Monday is here and another lock-down motivation comes along. This time the episode is set in picturesque Valle de los Cóndores in Chile that I visited in late 2018. One of my goals was to try to flash La Sensación del Bloque (9a) first ascended by Alex Megos. Check out the next episode to find out more. My own commentary is included again.

Zirob I use to work at a climbing gym. One time this guy came into the gym, I thought he was there to pick up his kid from camp, looking at him I guessed he was probably near 250-275 lbs and was 43 years old( saw that on his waiver). He walks up to me and asked how much for a day pass to climb. I’m not going to lie to you and say that I didn’t question in my head ”how in the world are you going to climb up a wall”, but getting up the wall doesn’t really matter to climbers. For us, it the opportunity to challenge our body to its maximum potential and see what we are capable of if we put every ounce of effort into a climb. That’s why we sometimes spend weeks, months, or even years trying to finish climbs we started. I get this guy set up and take him on orientation and half way through he asks about auto belays, More specifically if they can support his weight. I assured to this man that they can and told him that we do training for employees that requires us to have 3 people on a single auto belay. This man was clearly nervous and I gave him a few tips on how to get over the nerves, especially of falling with the auto belay. Later on after I get him signed off to be in our facility on his own. From the counter I see him trying a few boulders in the gym, they were all Vb-V0( easiest beginner grades) he could only make it up half the wall before falling off or tiring out and giving up. At the end of his first day he came back up to me and thanked me for my help and told me that he’ll come back. I saw him a few more times In The next few weeks until I quit my job to find something a little more lucrative, dirt bags don’t really find money essential lol. I went back to that gym for the first time about 6 months after I quit and guess who I got to have as a partner for a belay re-qualification, yes it was the same man, and no I don’t understand why I had to re-qualify for belay after working there for about a year o well. Anyway, I didn’t really notice the man at first, he shaved off his beard and looked to be 40-50 lbs lighter. He was truly a changed man, his confidence not just in his climbing, but his personality was outstanding. He right away noticed me and thanked me for helping him find this side to him that he thought he never had. Again, I didn’t notice him at this point, I think he saw my confusion because he cracked a joke about me being able to hold him up if he falls to spark my memory of when he asked that about the auto belay, I straight up shit myself. Apparently he started to climb daily and began to diet along with training at home every other day. He went from falling off the easiest boulders that I’ve seen 2 year old kids complete to now climbing V4 boulders consistently with a PB of a V6. He also can climb 5.10b top ropes with a PB of 5.10d(idk what that is in European scale I think it’s around 6a) now this story was probably over kill, but I love telling it, and it really does show that it’s never to late to start climbing. There are people way older and way more un-athletic that all started climbing from the same place. Just have fun with it and enjoy the process. Climbing is a very rewarding sport since you get to see results right away after completing climbs you weren’t able to before. It might take 20 or it might take 100 tries to complete a boulder. But in the end that just means your bettering yourself.
