- Part 2 of Mr H and his friend Mike exploring a few of the locations around the historically Lancastrian town of Bolton that are still closely linked to the late great Fred Dibnah, with a visit to the legendary Steeplejack's grave located in Tonge Cemetery. Concluding with a visit to his mothers former home on Alfred Street that still bears the rather unusual chimney stack that Fred designed and built onto the house when he was in his late teens..
Appreciate the Fred Dibnah videos . I'm a Yankee and I have just heard of his adventures and achievements in his life . An Amazing Man that others need to hear about , Thank You ✌
Hi sofa king, I'm in Yorkshire and I have a mate in Maryland USA. We met when he was attached to the forces up in North yorks, he was planning on coming over this spring till the pandemic struck
RIP to an absolute legend they will never ever be another like him sadly missed
I did have the pleasure of meeting Fred some years ago, and I can assure you all, what you saw is what you got. A gentleman.
That memorial stone does not do that man the credit he deserves, what a legend he was, will never stop listening to that man, the definition of humble.
Wouldn’t it have been lovely to have seen more thought put into his headstone, a design that maybe reflects his great love for the industrial revolution. I know from my own experience that you always have to battle planning etc, but he was an MBE and contributed so much and I agree with you that this headstone does not give him the credit he so deserves.
My dad used to drink in the pub with Fred I only met the man once in the pub he never had to buy his own beer ..RIP Fred you were a masterpiece from a Bolton lad born and bred in breightmet
Brilliant. Shame he hasn't got a chimney head stone.
R.i.p. Fred. He is loved all the way here in the southern USA humbled and inspired by ole Fred. Thanks for the video I had wondered if he got buried there. One day I hope to go visit
I wish he had done a documentary studying the steeplejacks and heavy engineering over there, would have been fascinating to watch.
Fred Dibnah was a fantastic man all round. I never get tired of watching his videos. So so interesting compared to all the rubbish that's on TV today.
I think its a credit to you for keeping Fred's memory alive.., I nearly filled up when you showed his grave, well done and good vid mate.
When I was at he’s grave there was a pair of old boots. I loved that man R I p fella
Really enjoyed this video, thanks. Nice to pay respects to an outstanding man. RIP Fred.
Your videos are brilliant, I love the fact you put the clips you quote in, lovely touch! Thank you
Cheers Deathegg666, glad that you enjoyed the video and all the best. 👍
I watch Freds videos with absolute awe. The guy in my eyes is an absolute legend. The things he did on that little board at those heights is truly amazing. Awesome. Bloody crazy, but awesome.
Hi Jimmy, I too fully respect Fred both for the heights he worked at and the seemingly fearless way that he did it. The highest I've ever worked on the outside of a building in my younger days was 11 storeys high suspended in a tower crane basket and my sphincter was chattering like a Gatling gun the whole time that I was up there so massive respect to Fred and the bosun's chair as one mistake and "it's half a day with the Undertaker" as he used to say.
@@MrHsHotPot Hi fella, yep, I remember that comment. Such a brave bloke.Lol 'chattering like a Gatling gun ' LOL he would have loved that expression. All the best
Shouldn't his gravestone be about 200 foot tall?
I was thinking that. A chimney gravestone would have been awesome.
I'm fromBelgium, and i remember that i've watched Building britain when i was a young lad. Now i also remember the the host of that program. Fred Dibnah , its seems that i've nowed you for a long time, aldo we've never met. An amazing man!!!!
Fantastic Mr H, you do Fred proud, l’m starting to enjoy your videos as much as Fred’s! They’re a REAL JOY!
Many many thanks for your video, Fred was a one off a treasure that's sadly sadly missed.
We loved Fred right from his first broadcast and often re watch again and again RIP x
You are right about the chimney, would have been a fitting tribute to Fred R.I.P.
Thanks for the upload nice to see the great Englishman that Fred was is not forgotten ..his documentarys are just as watchable today as they were all those years ago brilliant man and much loved character of this Great Britain of ours ...
Thank you for the video lads, love Fred Dibnah. What a character
You make a reference to his marriages, I have it on good authority from some one who worked with his son in law (also in Engineering) that his marriage failures, were his own doing. His Victorian ideals and theory's extended to his wife's. Alyson his first wife detested him after their divorce, she put up with a lot, his endeavours in the back yard came first, including for finances. Not anybody's right to dwell in private lives, but sue his second wife left him for another man after too, she got fed up with his ways. Sound man, brilliant personality very educational, much missed, but marriages were not his strong point.
Nail on the head right there, even from watching his programs you get the impression his marriage definitely came some way behind everything else, one of his wifes just seemed to want a holiday now and then, which doesn't seem unreasonable at all...
A great man, but maybe not a great husband...
Yes, my feelings exactly. I was going to do my own comment on this, but I'm sure the hate replies would come in, so I will shelter in here. Everything was not rosy with Fred. I think he could be very selfish, he certainly treated his first wife very badly. Couldn't even go on a holiday without going up a bloody chimney! As to cutting his third wife out of the will, well, I don't know anything about that. Maybe some family pressure going on there.
Pretty certain they knew what they were getting into. Fred was a driven man and one of a kind.
I think you are correct. When watching the video of him going on what was supposed to be a family holiday, involving his wife pulling up ladders in the rain in Blackpool, i did feel for her and thought it was bad of Fred. But no one is perfect and he certainly fell short on that front.
Of course, have you seen the documentary? He was a very selfish man, I love him but it has to be said.
I'm from Bolton thanks for doing this video about Fred he was well loved in our town.
what a lovely video to make about the great one.. Thanks Lads from Cumbria
Thanks you for taking the time to do this.
I was expecting and he deserved a much grander headstone. Fred Dibnah a great Briton who should have been knighted.
A great great fantastic video. Really enjoyed watching it. Hope you have a great Monday. Many thanks from chris 👍
spot on lads, really enjoyed these videos.
Mr h is the future..ive noticed your subscription has been going up 200 each day...definately deserve to be in the 100.000 mark..really enjoy watching your vlog, especially in these difficult times, I'm an outdoors person so struggling a bit...keep them coming and thankyou again for your videos...To me back in 70s I have memorys of all the house going into silence on a Friday cos that's when his documentary,s were shown if my memory serves me rightly..thanks again take care
Cheers Sir, it's nice of you to say that my channel deserves more subs. 👍 Glad to hear that you are enjoying my videos and as a fellow outdoors person I feel your pain at having your time spent in the great outdoors limited at this moment in time. Also many thanks for all the various comments on my videos. All the best.
Great video. Fred was one of a kind and a LEGEND ✨
Good Morning Mr H ,This is Amazing!
I saw Fred Here on BBC America!
Amazing man!.
The theory that Fred had so much bad luck because his house may have been haunted is off course wrong, the real reason Fred had marital problems can be found by studying social changes in Britain and throughout the western World starting from 1960s onwards. His first wife was not satisfied with lack of enthusiasm by Fred for holiday plans, so she was able to up and leave Fred taking the kids with her, the second wife you can see in the films tried to change Fred making him take the child to nursery in one scene. The dynamic between Fred and the women is fairly typical and his experiences not uncommon. This is what makes the documentaries so interesting and the viewer can see Freds life developing over thirty years or so. The cause of Freds early death at 66 of bladder cancer was probably a result of Freds lifestyle, his heavy smoking, use of various chemicals and toxins over the years.
Fred was a great character fascinating character a legend of Great Britain
Great vlog mate ,always love listen to storys about Fred ...
even from Ireland ..he was legend .
Thank you so much for putting this up. Cheers :-)
Very interesting , watched all Freds fascinating tv documentary's, your videos keep his memory going, they make fascinating viewing especially to see his grave and where his mother lived. Brilliant videos and well put together with excellent commentary!!
Enjoyed those two Fred tribute videos alot, and will hopefully get over to see them in person one day, Loved that old saying of his "Did you like that"..Thanks Roy & Mike
Thanks Harry, glad that both you and others have enjoyed these two videos as I've been meaning to do these Fred Dibnah locations for while now. Both myself and Mike thoroughly enjoyed visiting and documenting Fred Dibnah's former home and workshops and it was an unexpected bonus and honour to be invited into the property by the as yet current owner Leon Powsney. Ideally I would have liked to have filmed more of the inside of Fred's former home and sheds but I didn't want to abuse Leon's hospitality.
@@MrHsHotPot The inside of Fred's house was like stepping back in time its even more impressive than the outside with all the Industrial memorabilia from old Forges and stuff
Sadly all that has now gone Granville Bennet, and has presumably been either auctioned off or sold privately. All that is left are empty spaces and holes where plaques etc. were once attached.
The chimney is amazing on that letter, just before you mentioned it, i was actually thinking the swirly art was representing steam, nice one! well spotted, that in itself makes it special. I notice the letter R looks like it represents a falling chimney.
Very interesting, he was a real character and brought millions viewing pleasure !
Thanks for this video, I visited the cemetery not so long ago to pay my respects
I’ve got 90 percent of his work but have never been able to find “A Year With Fred” nice to see a clip from it.
Hi Mr h finally got to Fred's house last Thursday absolute privilege to be there went with wife and daughter the guy who was there kindly let us look around the house no one lives there now such a shame as it still has the charm of Fred living there it looks like his back yard is used for car cleaning my wife said she would love to buy it if only we could afford it also went and paid our respect at is grave fantastic reward hours
Great video thank you for your interest in a brilliant bloke well done 👍
great video fella, i called up from county durham yesterday to pay my respects to this great man.
I was there today to show my respects
I loved Fred Dibnah a true Gentleman and great Crafts person.
Stay safe from Liverpool.
I don’t think that Fred would have liked being called a ‘craftsperson’! Utter PC bollox. He was a craftsman and proud of it.
Thank you
I admired Fred from a young age 😊
What a talented amazing man 💓 I watched his series as it came up each week . Just one of britains greats . I thought no he had an incredible sense of humour very philosophical. RIP you went too soon Fred 💓j
Thanks for making this video. It's much appreciated. Cheers from the U.S.
I wish they had put up the headstone he said he’d liked to have had. Thanks for another great video on a great man
Cheers Yogi Beer, and glad that you enjoyed the video. I agree that it would have been nice to have given Fred the memorial that he wanted either by removing the chimney stack from his mother's former house that he built when he was 17, which also looks out of place where it is in my opinion or if that wasn't possible built an exact replica of it over his grave. Many thanks for commenting and all the best. 👍
Thanks for posting ! 🏴👍🙋🏻♂️❤️
I’m born and bred north west, but never heard the term “clemped” meaning hungry before 😂. Must be a Bolton expression. Thanks for these insights into Fred’s life, what he did and where, and I particularly enjoy the then and now bits. Some things improve with time but sadly not always.
thanks for uploading!
Great watch. Like the respect shown to all the graves at the Cemetary too. Well done chaps 👍

did meet him in my Warrington when made an advert in a midland hotel.. yes agree he loved by everyone that ever meet him. RIP Fred,,,,, thanks Mr h
A Beautiful hard working man ,tough as nails and full of wisdom ,a sad loss to great Britain ,RIP Fred 👍👍👍
The sad thing is that the country is now full of foreign invaders who have little or no regard for our working-class ancestors like Fred
I'm from wigan, love your videos
A modern day heritage trail. Thank you. Fred would be proud of you.
Another good one mate, love Fred Dibnah! It'd be interesting to see if you can find the gravestones he was leaning against and film them today
Ah great minds think alike Ringway Manchester! 😉 It's funny you should suggest this as I said to my friend Mike at the time off camera that it would be interesting to locate the gravestones where he gave the interview back in 1983 and see just how close they are to the actual spot where Fred is now buried as it would be spooky if that interview was filmed in the same area.
I get the biggest kick out of Fred. Sad that I was there in Bolton in 1982 for a time and wasn't aware of him then. I would have loved to meet him. I met some great people there and will never forget it.
Brave man, thanks for the great memories Fred
Wonderful video my friend. Cheers uncle pap
Miss Fred, met him once, awesome chap!
did you like that ????? brilliant thanks for showing us
I seem to remember Fred saying on one of those telly broadcasts about his mother's chimney that "It ad an ell of a draw on it". Anyway a great man the likes of which i can not see been seen again. Thanks for showing the location of his grave i hope to pay my respects in the future. I have been round in the wagon to see the house a couple of times and been to have a look at his mothers chimney, which you can see as you go past on the A666, i always look for it. Thanks for the video, now off to find pt1.
Think he said something like ‘it’ll sock you oot ya slippers’ haha
Seems to be a big interest in Fred from over the pond in the last couple of years which is nice to see...
What a great guy he was i saw the last one he did in my home town of Royton Oldham what a site that was i was only 7 but remember it like it was yesterday...
you just have to love Fred
Indeed Silver, they don't make 'em like him anymore!
Used to be a good meat and tater pie shop in Castle Street if I remember. Cafe in Bolton Market did the best steak puddings I ever tasted. Chippy on Tong Moor road was amazing. But that was all a few years ago now. Great video Mr H brung back some nice memories.
Great days ,great memories ...how they have ki!led off the local British culture
Watched every video of Fred as they were released, what a great bloke he was. Looks like his Mum's house was No 10 to me??
Mr h is very important he keeps the legends alive for future generations hes so interesting not just on fred
Great stuff guys. Keep it up please.
I thought I could hear poor Fred turning in his bloody grave at the sight of that pathetic headstone. That man deserved better !!RIP Fred.
A better memorial for FD would be a smoke stack - that stone doesn't do the man justice.
Totally agree with you Rob, but with it now coming up to 16 years since Fred's passing I think that ship has sailed and I doubt Bolton Council who manage Tonge Cemetery would allow planning permission for it now so long after his death.
He does have a bronze statue in Bolton Town Centre. Unfortunately, it doesn't look a lot like him. I think it must have been the same bloke who did Ronaldo's bronze.
Fantastic video pal
Enjoyed that lads.
Al from Newcastle
Cheers Al, glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. All the best. 👍
Great stuff , very interesting 🧐
Fred is top bloke good upload guys
Fearless Fred always gave us a laugh back in the day but he was also a passionate oracle about the building prowess of the great victorians and he always seemed a little sad to down a massive chimney that had stood the test of time almost like he was erasing the very industrial heritage that he loved so much. Much missed.
My uncle was a steeplejack from Bolton he got killed with another Steeplejack from Bolton in 1954 the give way and they both fell My uncle was Brian Vaughan age 21 died and his mate Gordan Ainsworth aged 21 died later in hospital. A third man grabbed a rope and survived he was Arthur Willis from Moston. All I have is a paper clipping on the accident which I put on here in case anyone was interested in reading it. The title is Bolton's forgotten Steeplejacks.
The newspaper heading was Again They Brave Death Chimney. My uncle is buried in the same Cemetery as Fred and not far from his grave.
Or even a scaled down chimney with a little ladder up the side would have been very fitting on his grave
Just watched the vids on utube about him. What a man. RIP Fred
Nice video thanks boys 👍
Cheers Matt, glad that you enjoyed the video and all the best. 👍
On his headstone, since the "b" is evocative of a chimney, with curls of smoke coming out, look and the capital "R" reminds me of a roller, with the long front leg and the curls rolling off it. Does anyone else see it?
God bless Fred Dibnah from NY USA
Makes me proud to be a northerner watching your vids
I'm 28 and I must have watched all his videos now haha 😄
A guy's just rang Allan Beswick on BBC Radio Manchester/Lancashire and mentioned this video mate!
Cheers Ringway Manchester, and many thanks for letting me know. 👍 I've listened to an archived copy of the show this morning after reading your comment and although the caller doesn't mention my channel by name there's a very high possibility that it is my video he has called in to talk about from what he describes. Cheers once again and all the best buddy.
Enjoyed the Fred Dibnah tribute video. Sorry you didn't get your pies.
Greetings from Ireland a big fan of Fred's what a guy I think he was born in the wrong era. Your videos are great seeing his house and his grave, wonder are his sons carrying on his steepleJack trade.
Somehow i think the headstone reflects Freds "no frills" character. One thing missing which struck me though....his sons name isn't on the headstone.
Why would his sons name be on the headstone? As far as I know neither of them have died
God Bless Fred Dibnah
hi what was the pie fred liked from that pie shop ?
Got an identical Podger to that one in my garage somewhere.😁
An interesting man , good video Mr hot pot .
