Today I’m sharing how I attempted to track down one of the rarest puzzles in the world, Little Boy Blue Comes Home by Springbok, released in 1965.

Karen have you tried contacting the owners of Serendipity 3? Sometimes promotional stuff is kept (or falls behind a storage shelf) and forgotten about. Maybe there's a copy or two hanging around.

When she mentioned joining the Facebook groups and seeing “little boy blue” almost immediately I was like “wow that’s serendipitous” and then the restaurant the puzzle was used to promote is called “Serendipity”?!?! Crazy lol
So there’s a Gilmore Girls episode where Lorelai asks “Where did all the anvils go?” At a Friday night dinner… and now we know!! Your dad has them all!!! 🤣🤣 love your channel and congratulations on now being able to do it full time ☺️

On Rob’s website, he mentioned that there’s one called “Enchantment” that has a reflective surface. I assume it’d be a prismatic puzzle. Is that one even more rare? I would love to see what that would have looked like from the 1960’s.
I actually just got that one and I'll show it in my next video! It's somewhat rare, but they show up every so often.

I'm actually curious if Serendipity 3 would know anything about the puzzle. I've been there once only, and it's definitely very eclectic and kitsh inside. Unfortunately I don't know the history so I can't say if the ownership has passed hands at all since then
That's a good idea. I wonder if they still have some of the promotional materials from over the years. Some restaurants keep history items like that.

Vintage puzzle are so cool. Half a year ago I wasn't really that interested in jigsaw puzzle in general, and now I'm going crazy when I see any more rare or old ones. My sister just bought me Ravensburgers Magic Ocean from Color Starline for something like 0,5$ and I'm so happy I need to tell this to everyone XD There is something special about having things like that

There is this huge group on the website that is a book of faces called "Weird second hand finds that just need to be shared" (or something similar). I am currently not on said website, but I feel that if someone would share the video in that group, there would be a chance someone would find this blue puzzle for you within a week, lol.

I’m fascinated hearing stories about peoples collection,even though I don’t call myself a collector (I have some things that people may call a collection though) It’s fun to hear what got people in to something very specific.
I collect vintage silk scarves produced by a company called Jacqmar. The scarves range in date from the 1940's onwards. Some of the really early scarves, particularly the WW II era ones, are priced waaaay out of my price range but quite a few of the later ones are not as pricey. They look and feel so beautiful, with gorgeous art work and lovely hand rolled hems. It's an obscure hobby but very satisfying so I totally get where you are with your collection of puzzles.
Somehow, you've made videos about puzzles, one of the most interesting things to watch on CZcams. That deserves a 👏.
I'm a Beatles fan, so there's a TON of rare items out there. I think the rarest thing I have is a set of four Beatles cuff links, still on the original sixties cardboard backing.

Your dad's anvil collection looks really impressive and interesting! It's great that he has a big garage to store them. Storage space is a big limiting factor for many collectors

I know someone who collects the historical wedding/bridal cups - don't know if you ever heard of them. They are so beautiful and go way back and the idea is that both the bride and the groom can drink from one cup simultaneously. There are quite rare ones, e.g. from the 17th century and she is currently looking for a very specific one. The search for it reminds me of your investigation for the blue one! :) Love from Germany ❤️

I have a small collection of vintage knitting machines. One is actually "BLUE" with 8 buttons that replicate knitting patterns across the row. It was given to me by an elderly Japanese woman who said it had belonged to her mother-in-law.
I collect Mold-a-rama figures, and there are a handful of molds that were created but were never installed in a place where people could buy them. They were vended for private events, or were made as art pieces with very limited copies made. Some of the mold sets have been confirmed as damaged or destroyed so there won't be any more made. I have a few of these in my collection and they are my absolute favorites.
I’m an artist and there’s a lot of limited edition supplies that are near impossible to find, as well as ones that are still being made but in such limited quantity that it’s near impossible to get your hands on one without lots of money and some connections. There’s one antique paint that a few artists try to get their hands on because it’s such a unique color, but it hasn’t been made since the 1800’s because of the origins of the pigment: mummy brown, I am not one of those artists. But I’d happily get paint made with lapis lazuli, it’s a bright blue pigment made from a rare mineral found in only one mine. Also yin min blue is similarly rare and for similar reasons. It’s a lab-created pigment, but the minerals used to make it are also rare.
The original Indian yellow is a similarly hard to source pigment, just second to mummy brown.
I collect twisty/mechanical/Rubiks-style puzzles and brain teasers, and half my time with the hobby is randomly seeing stuff on eBay I never knew existed then frantically researching it to determine if it’s something I want! I think the twisty puzzle concept is overall newer than jigsaws (they’ve existed forever, but the explosion of them came after 1974 with the invention of the cube), but due to so many people making their own custom puzzles (out of injection molding and now 3D printing), and the sheer number made in the Soviet states that were unknown to the West for decades, there’s all kinds of obscure and rare things that come up.
My daughter and I used to collect little glass figurines. We had the most beautiful glass pyramid that would shine blue sparkles on the wall.

In watercolor world, the elusive ones are paint from pigment that are no longer manufactured / produced.
The problem with watercolor is that it's something that you consume (use up) the more you use it. Unlike a puzzle that can (theorically ) be re-used infinitely.
And so even if you were lucky to be able to "stock up " on a pigment / paint before it'm was discontinued ... It's either you use it but will end end not having it anymore or not use it to keep it but that defy the whole purpose of having it in the first place!
(Some colours are the original quinacridone gold, manganese blue )

Being a model railroader, I've had times when I've been searching all over for something that has once been popular but is now rare and hard to find. It's so great when you find that something that you've been searching for for so long. Almost like finding a gold mine. But don't be blue if you can't find it right away. It'll make you just appreciate it more when you do. :-)

I think as a crocheter/knitter the most rare items are really expensive yarn. Also, there are hooks/needles that used to be used by literally royalty but those are in museums at least

As a fellow puzzle lover, this elusive blue puzzle is fascinating. Your channel has rekindled my love for puzzles in a big way. I am in school and working at the same time so I don’t have lots of time for hobby/leisure activities anymore. Watching your videos, in a way, helps me still feel like I’m participating in the activity of puzzling, even if I don’t really have the time to complete any myself.

This was such a fun video! I was feeling blue before watching it, but this video has nourished my soul with the sheer specificity of it. My hobby relates to fountain pens and there are indeed very rare and coveted pens in that world. The world of vintage fountain pen collecting is quite intense though, so I prefer focusing on the paper and ink part of the hobby
I collect purses and shoes. I love handmade leather bags made by black artists. Blue was my favorite growing up.
This video made me want to watch the movie Serendipity again. How serendipitous was it that you and Linda emailed each other within minutes. And how serendipitious yet again that someone in the Facebook group you joined just happened to mention the elusive Blue puzzle. Very interesting Karen. I obtained an extremely rare and valuable pristine replica of monet sailboat on argenteuil from guild puzzle circa 1930s. It is valuable since the one at Irish museum was damaged by vandalism in 2014. I picked up a whole set of guild and Tuco puzzles last year from ebay which included some classic artwork. Would love to tell you about collection
Big it up for the Wayback Machine! I'm guilty of using a bookmarklet forcing many web pages I read onto the Wayback Manchine to ensure there are backups of them. This has proved vital for several projects I've worked on for myself, my workplace and for other people.

I would say my hobby is looking for golden age detective mysteries. I adore Agatha Christie, but because there are so many of her books I find very difficult to find Dorothy Sayers and Margery Allingham works where I'm from (and they are well-known, finding a Gladys Mitchell book would be a miracle around here)
I did find two by Ngaio Marsh a few years back in an antique shop, and fortunately the seller didn't notice how happy I was because he sold them to me for very cheap 😂
Hey Karen, maybe you would like to hear about my own rare puzzle journey.
In 2012 in the Uk there was a company called Home Town World, and they made jigsaws about various towns and counties around the UK. Out of the 12 made, I have 11. I am only missing Edinburgh, and I have never seen it come up for sale. The only evidence there ever was one is an Amazon listing from that time.
I think my best moment was when a Singapore one popped up on Ebay, and I have never seen it before or since. I think it was a one off, because of minor differences in the print quality from the others I have.
We'll keep searching!

Hello, Karen! My big hobby is stamp collecting, which has some pretty well-known rarities (none of which I own as far as I know). But I also collect foreign language instructional materials. I do much less than I used to, but I did run into an English/Swedish vest pocket phrase book from *1901*! 🤯 Imagine my surprise about 10 years later when I found the same thing (size, type, and publisher) in German (my college major and I'm still fluent)! I haven't found much information on these so maybe it's time to kick it up a notch
Fun to see all your detective work for this blue puzzle. My only collection is Fiesta Ware dishes. I have a few "sort of" rare pieces but that's it.

I sew quite a bit and as a present my family restored a family heirloom of ours back to working order for me to use- a 1904 singer treadle sewing machine owned by my great great grandmother. And now I’m very tempted to start collecting some other vintage sewing machines that I could use.
In that master spreadsheet (see 3:38), besides the Red Riding Hood (PA20), there's also another one with the same title (PZL6034). Similarly, with Little Boy Blue, there's the PA23 (Coming Home) you've been discussing, but also Little Boy Blue (PZL1091). I wonder what that latter one is and its relation to the one you're seeking.
I believe the other Red Riding Hood is the re-release in 1970, and Little Boy Blue is an unrelated puzzle that just happens to have a similar name. There are tons of pictures of that one online 🙂

Makes me blue that I didn't save more of my old Springbok puzzles. I sold a lot before moving cross country over 30 years ago.
I like to read and collect manga and own a holographic volume one of the Naruto series. My mom saw it at a local bookstore for the sticker value ($8) and got it for me for Christmas many years ago and it turns out it was one of 5,000 printed and is extremely rare now. Love your videos!!

I have the only copy of the DVD of Hellblock 13, starring Debbie Rochon and Gunnar Hanson, in existence signed by Gunnar Hanson. Gunnar is, obviously, most famous for playing Leatherface in the original classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I know this because when I met him, he told me he had never signed a copy of Hellblock 13 before. I said, "That's cool. Will you please make sure it's the only one you ever sign?" He replied, "Yes." I said, "Thank you." Another completely unique, one of a kind item I have is on an issue of Cinefantastique. The cover subject was Debbie Rochon promoting he film, American Nightmare. In that movie, she plays a character named Jane Toppan. I have that issue signed by both Debbie, and Debbie signing in character as Jane. It's the only copy of that magazine she has signed as Jane and she promised me it will be the only one.

i got really into dice for tabletop rpgs and got down a rabbit hole of a specific collection of dice from chessex that used to have a different glitter in it that they now can no longer use as some component of the glitter is apparently used in the production of Euro money so they cant use it anymore. the older glitter looks different so they are really sought after :D really enjoyed this deep dive tho!

I love these deep dives in obscure collectibles!!!!! also you two mailing eachother this close to eachother was insane!
I have a few hobbies myself, 2 big ones are magic the gathering (trading card game) and star wars my rarest magic the gathering cards are probally a few cards from a set that had "bad" printings so the whole print run was destroyed but a number of booster boxes (boxes that contain the card packs) had allready been shipped out, so there is very little out there they nicknamed the set summer magic if you interested in looking it up.
My rare star wars thing is 3 signed sheets of the original production storyboards (1 of each of the original 3 movies)
I had look on dutch second hand sites but expectably no little boy blue coming home showed up but it was worth a shot, i will keep an alert set up just in case one pops up.

Interesting video. Vintage puzzle collecting isn't something I would have thought was even a thing till I started watching your channel. That BLUE puzzle will be very difficult to find by the sound of it. I hope you get a copy at some point. Good luck.
I hope you find the blue puzzle one day! I am into fountain pens, and there are certain ones that have become very hard to find. A lot of pen people have what we call a “grail pen,” which is usually hard to find and/or very expensive. One of mine was the 2011 Pilot Vanishing Point special edition in pink. I got one a couple of years ago, and paid about 3x retail 😳 but it was totally worth it!
