  • Welcome back to the Garage at Wingnut Manor! Ficarra gives you an update on the Porsche 928 dream car project. It's time for the 1985 Devek car to give up its goodies, and for them to be grafted onto the 1978 Euro car. John also gives a quick primer on the difference between a spoiler and a wing, as well as we find out the weight of the Porsche 914/6 IMSA GTU car!

This video almost has a classic Mythbusters/Bill Nye feel. Between the last Porsche racing history video and this video, there’s a whole lot of knowledge and passion on this channel, which can’t be faked. It’s a “I can’t wait to show you just how cool this thing is” feeling which is positive and interesting.
Other car channels can have a cynical, lowest common denominator, bread and circus feel, and this approach has a respect for the viewer’s intelligence that is rare in this space. Great stuff!

  • @stevewandel9317

The no side repeater thing is just a US (north America) thing, so those are not just found on Europeans models. Considering some of the other (wacky?) DOT requirements (eg the side facing lights at front & rear), and that the US has a lot of multilane high speed roads, that a side repeater isn't needed. For the rear fog, considered finding a British one (because it'll be on the other side of the number plate) and having 2? The lack of symmetry on the rear of Euro cars where the fog light was seemingly an afterthought upsets my OCD :p

Basically, they want you to upgrade your Porsche 928 up to a vehicle that will upgrade it to something that will get you up to 170mph. Forget it. You won't spend more than a minute at that speed. Enjoy your terrific 928 handling and suspension settings that will out handle even 911's at 99% of normal driving, and give you wonderful driving experiences in the real world. Unless of course you intend on going racing..... which 99.99% of you will never be doing.

I'm my humble opinion the best place for a side repeater (indicator / turn signal) is integral with the door mirror. This means that it's higher up and more visible, it means fewer holes in the sheet metal (less corrosion), easier to assemble, more aero, cleaner..... All wins!

For reference, I’m currently restoring a ‘79 euro spec. Probably gonna just leave it all original (engine wise), but I am contemplating putting headers on. *Possibly* one day doing the ‘85-‘86 5.0 hybrid swap?

The biggest minor issue that I have always had with US cars is the lack of an amber turn signal at the rear. People touch their brakes on the freeway, and if both rear lights can't be seen, everyone in the other lane hits their brakes just in case they're changing lanes. Such an easy fix just to put an amber lens in.

Despite popular belief, bigger brakes are NOT always better. Is more unsprung weight, that hurts the handling. Most cars come stock with brakes that can lock the wheels, hence the need for ABS systems. Vented perforated brake disks don't add to the braking force, just increase the heat dissipation capability, important for frequent braking at low speed. The 928 was meant to be a GT, so unless one went to the track, it had plenty brakes to cross the Alps and the Pyrenees in safety.
The best braking one can have is downshift to a lower gear and let the engine compression slow down the car without wearing the brake system. Those driving automatic, though luck.
