    I found a Edward the confessor hammer penny last weekend detecting. I’ll in one piece. Left it in de-ironised water for 5 min and left to air dry did it a couple of times. The patina is fully in tact. Looks amazing. Love this channel.

    It was brutal, but that was the 12th century, life was short, cheap and brutal. Yet the quality of coin striking in this era was awful. If you look at the late Anglos Saxon pennies, they were well struck and beautiful coins - but as we head into the Norman era the quality goes down and generally stays down except for small reforms like the Tealby pennies and Long Cross Pennies, but even after a few years they fall off and its like that right through to Edward's reforms in 1279 or thereabout. I have my eyes on an Ethelred penny and its just beautiful, round, well struck and professional looking!
