This one, Back to the Future, Breakfast Club...the list just goes on and on. I grew up in the 80’s and yes kids, it really was that great.

The book was challenging to translate into film for many reasons. There were 26 chapters, to match the 26 letters of the aphabet, and each chapter had a mini story with a sub-plot ("But that's another story.") connecting the main plot together. Years ago I contacted Ende's editor, and he responded back to me. He revealed the publishers were pressuring End to finish writing The Neverending Story, even if it meant a shorter book. Ende resisted, on the claim that "Bastian hasn't found his way out of Fantastica yet." So, in a way, the characters in The Neverending Story were also alive and very real to him in imagination.
I re-read it a couple of years back and while I felt that the chapters intertwined very well together I did feel that it was something that would have been better adapted to a series rather than a movie (or actually pair of movies, though if Ende was unhappy about the first movie I can only imagine his inchoate rage at the second one). Of course at the time such a thing was completely unheard of.

That was the first movie and I'm only a quarter of the way in!" and then reading what was obviously the source for the second movie and thinking "oh... that was bad." I was like 12 at the time and could tell it was a bad translation. I also definitely cried when I finished the book. What a gem.

@@stevejenks9940 Most sources say it was a translation choice from the original German. Not sure why the book and movie translated it differently. Generic term for a fantasy land. Disney's Fantasia may have been one reason the book chose not to mess with the rights to that word. I love the book, but I would not change anything about the original film.
Having read the book, I am glad they made some of the changes they did but they did leave out and change stuff they shouldn't have. The second movie could have been so much better and there have possibly been a trilogy. I hated the name Fantastica, it sounded so fake. I also disliked the book for the majority of the read because Bastien is a complete and utter tool(the 2nd movie got that part right). I think the 1st movie was really good for an adaptation for it's time. It's simple and rather slow paced but still fun.
Yeah. Please don't remake this. It's a jewel that should remain untouched.

Leo DiCaprio had ideas of making a new movie adapted from NeverEnding Story. Not a direct remake of this one, but much closer to the original novel. Alot of things from the novel were left out in this movie. However, nothing ever came out of it.
The Neverending Story, The Dark Crystal, and The Labyrinth are my childhood favs! I can still watch these anytime and love every minute of it!!!

This is why many 80s fantasy movies are still beloved. The animatronics and puppeteering was amazing. As well as the stories being complex and full of feeling. Unfortunately so many kid's movies today are as vanilla and samey as is gets. They can't all be winners and they weren't in the 80s either, but it seems like from like 1980-1995 was a golden age for kids movies. Damn near every Disney movie from that era is a masterpiece. And then you also have the Neverending Story and the Dark Crystal and others that were amazing as well.

I wore my dad out with this movie...when i was a kid i would play it and then rewind it and watch it again and would do that all day until he told me to turn it off and I would cry!! I absolutely love this movie and Noah Hathaway was my husband lol!! Another movie was secret garden and black beauty....such good memories!! Now i gotta watch all these movies again

When I was a kid I begged my mom to let me check out The neverending story in the library to read. The librarian said that this book was over my head and that I would not be able to read it and understand it and I wouldn't finish reading it. I felt like I was denied something special. The book was there but I just couldn'tcheck it out because it wasn't in my age group reading recommendation. When I got the book as an adult I thought that younger me would still be able to read and enjoy it. The book is a lot darker. bastion begins to have a lot more control over the world. Anything that he imagines becomes reality there. if he says something happened long ago in the past it did and becomes part of the present. If he says something's going to happen in the future it will happen. He becomes his own little mini god in the world. He becomes boastful and bratty. He even forgets his appearance is a fat little bullied kid. He is clothed and beautiful oriental clothing like a prince. He begins to lose himself in the world that he is creating forgetting where he came from. The childlike empress basically has to put a stop to it, forcing bastion back into his own reality in the end before he loses himself. By the end he becomes more confident and comfortable with himself and is finally ready to return home. he discovers that others have read The neverending story and that the point in the end is learning to love yourself and others.

@JeffCaplan313 I like the second one OK. It went there, But in the book Bastian becomes basically really annoying and insufferable. It was probably going to be too dark for kids to see this completely played out. Bastian even begins to dislike himself in the book, but forgot who he was to begin with. Once he found himself, he was able to love himself, and most importantly his Father.
This and The Dark Crystal are my movies of childhood. I love the cast, story, music, etc!

I love "Neverending Story" and "Stand By Me" from my childhood as far as kid movies are concerned. But I need to watch Neverending Story again now that I am grown.

Noah Hathaway: you no doubt had a difficult part to play in, and now knowing what you’ve gone through play this character I can appreciate the hard work you put into. You portrayal of such a great warrior who wasn’t afraid to tear up when he lost a friend, yet still finds the strength to continue on to complete his mission was iconic and can never be forgotten. With that said, thank you for your backbreaking performance.

The Neverending Story and Labyrinth are priceless and they are timeless. I watched both with my daughter and son when they were just kids. We have now shared and passed that tradition on to our 7 year old granddaughter. Neither will ever need to be remade and certainly would be a disappointment if they were.~APRIL LIPKE

Absolutely loved this movie as a kid.
Would love a remake though, made into a high-budget series spanning 26 episodes, one for each chapter of the book.
This way the entire story gets told and stays true to Ende's vision.
I would trust no one in Hollywood to do it properly in 2023.

I just love this movie yes I get sad every time I see the swamp of sadness scene I don’t care how old I am still this movie is still a great movie.
For me the movie never left a trauma as a child, it was deep, sad but soo inspiring and filled with love and friendship and magic.

My favorite movie and book of all time! I own both editions of the soundtrack. I own 4 editions of the book in English, the German edition, and the 6 German sequels. I took 4 years of German in high school and college so I could read the book in its original language.

This has always been my favorite movie since I was a child & even to now. I don't believe it will ever be replaced & I've seen some amazing movies through the years. My biggest take from it was to never let anyone take your dreams away from you, no matter how small. They might not mean much to someone else, but they can be your whole world!

It's heartbreaking
The movie, the cast, and the song has a special place in my childhood. I never and I mean NEVER get tired of listening to the iconic song nor watching clips of the movie or the entire thing honestly. It really held up well over the past almost 40 years now and honestly I'm more than fine that they never do a remake to this movie, least likely not in my life time. I'm also extremely please to see the next generation appreciate the movie as much as I did when I was a kid.
If you ever read the book you’ll understand why Michael Ende was furious. The book is an underrated masterpiece.

Not the first one the first movie is a masterpiece!
After renting the video (on VHS), I ordered the book, which a German friend of mine said was read in _grade schools_ in Germany, my immediate reaction was: _"Grade school?_ I doubt if most _high-schoolers_ in the US could read this!" The pages were so thin that I had to use a cardboard bookmark instead of my usual thin metal one, which put tiny tears on the page the first time I used it. Later, I discovered the movie was only a _portion_ of the book's story---and two sequels were made. I never saw the third film, but I thought the first sequel failed to create the same magic as the original. Stay safe, everyone.
Don’t ever watch the third one. EVER. Spare your soul the torment, there are no redeeming qualities in that movie.
At least the second one is passable as a movie, though not exactly a strong sequel, but I can’t find one good thing to say about the third garbled mess of immaturity and child pandering.

Herr Ende must have rolled over in his grave when he saw the third movie! It was truly awful. For the love of Phantasien, don't watch it. Our beloved characters are not themselves. The line that really got me was the Empress saying, "I never thought to take the Auryn shopping!"
That Horse dying gave me nightmares for years!...
The horse didn't die as we now know - it had a special trap door that would lower the horse so it would look like it was drowning.

Truly one of my childhood favorites.
I first watched this when I was really young. I was terrified of all of the giant creatures. I had nightmares about my dog turning into Falkor, and no one could see it but me.
I didn't watch it again till years later when my little sister wanted to watch it. I was still young, but they didn't bother me at all that time.
The only thing that bothered me was that my lil sis was about the same age I was when I first watched it, and wasn't bothered at all, she loved it.
But I was finally able to enjoy the movie, and grew to love it too.

The movie was just the first half of the book. The second half was made later in The Neverending Story 2 . But the original will always have a very special place in my heart.

Neverending Story 2 was barely based on the second half of the book. Even reading the synopsis, you can see that there is almost no comparison. And yes, it was a terrible movie. The second half of the book is where most of the themes of the book come into play - I'd almost say it's the most important part of the book, because that is the part where consequences for decisions are clearly shown, and where Bastian actually learns and grows as a character. After reading the book, I can understand why Ende hated the movie and felt it didn't' accurately portray the themes he had laid out in the book, even though I love the movie as well.
The original film was beautiful, but the end really did seem slap-dashed on. If it had been a reality back then to green-light a two-movie deal for this book the same way they did with Peter Jackson and LOTR, I think it could have been so much more. The ending of the original movie could have been revised to a to-be-continued where Bastian renames the Empress, and suddenly finds himself in the world of the book, responsible for recreating it anew... (fade to black) And then film the sequel as the second half of the book at the same time. Sadly, that was not a possibility with the way producers "bet" on films back then.
Yall all bouta be mad at me.. I actually love neverending story 2 and prefer it to the first one 😌

If they were to do a remake of The Neverending Story, I think the best way to tackle it would be via a couple part mini series on one of the big streaming platforms. (Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/HBO etc) That way the filmmakers involved will have more space to full cover the narrative of the original book and expanding what the original film did. I've come to understand the original book is actual composed on movie 1 and some parts of movie 2. It'd be nice if the creator would be willing to consider a high budget mini series option.
Oh. This would be a fun way to learn the characters better. I would watch that. But this movie should be unchanged!

Although since posting this 2 years ago, I think I heard there was a Neverending Story TV mini series. I forget the accuracy level. But I think it mainly aired in the UK back in the late 90s early 2000s or so. I think. 🤔

The best way to make a Remake is a Trilogy. Part 1 is the great search of Atreju, Part 2 is the age of the Emperor of Phantasien (Bastian) and Part 3 is Bastian's way back in his world.
A Roadmovie, an Epicmovie and a Drama.
And then an adaptation of Ende's second novel Momo😍
Its the only movie, which comes to my mind, where filming in a film studio totally worked. I love the handmade effects.

I saw _The Neverending Story_ at a press screening in New York (I was in my early 20s, and a film reviewer for my college newspaper).
I _love_ fantasy, and I was really enjoying this film; the Gmork's speech of what is the Nothing had me in choking sobs, which hit me again during the end credits.
This is a super great movie. I love this movie! I still watch this movie til this day. Dark crystal, Legend with Tom cruise, never ending story are all amazing movies!

I actually own two copies of the book. I bought my second one, because it was older. There is a version that has green and red text. The color was based on whether it was in Fantastica or in Bastian's world. In the ones I have there is two styles of text, regular and italic. I'm still looking for the other version.

You can find it on eBay. The English hardcovers are usually the red and green text.

I read the book as a child and I was very disappointed in the movie as well when I watched it as a teenager. It basicly ends halfway through the book. Well I was glad that it brought non german speaking audiences to Michael Ende's work and I really hope it made people read the original story. Oh and for fans of Ende, try to find a translation of Momo, in my opinion his best book ever!

Watched this all the way through finally with my 7 year old last week...amazing. Followed up by The Monster Squad.
I was a bookworm when I was a kid and I was so mesmerized by the book. I was probably a bit too young to read it but I loved it nontheless. I remember being incredibly disappointed by the movie. Such an immense let down and everything that at least did appear looked so wrong. As I grew up I was constantly surprised at how many people loved the movie lol. I can see now what value this movie holds, especially considering how soul-less most of modern cinema is. The puppets/practical effects are beautiful and there is a lot of love that went into the production. I don't think I will ever enjoy the movie but I can appreciate it as its own thing seperate from the book and acknowledge/respect the meaning it holds to a lot of people. But I also respect Endes opinion and he has every right to have felt that way. Must be heartbreaking to experience something like this regarding your own creation

No doubt there are many good children's movie released in the 1980s that did not do well at the box office. The Never Ending Story is such a movie that has went under- appreciated for the past thirty five years. It is about time that The Never Ending Story gets the publicity and respect that it deserves.
This is my favorite childhood movie. It’s strange to me how anyone could dislike it.
Love this movie!! Truly a beautiful and beyond classic movie, that I believe the generations to come will appreciate everything about this film.

I met Noah Hathaway a few years ago in an elevator in Knoxville. He’s COVERED in tats and told me he’s a firearms instructor which is BAD ASS.
Noah Hathaway really was perfect in this movie.
