  • Camellias can be pruned into topiary balls and make a dramatic addition to the garden. They look good when flowering, and add a sculptural element through the year.
The Japanese call this' Niwake' which actually just means 'Garden Tree' - However the Japanese form of a Garden tree is often pruned or sculptured dramatically. So in this instance Niwake refers to cloud pruning.
This topiary tutorial show the steps on how to take a mature camellia and prune it in to a topiary that will add style to any garden or courtyard.

It takes a while to make these pruning videos as we try to show results. I will try to get a few others started so we can build up the library. A new video on pruning Buxus, sort of Japanese style coming soon, stay tuned.

Very usefull. I have recently started a camellio topiary bank, and a couple look like they want to grow big, so wecan do this cloud method to them.

So you may need to check the pH of your soil. 5.8 to 6.6 is ideal as camellias like an acidic soil. You can also find specialist Camellia fertiliser which can help with this. Mulch around the plant to maintain moisture and help improve the soil. Lots of organic matter. Also a deep watering occasionally may be needed during hot periods. Hope this helps.@@emmynguyen1693
