Once upon a time I was invited by Mr. Patina to grab a cold one, and as a friend I of course brought a gift. I came by with two mostly identical metal shears in pretty bad condition. So obviously I asked him to do a competition, an offer he couldn’t refuse?
So I took this metal shear apart, cleaned off the dirt from the past 300 years and gave it a good clean. Some of the old grease just came off by scraping. After that I put every part in my sandblasting cabinet and did a lot of metal works afterwards: filing, shaping, sanding, and so on. When the metal work was done, I powder coated the main part in a mix of “antique hammer effects silver” and "RAL 5012 Lichtblau".
The blades were reshaped with a belt grinder, while sanding, I cooled down the blades in water to keep the hardness.
I zinc plated every screw after truning the heads and cutting the thread.
Parts that are moving against each other where cold blued. I also took care of the Mubea Brand Logo and recreated the sticker, which is providing information on cutting limits.
The final test shows, that this shear works perfectly again. I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - iÂŽll try to answer as soon as possible! @@NTRprojects I'm glad you both agree. Wt's whhat makes your two channels special to me is how you both propose quality craftsmanship, respect for the piece you are restoring,, a friendly environment and your two distinct ways though do show through every time.
That was why I had suggested ending you both an identical item to restore. You could use your creativity and preferred future uses to show two different, yet equally worthwhile results. Since it's a contest and we are the judges, I have created categories by which each restoration is to be judged. The categories are Disassembly, Cleaning and Rust Removal, Hardware and Casting Improvement, Paint Preparation, Painting, Originality, Re-assembly, and Operation. Each category has a scale of 1-5 (1 is lowest score, 5 is highest score) for a possible total of 40 points.
    Disassembly - 5
Cleaning and Rust Removal - 5
Hardware and Casting Improvement - 5
    Paint Preparation - 5
Painting - 3 (The pin striping was thin and uneven)
Originality - 5 (does not include the new mounting base)
    Re-assembly - 5
    Operation - 5
    TOTAL = 38
Your restoration turned out beautifully! You went above and beyond by paying careful attention to the details. I feel that the paint you chose to use was as close to the original as possible. Very nicely done.

Having watched both videos I'm giving my vote to you, Dr. Beer. The shears were similar but not identical. I feel you got the more difficult shear to restore. You both did good restorations of the shears. However you made two mounts, one for mounting on a work table and the wooden mount, which was excellent. You also made a very nice wooden handle. Mr. Patina didn't make mounts or a handle. You did pin striping on the body, which matched the pin striping on the original. Plus, of course, you evaluated a beer.

Both are outstanding! The two machines are not exactly the same. The end result function is the essential thing. For function, Dr. Beer hand sanded the blades, removing less metal, and did not use shims. Was that a difference in the blades, one set more worn than the other?? Both cut metal as required. For paint, Dr. Beer wins, for more thought, and I happen to love that look and color. For the base and handle ... WOW! And interchangeable two bases are better than one. (The parts about nickel plating bolts, then turning, confused me. Mr. Patina was less complicated, but the video progress was clearer.) In this competition, Dr. Beer! But what about the next one?? Different skills?? Who will win that??

@@NTRprojects --- Yes, at 7:46 the red chapter heading say "Zinc Plating" (and "Chapter 3"). I thought, "Oh, OK, those are zinc plated parts". That's just my bad, being so used to consumer items in stores, advertising campaigns, and so forth. People who know nothing about engines will buy a car for the upholstery and the paint color. I have not ever seen freshly sand blasted parts in real life, nor freshly zinc plated parts. "First I sandblasted the parts as well" clarifies it. P.S. You guys didn't have "Who buys the beer" bet on this, did you??
Edit added: "Chapter 3: Preparations for Zinc Plating" (or, "Sandblasting"), then at 10:35 "Ready for Zinc Plating", would have been unmistakable, but most apparently understood it the way you presented it.

For me you are the winner. The metallic paint and stripe matched the original, the base and handle were an incredible addition to what would be expected as a standard. Superb.

Off to watch Mr Patina's video, but you've set a high bar with your one! One of things I love about these kinds of restorations is the reuse of things in a "disposable" age, and the upcycling of the wood was an excellent example of this.

You’re just showing off! I’m surprised you didn’t carve a groove and inlay gold instead of the yellow pinstripeđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł
    Beautiful job!

Thanks so much. I enjoyed both restorations. It’s interesting to see how differently you both approach the same task. Lovely result at the end. The base and handle are quite special and add a finesse to the over all finish.

This was a great idea! Friend amongst friend having fun doing what they love. This has to be one the toughest decisions I've had to make in a while. Mr. Patina was definitely up to challenge though with his magic tricks (snapping fingers and prep work magically being done!)... But beer... And wood workery was an equally impressive touch! I have voted, but my hat is tipped to the both of you! Well played, fellas! đŸ„‚

Most excellent! You both did amazing jobs. Sorry, but I have to give it to Mister Patina. I feel he stayed truer to "restoration" without additions or modifications.

Both video are excellent, Dear Sirs thank you a lot for your art!
Nevertheless in my opinion, Dr Beer's project was more structured and more technologies have been applied.
Hope we will have the opportunity to enjoy your new projects.

One more Tool saved. I like this renovation but i LOVE the woodworking. The idea using the scrapwood is just awsome. And of course seeing the Festo-Saw in Action was a nice plus.
