o It is ok... There may be some of better quality out there, but this is pretty reasonably priced. Thanks!
Beautiful day to be driving a convertible!
Yeah, sounds like they opened up the adjustment to make up for the clogged injectors!
You’re good!
Nice solve! I bet the injectors got clogged and it was running poorly so someone just adjusted the throttle instead of getting new injectors or getting them cleaned.
Franny, I am always so impressed with your troubleshooting skills. Heidi
The drive videos aren’t boring. 😊
I agree with you. There is nothing boring about any of their videos.
I don't own any of the cars featured on this channel but I love your calm methodical approach to trouble shooting Franny.
Thanks so much!
@@HeidiandFranny I'm looking to buy a classic air cooled VW Beetle and have been so inspired by your inspirational how to videos on maintenance and repairs. Thank you for your brilliant content. Love to you both from Yorkshire, United Kingdom x
Great to see you sort it out. I am very impressed with you perseverance and it paid off in the end.
Thanks so much Jeff!
Have you ever worked on a tiptronic transmission that jumps from manuel into automatic mode?
Well, congrats. Persistence pays off!
Lesson learned: in case of trouble always reset to base adjustments.
Have worked on these engines since new, here are several other things I always check when there are idle issues: 1- Make sure throttle linkage is adjusted correctly, and is allowing throttle butterfly to fully return to its stop. This requires checking from gas pedal to top of engine, and especially at the bellcranks on the side of the transmission and the top of the engine. 2- Make sure throttle butterfly stop screw is adjusted correctly. On this FI system it is not used to set idle, only to keep butterfly from wearing throttle bore when closing. 1/2 turn open is the proper adjustment. If one tries to correct a low idle using this screw, it will ruin the adjustment of the idle switch. 3- Make sure the idle switch is good and is adjusted properly. Surprised not to see this mentioned, as it can definitely cause idle to hunt if it’s not. It’s on the rear of the throttle housing and is adjusted by loosening and moving it. Easiest to adjust both stop and switch with the throttle housing off the engine. This is a bit of a tricky adjustment but info explaining the procedure is in the Porsche manual. 4- Check short rubber hose crimped onto left end of vacuum pipe which runs from the intake boot (btwn airflow meter and throttle housing) to the Y-shaped vacuum venturi for the power brakes. These deteriorate after 35 years and can leak. Great videos - wish I had your patience! Sorry I didn’t come across this video series before now. The older I get the more I learn!
Franny, I’m always impressed by the most important tool you use on your rebuilds-your brain! Your attention to detail and inquisitive method are informative and entertaining, keep up the great work! -Don
The genuine, continuous and thorough efforts finally paid off! Congrats Franny on the awesome results!
Thanks so much!
Franny you are a troubleshooting guru!
Congrats! Your ability to stay calm and focused is amazing. When I’m working on my cars I try to channel my inner Franny.
Love that! LOL!
Probably find the injectors were needing done and previous owner turned the idle up to keep it running.
Great to see the Porsche happy!!
I’m so happy for you that the 3.2 is idling normally. Your persistence is truly admirable. Great series!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy it :)
It’s always easy once you’ve figured it out!
Can be frustrating getting there though.
Great Job Franny. It's great to see a great engineer's process in action.
Nice job, I clicked this one fast!!! now you have a spare O2 sensor lol
...and maybe a spare coil as well ;)
Well done! Great learning for all viewers along the way.
It's a pleasure to hear this engine idling perfectly. Great job!
Love watching yr step down procedures to deal with issues. Thank you.
Well done Franny!
Nice work, can't beat logic, wins every time, keep up the good work
Great Job Franny!
Your knowledge is amazing, thank you from Portugal!
Well done H&F - you got it!!
satisfying fix :) - watch the long hair and moving parts such as fan belt
Fifty-five years ago I had one of the first Porsche 911s in the US, a 1966 model, chassis number 901180, the 180th 911 ever built. Six Solex carburetors (actually, two 3-barrel units sharing a common float bowl) and the only transistors in that entire car were in the Blaupunkt radio. I'd pull the engine and transmission out as a unit: Four mounting bolts, one fuel line, a throttle cable, a few wires, and a 10mm bolt to disconnect the shift linkage. It was a 10 minute job including the time spent putting the car up on jackstands. Those were sure simpler times.
You are a STAR Franny!
Hello Heidi and Franny's Garage,
This channel is FAR TOO underrated!
Very happy to see progress on such a beautiful 911 cabrio! And it is SO clean!....a testament to your will, skill, and attention to detail.
In my opinion, believe you hit the target on the coil replacement, but as often happens, there were other issues. Your diagnostics and detail with the idle control is priceless!
Keep posting! I will continue to follow and hope to introduce others to your channel.
PS: Get that scope out!
Cheers,
Mr .P
Thanks so much!! Will do on the scope. I have been studying all manner of graphs and such to get an idea what to look for :)
Excellent! I'm really pleased for you. I hope you've got a great sense of achievement from finally working it out. I've enjoyed all the videos in this series.
You have to love it when that puppy runs as smooth as a sewing machine !!!
You finally managed to fix it. I like how you pay so much attention to every detail. You work like a watchmaker.

Well done!!
My near mint 87 911 has
been sitting for 8 yrs. I’ve owned it for 28 yrs. Taking in next month to get road ready again. After watching all the episodes here I know what the shop will have to pay attention to, thank you.
That's great news. Best of luck on coaxing your sleeping beauty back to life :)
Great show, I have worked with engines on ships for over 20 years, In the past I have also worked with cars as hobby. Today I am behind a desk and I like the troble shooting, sometimes frustrating but so rewarding when solved!! Great work and you speak clearly so that a non english speaker understand 99,9% thank you!

Awesome, thank you so much!!
You guys are doing a great service with your channel and this project! I love cars, but don't currently own a Porsche (financially challenged with family), but that flat 6 is a thing of beauty. I would love to get my hands dirty on that engine, but the next best thing is watching you guys. Thanks again for taking us along on the journey.
Great progress!
Awesome job Franny! Thank you for sharing the ups and downs of projects like this! Some CZcamsrs would like it to appear nothing goes wrong in a project of this magnitude.
Well, 35 posts over the last few weeks and I am all caught up!! Not including the lemon drop ones! Well done Franny, persistence and your calm methodical approach paid off!
That was so satisfying. Glad you sorted it out.
Thanks so much!
Franny, you are a super star.
Impressive engineering work and sleuthing! This is a part of why I love this channel.
Thanks so much Jeff :)
it is such a beautiful car with character. nice to see it in good hands.
i had a 1972 WV Beatle for a few years. it was the older series with the slim back lights. it was great. but of course, a 6-cylinder engine is something else.
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎊🎊👏🎊👏🎊 I'm so happy for you

Thank you so much for everything you have shown us and for explaining it so clearly. There is no way you can learn this from just reading a manual.

Hi. What a very interesting fix! Been following this and glad you have finally found the issue, it’s been an absolutely fantastic learning curve, I could listen to you for hours 👌 thanks for this and all the videos and looking forward to the rest of the journey. All the best, Mark. 🇬🇧
Thanks so much!
Love your channel! I hope you see this comment. Your diagnosis of the idle being too high is spot on. I do have a couple observations for you. Yes- When the DME detects an engine speed over 1200 RPM and the throttle switch is in IDLE position it cuts the fuel to the injectors. This isn't really to prevent runaway- It is to save gas and cut emissions to zero when you take your foot completely off the throttle while driving while the engine RPM is above 1200.
It is still possible that a faulty ICV might still be the issue. I think this might be the case, as after you adjusted the idle on the throttle body and ran the DME in normal mode, the idle didn't seem that steady, and the engine was not running that smoothly.
An other issue is that when you disconnected the Oxygen Sensor the idle speed went up considerably. This means in open loop the system is running rich. In may even be running so rich that the DME can't completely adjust the AF ratio. An overly rich AF would also contribute to a high IDLE. When rich the O2 sensor will read around 0.9 volts, and when lean 0.2 volts.
It will be interesting to hear what you find from the shop when you have them check the O2 levels.
Nice job!😊
Awesome result will pass on the information to my project Mercedes mechanic
Another excellent video Franny!! Great detective work. Maybe you should work or teach at a specialized Porsche shop. You would get the job done.
