Alan Page Highlights - MVP

- The 1970's was dominated by great defenses like the Steel Curtain, the Fearsome Foursome, the Doomsday Defense, and of course, the Purple People Eaters. Each of those defenses had a Hall of Fame defensive tackle to lock down the middle. Minnesota had arguable the greatest of them all in Alan Page, who wrecked offenses for over a decade as part of the purple gang. His legendary 1971 season saw him win the MVP, making him one of only two defensive players to ever win the prestigious award. And it could be argued that his football career is probably the least interesting part of Alan Page's life story.
All music and video are property of the NFL. I'm just a guy who enjoys making highlight videos, so please don't take this down.
All music can be found on Dave Volsky's channel: / channel
Most of the footage seen in this video could be found on Kevin Reidy's channel, contained within "This Week in Pro Football episodes. " - Sport
Alan Page may very well have been the greatest Defensive Tackle to play the game.
Aaron Donald
Tyler Head he & Page are the 2 best imo
I would have to put Bob Lilly in the middle of that discussion, along with Joe Greene from the same time-frame.
I think so
@@WayneKeen Page played DT at 245-250 lbs. Quickest off the ball of any of them.
With Aaron Donald tearing up the modern day NFL as an undersized but freakishly talented defensive tackle, I decided to shine a spotlight on the man who paved the way for players like Donald and John Randle. Alan Page's game-breaking ability combined with fellow hall of famer Carl Eller and iron-man Jim Marshall to form the front line of the legendary Purple People Eater defense. His ability to rip through offensive lines took attention away from the other great pass-rushers on the team, and he had the underrated ability to anchor against the run. This defense paved the way to four Super Bowl appearances in the 1970’s. Page’s own brilliance garnered him the Most Valuable Player Award in 1971, as the he and the Vikings superb defense dragged a thoroughly uninspiring offense to the playoffs. He finished his career in Chicago as a still excellent pass-rusher for the Bears, before hanging up his cleats for good in 1981 and practicing law full-time.
I hope that you guys and gals enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it. I did some color grading, and I tried to retime all of the clips, to make every play look like it did in real time, rather than the crappy slow-motion that NFL films loved. As a Vikings fan, it was fun to go back and watch highlights of the team during their heyday. I want to take a minute to rant about “This Week in Pro Football” episodes though. Most of the episodes pre-1970 are missing, which is understandable. So there’s probably some early-career Page highlights that would’ve been included if I had them. But it seemed like after 1975, the episodes started to highlight the offenses more and more, which meant that finding defensive highlights was rare. For instance, in 1976, Page had 18 sacks and goodness knows how many tackles for loss! But TWIPF only showed a total of THREE Page highlights in the 14 episodes from that year. So it was annoying to know that Page made all of these fantastic plays that were not shown, since NFL films decided that it was more worthwhile to show a ho-hum Fran Tarkenton pass instead.
Anyways, that’s enough ranting for one day. As always, please let me know what player you would like to see next. It can be a NFL or collegiate player, or it could be a NBA player.

I love vintage NFL FOOTAGE
@@SCsc864 I'm glad that you enjoyed it! CZcams has a ton of NFL videos that show plays from the last 5 years, but there's not much in the way of 1970's NFL. Most players from this era don't have good highlight videos, despite there being more than enough footage of them. I mean, I didn't realize that I would be able to create a 10 minute video for Page before I started this project.
@@PockyCandy yea man there should be better footage of the greats fron that era!! I love ur channel by the way ive showed footage of the greats u have posted in here to show them players back then were great also
Also, you can't tell me that the song at 2:46 doesn't sound like it's ripped straight out of the soundtrack for "Medal of Honor: Frontline."
Thank you for such an amazing video of the great Alan Page!!Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏽
I wouldn't be Vikings fan without Alan Page and the purple people eaters 💜👍🏼
Part of what made Alan so great was the fact that he was so smart. Watching some of these tapes, you can see that he never ever bites on the fake. Not once. Everyone else is running after the running back who doesn't have the ball except Alan, he never breaks his stride on his way to the QB for the sack.
He did in fact sign my post card
Peace, love and freedom
Alan Page
He would be first DT TRILLION $ contract
I bet Page could un fuck the political geospheee
This is awesome to watch as a younger Vikings fan who never got the chance to see him play. SKOL VIKES!
Same
These were the good ole days of football.
Alan Page #88 of the Minnesota Vikings

9x All Pro selection

1971 Defensive Player of the Year
1973 Defensive Player of the Year

Pro Football Hall of Fame selection
Great video and Page is my all time favorite player on the Vikings. I knew he did a lot in his career but I had no idea he blocked 28 kicks- unbelievable stat!
One of the greatest ever. First defensive player ever named MVP. And he truly was the most valuable player. Big & strong with fast feet.
He's the guy that put the 85, Chicago Bears in the situation to become great on defense. There no reason to beat yourself up weightlifting, the best athletes in league history certainly didn't, he's the example I go by.
An amazing man I met him when I was in middle school he came and spoke in one off my classes he really didn't talk about football all he talked about was him being on the Minnesota supreme Court, a real nice guy, and his pinky finger was broken 9 times, it looked bad I'll never forget that lol
Without greats like Alan Page, Deacon Jones, and Mean Joe Greene - there would be no Reggie White, Bruce Smith etc... these men didn't break the mold - they WERE the molds.
I see why he won MVP based on Forced Fumbles alone. Good God.
Alan was so fast across the line, very strong for his size, speed 💯
Great video, very well put together. The music fits it perfectly.
Alan Page was 1 helluva player on 1 of the better teams of all time.
Playing outside in Minnesota had to be brutal.
The stat that really jumps out at me is 28 blocked kicks. That’s insane!
He'd Be A DE/OLB Edge Rusher In Today's Game
Nothing like highlight music of the 70s
The great Alan....part of the purple human eaters. What a DL!
The offensive lineman takes out his own running back @4:09
That was one of the best highlight videos I have ever seen. The picture quality and vibrant colors were amazing. Alan Page is one of my favorite players.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video! It's good to know my time spent editing this was not wasted.
@@PockyCandy It was worth it! I shared this video with many others.
Any chance of a video of Robert Brazile #52 of the Houston Oilers?
I'll look into making a Robert Brazile video.
I agree with brian. The quality is fantastic.
How great was he, my favorite all time Minnesota Viking, did great things on the field and off. So disappointed when they let him go !! The endless pursuit to get runner or Q/B 💜 Thanks for the video, enjoyed it very much !
Best video that I've ever seen! Makes me tear up. SKOL!
This is when I first became a Vikings fan. And why I became a Vikings fan. Alan was the best player on that defense. But when you watch this film, notice that there are a lot of other great defenders also. For instance, Carl Eller was also amazing. Their defense was really something special to watch in those years.
0:26 can we not ignore the fact that number 76 on the Vikings just suffered a major neck injury?
@cad I saw the same thing. Holy crap who was that? He went straight limp.
That was DT Paul Dickson who was the 5th Viking DL kind of like the 5th Beatle, he was fine, just got his bell rung, that was 1969 in the NFL championship game against the Browns.
@@thomasmccartney1996 "bell rung" is code for major head trauma
@@CadChamberlain But not a major neck injury which was implied by the other post, he continued to play for 2 more seasons past this injury and played the rest of the 1969 season as well.
This is awesome! Beautifully done!
The greatest Viking!
Great film, a menace on the LOS, terror in the backfield. leader of the "Purple People Eaters" LEGENDARY player.
He changed how the position was played. So glad i grew up with the purple people eaters!
Thanks bro.... love your work
Amazing to see just how unblockable that defense was. Excellent video!
Great work as always! It’s always a delight to see one of your videos in my sub box.
Page Eller and Marshall were a three man playoff team
I wish the NFL will review the old games and credit all the sacks and forced fumbles these lineman got. They deserve the recognition. They were grossly underpaid back then. At least give them the stats to match the toughness they played.
Football player by day, aspiring lawyer by night. While still playing, he earned his JD. He didn’t start practicing because his career as an NFL player didn’t end until after the 1981 season.
I love you PockyCandy! Yoda Man! Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. You are appreciated!
Happy New Year to you too! I'm glad that you liked the video. Is there any player you would like to see in a future video?
@@PockyCandy Walter Payton my childhood hero!
@@PockyCandy I also asked you to do Curtis Samuel of Ohio State before, because one of my childhood friends coach him at Erasmus Hall High School here in Brooklyn New York.
He wasn’t one on the best lineman of all time. He was one of the greatest that ever played the game.
All time great tuba player and human bean
There has never been another defensive tackle like him.Don t even bring up this other individual from Texas who does not compare to him
real life waterboy
Bud traded him or released him (I forget) because Page got into jogging (which was the fad of the 70’s) and got his playing weight down to around 225 and Bud figured he couldn’t play NFL defensive tackle so light! Page got the message and got his weight back up and had 2 really good years with the Bears…including some good games against the Vikes because he was ticked off.
His range and athleticism reminds me of JJ Watt.
Skooool
I have met him before
Me watching this after winning league mvp with my LOLB on madden 😂😂😂😂
Pocketcandy nice comparison but alan page played on a defensive line that also included guys like carl eller, jim mashall and larsens. Carl eller was a hall of famer and in 2004 jim marshall made the hall of very good player which is the second tier of hall of fame. Arron donald is a one man wrecking crew.
This is true yet they got run over by Miami, Pitt and Oakland. Against K. C. Curley Culp had a bigger impact then Page. They just couldn't show up for the biggest game ....aww shucks
@@ronniepest3932 true. They only showed up against my rams unfortunately. And since we never had a decent quarterback in those days we just couldnt get by those guys. Still as a rams fan cool memories though. As a kid i lived and died with my rams. Mostly died lol
@@kevinharrissr5255 totally, as a Steelers fan I was rooting for the Vikings against the 🐬 and Raiders, and both were blowouts. I remembered being disappointed. And yeah as a kid growing up I was scared for my Steelers when they played them in the Superbowl. Rams made it with Ferragamo by the end though, finally. I was sooooooo happy they beat Dallas togettothe Superbowl. And that Superbowl was closer then the final score indicated. The best days of the NFL, no b. s. calls by refs looking into monitors, just good old fashioned REAL 🏈
Donald and the new era doesn’t come remotely close...the video speaks for itself
28 blocked kicks!!!
He played with no pads on his hands and elbows.
Good work! Question; do what'd the supposed justification for Big Jim Marshall not being in the H O F? Anybody? Need some help on this please as I deem Jared Allen as a bit more than ok but c'mon man! Was it the 'Wrong Way Run' that doomed him into obscurity after 18+ seasons of Headslap after Headslap of fun n games?
Lived and suffered as a Vikings fan since '68 right here......
Cowboys will always have a player wear 88, but the Vikings will only ever have one 88
way to start video. Sacking Staubach in the EZ!!!!!
I hate the Vikings but this is awesome
Why do “hate the Vikings” ? Please explain your statement...
@@aldixon1977 I don't need to explain myself to you
I wonder how many sacks they actually had back then.
SKOL VIKINGS
All the way to the Super Bowl!
Create warren moon highlights
He was super thin to play generational tackle.
I liken him more to a middle linebacker.... like brian urlacher.... both at 6-4.
U tube I can't get that for free I don't have cable TV and never will.with these telecomucation companies.
What is it with everybody ruining the videos with shitty music
*Skol
Great quality video!!
But, only a wuss gets tackled by a quarterback.
Roman Gabriel was 6'4" and 225 lbs. He was certainly no slouch when it came to getting physical- whether he was scrambling for yards or trying to tackle a defender after a turnover.
Absolutely Correct .....Roman Gabriel was a very physically strong QB and not that easy to bring down....I think many times he actually enjoyed physically resisting a sack@@petecapravos617
