It seems that people are having trouble with defining what an Invasive animal is. An Invasive animal is an animal that has been introduced into an area where it is not native and making negative effects on the ecosystem. This is the definition that you use when referring to an animal. The Kina are not Invasive, because they have been recorded to have lived in New Zealand (where this is filmed) for atleast 700 years, probably longer but that's the furthest any records that I can find go. It would be appropriate to call them Invasive if they were a plant, but Kina, as sea urchins are animals. The reason that they are having a negative impact is because of overfishing of their predators. It's similar to how when the US tried to kill off wolves for eating livestock and populations of deer exploded and started to eat farm crops dry. Not only are these people making money off the Kina but they're also saving the Kelp that the Kina eat.
Japan right now has that problem with deer. Nobody hunts anymore and all the natural predators are gone. They are devouring entire forest floors and destroying biodiversity at best, creating mini deserts at worst
@@skeetsmcgrew3282 Japan also banned the sale of all sea cucumber species around mid last year because various Yakuza/mafias were poaching them en masse. Not sure if they've lifted *that* ban yet, but selling sea cucumbers is still illegal in Aomori Prefecture due to a Chinese import/export ban

As he's diving down, that crackling noise that increase in pitch as he goes deeper. That exact sound reminds me of Apo Island (Philippines) where we dove about 80-feet deep to visit the amazing reef.
In the Andaman seas awhile back, on a diving expedition, we went round simply mashing them with whatever we had to hand. The fish came zooming in to feast, then bigger fish came around to see what was going on, and we could count hundreds of fish by the end of the day. Fascinating.
Good work. When I first started diving there was a lot of weed in my favourite area. The weed thinned out and completely disappeared in some places.... but we noticed hundreds of kina that weren't so apparent earlier.
Right? If this is a viable career path, I would have to seriously consider leaving my current life behind and moving to New Zealand to become a full-time urchin scruncher.
When I was in university my marine biology class took a trip to go do this to purple sea urchins for a week in Southern California. They are also invasive to the kelp forests.
So.. this is a conservation effort then? At first I thought they were to sell I know people eat urchin. But pest control? He's helping the reef I guess?
Kina sea urchins in particular are considered bitter (according to wikipedia) so they're not sought out in Asian markets. I assume they taste different from other species of urchin, but I don't know anything about that.
because your density times volume is more than your mass. You either need to apply more downward force by swimming or use additional weight. Its 6th grade physics
Pretty much everyone does unless you have very, very low body fat, like bodybuilder level. Most divers use weighted belts to counteract this. You can also breathe out and you'll sink, but that's obviously not the best thing.
This is so amazing! Are there sharks in these waters 😮😮 would love to try Kina do you look for something in particular about a Kina are some not good ones to grab?
As far as I’m aware the main reason they are doing this is because the Kina is extremely overpopulated because of overfishing of their natural predators. I would think that the diver’s main goal is to simply get rid of the Kina and being able to sell them is a nice bonus.
I was walking low tide, south of Depoe bay, Oregon coast yesterday. Ultra low -1.72 foot. Crushed at least 300 of those things, stomped on them mostly. I could see tens of thousands of them in the tide pools, purple sea urchins. It would take dozens of dedicated volunteers to really have an impact out there.
Not only are these people making money off the Kina but they're also saving the Kelp that the Kina eat.
so an "inconvenient species"
@@simunatorNo, overpopulated.
Id say this varies not all urchins are overpopulated and in fact some are event being driven to extinction because of other urchins altho in ginna have to do more research on the over populated ones to make a final decisio on if i think they are invasive but anyways good look travler :)@@AMnotQ

As he's diving down, that crackling noise that increase in pitch as he goes deeper.
That exact sound reminds me of Apo Island (Philippines) where we dove about 80-feet deep to visit the amazing reef.

Such a good video!!
Just popped by to drop a like, well done guys
for those wondering why this person is doing this: these urchins eat kelp to the point of deforestation of entire kelp forests
Awesome video. thank you! More please, if I may request
"oh its harvest season again, time to get the kina"
Fuck engineering, this is what I want my career to be.
Right? If this is a viable career path, I would have to seriously consider leaving my current life behind and moving to New Zealand to become a full-time urchin scruncher.
you have gained a new sub
When I was in university my marine biology class took a trip to go do this to purple sea urchins for a week in Southern California. They are also invasive to the kelp forests.
It's so cool seeing how they seem to change color as they get closer to the surface. I've never gotten to see that in real time before
Why is this straight up asmr

"Ow, why did you push me away?"
I love this so much
So.. this is a conservation effort then? At first I thought they were to sell I know people eat urchin. But pest control? He's helping the reef I guess?
Yep
The urchins are very overpopulated. The urchins eat the plants, and with so many, there eating away the reefs.
Plus, these are invasive and can kill an entire reef really quickly if not mitigated
@@starcraftgem are these different from the sea urchins people eat?
@21234u There are many types of sea urchins, the ones shown in the video are called Kina, and they're edible
I can watched this all day~
Nice gameplay man
This is the type of content I want on my home page
You would think prices would come down on sea urchin by now.
It’s not industrially profitable
Kina sea urchins in particular are considered bitter (according to wikipedia) so they're not sought out in Asian markets.
I assume they taste different from other species of urchin, but I don't know anything about that.
Why is it that when i dive, i float back to top?
Solutions to your problem
1 have less air in lung => less dive time
2 have a weighted belt
because your density times volume is more than your mass.
When you factor in your air and fat, you are less dense than water. So divers need weighted belts.
Sooooo no cinderblock?

This is so great to watch
Как же это залипательно, какая красота 😍
This is so amazing! Are there sharks in these waters 😮😮 would love to try Kina do you look for something in particular about a Kina are some not good ones to grab?
Depends on the individual, I’m not a fan of kina but a lot of people in NZ love it especially if they’re fat and creamy.
Some of the kina are dead, so there's no reason to take them, as they're not killing the environment
As far as I’m aware the main reason they are doing this is because the Kina is extremely overpopulated because of overfishing of their natural predators. I would think that the diver’s main goal is to simply get rid of the Kina and being able to sell them is a nice bonus.
the way you fling them off the rocks and they tumble perfectly into the net

I was walking low tide, south of Depoe bay, Oregon coast yesterday.
Ultra low -1.72 foot. Crushed at least 300 of those things, stomped on them mostly.
I could see tens of thousands of them in the tide pools, purple sea urchins.
It would take dozens of dedicated volunteers to really have an impact out there.
But some sea birds and crabs got fed that day, and I had fun!
Dexterity of these hands, gosh..
i like holding my breath to see if i can do it as long as the divers. I wonder how much this job pays
