I saw the Outlaws concert in Albuquerque in the early 80s. As long as someone wanted to listen, Willie was going to play. A genuine troubadour....what a generous man!
To me Willie Nelson's guitar playing is orchestral. It's like a string or horn arrangement that moves so beautifully through the changers. Truely a master of song.
I know I have posted prior, but does ANYONE realize the talent of this man? Unique voice and style, writes his own, great guitarist and will porbebly be leaving us from this world soon.
He once wrote great songs, the earliest of them recorded first by others and then himself, while also recording songs written by others. There are few equals to Willie when he was at his songwriting prime in the late fifties through seventies. But he hasn't written a heck of a whole lot of consequence since the first half of the 1980s, when he wrote 'On the Road Again' at the request of the producer of the movie "Honeysuckle Rose" which starred Willie Nelson, 'Half A Man' in 1983, and Forgiving You Was Easy 1984. 'Me and Paul' wasn't recorded until 1984 and released in 1985, but it was written in the early 1970s. Though he has continued to make some incredible records, most of the songs that have carried them were either written by others or written by Nelson prior to about 1980. The most notable exception I can think of is 1993's 'Still Is Still Moving Me'. From 1994 until 2014 Willie didn't record any original self-penned albums at all, and from 2014 on everything original has been co-written with producer Buddy Cannon getting first billing in the credits. In the end, the singular song that one must always go back to when considering how Willie Hugh Nelson became "Willie" is 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain'. It was written by Fred Rose in the 1940s. It was recorded by Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Ferlin Husky, Slim Whitman, Gene Vincent, Whispering Bill Anderson, Hank Snow, and Conway Twitty in the 30 years before Willie got around to recording it. After "Red Headed Stranger", everyone forgot about all of those other versions. That's what makes Willie Nelson who he most is.
Michael Clark When artists are evaluated, it has been said, their creative years are when they are in their 20’s and 30’s. That’s okay. Willie epitomizes a musician who has spent a lifetime reaching and growing into their craft. His 1962 version is solid, but it pales in comparison to the incredible depth his voice has here and the harmonic adventuring in his fearless improvisation.
Yeah, well said. I think he created a really interesting dichotomy between himself and the band in this version. The way he drags his tempo, doing all kinds of wild, jazzy improv stuff with his left hand and still manages to hit all the key strokes and notes is really brilliant. And the guy just makes it sound so damn effortless... I also really love his choice of instrument here; He's playing an old, beat-up guitar that actually _sounds_ like an old, beat-up guitar. It adds a whole lot of character to an already great tune, and it really fits perfectly with the sentimental character of the song.

Came across this version a few years ago now, and although not a fan of country when i really need to listen to the pinacle of quality this is my first port of call listening to the sublime Willie Nelson.
One of the finest guitar accompaniments I've ever heard. His mastery of the guitar is so under-appreciated due to his songwriting, voice, and style. It seems he's improvising and making it up on the fly as he's going along too. Listen to the rhythmical changes and soulful, jazzy, and in some places even flamenco-ish instrumental riffs during his solos. Brings tears to my eyes. Just look at the faces of his peers as they listen to his fingers skate over that fretboard.
+Larry A. right on. i've been watching this video for months. it has made me get the guitar out and try to get the changes right. you hit the nail on the head. his buddies are meditating, chanting and almost crying at points. there are some cool diminished runs in there i got to figure out. he's the real deal.
+Larry A. Absolutely, he has such a great touch...give me a soulful Willie Nelson over a John Mclaughlin or Tommy Emmanuel any day. Such a great performance
Wow....Willie is a one-of-a-kind artist...just love his singing and playing style, more of a jazz singers phrasing and vocal timing, unlike anyone else in the country world God bless him. Looking forward to the new album coming out this month.
Remember this song Mary. Married 32 years now and I'm not all that anymore as you remind me daily but lord knows, neither are you. Just wish I was able to sing and play the guitar to communicate it this lovingly.
I can never get over this. It only gets better as time goes on. It's the way he plays it with such ease like he's just chillin by himself even though he's on literally the biggest stage possible.
Willie and trigger must continue to ride until they dont want to ride no more. Since I was 13 years old Willie has been there for me and Im few decades past 13 now. God bless Willie and thanks so much.
+baler johnson Agreed! Willie and Trigger are the deepest loves of my life... (aside from my other deep loves), but I have such a love for Willie Nelson - I can't hear enough of that beautiful voice and those incredible lyrics. This man feels very deeply. He is very much appreciated!
I’m not into ranking great live performances, saying that one is better than the other. But let’s just say there’s a group of 50 of the world’s greatest, all genres, all time. This one is in there, IMO.
Now that is perfection for a live performance. Willie wrote it. I love his 1960’s version. This has over thirty years ripening. Willie playing Trigger, lovely solos, Willie’s voice = impeccable phrasing. And, the backup musicians: percussion, pedal steel, fiddle, all toned it down to simply and quietly play the chord outline. Absolutely lovely!
I feel the same was. I cannot stop playing this song and listening to every version, by every artist I can find. This version is perfection in every way. Willie is in a zone during this performance, that few will ever experience, save for absorbing every aspect of this performance, over and over.
Forget the song, watch Kris's face. :) Priceless. His face expressions truly indicate he is a song writer. He plans and feels this stuff. The brows waiting for the hook, his approval of the chorus, his relief at the end, it's done.

...well said ....hard to label Willie "
Z, is that you?
Willie created his own distinct style and more importantly created his own genre of music! Gotta love Willie! :)
Long time Willie fan. Loved your comment!
This is one of those perfectly timeless songs that ages like fine wine.
Willie looks like he just got done mowing the grass, smoked some grass, and showed up
Is there anyone else alive who is as cool as Willie Nelson?
Jeremy McNeill mmmmmmmmm, maybe Keith Richards.......lol...
no
I agree. No
+Jeremy McNeill Not since Steve McQueen and James Garner died.
+Jeremy McNeill NOPE
Willie transcends boundaries and classification. Just a all around great writer, singer, musician and good guy.
+MrAzrancher and pretty cool to get high with I bet just ask Toby Keith LOL
+growlingbehemoth GREAT!!
MrAzrancher L
Willie Nelson is one of the last old time singers we have left, I just found out he started writing songs at the age of eight!! I did hear he's not doing well and our hearts and prayers are with you, please get well soon!! We all love you!!💜😇🐎
Toby Keith?? Look what he did to Kris Kristofferson , before playing and singing like this..Willie is a fucking Jedi!!!
The saddest songs are always the best ones 😩 great job by a great man ! 👍🇺🇸
His guitar play is smooth as butter
I'm 70 y.o. and this hits me right square in the feels...
I have aids
Willie just plays the guitar beautifully
Could listen to Willie all day ❤
Came across this version a few years ago now, and although not a fan of country when i really need to listen to the pinacle of quality this is my first port of call listening to the sublime Willie Nelson.
Amen. Well said!
+Larry A. right on. i've been watching this video for months. it has made me get the guitar out and try to get the changes right. you hit the nail on the head. his buddies are meditating, chanting and almost crying at points. there are some cool diminished runs in there i got to figure out. he's the real deal.
+Larry A. Absolutely, he has such a great touch...give me a soulful Willie Nelson over a John Mclaughlin or Tommy Emmanuel any day. Such a great performance
+Larry A. I think his guitar is a Martin, it sounds great, but is has seen it's share of use!
+Larry A. He is a national treasure!
I have been drinking for a while i love this song thank god for good memories
Wow....Willie is a one-of-a-kind artist...just love his singing and playing style, more of a jazz singers phrasing and vocal timing, unlike anyone else in the country world God bless him. Looking forward to the new album coming out this month.
yes his off time or half time vocals And guitar playing behind and ahead of the melody is Willie. Genius.
@jwray9946 couldn't agree more. No one quite the same.
Love that smile at the end of that song
Willie Nelson at his best. Wow!!! I love it!
That brought tears to my eyes. Willie is unique.
Remember this song Mary. Married 32 years now and I'm not all that anymore as you remind me daily but lord knows, neither are you. Just wish I was able to sing and play the guitar to communicate it this lovingly.
Other legends in awe of Willie's voice/playing/songwriting
Best version of this song. Gets me teary every time... ain’t it funny..
Sweet Hannah 🌹
Yes me too! I come back to it at least twice a year lol.
because it's just so beautiful, it hurts a little.
Not in a bad way, but it still hurts.
Yes it reaches into places into the heart and soul . A great guitarist, vocalist and performer ❤️
Joe HInton made a fantastic soul r&b version that was very popular in 1964. Check it out. See what Willie can inspire.
Genius. Such a difficult song to sing and play. Most don’t realise how complex this is 🙆🏻♂️
Willie was asked once "Why do you think your music is so popular?" His reply was "Because 98 percent of lovers are not with their first choice".
I'm a keep going back to this performance here on youtube... And starting to love it more and more!!!!
Staring up at the sky as the clouds wisk by... listening to Willie Nelson... Oh how time just slips away..........
Ain’t nothing like Trigger and Willie
I can never get over this. It only gets better as time goes on. It's the way he plays it with such ease like he's just chillin by himself even though he's on literally the biggest stage possible.
aint it funny how 64 year old fingers (at the time of recording) can keep us in awe...
every guy on that stage marvels at how his mind puts together those notes. a language of genius and beauty
The greatest singer that ever lived.❤
Stunning version of a classic country song!
+baler johnson been seven decades for me..........we became fans at the same age. Amen!
+Ivy Carpenter almost six for me... amen again to that
I’m not into ranking great live performances, saying that one is better than the other. But let’s just say there’s a group of 50 of the world’s greatest, all genres, all time. This one is in there, IMO.
Dear Willie , thank you so much for all your beautiful music!!
Just seen this. (2023) His phrasing is odd, in that he seems to slip in and out of the bars/beat, but oh so effective.
Sitting outside, light rain....reminds me of days gone by
It's so heavy watching all of those people on stage just letting those lyrics sink in.
You know you're good when your peers are blinking back tears.
Willie is a national treasure.
1997. Not a phone in hand. Just watching for then and them to remember
His guitar work is exquisite.
rubbersole see him throw in a few 9th chords
Indeed it is! The old lone ranger still has his long-time trusty pal, Trigger!
I genuinely can't stop playing this, it is so fantastic. What a talent and what a song. The sound he gets out of Trigger would put Clapton to shame.
I don't think we appreciate word's until we get older . it's funny now time silps away.
Not shame just different style. Both Masters of their instruments!
I feel the same was. I cannot stop playing this song and listening to every version, by every artist I can find. This version is perfection in every way. Willie is in a zone during this performance, that few will ever experience, save for absorbing every aspect of this performance, over and over.
Can you see the love, understanding, respect and joy on the faces of all those other hero's there.
I believe Willie started as a studio guitarist. He is immensely talented.
Love willys guitar work❤❤❤ very talented man
Chris version makes me sad l could cry love it l am 82 but GREAT music
His best song in my opinion. This song can get any man through any slump.
In Hindsight , His timeing , is impecable ! ... YES SIR!
🤩🎂🎈🎉 Happy Birthday Willie🎶💞
Great song. Great musician.
Hey how are you doing..?😊
Total mastery of an instrument.
If there ever was a one of a kind your looking at it. Because they’re sure want never be another Willie.
Love Willie's style of playing, he throws a Spanish sound into the licks he plays, he's an amazing guitarist
Forget the song, watch Kris's face. :) Priceless. His face expressions truly indicate he is a song writer. He plans and feels this stuff. The brows waiting for the hook, his approval of the chorus, his relief at the end, it's done.
Top notch performance.
Crazy how many in this video is gone and Willie is still rolling along and smoking good weed. Wonderful Pearson if you are ever lucky to meet!!
This is the definition of" real and authentic music"
