  • Mr H returns for his first video of 2021 and visits the former Lancashire town of Westhoughton to take a look at a memorial bench on Market Street dedicated to the memory of the original lead vocalist of the legendary folk group the 'Houghton Weavers' who shot to fame in the late 70's and early 80's with their hit TV show 'Sit Thi Deawn'.

This is the first time I've seen this video and I'd like to say thank you. I am Tony's daughter and this is a lovely tribute. It would be my dad's birthday tomorrow ❤️

Hi Amy, glad to hear that liked the video and this little tribute to your dad.
Your dad has touched the lives of many through his love of folk music. Both those who can remember the times that he sang about and those of us who just simply remember watching and singing along to 'Sit Thi Deawn' on TV with either our parents or grandparents and the warm fuzzy feeling that those memories always bring. 😊

What a cracking video. It’s first time I’ve seen this. All my relative were brought up in Westhoughton around ‘The Crescent’ were grandma Geenhalgh and my aunties n uncle lived around her. Mum was born there.
I don’t know how true this but Tony was a house master at the deaf school in Bolton. My wife and I attended this school but came home everyday. Tony looked after the boys every night.
      Thank you for this video❤❤

Hi James, unfortunately I never got the chance to meet Tony Berry but from what others have said in the comments who have met Tony it was always a pleasure to have met him as he instantly made people feel at ease in his company.
Anyway enjoy your 'sit deawn' on Tony's bench the next time you are in 'Howfen' and all the best. 👍

Mon.. He was such a genuine man.. Breaks my heart every time I think about him.
My dad used to play in Wingates band that's how we got to know him. He was a gentleman of the highest order and will leave a big hole in everyone's heart that knew him including myself..
Here's to you Tony.. Until I meet you again 🍺

My wife and I (a couple of Aussies) saw the original weavers live when we lived near Manchester for 12 months in 1986-87.
After the show we "borrowed" the advertising poster and got the group's autographs, including Alan Fawkes.
A treasured memento along with CDs and videos we have collected over the years. We also met Fred Dibnah at a steam rally!

Hi Duncan, glad that you enjoyed the video. The Weavers are still going strong apparantly alas now without Tony Berry however only David Littler remains from the classic Sit Thi Deawn era with Dennis Littler and Norman Prince both leaving the Weavers to pursue other things in 1984 and 1999 respectively.

Hi Gary, yes the town of Westhoughton have done Tony Berry proud with his memorial bench and it's nice to see a town council willingly honour one of it's own unlike in my home town of Wigan where the council took decades and had to be pushed into honouring George Formby.

Thanks for this Mr H, I’ve been a fan of The Houghton Weavers for many years and seen them perform on many occasions, they always did a Christmas show every year with support from other locals like Bernard Wrigley and Bernie Flint. After their shows they were always willing to sign autographs and pose for photographs and have a chat, I was lucky enough to get a photograph of myself with the Weavers and got it signed too. Tony’s brother Jim sometimes performed with them too.

Hi Brian, and glad you that enjoyed the video. I've never seen the Weavers perform personally and only remember them from their TV show 'Sit Thi Deawn' and other TV apperances but from what I've read from people like yourself who have met them they were always down to earth lads who never let fame go to their heads.

Mr H, your videos are always excellent. You know what you are talking about and there is great appreciation and above all sensitivity. Great memories of the Weavers. Tony was a great singer and like all the Weavers down to earth. Actually, I think they got better and better musically. Always that unassuming humour. Never nasty. Thanks again for so many great videos.

03:08 Was that you SWEARING Mr H ... The BB* ..
I got my sister to cancel her TV licence Mr H . She did and then the empty "Threat" letters started to come .. She bottled it when they upped the anti and said they were going to send an investigator to her home.. And she could be fined £1000 (She only works in a supermarket and that is a lot of money for her) So sadly she started to subscribe to the BB* again .. Just to keep the peace (Her words not mine)
I can confirm my TV has worked without a licence Mr H for the last 5 Years .. And it works fine.

Hi Gareth, unfortunately my Dad passed away in the run up to Christmas and coupled together with him being ill since about August last year I've had neither the time or inclination to be making videos over these past four or five months as the experience has been quite draining.
But that said the world does eventually start turning again and it's good to be back as I really enjoyed this trip out to Westhoughton to make this little video and it's also good to hear that it has brought back some happy childhood Friday evening memories for you of being able to stop up past your normal bedtime because it was the weekend and no school in the morning.
