I recently bought a cartwheel penny. Even though it’s in poor condition, I am proud to own one.
I just love this coin and consider mine one of my collection favorites. It is indeed a good coin to draw people to numismatics

I've seen gilded versions of these coins and they are quite impressive. Just as it was w/ this coin, the Morgan silver dollar had the same problem, and many of those either rested in bank vaults for generations, or were melted for bullion value. Although I can't imagine carrying such a large copper coin of low denomination in my pocket... imagine making change w/ these coins in circulation!

This video actually made me think, 'I really need one of these coins' and I went out searching on Ebay, until I found one listed as a one pence, but it showed photos of the thick edge and I immediately knew it was a twopence, so I bid on it and won, so now I'm expecting to get a "hockey puck or dinner plate" in my mail.
If you don't mind my asking, how much did you buy it for?

@@TheHammeredCorner Oh gosh! Sorry I'm responding so late!!! It was magnificent, very nice example, and it cost only £15 (shipping was about £5) so overall VERY cheap. I wish I could send a photo of it, but I don't think I'll need to, considering it was similar to yours. Mine just had a slightly lighter colour, less edge knocks, but several more scratches, deep ones too!
I have a nice penny version one that my dad gave me for Christmas. Very nice two pence!

what an absolute beast! made to prevent counterfeits I think as the value was the same as the value of the metal. Also there is a cartwheel half penny but you would be lucky to find one of those! I am glad we don't have coins like that these days 😂

Awesome video (and channel, just recently discovered it)! These are amongst some of my favourite coins, they're just bizarre and unique. I like them that much I own 9 cartwheel pennies myself, some aren't in the best condition but most are as good as the one pictured here :). There's also an isle of man version! It has the three legs symbol on the back, I can imagine it is very rare as I've only ever seen one for sale before and it was like 300 quid.

@@TheHammeredCorner Yeah! Can you imagine trying to count out even £1 in them...would need a horse and cart to bring them along lol. I don't know how they stored them in banks and such either, seems a massive hassle.

Whats the best way of cleaning one of these, i have one from 1799 but its quite faded, or dirty
How dirty is it? If it has loose dirt, then take it off, but if it's just patina then don't artificially clean it. I'll try and find a good video for you.

You're welcome. The darkness is probably just because it's oxidised which is extremely common on copper coins. I wouldn't worry, because I'd say approximately 85% of coins that age are that dark. If there's no loose dirt, I'd say that you don't need to do anything to that coin. Glad to help. If you've got any more questions, ask away.
