In this video I build a neat timber framed mailbox post for my house. This was a super fun project, packed with all the good stuff of woodworking, Sliding dovetails, through mortise and tenons, wedges, tusks, dowels, etc.

Ha! How did you know what my next video was going to be.
And oh so soothing to listen to
Have you got a link to that video?
Literally. I don't even care what he is making. I just click on whatever I haven't seen yet. Never disappointed.
Legend has it that the nicer the mail box, the more junk mail one receives. :P
Ah, that's my problem.
There are entire CZcams videos dedicated to showing crappy methods of making dowels and you just threw this gem as an offhand remark. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! I try and stick neat tips in my videos in an attempt to keep them compelling.
Great band name, Nine Thousand Cuts. Well done, Mikey.
Totally. Thank you.
You are a teacher and comedian😂. Love your work and shop.
Thank you.
15:11. That trick alone was worth the price of admission, lol. Gonna use it to make some 1/2" key holders from 3/4" dowel stock.
Thank you. That is a neat trick for sure.
That might be the most understated line in all Woodworking YT, “Good lumber makes all the difference, it’s such a pleasure to work with nice materials.” Truer words have never been spoken!
Thank you. Good materials make the difference.
How appropriate, a "Make it a Blockbuster Night" shirt followed by an "inconceivable" one LOL
Ha! I have been upping my shirt game lately.
That sign looks like it could be easily cut down to a 23🤔😄
Talk about a motivational video, I can’t help but want to make that now!
Ha! Good guess, but still a little off.
That's the same combination as my luggage!
Ha! Great movie.
The dow making tip was incredible! Tank you! Also linseed paint is a good permanent outdoor finish
Thank you for the tip. I'll look into linseed paint.
It’s really refreshing to see someone marketing a product at or below the actual rating. I’d say that pole saw can easily measure 2.25hp.
Great build as always mike. Your videos are therapy.
I noticed that you didn’t bring over your newspaper tube to the new structure. Thanks for sharing this insightful video. Hopefully some neighborhood fool will not attempt to move this box with his moving vehicle. Our driveway fronts on a state highway. We lost two mailbox posts to vehicles; on the second encounter the driver left an oil pan in exchange for the steel rebar that was pounded 18” deep in ground and about 18” inside the cedar post. I will have to look for a rock if we have to replace another mailbox.
Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Cheers
Thank you. Sorry to hear about your mailboxes. Fortunately, we are on a quite dead end road.
Mike your dry sense of humour just kills me. I wish you had more uploads!
Thank you. I'll have another one out soon.
its nice to see your apprentice growing up 👍👍👍
Thank you. He is getting big.
wont be long before the shop apprentice, becomes the Mighty Shop Apprentice!
Thank you. Very true.
That’s the most gangster mailbox I’ve ever seen.
Thank you.
The artist strikes again.
Thank you.
The project and video were both great! Coming from someone who will never spend the time to film any of my projects, please keep filming and posting yours lol
Thank you. Will do.
Like a rock, standin' arrow straight
Like a rock, chargin' from the gate
Like a rock, carryin' the weight

Mike, what song? Easy....easy
I worked in a bowling alley for 5 years back in the 90s, I know every word to every Bob Seger song.
You should get yourself a Super Surfacer. I've never seen one in real life and I think they're only common in Japan, but every time I see one I want one. I've been watching Japanese woodworkers on CZcams and there are so many specialty Japanese tools that simply don't exist here for whatever reason. (I've been watching "Shoyan Japanese Carpenter" and "Ishitani Furniture".)
Funny you mention it, I have wanted one for a while. I just found out about one for sale near me on eBay, but I missed the end of the auction by an hour or so.
After the rock solid dad joke you should have said "this thing is not going anywhere". Only true dad combination.
Agreed. That was a missed opportunity on my part.
Love the clip for your sanding blade/disk. 👍.💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you Suzi.
Pro tip: when trying to find the center just angle the tape measure on the workpiece to the next nearest whole number. for your example that would be 5". then mark at 2.5" and its the center.
That is a good tip. Thank you.
@@MikeFarrington yea once you do it once you're gona feel really silly for not doing it from the second you picked up a tape looking for center. Its ok. we all felt the same thing.
@@jeepxj We'll see. Peoples brains work in different ways. I'll give it a try but, the measuring from both sides could help me prevent a math error. Hope that makes sense.
@@MikeFarrington in theory it always finds the center. you dont need to know your overall dimension.
@@MikeFarrington You can do both. Angle one way to get an easily divisible number, mark, then angle the other way.
LMAO funny at the beginning. Nice work who would have thought you could put so much into a post.
Thank you. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
Nice work and really nice wood. Thanks for sharing.
Weekend Stuff
Thanks 👍
While I enjoy working with wood and building things, I realize now how I would have never be able to make a living at it. I have not had the patience as I see you demonstrate in your videos. I once built a playhouse for my kids when they were young but I didn't use any plans. It worked and they and the neighbor kids enjoyed playing in it. But it would never have been worthy of a video. Just wanted to say that while I will never have never lived up excellence in my journey, I do very much appreciate your excellence. I have been a fan of your site for a long time! Thanks for your videos!
Thank you.
Hello Mike, When the Chairman of the board says upgrade, we upgrade. Great job learned a lot. From one of the billions of fans. LOL Songs to enjoy from your female fans. The Eagles "Take it Easy" and "Those Shoes" Thank you
Thank you Delilah. Take it Easy has a special place in my heart. It was the first song my dad played for me when I was just a little boy. He played a few others from the Eagles greatest hits, then we moved on to Born in the USA.
No one will ever drive over this *Letter Box* lol :D Great Work
I hope not.
Can’t wait for you to make the corresponding Femail Box!!! Great work as always!
Ha! I'll get on it.
The moment you forget to replace the 1234 with your real street # and confuse the crap out of your mail person
Ha!
Great job! Glad to see you picking up some checks in the last scene.
I wish.
Keeping it positive, like, I’m positive I dig your videos and appreciate what you do.
@@Mikemalone7873 Thank you. I'm with ya, gotta stay positive.
Pro tip: use a drillbit one size smaller and push it to one side of the hole to mark the hole in the tenon to get the offset.
Thank you very much. I love your content!
Great tip!
Boy that apprentice grew up fast!!
He sure is.
I love that you scribed the post to the boulder so it looks like it's perfectly embedded in the rock. When I saw this on IG I really though you used a diamond blade to cut the rock perfectly around the post.
Thank you. Carving the stone could have worked. I didn't even think of that, the woodworker in me figured carving the wood is easier.
Love it. Now make a mailbox.
Thank you. I thought about it, then decided that was the portion of the project that I would be lazy on.
It’s absolutely glorious! I love the massive rock with the post scribed to it and of course the painstaking joinery… as it should be built!
Thank you very much.
This is a most excellent and very cool project ! (The stone ~ non excavation ~ footing!). And nice to hear that your S.O. has a "Honey Do" list! Always a treat to have a tour around the Board Room too ! Thanks for All that you share !
Thank you very much!
Superb, as ever, Mike. Cheers from Western New York!
Thanks Mark.
Nice work! The next one will be 'Mailbox of Majesty' :)
Ha! I like that one.
Yes - I use the 9000 cut process often. Just seems to be so much more work to setup a router or dado stack.
Glad to know that professionals do the same.
Plus the dado leaves scoring marks.
First one of your videos I have seen. AWESOME!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm sure your letter carrier thanks you! As a rural letter carrier I subconsciously rate all my customers based on the quality of the mailbox and Christmas goodies.
Ha! Every home is different, but for ours it really is the first thing you see when coming in. I wanted it to put my best foot forward for that very reason.
Wow better than norms now that’s impressive 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🇮🇪🇮🇪
Thank you.
Geez. You my friend have a lot of very nice, expensive machinery. Puts my small shop to shame. Nice job.
Thank you. I am a professional cabinet maker, hence the shop and tools.
Pro tip: Thnak you = Thank you 😁
Well done on the mailbox, it looks amazing and I now want one.
Glad you like it!
If that’s the miter saw that I think it is…Nice! 💯
Yes, that is a very high end saw.
Skills and tools make spectacular results, it has nothing to do with the woodworker !! 🙄
Super job Mike as usual
You got that right!
From this video alone I think your mortiser has earned the title “the Mighty Mortiser”. Thanks for another great video.
That is such a nice tool.
I would like to have spent some time in your boardroom during this project as cedar is one of the best smelling wood species.
Agreed. Very nice smelling wood.
That turned out really nice. 👍🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
That 2HP pull saw is a bit narcissistic ;) Great vid, thanks! The dowel trick was genius.
ITs the truth. Plus thats an induction motor, so we know the number accurate.
Well, since I don't have excavation equipment other than a pick and shovel moving a huge rock is straight out for my old back.. Looks great for a guy with all kinds of great equipment to work with..😊
Well I had to call in my neighbor to help me move the rock. Point is, lean on friends when you have a gap in your tool set.
@@MikeFarrington Age usually comes with old friends as well ..lol It's an ongoing movement..
Very, very nice Mike. I think the shop apprentice approved and then went and found something else to do. Can't believe just how big he's gotten. You might need to add length to the old wagon, but don't pull him around when his friends are looking..lol Thanks for the video.
He is getting pretty heavy to pull in the wagon these days.
Looks BEAUTIFUL.....really turned out awesome!!! I'm amazed at how much your "shop apprentice" has grown. He's becoming a great little helper and will learn so many skills from you while assisting in the shop!
Thank you very much.
The tractor demo wins the internet today!
Ha! Thank you.
Lovely,now for all the bills
Ha! Tell me about it.
A great project, Mike. Love that a true carpentry master often has a Band-Aid on a finger. Your' videos are not only educational, but very relaxing too.
Thank you Phil. If I told you how I cut my finger you'd laugh.
Very nice Mike! Some excellent techniques and tips in this video that are helpful even though I will probably never make this project.
Glad it was helpful!
Looks great.
Thanks!
Excellent job - beautifully executed!!
Thank you very much!
@@MikeFarrington My Son lives in the US and his mail box is always being trashed so I am sending him your video as I'm sure that would survive anything. Great job!!
Recently discovered your channel, new sub!! I've been woodworking for 40 years and I learn something with every one of your vids so far. Also appreciate the humor! Oh, and your shop doesn't suck either!
Thank you very much. Welcome aboard.
Over designed, over built, over budget, over finished.. I love it!
Thanks Mike.
Great project. Last year, I built a new mailbox based on a design similar to yours -- less the boulder. It was a very satisfying project with nice results. Yours has been the same, it is clear.
Nicely done!!!
Very cool!
Look great Mike...rock on!
Ha! Will do.
Fabulous work as usual.
Thank you! Cheers!
Spectacular job!
Thank you.
If you're asking H.M. Murdock from The A-Team, I believe it would be a 2 horsey power pull saw! Amazing build as always Mike!!
Ha! Love it. Thank you.
I love it! Proof, yet again, that no project is too small for a woodworker to obsess over and totally overbuild it. Awesome!
I couldn't agree more Overbuilding is half the fun.
Something like this box could be sold for $2,000 or more, so it would be a profitable "small" project if one wanted to sell them.
Anyone want to road trip with me to 1234, Colorado? We can watch Mike do wood stuffs, in-person...
Weee. Lets go.
Looks Great Mike!
Thanks 👍
the shop apprentice has grown up so fast!
Yes he has.
Thank you! Recently purchased the materials for my mailbox (was also inspired by the 3rd Coast video), now I have all the motivation i need to make a complete mess and lasting finished product!
Nice, go for it.
High quality detailed build, nice work! Lol if someone hits that mailbox they will certainly fill it! I’ve been thinking about building one with a large oversized mail box to keep delivery drivers off of my drive way. 👍
Fill it with what?
@@idontthinkso666 Hi Pat, I’ve had my mailbox hit several times before. Slamming into this one you would certainly fill it as it as a large rock they would also hit.
That's a good idea!
@@idontthinkso666 blood....probably.
10:00 for accuracy when choosing a drafting triangle, get the larger one. Just like a level, bigger is better! 💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you Suzi.
@@MikeFarrington, I haven't been getting notifications of your videos, so I'll be doing a Mike Farrington marathon this weekend! 💖🌞🌵😷
@@suzisaintjames I am totally bummed to hear this, unfortunately, I have heard this from others as well. There is nothing I can do, I just take the beating the algorithm dishes out. Thank you very much for you views and comments over the years. It really means a lot.
One factor of notifications could be because of the frequency of your videos. I understand that it takes time to do these projects, and that time doubles or quadruples when you are filming... But have you considered doing CZcams's new "shorts" videos? You could do a series of basic woodworking 101 tips for newbies like me! For example, I learned that for my current project that I need full extension, bottom mount drawer slides, for a pull out shelf. And that cabinet handles come with all sorts of different hole widths... so don't drill the holes until you get your handles home. ... Or you could film somethings that you might be showing your shop apprentice to how to do.💖🌞🌵😷
@@suzisaintjames I agree that my posting frequency is quite low. I like the idea of 101 style videos, let me put some thought into that. I do have a video all planned out where the Shop Apprentice and I go back in time 35 years to the first project I ever built, which I still use to this day. If you have any questions you think I can help with feel free to email me via my website.
That’s beautiful. Very nice work. Take care
Thank you! Cheers!
@@MikeFarrington While I was watching I was hoping you did not live in an area that receives any snow. Plow trucks can be brutal on mailboxes. It looks like that’s not an issue. Awesome job
@@mtadams2009 It snows like crazy here, but our roads do not get plowed.
@@MikeFarrington Well that’s good. Where I live my mailbox gets destroyed every few years from the plows.
Me: looking forward to the mailman's reaction for some reason.
Also me, looking at the thumbnail: How the heck did he chisel a perfectly sized hole in that rock??
Turns out the all-thread and scribing the post makes waaaay more sense.
Ha! He stopped by as I was installing it, and he certainly did a double take.
@@MikeFarrington As he should have! This may be the only mailbox in existence whose construction involved a block plane.
@@patrickdevlin3164 Ha! You may be right.
Thnak you for being such an inspiration. See what I did there 😀
Ha!
Thnaks for the video! 😉
You bet!
To find center you can use your combo square with the 45 degree leg against one side of the post. Mark a line, then flip it to the other side of the post and mark a line,,,and presto,,,instant center intersection.
Good tip, thank you.
as long as a perfect perpendicular line is marked first so the 45 lines are at exact same height from both sides ( a mark at desiered location then an angled ruler at , for example, 8 inches from side to side, the 'exact center ' will be the 4 inches mark on the ruler)
I was able to use that same model of hollow mortiser in school. It’s a very underrated tool. Great job as always!
Its a truly great tool.
Great video as always Mike. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Another enjoyable video watching the master create an everyday piece of equipment at the next level, awesome outcome, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
a little bit of Japanese-esque! Nice!
Indeed.
Amazing project, humor, and shirt selection. I lost it at “it saws most things”.
Ha! Thank you. I always thought Sawzall was a little much.
Nice project
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing all your tips and tricks with us.
My pleasure!
Fantastic project, Mike. It's great to see the apprentice and how big he is getting. Rather than 2 horsepower, that was a one Mikepower saw.
Bill
2hp=1mp Haha!
Love yr work mate, keep the projects coming...
Thanks, will do!
"Maybe it would look as though, a little more thought was put into the project." Haha yeah, up until that dovetailed slot for the address, it looked like you really cobbled that thing together. Awesome work, Mike!
Thank you. I think it would have looked a little clunky, if I had just screwed the sign on.
@@MikeFarrington dovetailing the sign slot was a classy move.
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful job, Mike, as always. I love watching you work.
Thank you very much!
Lovely piece of craftsmanship. You made something simple as a postbox a pleasure to watch.
Thank you Phil.
Nice job. Here in NZ our specs say letterbox needs to be big enough to hold A4 size mags and envelopes. We have a lot of small useless boxes sold in stores here, but as a posty they are such a pain to put mail in. Yes you can fold the item to fit but many are stamped saying do not bend. (Certificates or photos etc). I love the way you included your numbers, looks a more pro finish and overall nicer look. One concern may be that being a solid wood post it might crack or warp and twist overtime.
Good info. Thank you. All lumber in the project was dried to about 10%, which means it will be stable outdoors in this environment. So cracking, or any other defect is very unlikely.
Mike lm in the Uk and sir you could put this in harrods what is the most expensive shop in London Mike you are a real G as my son says 😊👍
Thank you, that is quite the compliment.
Well done. I enjoyed watching this project. Thank you for documenting it on video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful . (thank goodness you don't have street plows)
Ha! Out in the country, I'm the plow driver, so if it gets hit, its on me.
Very nice. I have been wanting to do this very thing for our mail box as well as a house number post.
Go for it!
Maybe it’s me- it seems as the shop apprentices have aged- your projects have become more refined and museumesque !!
Thank you. One of my goals is to continually improve my work. I'm happy to hear you noticed.
@@MikeFarrington I didn’t mean that to be a put down. I was being sarcastic. Your work is top notch. It seems your apprentices are growing as fast as my 2 shop apprentices did. Enjoy them we only get 1 rehearsal.!!
