I have been thinking about this a lot, but does any one think that Wolfgang Peterson should do a George Lucas and remaster The Never Ending Story with improved effects, like some of the the back ground matte paintings and blue screen stuff? Obviously not as extreme as what George done ( eg, Gmork pounced first) , but enough to improve it a bit visually

Absolutely not. It would devalue the immense efforts made and the true art that it was. I mean, should we digitally modify classic paintings to make them more "realistic"? No! Because it would be blasphemous. Why should the art of filmmaking be treated any differently?
Wil Mees I am not talking about replacing the puppets and practical effects, but just the back grounds, flying scenes, etc. They look bad and I am pretty sure not much effort was done to make those matte paintings and other back grounds, which were most likely photo graphs printed on a huge back ground set piece

The look on their faces and the emotion that came through was the same look I must have had on my face and in that moment I was my parents looking at myself as I looked at my daughters. There was no time there was only everything all at once. A never ending moment where every thought,dream,action could be.

The Neverending Story Part 1 movie ending was perfect!! I was a 12 year old boy when I first seen it and of course at the time had bullys messing with me at my school in New York City. To see the bullys get trashed literally made me feel great! I remember jumping around at that part yelling "ya muthafu**as take that!!" I am a 41 year old retired marine 6'4" 240 lbs with kids now and I was over the moon happy to see my kids have the same reaction as me at 12 years of age. I truly love this movie!!!!!
Yes, it's understandable that a writer can get emotional about changes to his book to adapt it to film, but I loved that scene as a kid as well. That felt like justice to a bullied kid. Plus once we'd seen Falkor, we all wanted to ride on his back, so to have Bastian do just that at the end of the movie AND get revenge on his bullies on top of that, it's just so satisfying.
Something about this movie truly transported me to another world. Over the years since, I often compared movies to this one. Why don't they feel as real? Why did NS scare me so? Why does it have an amazing feeling to it? I realize it is partly because they didn't have CGI back then. This movie is magic because of that imo. The beauty of the 80s is encapsulated within this timeless gem.
An amazing masterpiece. This is when movie making was movie making. One of 2 masterpieces. The other of course was The Dark Crystal.Witch took 5 years to make. Jim Henson at his best....

I saw this movie in the theater when I was just 5 years old. And had the privilege of seeing it again in the theater for a special showing. I own it on Blu-ray. It is my all time favorite movie.

The Neverending Story will always be one of my most favorite childhood movies I have ever seen. It still gets me to this day and I’m 40. Still love it. No CGI, and still more real than some CGI movies today. I would love to see a reboot using today’s technology, but would it be as good as the original? That’s a good question.

The film was awesome because today you can tell there was zero CGI and thus, the effects were so much better by building real sets - when you see Noah Hathaway going between the giant Sphinx you realize those are real 60 foot tall sculptures.
This is an epic. Moonchild is still cute. In the story there is this wonderful moment that I wish had made it into the film, where he wishes for the moment to last forever, and it does. Its so beautiful.
I remember the first time I saw the "Swamp of Sadness" scene when Artax, the horse, was sinking and Noah and Barrett were crying. I wanted to reach out to the screen and take them both into my arms to comfort them. I still get a huge lump in my throat when I see that scene.
when i went to see this in the theater for the 30th anniversary they showed this documentary before the movie started so it was great to see how each scene was filmed and brought to life. obviously being an equestrian myself seeing how the Welsh Pony was trained and the swamps of sadness was filmed was awesome!!
I was 9 when The Never-ending Story came out and I've watched it multiple times including just recently on Netflix. It'll never get old because it's such an uplifting & magical experience!
I loved this movie as a kid I was 6 years old when it came out and went to the drive in movies to watch it then I had the VHS of it and wore the tape out. It was great I loved the Luck Dragon he was so cute I wanted one after seeing that movie
I think this and Das Boot are the best German films ever made. Most of the people working on those two movies where the same, especially Doldinger with his amazing, amazing soundtracks. What a genius!

CanadianMaster1 oh god no ! I'm sorry I should clarify. This first movie is in my top three. Haha I've never seen the third. I've been warned! I do find the 2nd one slightly better then most people do though.
This shows why you cant make documentaries with many modern CGI-movies. "So, here you can see a bunch of people sitting at PCs" . Practical Effects will alway beat CGI. We, as humans can "feel" it. I wished Barret Oliver and Noah Hathaway would also have been interviewed like Tami Stronach. I always had a crush for the latter, when watching the movie I was the same age. By the way, if the Documentary is from 2014, she must have been 42 at the time of filming. Incredible, she looks better than most woman in her twenties. A natural beauty indeed and her acting as childlike empress was really perfect.
I'll admit, I saw the Movie first, which inspired me to read the Book, which really IS a Neverending story, it doesn't just stop where this movie ends. Truly IS a magical movie, it was produced at a time when the incredible digital effects we have today were not created yet, so they really had to think how to tell the story with what they had available at the time. The Actors really fit their roles, and told the story with strong emotions, and really dragged you into the tale. What a great movie, and for a while the Title score was my theme song for Life.
randallintx I saw the movie before the book too. My auntie got me the VHS around 1989, but I didn't see it till around 92 . I then saw the book at the book section in John Lewis's I think and the book really draws me in. I also liked the second movie as a kid, despite what people say about it. I have rewatched the second film as an adult and can see the flaws, but still think it has its good moments. The third film is just a disaster What did you think of the second and third films?

If it weren't for the movie I might never have known about the book. It's funny how,as kids we never really paid attention to the true meaning of the story but as adults we can look back on it and see it in a totally different way.
30 years??? I just watched this movie on 7th May 2022, and what I thought my son with this movie is amazing!!! watch it now you are 40 and more, amazing!!!
I absolutely love this book. It’s full of magic and wisdom. Michael Ende created something really unique end everytime I read the book it really touches me. I know that it may be a nice movie if you see it on its own, without a book. But to see it after having read the book…it just breaks my heart and I can feel Michael Endes heart break as well. I don’t mind scenes getting cut off or bad cgi or anything like that but this film didn’t understand at all the spirit and meaning of this book. Every scene I see captures a completely different feeling than the book was trying to give. I feel like the directors didn’t even read the book much less understand it. If they say, it wasn’t possible to realise the fantasy in a film, that’s just not true, they just had a lack of creativity. There are puppet shows that convey the story much more closely. I am really sorry for all those poor people that saw this film bevor reading the book. You’ve been disseized of something really magical and beautiful.
While I will always have a lot of childhood sentiment attached to the film, I completely agree that it misses the mark as to the deeper meaning(s) of the novel. It also lacks the meta elements of the book (an example being that Bastian hears the Old Man of Wandering Mountain recite some passages that we readers have literally read in the opening chapter), which Ende clearly added to get the reader more involved in the story (as the book-within-the-book did with Bastian). And of course, Bastian chasing his bullies on Falkor's back is the worst possible substitute for the entire second half of the novel, which conveys the importance of the balance between, and symbiosis of, fantasy and reality.
I don't think you could get Barret Oliver in any interview for any amount of money... unless it was about photography. He left acting totally without an explanation and is a very private person now.
Yep and i think Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) Left on bad terms with them. He was banned from the premier due to suing the company the same year. The reason why was because he was paid only for 3 months worth of work when they filmed for an additional 10 months. He was told that if he didn't drop the charges, which he didn't that he'd be disallowed to attend it.
This came out when i was 5 and EVERYONE, including the teachers, were raving on about it at school all that year. We used to rollplay it at recess, i used to WISH i was the childlike empress (fyi she's from Iran, so cool) and marry Atreyu🤣. Seriously its bloody captivating. My favourite scene is when Atreyu firsts visits the Ivory tower. Just look at the coatumes in that scene. AMAZING. The other scene is the last one, where the bullies see him and run away. I just love it. The music, especially the scene where Atreyu runs past the sphinx, is really what makes this movie sensational. It will forever be my favourite childhood movie besides the Dark Crystal
Wow, such a great movie. I don't think they can do such things today when everything is CGI. There's a reason why Jurassic Park was filmed with animatronics for some scenes - you can feel the difference in the emotional connection between the characters and the creatures. But Tami was really great in this movie. A fantastic movie.

I love watching these documentaries, after watching The Dark Cristal series on Netflix the fever is back again, I wanna watch all behind the scenes, buy all books, collectibles, lol! This is one of the most important films in my life, I still love it! You can tell Wolfgang is such a sweet soul and that is definitely imprinted in the movie
I'm still not convinced that the horse wasn't stressed out with that scene.. and I am pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed to happen today. As much as I loved the film, that scene always haunted me and as I grew up, I was sure that the horse would not have been happy in that situation, no matter how 'used to it' it became.
My family LOVES THIS MOVIE!!! My son grew up on this movie and just a few days ago..my son introduced this magical movie to his 6 year old daughter…she just adored it!!! Yes magical imaginative minds are what’s truly missing today with kids…this is a big hit in our family…thank goodness the movie was made thank you! The song is one of my all time favorites …

But there is indeed a huge difference between people born in the late 70's and the early 80's. I know because I was born in 79. The kids 3-5 years later were soft asf. And now they're raising kids... @@jonathanspencer5884 Hard to say. The Baby Boomers were soft asf too... the hippies of the 60's. Their parents, the ones who fought in WWII had it rough and created better times. Unfortunately I think those better times soften people. The US economy was in bad shape in the 70's to about 81. Even if a kid from the late 70's was too young to know what was going on they still lived through it and absorbed it to some regard. Then the economy boomed like crazy within a short span. And really has been strong since for the most part. Social media has really contributed yeah. But more than that parents who can't even discipline their own children anymore from fear of having social services called on them. Liberal policies have softened our society. When I was in elementary school the principal could beat you with a paddle. They did away with that a few years later. Now these kids can walk all over you. Yep, 82-84 seems about right for this millennial group. Especially 84 on.

This movie is 100x better than todays efforts because it dealt with intense issues like sadness, fear, terror, courage, loneliness and more. Movies these days are not bold or brave enough to take us on a Journey that tests our every emotion and awakens our every sense before giving us a finale of hope and triumph.
The movie would not have been what it was without the perfect casting of the three leads, and the stellar performances they delivered. They were all empowered, but vulnerable as well. It pleases me that while none of them remained actors, they didn't have any of the issues child stars often do. It saddens me that Michael Ende never came to appreciate this magical film that he helped give birth to for what it was.

I saw this movie in the theater when I was just 5 years old. And had the privilege of seeing it again in the theater for a special showing. I own it on Blu-ray. It is my all time favorite movie.

The Neverending Story will always be one of my most favorite childhood movies I have ever seen. It still gets me to this day and I’m 40. Still love it. No CGI, and still more real than some CGI movies today. I would love to see a reboot using today’s technology, but would it be as good as the original? That’s a good question.
This movie holds up so well, just rewatched it on netflix and i was blown away. I never realized how deep it was when i was a kid.

The film was awesome because today you can tell there was zero CGI
and thus, the effects were so much better by building real sets - when you see Noah Hathaway
going between the giant Sphinx you realize those are real 60 foot tall sculptures.
This is an epic. Moonchild is still cute. In the story there is this wonderful moment that I wish had made it into the film, where he wishes for the moment to last forever, and it does. Its so beautiful.
The horse scene killed me as a kid and it still makes me cry.
I remember the first time I saw the "Swamp of Sadness" scene when Artax, the horse, was sinking and Noah and Barrett were crying. I wanted to reach out to the screen and take them both into my arms to comfort them. I still get a huge lump in my throat when I see that scene.
when i went to see this in the theater for the 30th anniversary they showed this documentary before the movie started so it was great to see how each scene was filmed and brought to life. obviously being an equestrian myself seeing how the Welsh Pony was trained and the swamps of sadness was filmed was awesome!!
I was 9 when The Never-ending Story came out and I've watched it multiple times including just recently on Netflix. It'll never get old because it's such an uplifting & magical experience!

I loved this movie as a kid I was 6 years old when it came out and went to the drive in movies to watch it then I had the VHS of it and wore the tape out. It was great I loved the Luck Dragon he was so cute I wanted one after seeing that movie

I think this and Das Boot are the best German films ever made. Most of the people working on those two movies where the same, especially Doldinger with his amazing, amazing soundtracks. What a genius!

This shows why you cant make documentaries with many modern CGI-movies. "So, here you can see a bunch of people sitting at PCs" . Practical Effects will alway beat CGI. We, as humans can "feel" it.
I wished Barret Oliver and Noah Hathaway would also have been interviewed like Tami Stronach. I always had a crush for the latter, when watching the movie I was the same age.
By the way, if the Documentary is from 2014, she must have been 42 at the time of filming. Incredible, she looks better than most woman in her twenties. A natural beauty indeed and her acting as childlike empress was really perfect.
This movie is a masterpiece.
"Many things we just couldnt do" Well we are now in the world of Netflix. Make this closer to the book and make it a multi- season thing.

I'll admit, I saw the Movie first, which inspired me to read the Book, which really IS a Neverending story, it doesn't just stop where this movie ends. Truly IS a magical movie, it was produced at a time when the incredible digital effects we have today were not created yet, so they really had to think how to tell the story with what they had available at the time. The Actors really fit their roles, and told the story with strong emotions, and really dragged you into the tale. What a great movie, and for a while the Title score was my theme song for Life.
randallintx I saw the movie before the book too. My auntie got me the VHS around 1989, but I didn't see it till around 92 . I then saw the book at the book section in John Lewis's I think and the book really draws me in. I also liked the second movie as a kid, despite what people say about it. I have rewatched the second film as an adult and can see the flaws, but still think it has its good moments. The third film is just a disaster

If it weren't for the movie I might never have known about the book. It's funny how,as kids we never really paid attention to the true meaning of the story but as adults we can look back on it and see it in a totally different way.

I absolutely love this book. It’s full of magic and wisdom. Michael Ende created something really unique end everytime I read the book it really touches me.
I know that it may be a nice movie if you see it on its own, without a book. But to see it after having read the book…it just breaks my heart and I can feel Michael Endes heart break as well. I don’t mind scenes getting cut off or bad cgi or anything like that but this film didn’t understand at all the spirit and meaning of this book. Every scene I see captures a completely different feeling than the book was trying to give. I feel like the directors didn’t even read the book much less understand it. If they say, it wasn’t possible to realise the fantasy in a film, that’s just not true, they just had a lack of creativity. There are puppet shows that convey the story much more closely.
I am really sorry for all those poor people that saw this film bevor reading the book. You’ve been disseized of something really magical and beautiful.
While I will always have a lot of childhood sentiment attached to the film, I completely agree that it misses the mark as to the deeper meaning(s) of the novel. It also lacks the meta elements of the book (an example being that Bastian hears the Old Man of Wandering Mountain recite some passages that we readers have literally read in the opening chapter), which Ende clearly added to get the reader more involved in the story (as the book-within-the-book did with Bastian). And of course, Bastian chasing his bullies on Falkor's back is the worst possible substitute for the entire second half of the novel, which conveys the importance of the balance between, and symbiosis of, fantasy and reality.
i always LOVED this movie. I saw it when i was like 7 or so when it was aired on HBO, and i've loved it since then. I'm 36 now, and LOVE the book too

I don't think you could get Barret Oliver in any interview for any amount of money... unless it was about photography. He left acting totally without an explanation and is a very private person now.
Yep and i think Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) Left on bad terms with them. He was banned from the premier due to suing the company the same year. The reason why was because he was paid only for 3 months worth of work when they filmed for an additional 10 months. He was told that if he didn't drop the charges, which he didn't that he'd be disallowed to attend it.
It would have broken the magic to see them now as adults.

This came out when i was 5 and EVERYONE, including the teachers, were raving on about it at school all that year. We used to rollplay it at recess, i used to WISH i was the childlike empress (fyi she's from Iran, so cool) and marry Atreyu🤣. Seriously its bloody captivating. My favourite scene is when Atreyu firsts visits the Ivory tower. Just look at the coatumes in that scene. AMAZING. The other scene is the last one, where the bullies see him and run away. I just love it. The music, especially the scene where Atreyu runs past the sphinx, is really what makes this movie sensational. It will forever be my favourite childhood movie besides the Dark Crystal
Wow, such a great movie. I don't think they can do such things today when everything is CGI. There's a reason why Jurassic Park was filmed with animatronics for some scenes - you can feel the difference in the emotional connection between the characters and the creatures. But Tami was really great in this movie. A fantastic movie.
So wonderful, the whole team is incredible, much respect and admiration! I love watching these documentaries, after watching The Dark Cristal series on Netflix the fever is back again, I wanna watch all behind the scenes, buy all books, collectibles, lol! This is one of the most important films in my life, I still love it! You can tell Wolfgang is such a sweet soul and that is definitely imprinted in the movie

The concept behind the movie is incredible.
I saw the german version in Cinema as a kid. From that moment is one of my all time favorites.
I'm still not convinced that the horse wasn't stressed out with that scene.. and I am pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed to happen today.
As much as I loved the film, that scene always haunted me and as I grew up, I was sure that the horse would not have been happy in that situation, no matter how 'used to it' it became.
Watched this yesterday and enjoyed. Tami looked amazing, and still is tbh. I think it would now be 34 years since. So hard to believe.
My family LOVES THIS MOVIE!!! My son grew up on this movie and just a few days ago..my son introduced this magical movie to his 6 year old daughter…she just adored it!!! Yes magical imaginative minds are what’s truly missing today with kids…this is a big hit in our family…thank goodness the movie was made thank you! The song is one of my all time favorites …

But there is indeed a huge difference between people born in the late 70's and the early 80's. I know because I was born in 79. The kids 3-5 years later were soft asf. And now they're raising kids... @@jonathanspencer5884 Hard to say. The Baby Boomers were soft asf too... the hippies of the 60's. Their parents, the ones who fought in WWII had it rough and created better times. Unfortunately I think those better times soften people. The US economy was in bad shape in the 70's to about 81. Even if a kid from the late 70's was too young to know what was going on they still lived through it and absorbed it to some regard. Then the economy boomed like crazy within a short span. And really has been strong since for the most part.
Social media has really contributed yeah. But more than that parents who can't even discipline their own children anymore from fear of having social services called on them. Liberal policies have softened our society. When I was in elementary school the principal could beat you with a paddle. They did away with that a few years later. Now these kids can walk all over you. Yep, 82-84 seems about right for this millennial group. Especially 84 on.
This was one of my all time favorite films as a kid I loved it soooo much 💗and TBH still do ,the whole movie was perfect in everyway possible and still is Al these years later and when was kid remember having crush on atrayu 💗lol great big thumbs up to everyone involved in this fantastic film I say they should be all very proud of their selves and all there hard work payed off 😍💛👍

I first saw this movie on TV when I was twelve years old (in 1995).
I got a huge crush on Atreyu. I fell in love with the whole movie too :).
Don't let the nothing ruin the children's minds and hearts.the "Nothing" means in my opinion when children stop imagining. So Let children Imagine and be creative
This movie is 100x better than todays efforts because it dealt with intense issues like sadness, fear, terror, courage, loneliness and more. Movies these days are not bold or brave enough to take us on a Journey that tests our every emotion and awakens our every sense before giving us a finale of hope and triumph.
The movie would not have been what it was without the perfect casting of the three leads, and the stellar performances they delivered. They were all empowered, but vulnerable as well. It pleases me that while none of them remained actors, they didn't have any of the issues child stars often do.
It saddens me that Michael Ende never came to appreciate this magical film that he helped give birth to for what it was.
