  • Indigenous groups want the Brazilian government to recognize more of their territories and protect them from criminal activities. Thousands of Indigenous people marched through Brazil's capital, Brasilia, on Thursday, protesting against the government's failure to recognize more of their ancestral lands officially. Along with calling for more land recognition, some tribes also protested a proposed 950-kilometer (590-mile) rail project. The Ferrograo railway will transport grain from farms in the central part of the country to ports along the Tapajos River, a large Amazon tributary. A group of 40 Indigenous leaders met President Lula at the presidential palace.

What is an indigenous group? The people who were in a country when the Europeans came or the prior people who they killed or drove out to take the land?

President Lula carries out many public policy in favor of the Indigenous people. The time frame project was created by the Brazilian rural right that wants more space for plantations and these spaces are indigenous lands.

They having to prove they occupied the land in or before 1988 I assume is going to be complicated and assume that is policy, believe me this is not surprising to me nor to most Latin Americans, we know our governments have until recently traditionally mostly worked like this, and due to this I tend to believe there's foul play.
Us the common, regular Latin American people have not been really been a high priority to our governments, and they have traditionally cared even less about indigenous peoples. I'm quite aware we need to use nature’s resources to prosper and progress but still, due to history I tend to believe governments don't work fairly in cases like this.
If you ask me, I’d say I think they most like have been on that land long before our nations states came to be, long before the term Latin America was created.

It is Not a question of separation but a question of freedom and security. By having what they consider as their own land, they get a sense of security, a refuge and know that the wealthy cannot touch their land and destroy it for it's natural resources. They are not against non natives like shown by the presence of the camera crew, they just want to keep their safe space where they cannot be physically persecuted
