Hi, manual vs. automatic?
The manuals & automatics 928’s used to cost about the same until about 7-8 years ago….then social media started hyping up everything that’s a manual, so prices nearly doubled on manuals VS auto’s.
I like both, the automatics can be tuned to give VIOLENT shifts…over and over again 🙌💥 The manual does have more street credibility, especially on social media….they’re also more engaging. Drive both, I think you’ll find that condition is even more important than which transmission it has.

If a Porsche 928 is a person's favorite car i'm going to like that person no matter what. It's a sign of good, unique taste. I am upset with Hot Wheels for not having any 924's or 928's in their current line up, i collect on a smaller scale..lol

Porsche needs to reintroduce the 928 by making a 2-door Panamera with the V8. I’ve always preferred the 911, but have always rooted for the 928.

Fantastic video. Great information. I bought a 1981 928 in incredible shape a year ago and have since done a ton of mechanical work to make it a solid daily driver. It's in a rare colour, Chiffon White, too. If you're ever up in New Brunswick in Atlantic Canada, there's a car waiting for you to explore the region. No need for stupid rentals!

Cool review! I would have emphasized the importance of fuel line replacement as well (understood to be part of top-end refresh) and fuel pressure dampers/regulator. I have an 86.5 and I hope I never need to sell it.

I got a 80 928 5 speed for cheap 3 years ago. I learned how to drive manual in it. Despite my incompetency early on the car still never disappointed me. Even though reverse grinds every time it was selected, 1st just wont go in sometimes, 2nd just doesn't work most of the time 😅 The exhaust fell off twice, and it wouldn't pass smog until I realized the full emission system was missing. Clutch fan spins slow, pusher fan won't work. Dash is fully cracked... But the engine runs very strong. Car stays planted around bends. Rolling through the (35% operational) gearbox in the California canyons and LA highways is euphoric. The ownership experience is way better then my pervious newer cars. Parts are easy to find (comparing to my a 90's japanese car) Documentations are everywhere and the community is great and crazy smart. I found your channel 2 years ago and you helped me a lot. Watching this video I was like: Yeah the car DO vibrates rough and the engine mount IS very weak, and the boasters DO sag, and the doors DO rattle... Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! p.s. I always wanted to come to Miami!!
My first 928 was an early manual like yours, and 1st gear was also toast 🫠 In an odd way, I feel it made me a better driver because I was forced to focus….at least that’s what I keep telling myself 😆 These 928’s are lot’s of FUNNN! 💯🙌🙌

I would add change out any original radiator. Those oil coolers inside do not last forever and the dreaded mixing of radiator / engine oil / transmission oil is an expensive mess. Happened to my transmission in my '87 S4.

Thanks to your advice I am driving my uncle's 928 that I inherited fully confident. I agree with what you say, definitely gets a second wind in speed, must drive the car to get it! I was 14 years old when I learned to drive a manual in a 1982 porsche 928 that my dad imported because he could not find a manual for sale in the US at that time.
To this day its still a dream car, but I have been too hesitant to buy someone elses problems...

This week my 1983s euro (300bp) arrived. I just had a first drive around the block. What a rocket!!! i cannot believe some people call this a slower car to modern standards. In a rolling start with the kickdown it flies away ! What an absolute thrill to drive this car. I am also very happy with the standard exhaust on this car - to a point where I don’t understand why people start fooling around with aftermarket exhausts. It destroys the soul of the car. It is perfect as it is!!

Perception of 928 was really tainted by the early 219hp US engine with 3-speed auto. Porsche was crazy enough to gear it to 230km/h. Something irrelevant for US market. Imagine it is 1979 and you want to spend premium dollar on 928 with the most futuristic design in the whole world and it is only marginally faster then 5 year old 1974 Mercedes 450 SL your drug dealer drives around in. The is just not acceptable.
Imagine having 2/3 of the power of your car and accelerating from the stop in 3rd gear unless using kick-down to start in 2nd gear and you get close the performance of US 1978 car.
Most of the early 928’s were manuals. After the 4 speed auto was introduced, the ratios changed. Also remember that most cars at the time were slow… the Corvette only had 185hp.

Mine is an '81 S4 Euro, very excited to start driving it. Next up is putting the R12 freon, 100+ degrees in Texas 😅
R12 is the absolute best, it cools down the interior faster and runs at a lower pressure than R134a. If the front fan is working properly, it should be an IceBox even in the Texas weather 🥶
I would also bypass the heater valve, it never fully closes if everything isn’t working perfect. You don’t want the AC to be competing with the heater. I’ve seen people instal manual bypasses, so you can still have the option to use it in the winter

My second 928. The first written off while parked in town. The second I bought 12 years ago with 60,000ks on the clock in perfect condition. The first thing that broke was the bearings in the transaxle. Managed to rebuild, as new was going to be horrifically expensive. Had a pretty good run after that with just the normal maintenance, that was until I did the second cam belt which came at a cost because I had to replace all the cogs and extras. There were some grumblings about an oil leak, I think this was the rocker covers. Then an oil leak from a cracked sump which required engine out. All obvious additional stuff done including oil leaking from the rocker covers. During the process the mechanic wrecked the transmission, but when talking to the transmission specialist he said quite common for these Merc transmissions to fail after 160,000ks. Transmission rebuild. Car still not right, took it to another mechanic who sited dodgy workmanship, and where I thought the previous expense was high it was nothing compared to the further work done. Basically now aside from an actual engine rebuild, everything has been done including a refurbed air intake manifold, vacuum lines, fuel lines, thrust bearing, engine mounts, wiring looms, undercar metal protector, cat delete, etc. Only been out of the garage and it leaked air coolant and one of the coolant hoses had frayed. Car going in on Monday for the replacement of the 2 water houses up front. After this there cannot be anything else left to fix! So I guess the short story is that I have spent at least the purchase price on the large mechanical bills and that does not include normal maintenance over the term of ownership. These cars are now 33 years old and no matter how well you look after it, everything will eventually need replacing or fixing. But man the engine is so sweet now and way better than I can ever remember

@@HernanSpeed At the end of the day it was not really the mechanics fault. When you start to work on these cars it also starts to uncover other stuff. The bottom line is that perishables do perish and these are now quite old cars. Will be real happy when the coolant hoses are done tomorrow and I can drive it again. Sadly in my country everything has gone Woke, but I am a patriot, and a good blast with the pipes going full V8, is always going to be hard to beat.

Car & Driver compared the 850 VS 928GTS, you can still find the magazine scans online. But that’s when they were new.. I see the Porsche 928 as a much easier car to work on and maintain, the 850i even requires two batteries! So, my vote goes to the 928!💥💥 But I’m not gonna lie… there’s something about the 850’s pillarless profile that draws me in! 🙌🙌

I don’t know which car manufacturer really excels as the best for the masses, but the 928 no matter the year I want it!!! I can pick and choose which year I prefer, but no matter which year I would just love to have one. The 78 or 95? I’ll take either. I love the car regardless of year. They are all beautiful.

love your 928 content...its one of the most underated sportscars ever.. something happend to my 1984 928s4 and now the speedo does not work and the trans is not shifting properly..can you point me in the right direction?
Hey! If it’s been sitting, the fluids in the transmission might have drained…all it takes is a little leak. Top it off with fluid before anything else.
The speedo gets it’s signal from the wires that are next to the battery terminals in the back, make sure they haven’t been crushed or unplugged. You can find lots of pictures of the speedometer wire on Rennlist, it’s a great 928 site!

I've owned 3 of them. Two were 93 GTS, my last was an 87 S4, all were 5-speeds.
Did not know about the rear spoiler on the 87 being a flip up, as being single, I hardly opened the rear hatch. Although all were very low mile cars, I actually found the S4 to be smoother.

Can you do a video on 928 aftermarket upgrades? In particular, I would love to get a throatier exhaust note. I had the rmb done, but it’s still too quiet. Also, would love to get more pep - can you suggest an easy to do tune?
The RMB is the most popular exhaust upgrade because it keeps it quiet.. with a little extra sound. It’s still not loud compared to most cars today. The S4 has 2 more secondary mufflers that can be bypassed, that would be your next step. It would be louder, but nothing crazy. - I had a 928GT with all the mufflers bypassed, including the Catalyst….it was like a Nascar. Way too loud for most, but also glorious! 🙌🙌 Go one step at a time..
On the tune, no need… The “Throttle/Bowden cable adjustments” will COMPLETELY change the way it drives. It will go from feeling a bit lazy, to having an eagerness to accelerate… Most 928’s are not even doing full throttle because these adjustments are off. Search Rennlist 928 forums, lots of “How To’s”
Also make sure that it’s running perfectly (wires/plugs/coils). If these are older and tired, the 928 will start feeling sluggish.

Early cars sound better, easier to work on, weigh less (feel like an actual sports car) and you can make them just as fast as the GTS with very little effort

Yes, definitely easier to work on….I love the simplicity! Early cars all sound very different, (automatics/manuals/Euro’s). The 16v US models sound like muscle cars with exhaust, but the twin dizzy model REVS LIKE AN ANIMAL! 💯🙌🥇

The driver side speakers ( front) is not working since I changed the radio. That speaker is still new. Is that the reason why it’s not working now?
Hi!👋🏻 If the speaker stopped working after the radio change, for sure. Radios that don’t have external amps are sending the signals to the speakers directly from the head unit. So it’s a bad connection: 1) the installer forgot to hook up that speaker. 2) connection is loose. Either way, it’s simple enough to track down 🙌🙌

I agree regarding the later (GTS), the better mentality but my only qualm about the GTS is the red tail light bar extending all the way across its tail. I don’t believe the GT had this characteristic, doesn’t this actually make the GT’s more desirable since they are also scarcer? I think they also came in manuals more & had 5.4’s, no?
The GTS was the only model that had the reflector bar across the tail lights. As far as desirability, it’s very personal. I know that the manuals are commanding a 50%-80% premium over the automatics(wasn’t like this 10 years ago). At the end of the day, the condition of the 928 is what makes it truly desirable. I’ve seen many GTS’s & GT’s sell for very little, because they were completely neglected.. So a low mile example of a 928 is always the best investment.

Rich, only the GTS got the wider flares. But I’ve actually seen a few GT’s with flares, they were available as an exclusive option in 1991 (very rare). The 5.4 also only came in the GTS, the GT got the 5.0 with more aggressive cams than the standard S4.

Also the tire cover is fiberglass and can make a lot of squeaking noise. Only the first half of 1987 had the flip up wing as well as oil squirters. Real Porsche motor mounts are around $900.00 Volvo MM are $70. Spend the money and get the real ones if you want luxury. Son, your wrong on the Timing belt. $1500 saves your engine. Can't afford that, buy a Pruis.Right about interior. Just look at the drivers side seat bolster , tells you everything. I have a Howard Wright 1987 s4. Get in start it up and drive. I only stop this car for gas.
Spare tire cover is plastic, not fiberglass -it should not make noises if it still has the foam underneath. The Volvo motor mounts are just as smooth as the original ones, but the transmission mounts is what makes an ultra smooth drivetrain.
Timing belt is cheap, but it’s just the beginning. The intake must have been done ✅

@@HernanSpeed A very good move when doing the belt and pump is a front of engine wiring harness. About 1k. The hatch @37 years it is discolored some but it is where it latches that makes the noise. Also NLA is the pads between the rear wiper blades. They vibrate together and will make some noise. You do the brand justice !

I agree with a lot, BUT The auctions and sales have proved that original paint vs new paint debate is moot... There is no resale difference unless the paint (new or old) is crap
A cars market value can fluctuate, solely based on the quality of pictures taken.. This I’ve noticed is actually a huge deal, as most are buying based on ‘presentation’.
Most buyers that are getting into these cars are also newbies, not experienced collectors. A repainted/repaired/restored car will always be less valuable than an original one 💯💯💯

@@HernanSpeed typically, yes an original paint will go for more. But that's not what we're seeing in the market right now. There's been several repainted GTS's that are going for the same value as original painted cars. My Euro manual is a repaint and I have no qualms that it'll get top dollar even with a repaint. At this day and age it's almost expected
The rarity of the GTS definitely helps 🙌, buyers don’t have many examples to cross shop with! The 928GTS is a special case, with the right presentation… prices will keep setting records!
At $5K for a new dash from Porsche, I'll send mine to Classic 9 in Dearborn Heights, MI.
Different colors have different prices, I’ve found them as low as $1.400 for a new Grey one (SEM paint to refinish it black). If the car is a GTS, it’s definitely worth searching out an original.
If the 928 is kept in the garage, Classic 9 dashboard should hold up…but it will never match the rest of the car. I know that in Miami, it would be toast in less than 3 Summers.

Congrats man! 👊👊 2 Options: 1) Do a ‘want to buy’ post on the Facebook 928 group(s), you’ll get several responses there. 2) Call a few Porsche dealers (parts department) around the US. You only need the actual dashboard. Sometimes they’ll have them in grey or burgundy, they’re easy to paint black….and they’re NEW. Totally worth it! 💯💯🚀
