I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for the cast to keep a straight face and not burst out laughing because I laughed so hard I was literally crying. Greatest show of all time.
When he is supposed to be speaking French, he misspeaks English with an awful French accent, and when he is supposed to be speaking English, he speaks perfect Oxford English in a posh accent. Who ever it was that dreamed this idea up is a sheer genius!
The thing I loved about Crabtree was that at a time when even some mild swearwords would have been frowned upon in TV shows, he was able to get away with (1) swearing but disguising it with his "bad pronunciation", e.g. "dickhead" => "duckhead", and (2) turning regular words into what would be considered as swearwords, e.g. "pass" => "piss". And it was damn genius.
From a linguistic point of view, his lines were a brilliant piece of script writing. And luckily, there was always one of the servant girls there to help interprete his sentences for the audience. This TV show is timeless. 🙂
I also thinks he lived down Cheltenham Road in my native Peckham. Not sure how true it is but apparently wasn't a fan of people passing him in the street and saying "good moaning"
Benny Hill was also fluent in French. Admittedly, it's not relevant for this show, but two British comedic actors whose characters either messed up French or despised French for comedic purposes is great.
I was in my 20's when this show was shown on Australian Broadcasting Corp. My English girlfriend also liked the show. We watched it live stage show in Sydney with this cast except Rene as he had an accident hitting his head. These actors are amazing. Crabtree and Heir Flick are very skinny and tall. Heir Flick was doing cartwheel on stage whilst wearing the leather long coat.
Great old British comedy nuff said I have the complete season s on DVD now they cost me $ 100 AUD money well spent Thanks for the upload from Kim Everrett Tasmania Australia
I was waiting for the scene where he was marrying the couple, I don't think I ever there is anything funnier or I laughed when I saw that scene. That is the best scene for Officer Crabtree!!!!! the whole show is pure genius, they way the thought of speaking English in French accent as French. I was chatting with a British guy once and he said that this was common from long time ago, so it was not something unfamiliar to the British people. but still great and AlloAllo is the funniest comedy show ever!
Best part when he says “ they’ve drawn poctures of the sispocts” and Rene goes *wtf* “sispocts?”. If you skip bk and phone then Crabtree just confirms confidentiality “sispocts!” Becomes a loop of giggles for me (ps sispocts is now a suggestion by my iPhone after “sis” beating sister and other real words)
What I love is how Rene usually understands him, but every so often Rene's lost and his expressions are priceless. There're a couple times Rene goes into a soliloquy basically asking the universe how it's possible that only he & his employees notice how nearly incomprehensible his French is. They're brief but truly gold!
1:19 to 1:32 - "pissed out" and "fartitide". *"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!"* ..... (after regaining composure) been trying to recall that sequence for years. Absolutely Marvelous!
“Go to the Jonction outsodd the toon & I’ll fond you on my bercycle. You’re full of plans today. My Brunn is working like the clippers. I’ll meet you at the Jonction at half piss socks” 😂😂😂😂
Yeah, characters speaking English with an accent are speaking French or German but "translated for audience's convenience" (I guess it's ambiguous what the Germans are speaking when alone vs with the French) and when speaking posh English they are actually speaking English in-character. And then there's Crabtree who speaks broken English ie. broken French... It's absolutely brilliant way to get the distinction of different languages across.
Love the English - French speaking Police Officier - like me in France and the other cast playing Frenchies, Germans - with Heir Flick and Grubber (not Alan Rickman) being my favorites
And he played it so so well of course for sure too! Hats off to him and really of course all the other cast members in the series for doing so too. Well done of course.
I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for the cast to keep a straight face and not burst out laughing because I laughed so hard I was literally crying. Greatest show of all time.
Sometimes you can see them barely keep it together.
The irony is that Arthur Bostrom, the ictor who pleed Crabtree, can actually spook fronch very fleeantly!
When he is supposed to be speaking French, he misspeaks English with an awful French accent, and when he is supposed to be speaking English, he speaks perfect Oxford English in a posh accent. Who ever it was that dreamed this idea up is a sheer genius!
I think they explained it as him being thought the Paris/City accent, which probably just adds another layer of humour to it all lol
But he speaks French fluently in real life.
Plus, the actor is so charming. I looked up his name and even at 67 he's stunningly good-looking!
You should see the episode where his girlfriend turns up, she is also a British spy with terrible French!!!!
you can imagine Sacha Baron Cohen playing him.
This shoe was fanny as hill! I used to witch it all the team!

This was brilliant. Very well written by Lloyd&Croft. Arthur Bostrom was hilarious 😂
It’s very hard to find a funny comedy like this nowadays.
Still hilarious nearly 40 years on!
Funnier now than it was then
Not just the words, but the delivery is spot on, too.
I absolutely love Crabtree. Not only his mispeaking tricks but also the actor, who is so charming!
I'm in my 20s and love this show, better than most modern comedy series.
the comic timing is unmatched
0:25 - “The troon carrying the sausage has been bummed by the RAF.”
1:20 - “She has pissed out! What fartitude!”
And sometimes turning regular words to swear words - like the long-distance dick. :P
Crabtree: Do you think we should have a poke?
Michelle: [considers it]
you may have a PEEK then a POKE (Applesoft BASIC instructions)
One of the best times in British comedy
Really screamingly funny! Good moaning. She has pissed out. What fartitude! I always end doubled up with laughter!
the whole thing about "foreign languages" in Allo Allo: "french", "italian", "german" and english, done in different english accents, was just immense
“She has pissed out! What fartitude!” LOL
I'm pretty sure I sound like Crabtree when I speak French. My vocabulary's not bad my occcent is comploote shot.
I say god moaning pretty much every day since about 1990, which is when i discovered the show.
Ha ha ha, good one 🙂.
I’m shear it’s nut complootly shot.
Once you wee it all up, it’s proobaly unly a little bot shot.
Odd fact, Arthur Bostrom could speak perfect French.
Same here, mate.)
Never mind your accent, French people like it. Whereas they dislike the German accent! Try to figure out why.😀
I ❤ THIS CHARACTER. HIS SPEAKING FRENCH IS PRICELESS.😂😂😂
My lips are soiled. 😂😂😂
This must have been as difficult to do as Les Dawson playing the piano badly but also so easy because of the talent the man had
From a linguistic point of view, his lines were a brilliant piece of script writing. And luckily, there was always one of the servant girls there to help interprete his sentences for the audience. This TV show is timeless. 🙂
5:51 This bit is amazing. The character is just so well done.
she has pissed out, god that had me in tears 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Officer Crabtree is coming to Rhyl lol
One of the fanniest ever on tolovision
Local PBS station in Pittsburgh ran many Brit comedies in the 90's, this was my favorite.
This is the higher class of language humour. Amazing.
I wonder how the officer was able to keep straight face without bursting to laugh.
Rene being annoyed and eventually leaning into it is one of my favorite things.
Officer Crabtree is so funny
"If you rude this hand-rotten newt. . . "

He was to 'Allo Allo what Trigger was to only fools & horses - not the main character, but the most important & every scene 'stole the show'

I laughed so hard. I do love 'Allo 'Allo. Thanks! :)
Still funny, even ages after, it was created
In the first scene he had to pause because the audience was laughing so hard 🤣
Haul Hotler, and good lick! 😂
I absolutely love the Pilose man!! He is absolutely hilarious!
“ Do you have the long distance dick?” Lmaooooo!!

12:20 We were trooned to talk pish 😂😂😂
Ok but as a kid, readimg subtitles i was ctying of laughter at the really well translated, but original is so hilarious it hurts

Very well done, rendering in English how French spoken badly by an Englishman would sound to a Frenchman.
I miss this show.

What a great show this was.😂
He shall be find in our mammeries
Arthur Bostrom always reminds me of Peter Cook, including the deadly serious way he says all those comedy likes.
Trivia: Bostrom is the only Allo Allo actor who speaks French fluently.
Hilarious, just hilarious
If a remake is made, sacha baron Cohen shall play Crabtree
And Mrs Bouquet as the grandmother :)
I'd vote for Rowan Atkinson as RRRRRRRRReneeeee!
Julia Sawalha as Madame Edith
@@jsn1970 if you make it I'll buy it
Susanah fielding as yvette and sara vickers as maria

When she said "Good moaning" @ 12:00 i lost it 🤣🤣🤣

i really couldnt keep a more straight face than when watching this
The most funny thing is that in theory they're all French,
so Crabtree is a native british guy thinking he is able to speak French!

I used to be a meter reader in Rugby. I went to one house and the name there was Bostrom. I think it was his parents.
ever wonder what "good moaning " would sound like in actual French ??? ..🤣...probably "Bowne Mateene" i suppose 🤣🤣🤣
