Inside the extremist Russian militias fighting alongside Ukraine | DW News

  • Ukraine’s fight for survival against Russia has attracted all manner of allies, including those who do not align with Ukraine's values.
Three Russian units said they carried out attacks inside Russian territory. They were together on the battlefield and at a press conference, but wanting to hurt Putin’s Russia is where their commonality ends. The Legion Freedom of Russia is seen as liberal. The Siberian Battalion is made up mainly of minorities from Russia. Denis Nikitin’s Volunteer corps describes itself as nationalist and has a far-right agenda.
Russia justified its invasion of Ukraine with the lie that it was ‘denazifying’ it. This, in a country where the far right doesn’t hold a single parliamentary seat.
And Ukraine cooperating with Neo-Nazis might seem counterintuitive. But for now, the enemy of Ukraine's enemy counts as some kind of friend.
DW’s Max Zander meets a Russian commander who’s taken up arms against his own country.

Russian media tends to say that it’s only Moscow that has people who don’t like Putin…we of course know that is not true. I think most people in Chechnya don’t like him for example. So possible once war started and they started conscripting they saw similar views as the right wingers in the interview.
I’m more surprised there are right wingers against Putin to be honest.

To be fair, several of these groups (if not the majority) have weird beliefs. One of the larger groups (covered in this video, actually, the Russian Volunteer Corps) is actually made-up of Russian ultra-nationalist-isolationists that believe Russia should essentially have zero foreign relations and should close their borders to all immigration.
But, regardless, of course DW is going to describe that as “extremists.” They describe anyone to the right of Stalin as “extremist.” It also gets clicks.

Because some of them are Russian ultra-nationalists from within Russia who fully support the idea that Russia must conquer and enslave all, except they utterly hate Putin.
Remember Vladlen Tatarsky who Putin had murdered a couple months ago? He was an ultra-nationalist like them, wants Russia to conquer, and they will support or resist whoever serves that purpose. Tatarsky did it by supporting the regime (who then killed him), these guys do it by fighting against the regime. But that doesn't make them friends per se.
They're not friends of Ukraine, they're enemies of Putin. If tomorrow news comes in that Random Oligarch X has had Putin hanged in Red Square and released a statement that he will restore Russia to greatness, you have no idea what those guys will do in terms of allegiance.
Compare them to the guys who were firing tank shells at the Russian parliament in 1993: They're not for democracy, they're just opposed to the autocrats in power.

If you don't like the means and allies Ukraine has to employ to survive the onslaught - then provide some alternatives!
As far as I remember, there were some countries who signed the Budapest memorandum promising Ukraine territorial integrity. Now instead of providing adequate support to restore that integrity, these rich and powerful countries are busy searching for a handful of nationalists who fight on Ukrainian side. It's a disgrace!
Also, this is not representative at all. Even though the report mentions two other Russian units, there are no comments about them, it is all focused on RDK. This RDK has perhaps 300-400 people in it. And Ukrainian forces consist of about 700 000 people!

This just proves that unarmed opposition is useless in an armed conflict. At the moment the best opposition that Russia has are:
    1) Armed forces of Ukraine
    2) A small right-wing Russian nationalist RDK (Russian volunteer corps)
    3) A miniscule centrist element that calls itself Freedom of Russia legion.
    4) An even smaller Siberian Battalion comprised of ethnic minorities.
That's it. The rest of the liberal talkshop has zero inpact on the situation. To some extent this is by design of their Western support grants that limit even what they can say in public, let alone fight.

You have to remember in 2014 Ukraine had barely a military and the One of the MAIN reasons Russia was not able to take the entire Donbass was because of Azov battalion and other far right militias that were able to slow down the Pro Russian separatists groups. On top of that Ukraine has many far-right Military actions that are extremely effective, and the Anti Putin Russian militias are also very effective. To arrest them and disassociate them self's from them could cause major problems and spark rebellion within Ukraine ranks.

If Russia wants to be against migration, it is Russia's right as a sovereign nation to decide that for themselves. But if it is not the will of the majority of the people, it becomes a dictatorial decision. That's why free and fair elections should decide which route a country should take, so you can debate your points in a house of representatives and gather your support there, and we all know that Russia's past elections were anything but free and fair. Politically you might disagree, but if you fight for the same political arena to settle those disagreements, you can still be considered an ally...
