And then there's Chet Atkins, sitting politely, and quietly thinking, " childs play.". (He could play that at 10 years old, with his hands tied behind his back.) But I still like Glenn.

I sure do miss him. I fell in love with his music at 14. I remember listening to the DJ and he started making fun of him over the radio. He kept calling him Glen Cowbell. I was so angry that I called the station and chewed out the DJ. He didn't stop. Oh well, I was 16 and in love. I'm 68 now and still love his music. RIP Mr. Campbell!
I will tell you that even as good and successful as Glen was believe me, he was intimidated by the fact he was on camera and in front of his peers. There was one missed note and he got through it but you could see it on his face for 1 second. A true professional!
One of the things that drew me to Country music - skill. But the talent is used so well, to serve the song. Roy, Chet and Glenn can do it all on guitar, but they are also all about creating a great song, a great piece of music. As are the rest on the stage.
Most of the younger generation singers can't really sing nor play any musical instruments well. Those were the days.... Guess we'll never see them again.

If I remember correctly, while he was a studio musician many headliners encouraged him to record his own music. That he had way too much talent to be in the background.

I sat down at my computer when I heard of his passing and went through all the songs Glen sang ........ brought back sooooo many memories from my childhood. Watching this today made me miss my mom and dad so much I just cried. Isn't it amazing what music does to our memories and soul? May you rest in eternal peace Glen Campbell. I've probably watched this clip hundreds of times over the years. It pops up in my recommended videos every couple of weeks, and I always watch it when that happens. Without fail, each time Campbell gets to the end of his solo I'm just as elated as everyone in that room were. I love his smile at 1:56 just as he's finishing it. It looks like he's thinking "Damn, I'm good." And he was. Sheer brilliance on display.
Same here, buddy. There’s an excellent analysis and breakdown of the solo on the WingsofPegasus CZcams site. He talks of Glen’s ability to hit every note with his right hand when playing up-tempo pieces on acoustic, which is incredibly hard to do, but which Glen does effortlessly. It makes every note emphatic. His dexterity is amazing, but really amazes me is that he couldn’t read music and played strictly ear. Wow.
The Wings of Pegasus video was very good. I had no idea he couldn't read music. That makes it so much more impressive. Makes me want to learn how to play an instrument... I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually. Fingers crossed! Imagine if you could become even a tenth as good as Campbell. I wouldn't do anything else but play music all day until I shuffle off this mortal coil.
A pure talent and humble gentleman to all, our world is a lesser place without artists like Glen and Roy walking it. Glen may be gone, but never forgotten by anyone who has heard his wonderful music.

My takeaway was that fellow great guitarist, Roy Clark, who has intermittently played with Glen Campbell over the years, was being a good sport but was all the while wishing he would have been part of this performance too. However, you could be right!

There will never be another Glen Campbell. Most talented musician ever. He could play and sing anything. Most people don’t know that he once filled in for Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys on tour when he was sick. Unbelievable!
Glen Campbell was the real deal. A real country boy. Grew up the son of a sharecropper in Arkansas picking cotton and working hard on the farm. He said he was inspired when he was young by the guitar playing of Django Reinhardt. I'm deeply amazed by Glen Campbell.
When Glen Campbell starts his brilliant solo, surrounded by all the GREATEST legends of Country Music, every single ONE OF THEM is absolutely DAZZLED..... (especially the guitar players.) He will live FOREVER as one of the greatest guitarists of ALL TIME.
I love Country music and all the fabulous artists who sing and perform for us. I'm not an American citizen, but when I listen to these beautiful songs, it's the way I see America: love, friendship and freedom. A wonderful, country. I also just turned 72 last month. Most people remember Glen for his singing and his TV show. However, he was one of the most talented studio musicians to ever play the musicial scene. The top guitarists (i.e. Roy Clark) could only smile and nod approvingly when Glen played. Even in his later years, even though he could no longer remember the words, he was still able to play the songs. His fingers still remembered the notes. That is a tribute to how great a guitarist Glen was!
I am just saying but this level of talent is unheard of today in pop culture, this is off the cuff stuff done in front of a live audience. No auto tune, no post production, just a man with a great voice and his guitar. I wish that we had this again today

I never thought of Glenn Campbell as country because I lived in Chicago and he was more of a cross over entertainer and was played on pop music stations.
I think country music is one type of music that has a lot of bad cheesy stuff but dig deeper and you find the really great stuff, glen campbell is one of the latter
I am sure you have heard him in plenty of songs and did not know it. He was a sought after studio musician. I met him once, he acted like an ass. But i knew even then, WE all have our down days. I spilled tomato juice on his white jacket just 4 minutes before he was to go on stage at a small venue. He quickly recovered from his angry laser stare at me and said; Is that my water? thanks kid. mmm did i say he acted like an ass? I meant , I did. I did not even say I was sorry. sorry Mr. Campbell up there , I was just a star struck schmuck.
I just came back to watch this clip for the umpteenth time, and it made me grin from ear to ear this time as it has on every other occasion in the past. I stand In Awe of Glen Campbell's Talent, and I'm always tickled pink to watch these greats of music tapping their feet and smiling as Glen plays one of his signature songs and comes forth with an amazing guitar break. What an amazing talent he had, and how wonderful that his peers and contemporaries feel exactly the same way.
Glen doesn't even look like he's trying when he plays guitar. He's seriously have a conversation during his solo and it's like his fingers have a mind of their own. Phenomenal.

to carry a melody all the way through an ass kicking masterful lead bit is as hard as it gets. It’s one thing to play 1000 notes soon forgotten. It’s another thing to tear into it and pull the melody along with you. He was an absolute genius on guitar. Chet Atkins, Roy Clark were floored by him, and who wouldn’t be wow!BRAVO.

His uncle taught him to play guitar and the rest was sheer talent and honed on practice. God, what a story. Left home @ 14, and the rest is history. Doesn't happen much. God bless Glen.
Yes, I can believe that. He’s from a musical family and played since he was a boy. Childhood is the best time to learn a musical instrument. The relationship between a child’s brain and training the connections in the young nervous system make it the perfect time to learn. It all becomes so ingrained in a way that is very difficult - perhaps impossible - to achieve as an adult. Of course he was talented on top of it!
Watching all those great country music stars looking at Glen Campbell perform that song, and seeing their faces basically saying “this dang guy is the most talented person here tonight” was incredibly satisfying!!!
In September of 1967, I sat with Glen and his band in an all-night coffee shop till 5:30 AM telling stories and jokes. He was easy to be around, relaxed and friendly. I'll also mention that my radio station back then (KMOR in SLC, UT) was among the very first to play "Gentle On My Mind" when the John Hartford version came out in May of '67. Glen's release was in August and we had it on the air the day we got our copy.

Dear Sir, thanks for the nice post and remarks. I first got to meet Glen in 1961 !!!! He was a session guitarist and vocalist. My Mom, Dad and Brother and I were coming back to San Jose, CA from South Dakota. We stopped into "Billie Jean's Hair & Nail Salon" in Albuq., NM There was a guy sitting in the back corner just playing his butt off on his guitar. My Dad said, this young man is great. I went over and introduced myself and family. He told me in the summer of 1961 - he wanted to be a professional singer. Years later in 1964, after I had meant the Righteous Brothers, Hal Blaine and The Wrecking Crew - which Glen was a member of , did I get the total picture. He got paid $35.00 a day to play guitar on albums of very famous people. Everyone at Gold Coast studios, starting with Sonny & Cher knew he'd be a BIG star, and he became one. I saw him in concert at least 50-60+ times, just like I did with The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. You can imagine that I never had to buy a ticket after about 1966 - it was all "on the house." I saw Glen go thru his ups and downs - as did with others. I loved Bobby Hatfield (1940-2003). I collect celebrity autographs thus, after you ask say, Neil Diamond, 25-40 times to sign an autograph they sorta remember you and you form a "fan /celebrity" relationship." Glen and The Righteous Bros - were my all-time favorites. I also got to meet Jimmy Layne Webb at least 20+ times and the list goes on. He is literally God's gift to my generation as one of the greatest singer-songwriter-composers - just look him up and see of of the GREAT songs he wrote. He was NEVER too busy to talk to any fan or sign autographs, pose for pictures, he was just such a fine Christian gentleman. Thanks again and I hope I didn't bore you. I could write a book about my collecting adventures and the "friendships" that I made while collecting. Not all celebrities are nice to the fans - TRUST ME.... SOME PEOPLE THE PUBLIC WORSHIP'S ARE SO RUDE AND MEAN YOU NEVER GUESS IT WHEN YOU WATCH THEM ON TV OR IN A FILM. BUT I WON'T GO THERE AND PUBLISH THEIR NAMES. MOST celebrities, IF approached the right way - will sign autographs pose for pictures. All of my old autograph friends - where we'd go out collecting together - at night - gosh we'd start 5:00 PM and end up staying out until 6:00 AM. Picked up Frank Sinatra one night after waiting 10 hours. He was such a nice gentleman - it was his bodyguards, just doing their jobs, trying to keep us away from him - when he would actually tell them to back off and let him sign. He'd see us when he went into have dinner and then their late night poker game. Then more partying - but when he walked outta the club/restaurant - he immediately remember the faces that had been standing in the cold for 10 hours for one autograph and he would ALWAYS sign. I will say this Danny Thomas and James Garner were two of kindness celebrities I've ever gotten to know. They just loved the fans. Mr and Mrs. Ronald Reagan long before his was the President of the United States and Nancy was first lady - they were such classy people to the very end. It didn't get any better than them. President Reagan, even after he got outta office would sign autographs and just talk to us fans about sports ... it was great. He had a GREAT lsugh that I can still hear to this day. My God, at this time I was just a baby. In 1967 I was maybe 16 years old. I heard Glen on the radio and watched him on TV. I didn't know anything about bars and bands till much later when I played music for a living. This was a whole different breed of musicians and artists, great guitar solo, live, off the top of his head. It was just such an inspiring time. It must have been incredible for you to be in that business, at that particular time. Most people now know nothing in the real world of those whom paved the way. You got to be part of that.
I loved how just a second or so before Glen finishes his solo, the crowd knows that it's ending and they all start to give him a big round of applause! Everyone's souls were one at that moment.
I'm not a country and western fan generally, but his voice, guitar playing and the heart and soul he put in his performances just blows me away. A sad loss to the world....
glen was certified cross-over. so were several of the other faces in this circle. most of them started out as "country" but they didn't limit themselves to it. and others they played with could also play whatever styles suited them.
Chet established the CGP title which was an invitation of distinction before his condition prevented him from playing. There were only 5 players ever invited into the CGP (Certified Guitar Player), Glen Campbell, Steve Wariner, John Knowles, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, and Paul Yandell was invited after Chet's death. I think Roy should have also been invited, but then see the level you had to be at to make there. Glen was amazing.
What a legend...! The killer part was that he made that incredible guitar break seem easy, like he was barely trying. That's how you know how great he was!

It's been an incredibly rewarding three months getting familiar with his music - his virtuosity and flawless balance between his picking and that soaring, versatile tenor.
+eight inches He was not "underrated" at all. Prior to making it big in his solo career he was the most in demand session guitar player in LA. He played on hundreds of albums for a wide variety of musicians, mostly uncredited. He was an amazing guitar player. Even in "I'll Be Me" when he is struggling with the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's he could still play amazing guitar solos, seemingly by instinct.
Don't forget to mention his voice too John, that and him being such a fine man. I'm from England and not of the Glen Campbell generation or background but I know what a beautiful thing the man's music will remain.
I too feel sad about his departure, but through the technology we have created in this world, allows him still, to share his gift with us, and I really appreciate that as no matter how I feel, I feel a bit better after listening to this song. The effect is immediate and no drugs were required -that is the power of great music!
and he passed that to his children. i think of ashely the most who helped her dad while he had memory issues called Alzheimer's on glens farewell tour. that also goes for glens last love his life and the rest of glens last family. he is a lucky dog to have that support an i love his rhinestone cowboy. and in that thought look at michael martin murphy song about cowboy logic . you have 3 cowboys in the front of a bench seat pickup truck which is you best guess of a true cowboy. its the one in the middle. he does not drive and he doesn't have to open the gate especially during inclement weather.
The '60s were busy, as were the '70s , busy and busy. Here we are in 2021 and I finally discover Glen Campbell. In 1971 I dropped out of High School. 50 years later things slow down enough to catch up.
@@tim59ism look up all the records that Glen performed on, from river deep mountain high, strangers in the night, Johnny Angel, good vibrations and all of The Beach Boys early recordings. Glen was first call guitarist for most recordings in the wrecking crew back in the day.

Once in a great while you’ll catch a live video that shows how a great performer separates himself from other greats. This is that video for me with Glen Campbell. The great Roy Clark’s face speaks volumes.
Right out of high school I was fortunate enough to get a job at Gold Star Recording Studios. They weren't called the Wrecking Crew at the time, but I got to see Glen, Carol Kaye, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Larry Knechtel, and the rest of them nearly every day. I NEVER saw Glen play a bad note, nor did Carol. They were beyond amazing as clearly demonstrated by Glen's solo here. There were many many times Glen played his solos live on the tracking session. Over dubs? Why? Not when he had this kind of talent. You see; way back before Pro Tools, there were pros. I was fortunate beyond belief to have had those experiences... RIP Glen.
What a special job you had! To have been around that much talent every day must have been awesome. You know, it would spoil most people to the extent that they could not listen to average pro players anymore. I envy you immensely, but I thank you for sharing your experience and letting people know about these folks.

@@liannebedard5521 Yes! Every week I would stop in and ask to see Dave Gold. I was 19. Did you know Cher was a receptionist at Gold Star studios? Anyway, this went on for about five weeks…I kept showing up. And finally he said; “you really want to work here dont you!” Yes sir Mr Gold! Then he hired me right there on the spot - to take a dolly out back and unload a ton of new recording tape and office supplies! HAHA!!! But… I WAS IN the recording business!!! I was so excited I was always there before Dave opened up and I clocked out at 5:30 PM, but usually stayed ‘til midnight because I could help out on the night sessions (but no pay). Buffalo Springfield did a lot of night sessions… And nowadays kids have to pay $30 grand or more for classes at Full Sail and such. I was incredibly fortunate. I should probably do a podcast - so many stories from the old days…. Cheers!
Like so many others on here, I've watched this dozens of times; it never gets old. I especially like watching the drummer -- he's definitely into it, along with everyone else.

I grew up in a Barrio in the southwest in the 60-70s and remember watching the Glen Campbell show on TV alongside my grandmother. His music transcends the cultural fabric of this country. My eyes well up for Mr. Glenn Campbell and his greatest hits every time I hear them.
Well, I’ve lost count long ago how many times I’ve watched this ❤️ this is just a masterpiece / magical time with so many legends- the rings, but so many amazing memories. I’m so grateful that my father introduced me to so many genres of music, but particularly having grown up in the south, these classic legendary country musicians/artists.
Roy Clark looks like a kid in the presence of one of his all time super-heroes. Watching Waylon break out in a huge smile as he ran that progression says it all.
I’m a die hard rapper and I will chase that dream till I die but this is one of the most wholesome and beautiful performances I’ve ever seen. Makes me wish I was a simpler man. Glen Campbell was a wonderful and talented character and it’s a shame I’ll never meet the him. Rest In Peace Glen. ❤️🤠
He was one of the best guitar players ever. A lot of people overlooked his talent. When you have the people like Chet Atkins Roy Clark looking at you in admiration as you play says a lot.
He was an incredible talent, much more so than so many 'artists' nowadays. Too bad he had so many demons but then again, so many creative, talented people seem to have them. It's almost as if they go hand in hand.

Even when you're one of the best, there's a lot of pressure when playing in front of your peers. He made it through that solo and was happy it went well and so are his friends! I've been a Glen Campbell fan since he had his variety show on TV about a million years ago. We lost one of the good ones...

Imagine being in a room full of the absolute best musicians and singers in the world and making all their jaws drop with how good you are, without even breaking a sweat. That's Glen Campbell in a nutshell.

I sure do miss him. I fell in love with his music at 14. I remember listening to the DJ and he started making fun of him over the radio. He kept calling him Glen Cowbell. I was so angry that I called the station and chewed out the DJ. He didn't stop. Oh well, I was 16 and in love. I'm 68 now and still love his music. RIP Mr. Campbell!

I will tell you that even as good and successful as Glen was believe me, he was intimidated by the fact he was on camera and in front of his peers. There was one missed note and he got through it but you could see it on his face for 1 second. A true professional!

One of the things that drew me to Country music - skill. But the talent is used so well, to serve the song. Roy, Chet and Glenn can do it all on guitar, but they are also all about creating a great song, a great piece of music. As are the rest on the stage.
As a professional musician in a completely different genre, I can feel the love in this room. This is a special moment in time.

When i was a kid i didnt realize what a talent he was.
His talents were rarely showcased in the studio. I saw him live and it melted my face.
A lot of people know how great he was. He had a long career and was considered one of the best studio musicians ever.
If I remember correctly, while he was a studio musician many headliners encouraged him to record his own music. That he had way too much talent to be in the background.
I an old man who cannot keep from weeping at his passing. Thank you, Lord, for sharing his talents with us. Please embrace him as he goes home.

I sat down at my computer when I heard of his passing and went through all the songs Glen sang ........ brought back sooooo many memories from my childhood. Watching this today made me miss my mom and dad so much I just cried.

I've probably watched this clip hundreds of times over the years. It pops up in my recommended videos every couple of weeks, and I always watch it when that happens. Without fail, each time Campbell gets to the end of his solo I'm just as elated as everyone in that room were. I love his smile at 1:56 just as he's finishing it. It looks like he's thinking "Damn, I'm good." And he was. Sheer brilliance on display.
Same here, buddy. There’s an excellent analysis and breakdown of the solo on the WingsofPegasus CZcams site. He talks of Glen’s ability to hit every note with his right hand when playing up-tempo pieces on acoustic, which is incredibly hard to do, but which Glen does effortlessly. It makes every note emphatic. His dexterity is amazing, but really amazes me is that he couldn’t read music and played strictly ear. Wow.
The Wings of Pegasus video was very good. I had no idea he couldn't read music. That makes it so much more impressive. Makes me want to learn how to play an instrument... I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually. Fingers crossed! Imagine if you could become even a tenth as good as Campbell. I wouldn't do anything else but play music all day until I shuffle off this mortal coil.

My takeaway was that fellow great guitarist, Roy Clark, who has intermittently played with Glen Campbell over the years, was being a good sport but was all the while wishing he would have been part of this performance too. However, you could be right!

Glen Campbell was the real deal. A real country boy. Grew up the son of a sharecropper in Arkansas picking cotton and working hard on the farm. He said he was inspired when he was young by the guitar playing of Django Reinhardt. I'm deeply amazed by Glen Campbell.

I also just turned 72 last month. Most people remember Glen for his singing and his TV show. However, he was one of the most talented studio musicians to ever play the musicial scene. The top guitarists (i.e. Roy Clark) could only smile and nod approvingly when Glen played. Even in his later years, even though he could no longer remember the words, he was still able to play the songs. His fingers still remembered the notes. That is a tribute to how great a guitarist Glen was!

I never thought of Glenn Campbell as country because I lived in Chicago and he was more of a cross over entertainer and was played on pop music stations.
I think country music is one type of music that has a lot of bad cheesy stuff but dig deeper and you find the really great stuff, glen campbell is one of the latter

I am sure you have heard him in plenty of songs and did not know it. He was a sought after studio musician. I met him once, he acted like an ass. But i knew even then, WE all have our down days. I spilled tomato juice on his white jacket just 4 minutes before he was to go on stage at a small venue. He quickly recovered from his angry laser stare at me and said; Is that my water? thanks kid. mmm did i say he acted like an ass? I meant , I did. I did not even say I was sorry. sorry Mr. Campbell up there , I was just a star struck schmuck.
I just came back to watch this clip for the umpteenth time, and it made me grin from ear to ear this time as it has on every other occasion in the past. I stand In Awe of Glen Campbell's Talent, and I'm always tickled pink to watch these greats of music tapping their feet and smiling as Glen plays one of his signature songs and comes forth with an amazing guitar break. What an amazing talent he had, and how wonderful that his peers and contemporaries feel exactly the same way.

It’s another thing to tear into it and pull the melody along with you. He was an absolute genius on guitar. Chet Atkins, Roy Clark were floored by him, and who wouldn’t be wow!BRAVO.

Yes, I can believe that. He’s from a musical family and played since he was a boy. Childhood is the best time to learn a musical instrument. The relationship between a child’s brain and training the connections in the young nervous system make it the perfect time to learn. It all becomes so ingrained in a way that is very difficult - perhaps impossible - to achieve as an adult. Of course he was talented on top of it!

Watching all those great country music stars looking at Glen Campbell perform that song, and seeing their faces basically saying “this dang guy is the most talented person here tonight” was incredibly satisfying!!!
In September of 1967, I sat with Glen and his band in an all-night coffee shop till 5:30 AM telling stories and jokes. He was easy to be around, relaxed and friendly. I'll also mention that my radio station back then (KMOR in SLC, UT) was among the very first to play "Gentle On My Mind" when the John Hartford version came out in May of '67. Glen's release was in August and we had it on the air the day we got our copy.

Dear Sir, thanks for the nice post and remarks. I first got to meet Glen in 1961 !!!! He was a session guitarist and vocalist. My Mom, Dad and Brother and I were coming back to San Jose, CA from South Dakota. We stopped into "Billie Jean's Hair & Nail Salon" in Albuq., NM There was a guy sitting in the back corner just playing his butt off on his guitar. My Dad said, this young man is great. I went over and introduced myself and family. He told me in the summer of 1961 - he wanted to be a professional singer. Years later in 1964, after I had meant the Righteous Brothers, Hal Blaine and The Wrecking Crew - which Glen was a member of , did I get the total picture. He got paid $35.00 a day to play guitar on albums of very famous people. Everyone at Gold Coast studios, starting with Sonny & Cher knew he'd be a BIG star, and he became one. I saw him in concert at least 50-60+ times, just like I did with The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. You can imagine that I never had to buy a ticket after about 1966 - it was all "on the house." I saw Glen go thru his ups and downs - as did with others.
I loved Bobby Hatfield (1940-2003). I collect celebrity autographs thus, after you ask say, Neil Diamond, 25-40 times to sign an autograph they sorta remember you and you form a "fan /celebrity" relationship."
Glen and The Righteous Bros - were my all-time favorites. I also got to meet Jimmy Layne Webb at least 20+ times and the list goes on. He is literally God's gift to my generation as one of the greatest singer-songwriter-composers - just look him up and see of of the GREAT songs he wrote. He was NEVER too busy to talk to any fan or sign autographs, pose for pictures, he was just such a fine Christian gentleman.
Thanks again and I hope I didn't bore you. I could write a book about my collecting adventures and the "friendships" that I made while collecting. Not all celebrities are nice to the fans - TRUST ME.... SOME PEOPLE THE PUBLIC WORSHIP'S ARE SO RUDE AND MEAN YOU NEVER GUESS IT WHEN YOU WATCH THEM ON TV OR IN A FILM. BUT I WON'T GO THERE AND PUBLISH THEIR NAMES. MOST celebrities, IF approached the right way - will sign autographs pose for pictures.
All of my old autograph friends - where we'd go out collecting together - at night - gosh we'd start 5:00 PM and end up staying out until 6:00 AM.
Picked up Frank Sinatra one night after waiting 10 hours. He was such a nice gentleman - it was his bodyguards, just doing their jobs, trying to keep us away from him - when he would actually tell them to back off and let him sign. He'd see us when he went into have dinner and then their late night poker game. Then more partying - but when he walked outta the club/restaurant - he immediately remember the faces that had been standing in the cold for 10 hours for one autograph and he would ALWAYS sign.
I will say this Danny Thomas and James Garner were two of kindness celebrities I've ever gotten to know. They just loved the fans. Mr and Mrs. Ronald Reagan long before his was the President of the United States and Nancy was first lady - they were such classy people to the very end. It didn't get any better than them. President Reagan, even after he got outta office would sign autographs and just talk to us fans about sports ... it was great. He had a GREAT lsugh that I can still hear to this day.

My God, at this time I was just a baby. In 1967 I was maybe 16 years old. I heard Glen on the radio and watched him on TV. I didn't know anything about bars and bands till much later when I played music for a living. This was a whole different breed of musicians and artists, great guitar solo, live, off the top of his head. It was just such an inspiring time. It must have been incredible for you to be in that business, at that particular time. Most people now know nothing in the real world of those whom paved the way. You got to be part of that.

Glen Campbell: The most underrated guitarist of all time.
Chet established the CGP title which was an invitation of distinction before his condition prevented him from playing. There were only 5 players ever invited into the CGP (Certified Guitar Player), Glen Campbell, Steve Wariner, John Knowles, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, and Paul Yandell was invited after Chet's death. I think Roy should have also been invited, but then see the level you had to be at to make there. Glen was amazing.

+eight inches He was not "underrated" at all. Prior to making it big in his solo career he was the most in demand session guitar player in LA. He played on hundreds of albums for a wide variety of musicians, mostly uncredited. He was an amazing guitar player. Even in "I'll Be Me" when he is struggling with the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's he could still play amazing guitar solos, seemingly by instinct.

Don't forget to mention his voice too John, that and him being such a fine man. I'm from England and not of the Glen Campbell generation or background but I know what a beautiful thing the man's music will remain.

I too feel sad about his departure, but through the technology we have created in this world, allows him still, to share his gift with us, and I really appreciate that as no matter how I feel, I feel a bit better after listening to this song.

and he passed that to his children. i think of ashely the most who helped her dad while he had memory issues called Alzheimer's on glens farewell tour. that also goes for glens last love his life and the rest of glens last family. he is a lucky dog to have that support an i love his rhinestone cowboy. and in that thought look at michael martin murphy song about cowboy logic .
you have 3 cowboys in the front of a bench seat pickup truck which is you best guess of a true cowboy. its the one in the middle. he does not drive and he doesn't have to open the gate especially during inclement weather.
He was also a certified BEACH BOY!! And toured with them for a year, while the other beach boy was indisposed. 🤷🏻♂️ But Rip GC. 🙏🙏
Campbell wasn't just some country bumpkin, just part of the greatest session players of the 60s, he knew his stuff and he knew it well.

The '60s were busy, as were the '70s , busy and busy. Here we are in 2021 and I finally discover Glen Campbell.
In 1971 I dropped out of High School. 50 years later things slow down enough to catch up.

@@tim59ism look up all the records that Glen performed on, from river deep mountain high, strangers in the night, Johnny Angel, good vibrations and all of The Beach Boys early recordings. Glen was first call guitarist for most recordings in the wrecking crew back in the day.

@@gregadams6055 I agree.. Glen toughed it out to the end. He performed as long as he could and never let it get the best of him. The best part is that nobody judged him when he did shows near the end. That's how we should treat each other...

Once in a great while you’ll catch a live video that shows how a great performer separates himself from other greats. This is that video for me with Glen Campbell. The great Roy Clark’s face speaks volumes.
Right out of high school I was fortunate enough to get a job at Gold Star Recording Studios. They weren't called the Wrecking Crew at the time, but I got to see Glen, Carol Kaye, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Larry Knechtel, and the rest of them nearly every day. I NEVER saw Glen play a bad note, nor did Carol. They were beyond amazing as clearly demonstrated by Glen's solo here. There were many many times Glen played his solos live on the tracking session. Over dubs? Why? Not when he had this kind of talent.
You see; way back before Pro Tools, there were pros.
I was fortunate beyond belief to have had those experiences... RIP Glen.
What a special job you had! To have been around that much talent every day must have been awesome. You know, it would spoil most people to the extent that they could not listen to average pro players anymore. I envy you immensely, but I thank you for sharing your experience and letting people know about these folks.

Yes! Every week I would stop in and ask to see Dave Gold. I was 19. Did you know Cher was a receptionist at Gold Star studios? Anyway, this went on for about five weeks…I kept showing up. And finally he said; “you really want to work here dont you!” Yes sir Mr Gold! Then he hired me right there on the spot - to take a dolly out back and unload a ton of new recording tape and office supplies! HAHA!!! But… I WAS IN the recording business!!! I was so excited I was always there before Dave opened up and I clocked out at 5:30 PM, but usually stayed ‘til midnight because I could help out on the night sessions (but no pay). Buffalo Springfield did a lot of night sessions… And nowadays kids have to pay $30 grand or more for classes at Full Sail and such. I was incredibly fortunate. I should probably do a podcast - so many stories from the old days…. Cheers!

I grew up in a Barrio in the southwest in the 60-70s and remember watching the Glen Campbell show on TV alongside my grandmother. His music transcends the cultural fabric of this country. My eyes well up for Mr. Glenn Campbell and his greatest hits every time I hear them.

Well, I’ve lost count long ago how many times I’ve watched this ❤️ this is just a masterpiece / magical time with so many legends- the rings, but so many amazing memories. I’m so grateful that my father introduced me to so many genres of music, but particularly having grown up in the south, these classic legendary country musicians/artists.

I’m a die hard rapper and I will chase that dream till I die but this is one of the most wholesome and beautiful performances I’ve ever seen. Makes me wish I was a simpler man. Glen Campbell was a wonderful and talented character and it’s a shame I’ll never meet the him. Rest In Peace Glen. ❤️🤠

Grete Nissen very true. When Glen passed, I saw Alice in an interview where he mentioned that he would sometimes get guitar lessons from GC.
He was an incredible talent, much more so than so many 'artists' nowadays. Too bad he had so many demons but then again, so many creative, talented people seem to have them. It's almost as if they go hand in hand.

Even when you're one of the best, there's a lot of pressure when playing in front of your peers. He made it through that solo and was happy it went well and so are his friends! I've been a Glen Campbell fan since he had his variety show on TV about a million years ago. We lost one of the good ones...
