    Good old reliable hydrangeas. Here we are 4b and blue hydrangeas are not for our climates. Harsh winters make them a really big challenge. If not impossible.
    But for others they produce flowers year after year and with almost no maintenance. And these flowers last for months, from endjuly until frosts even later. When they are covered by snow.
    The flowers turn gradually from creamy white to a beautiful pink. I love hydrangeas because they are essentially the only shrub that blooms in late summer.

    Thank you Martin, most helpful hydrangea pruning video. I have the peniculta's in containers, can i treat them like the arborescens and cut them down to the base or do they have to have the structured frame? thanks

    Thank you for a wonderful explanation...the best yet! My aborescens grow to over 6 feet tall and droop while many blooms seem too weighty, especially after the first big wind. Should I prune them as they're growing or how do I control the height???

    Just found the channel, brilliant I have to say. have subscribed. A question if you get chance to reply? I have flowers on a blue hydrangea which has taken 4 years in flowering. I would love to cut about 5 stems to dry them but do not want to compromise next years growth and flowering. Is it ok to cut them as described?

    Hi! I loved this, very informative. However, there was no mention of the oak leaf hydrangea, which I planted this spring. I got lovely blooms but they went to bronze within a month. The leaves are dying back now as it’s end of October, though that die back started in September. I think this plant goes dormant in winter, though our CA winter is mild. Would appreciate your insights!

      Hey Barbara, sorry for the delayed response! - Pruning is exactly the same and because your weather is milder, you can prune in late winter, before new growth starts to open up - I hope this helps and thanks ever so much for your support! Keep Gardening!

    great video thank you! most thorough one ive watched so far on youtube and nice clear shots of exactly where to cut on the stem - much appreciated. One question - I live in Sydney and my hydrangea macrophylla still has most of its leaves (currently middle of winter here)...should I still prune the same way?

      Hi, you should be able to prune in the same way and you can do it in late winter as I’m sure frost won’t be a problem for you in Sydney. Martin

    Thank you so much for this very informative video. I have purchased the mophead Hydrangea about 2 weeks ago and its currenlty blooming. Can i deadhead it should the flowers finish blossoming within jext few weeks with a hope it will blossom again this year or should i now leave it in peace and deadhead in spring next year? Thank you.

      It will only have one main flush of blooms a year, so no need to deadhead until spring. Martin

    I hard pruned one that was short of water and light which didn't flower last year. This year, only tiny flower heads. I'm going to give it a feed and water and see how it goes. Not sure if it could be moved? Another lace cap has had autumnal coloured leaves all Summer which looks nice but unusual.

    When you trimmed the Paniculata down to old wood, you stated it would grow new wood from “these buds”, but all I saw were the tops of the old wood where you snipped back to. Where were the buds? Were those cut stems the buds, you mean?

    • @PotsTrowels
      @PotsTrowels  Před 8 měsíci

      The buds would be very small & dormant, but once you prune, they will start to grow in spring. Martin
