In this video I take a closer look at the new #Parallel #Guides from #Benchdogs. NB: The Benchdogs parallel guides attach using the upward-facing t-slot on the left-hand side of the standard Festool-pattern guiderail eg Festool, Makita, Triton, Erbauer, Titan, Excel etc... If your rails don't have this upwards-facing t-slot, they wont fit.

An excellent review of yet another excellent product from Benchdogs.
I have the festool version...it works well enough, but is too short in length, and tends to tip as it sits either side of the board you are ripping.( I fixed mine by drilling a hole in each end of the stop and bolting on a little tab that rests on the workpiece)
This however seems a much more practical solution and is very reasonably priced compared to the festool design. It's on my shopping list.

"gard sakes" ..... I love this channel for the woodworking tips, but I always stay for the blooper reel.
Once again, excellent tutorial! I pre-ordered the very same just after Christmas. I did toy with the idea of making an adjustable guide myself, but when I saw that BD were offering this at £120, I decided to take the plunge.
When I placed the order, the only options were the 1m or 3x300 and something guides, but having watched the excellent woodgrafter demo' of parallel guide, I noticed in the comments that there was also an option for the 2x400 and something guides. I, too, decided on this option for the same reason you stated: the ability to rip a full sheet down the middle, and, the knowledge that I'd be struggling in my wee workshop to accommodate the 1m guide, which on narrower rips I'd be obliged to dance around whilst trying to control the tracksaw.
I emailed BD and they very kindly amended my order.
I also have the BD rail square on back order, should be with me next month. I'd very much appreciate a video comparing the two solutions.

Because of you sir, I was forced to buy this guide. They came to me 2 weeks ago and they are fantastic. with them I can now cut directly on the boards with absolute precision. It is an ideal complement to an mft style table equipped with the benchdogs fence (which I also bought because of you). Thanks Peter for giving us your experiences and knowledge.

Great video Peter. Thanks. Mine arrived this week but the inner block had a lot of play inside the rail and they promptly replied and are going to send a new kit for me to test and send back the other.
The 3d printed stop block was a little too tight at first but after asking politely it allowed the bar to go into it.

Totally agree about the narrow cuts one. Some known size spacer under the rail works just as well and doesn't mess with your calibration.
I didn't know or remember that you had an affiliate code with them. But I'll use it in the next purchases.
Got a taiga square but the benchdogs one is so beautiful I might jump into it later.

Luv the out take. Thanks for the heads up re bench dogs narrow cut product. What I didn't like about these guides was the way you lose the calibration when doing narrow cuts. But as you say there's always more than one way to achieve the goal. And in that vain I would also like to hear your thoughts on squares and parcels guides.
Thanks! Yes, I think the narrow cut option could have done with a bit more prior thought - though I guess an option might be an extra set of rail adapters if you need to make those cuts regularly. Mostly though, I think the alternatives do the job pretty well. 👍

I made my own a couple of years ago with t track and 3D printed parts, they are a game changer if you are cutting down sheets into parts. Just set the stop on a tape and go, quick and supper accurate. The bench dogs version looks very nice and for anybody cutting sheets often would soon pay for them in time saved.

I'd be interested in any more details (eg stl files etc for the 3D parts) if you have them. I've got the bargain bucket track saw (evolution) and most commercial systems either don't fit, cost more than the saw&track or both :) Thanks

Nice video Peter!! I know that the TSO guides would be difficult for you to acquire, but those along with the Bench Dogs would be a great comparison video. BenchDogs also make a short right hand fence with flag stop that I assumed was their option for waste side cuts, but it'll be interesting to see what the new product will be, meanwhile Karl's little jigs work great. I'd be interested in your views on parallel guides v rail square. Oh, and love the end credits bloopers 😂.

Thanks for the video. It would be interesting to get a comparison of the various competing solutions available on the market. Some have flip stops which seems an interesting idea.
I ended up making my own out of MDF using cheap Incra 'Metric Incremental Racks' to be able to reposition the stops consistently (with M6 screws added to provide a 'micrometric' adjustment option). It's not as light, but it's tailored to some additional unique needs ;-)

I really do like the Mafell Plunge saw and love the rail system but I do think Mafell has missed the boat compared to Festool when it comes to all those extra features that come with Festool tools reminds me a bit like Iphone and Samsung everything always comes out in IPhone first 👍
Thanks Paul. Yes, I like the way Mafell rails join together - but that’s all, I’m afraid. It doesn’t hurt that the Festool-pattern has been so widely copied, either, of course! 👍👍
I went with the 3x330 option as it can fit in a systainer. In fact, as I've got a rail square on order, I went for a sys-combi 2 and the rail square option with the insert but no systainer. The rail square will sit in the upper true systainer part and the 3x330 parallel guides sit happily in the drawer with room to spare. In fact, even with the end connectoirs attached, they just fit sideways if you take off the locking knobs or at an angle if you don't. Just a bit of foam cutting to tidy that bit up.
I also have the BD mk2 fence in 3x350 format in a BD systainer (damn - too much BD stuff????). The same connectors let me connect a length of fence to the parallel rails if I want to extend the range further and I have the option to use the metal flag stops rather than the 3D stops if I want. Locking the 2 systainers together I have all my BD stuff in one portable place.
BD is getting to be a bit of an integrated system. Wonder where they got that idea Festool ?

I have some similar from a different brand. Would be great if manufacturers could make it a flip stop as once I’ve set my stop in place I don’t want to move. But if I want to cut a piece oversize (trim cut) then turn it around I can’t do it without changing the stop a flip stop would change that. It’s probably quite important to do the trim cut as only the side that is under the rubber of the splinter guard is guaranteed no to have chips in it.

i would also like to see a rail square versus parallel guides comparison video because i think if your measuring from a known good edge and cutting from a known square edge the only thing to worry about is your own measuring and marking out. or am i missing something ,time to make that video Peter lol

If they added a set screw on the t block you would not lose you scale positioning when switching to narrow.
Calibration weakness? When you flip them over to tighten them? Gauge with feeler gauge, flip, insert feeler gauge again, then lock up. .6mm in my case, pretty good.
Or you can calibrate them flipped over, using a rule. In truth though, as long as you done loosen the nuts off completely there’s no movement when the rail’s flipped. Good trick with the feeler gauge though Dave - I’ll remember that one! 👍👍

So, I’m pretty sure that’s a no to Scheppach I’m afraid. I believe that Benchdogs are working on a solution for the Mafell/Bosch rails. 🤷♂️👍

Im torn between the parallel guides and the rail square. Both have their uses but I wonder if the square is a better option given Benchdogs attachment due for the new version which will essentially give you stops - from what I've heard.

I would have thought a rail square with 1 parallel guide would be the combination to go for for 90 degree quadrilaterals. You square 2 adjacent edges of the sheet using the track and rail square. Then keeping the rail square on one edge you use the guide to measure from the adjacent squared edge. The cut should then be both square (due to the rail square) and parallel. You can then trim to square the 4th edge just using the rail square. Good for repeated pieces, say shelves or drawer pieces. Thoughts Peter?

it would have great if you had done comparative analysis of the various available options. as you always do.
I’m not sure what else I could have done tbh. All sets are the same price. All sets work the same way. They have the same track connectors and work with the same tracks. I’ve given the cutting capacities of each set, and the variations of 1/2/3 rail options for maximum capacity. I’ve suggested the likely usage for each set (in workshop, on site) and expressed a personal preference with my reasons. 🤷♂️👍

Peter, love your videos, as an occasional user and diyer I have splashed out on a festool track saw. What rail square would you recommend as a value for money Vs performance option, I’m using these only occasionally so don’t want to spend a fortune but want something that works each time I use it ?
Hi Ben and thanks! TBH I think the decent makes - Benchdogs, FC tools, TSO, etc... are all around the same kind of money, with maybe the Benchdogs one coming in at a little less at £110 inc VAT. You can get some cheaper squares off eBay, but I don’t know anything about the quality, and have had disappointing results from a cheap DeWalt one many years ago. What will the improvement comparing benchdogs versus the Festool parallel guides for the Rail System which can cut really narrow strips and upto 600mm .....?
They’re different animals. Parallel guides are for ripping regular strips from a sheet. Rail squares are for square cuts from eg a pencil mark. 👍
Hi Peter nice video and keep up the good work, Have you had a chance of using the new Bench dogs square, with the tool less clamping. Just asking as I got one for Xmas and have had good results but had to do a little bot of fettling to get it fully functional?
hi Kenny, and thanks! I have one, have it fitted, but haven't used it yet; it's the one I'll use to compare to the parallel guides in a forthcoming video. What fettling did you need to do, out of interest?
I had to drill a bit of clearance in the threaded holes as the dogs didn't fully screw in up to the shoulders. I also had a tooling dent where the rail sits/slides, just filed it flat. Finally had to fit both spare cam clams, 1st snapped on first fit, second not much after. Looked like the 3d printing hadn't adhered on the tabs, replaced set seem to be holding but I do not try and push the tabs to hard.
Hi Peter Do you know f you can join two long lenghts together. I often make tall cabinets around 2mts long and would like them all to be exactly the same length . I would only need one guide as I would use the guide square for cuts. My thinking is that this would help with the lining up of the LR 32 hole system.
Measurements on the rail wouldn't be a problem once set up as consistency of cut lenght is my priority? Other systems that can do this are over double the price.
That's an interesting one; yes, the same joining bar could be used to join the long lengths of extrusion, so that certainly wouldn't be a problem. And I hadn't thought of using these with the LR32! Like it! 👌 👍
Hi Peter, once again a great video. I have some remarks/questions:
1. I cant find the 35cm extention? I can only order it in 1m, 2x 44,5 3x33?
2. It's only for the festool/makita/triton rails right? I thought they were busy developing the rails for bosch/mafell also.
3. Do you think these guides can be used to square up a full sheet? (with the right extentions) By:
a. cutting a couple of mm of the factory edge of one of the long sides
b. use the parallel guides to make the other long side parallel to the other long side
c. use the mft to square the short sides to the long sides?
But then it would need at least 122 cm of extentions + the length of the stops. Or am I making an error here?
4. I would also like railsquare vs parallel guides video!
Hi Jelle. 35cm extension come with the 1 metre rail. 2/ Yes, it uses the up-facing t-slot to connect. Bosch/Mafell still in development afaik. 3/ yes, but... they’re parallel guides - they don’t cut square. But sure, with an MFT - or a rail square - it’s doable. And you’d need the full rail set to get ~1220mm 👍👍

My kit arrived a while ago and I was a bit disappointed when I realised I need to order other connectors and bars for narrow cuts . Is this what you meant when you said bench dogs will come with additional products for narrow cuts? Being able to buy them bits separate? Thanks
No, as I mentioned in the video I was a little underwhelmed by the ‘narrow cut solution’ as supplied, and relayed this to Ralph at Benchdogs, who told me that they were working on a better solution for this. That’s all I know. And I can only review the products and relay prices as supplied; if specifications or scope of deliver change post-review there’s not much I can do I’m afraid.
Great video Peter Look great using with a rail for cutting down sheets. No reason why you would know as Benchdogs don't, but any idea if they fit an Erbauer rail?

I used the promo code and talked with Ralph a bit over the phone and finally just received my parallel guides, hinge and fence. Everything seems to be in good order outside of one of the parallel guide bars needs to be replaced due to some misalignment issues. Do you have plans to do a video on the narrow rip feature? No instructions came with any of it which I was kind of disappointed about. Love your videos and advice thanks for all the help.

I haven't played with them very much yet but I'm still not sure how calibrating the parallel guides to both the narrow rip guides and the standard parallel guides is possible I'm sure the reasoning will present itself during the process. I have some questions though about breaking down sheet good and using parallel guides and using a square. Forgive the newbie questions. Would one start breaking down a sheet first buy cleaning up one edge then using the PG or clean the edge then square up with a square guide from bench dogs or TSO etc then use the PG?
I’d clean up one edge with the tracksaw first, then use the parallel guides to make the rip (long) cuts, then the square for the cross cuts. You could use the parallel guides for making the cross cuts, cut you need to check the end for square as that would be the datum that all others are referenced off. This is where the rail square comes in, of course! Hope that makes sense! P
When calibrating would you not be better off moving the scale end up to ply instead and scratching a calibration mark into the slides. That way the fixed track ends will remain fully butted up to the rails and less likely to move
There’s 2 bolts in there - they aren’t moving!
Unfortunately I already have the Festool PGs. They are difficult to calibrate and clumsy to work with - one of Festool’s rare dud designs. - these look much better. But I don’t think I can justify the duplicate purchase. Thanks for the video though - great as always.

Will these work with the cheap rails from the Aldi saws? Or the rails lacking the T slot prevent that?
No, these rely on the upward facing t-slot at left for the connection, so I’m afraid they’re a non-starter with Aldi/schepoach rails, and the Lidl Parkside as well. 🤷♂️👍

Hi Peter, I was thinking about parallel guides this week and then you pop a video out about it. You hooked into my cookies to see what i am browsing for again? :)
Seriously though, I was interested in the guides as i am making a lot of small rips but they don't work fro the sort of sizes I need. I wondered if you have any suggestions? I need to rip full sheets of MDF to make lots (several hundred) 75mm and 150mm strips from 18mm MDF. Currently I have to rip in half with the plunge and then take it to the table saw for the rest but would love a plunge saw solution that was repeatable in a tent in the customers garden :)
Easiest way with these PGs would be to set the stops to say, 300mm, and use a 150mm spacer under the rail to rip your 150mm strips, and a 225mm spacer to make your 75s. Not ideal, but it would work. 👍

I’m hesitant about ordering them, mainly because whatever price they’re listed at is not what I’ll be paying for them: subtract UK VAT, add Belgium VAT, add import tax, add customs handling fee (last time I hit that it was €22). I’m wondering if there are any benefits to Brexit on your end of the “bargain”?
