I drove a semi truck across the country for nearly twenty years. Every winter I would say, "this is my last winter." Took me twenty years to finally quit.

We also had sleet and freezing rain prior to it changing to snow. Underneath all the snow was ice. In those conditions it doesnt matter what kind of vehicle or tires you have. Weird pattern I noticed surely just a coinkidink. All of the 18 wheelers that wiped out had California regulation tandems. In bad weather you have to slide your tandems back and put as much weight on your drives as possible. If your trailer is heavier then your drives you aren't getting good traction and if you start losing control it's way more difficult to regain it. The further back your tandems the more stable you'll be.

Drivers hauling Amazon trailers are some of the worst semi drivers out there. Not so much on their skill but their recklessness and desire to do ANYTHING to make the max amount of pay possible (which I think Amazon only pays you for the number of trailers you haul per day instead of cents per mile or a flat cost of the load). I've talked to novice drivers who excuse the behavior as "they need to make money," but you won't be making money long if you drive unsafe like them!

The only advantage about Amazon is that the weight is usually 20,000 or less? But the per mile is low. To make anything in trucking you must get a decent per mile rate. If you don't you are wearing out tires and using lots of fuel for your very hard work.

  • @daha7864

Mandatory automatic chains, forcing companies to install these $6,000 (sounds like a lot, but it really isn't) push button, from the cab, operated chains on all, all weather trucking outfits, will significantly reduce these accidents, along with the vehicle being placed at a governed speed of 45 mph (or chain manufacturer's speed rating, whichever is less). I bet, with today's technology, there's even a way for the chains to automatically engage when conditions require their use. Or start requiring all companies that have had a certain number of jackknifed rigs in snow/ice install them (like amazon prime).

This is just ridiculous. If people are this desperate to being hurt they might as well put themselves in their caskets and say forget about it. If they only care about risking death thats where they'll be is dead. Theres always the next day tomorrow. I hate this kind of thinking with people. Dumb ridiculous behavior.
