Great advice, thanks. I live in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand where the climate is very similar to Melbourne. I’ve just purchased about six different camellias (two of each) and am about to plant them. So this video was very helpful.

Oh me too - just started watching another video. Got 5 and a half minutes in and all I had heard was a lot of names of products and their properties and then told BUT DON'T USE THEM. Why mention them then?????? There was another 20 minutes left on the video - but I just left after telling the yter why. I didn't give thumbs down just left constructive criticism. This was short, sweet and straight to the point. My kinda video. No one has time to be wasting.

Hello and thank you for the info on Japonica and Sasanguas. I didn't know much about the types until a Horticulturalist in a garden centre said that for the area I have, the Sasanguas are great. However, happy to learn more and thank you once again. I would like to cover fence from my neighbour, by using the Japonica plant. I have the fence and 0.600 m requisition from council, I have now a pergola with lattice. MY QUESTION: will this area of 3 m do well if I was to purchase the Japonica, it is a semi shade area. The sun comes out early morning until 11 am and then it goes away. It has good lighting but not too much sun. Please help before I spend again so much money, as I am re-vamping my garden with beauty. Nance

You’re gonna want to look for Ackerman hybrids, April series is tough and hardy. If leaves turn brown after a tough winter, just be patient and wait for it to regrow. Watering that following summer to re-establish is imperative. Don’t fertilize after early summer, or that late season tender growth will suffer in fall. I recommend Holly-Tone.

What species, specifically? Regardless, they are ericaceous i.e in Ordo 'Ericales' and needs an acidic soil. C. japonica is not a variety as stated in the video it's a species. Varietas is lower taxonomic rank than species.
