    Very useful, thank you! Took notes on 3 D's - Dead, Diseased, Damaged & Remove enough branches within so a bird can fit through. Great, simple advice.

    Thanks for the video. I have two nuccio bella rossa. They need pruning. This video is helpful. They also have a lot of bugs on. Pruning may help with this as more light penetration will provide less comfort for the bugs.

    In this video it is mentioned to cut in the direction of the bud just below the cut, the direction one wants the camilia to grow in. I can't really see what is being said. How to cut so that the cut fosters the desired direction?

    Thanks for the video. I have to cut away a really large branch from a camelia as that branch is dying, and I’d like to know if I need to do anything to prevent infection?

    Thank you for sharing your tips. I have one Japonica Camellia which is very productive, bloom all year around. I read that we should prune Camellia after blooming season to prepare for next blooming. However, my camellia tree always has a lot of buds waiting to bloom. I am not sure when to prune it in order to keep it healthy without cutting off the flower buds and new sprouts? Do you have any suggestion for me?

    My Camillia tree was fully grown when I purchased my home so I'm not sure what variety it is. However it is 10-12 feet tall and needs to be pruned back as I can not reach the top. I would like it to be 6-8 feet tall at most. Not sure how to go about getting that done. Advise please on where to start and when to start. Also need to know how and when to feed it. Thanks so much. Your video has given me the most helpful information so far.

      Hi Diane
      If you can handle the Camellia looking a bit ugly for a year or so, you can actually cut it right back. It will almost always reshoot - it’s called “hat-racking”. However, it will take lots of regular formative pruning to make it look neat again - you’ll be having to constantly pinch out buds and new shoots to shape it to how you want it to look. Laying down a decent compost as mulch in the winter will be the best times to feed it, ready for the growing season. They're hardy and don’t really require much fertiliser unless the soil is extremely poor. Good luck!

    I have two camellias that were at least 50 years old and much taller than my house. I cut one down to about head height. It's still alive, but looks like crap. Anyway to fix it to make it look better? I am afraid to touch the other one.

      Give it some acid like oak leaves and some acidic plant food. Your local garden shop can help you find the right mix.

    Nice! I wanted to ask you that I have my Camelia in a pot, since it’s so hot almost 30 degrees C and over every day, I brought it indoors! The leaves are shedding, even the lush green ones! So, should I take it out even when it’s so hot and humid? I can put it under a tree though! Please suggest, I’m stressing out!!!

    My camellia is about 3 years old in a pot and it is getting very tall, can I cut the top off without hurting the plant.

    • @wellingtoncitycouncil
      @wellingtoncitycouncil  Před 6 lety

      Hi Lynette! Yes, you definitely can. Camellias can handle hard pruning and should come back with new shoots easily.

    Thank you for the video. I have an very old (about 60 years) camellia Japonica in my fount yard. It has not been doing well this year. It has grown about 7 feet tall. Most of the green branches and leaves are on the top. lately it has been having brown leaves. (I have cut most of the brown leaves and branches off). It has not been pruned at all. I have read many articles on the internet about pruneing camellia. I am not sure about pruning the old one all way to the base. I need advice on doing that. I want to prune it like a bush about 2 feet tall. Is it safe to cut that much at once? How is it the cut, should be flat across or at an angle? I wish I could show you the picture of it. The main trunk is about 4 inches in diameter. Thank you for what ever info you may have in advance.

      Hi Carole, There’s a couple of things you can do. A camellia will grow back even if you cut it back to ground level, so that’s one option - it will create new shoots off the edge of the stump, from the cambium layer. However, it will take lots of regular formative pruning to make it look neat again - you’ll be having to constantly pinch out buds and new shoots to shape it to how you want it to look. The other option is to remove it and buy a new camellia that is a patio or dwarf style (if you only want one that’ll be about 2 feet high) - it will save you a lot of work on the pruning. Good luck Carole and let us know what you decide to do!

      @noneofyourbeeswax01 Před 5 lety

      They flower from winter to late spring, depending upon the variety. This is the reason for their popular name of "Winter Rose".

    • @ejohnson3131
      @ejohnson3131 Před 4 lety

      Yeah, they bloom from early fall to late spring when not much else is blooming in the garden. I think witch hazel is the only other plant that blooms in the winter.
