This is one of those races that clearly showed Alain Prosts' tactical ability at race, pace, and strategy.

I loved how Alain Prost was quite happy to sit back for so long and just watch everyone else fight it out at the front. He didn’t care about leading every lap. As long as he lead the last lap.

Silverstone was a brilliant example too

@@jrp312 Yes. I just watched that race again the other day. Poor Mansell. He destroyed the field in 91 and 92 at Silverstone tho. That Williams car was a beast.

His race craft was pretty amazing. Just sit back and watch the others trip over themselves and gradually make his move later on when things had settled down.
The other race strategy of that era that worked as effectively was Senna’s which was almost the opposite. Pole position, lead into the first corner and drive off into the distance.
Very different strategies but both deadly effective:

I love those early 90’s Benettons. The Leyton House is beautiful too.

@justAnotherJapanese I agree. The old days of F1 were the best. Alain's tactical abilities were amazing.

I remember watching this race live and thinking....... "why does it sound like it's being broadcast from the Moon?"

Pole, win and fast lap this is the brilliant victory for Alain Prost and Ferrari. I like it.

@Treetop64 I agree. The cars with the wings now a days look goofy. I too enjoy watching my tapes of old F1 races on rainy days. F1 these days is still interesting, but not the same.

  • @Treetop64
    @Treetop64 Před 13 lety +2

Today's F1, with goofy looking wings on the cars and drivers still in diapers, is a joke compared to the heydays of the 80s and 90s.
I try to watch contemporary F1 today but it simply cannot hold my interest. Yet I keep going back to old VCR tapes and CZcams videos to watch the same old classic races over and over again, and keep coming back for more.
I am so grateful that I was able to witness these old races live, as they happened.

At this stage the Ford DFY V8 wasn't a straight line match for the Honda or Ferrari (but it was for the Renault). Come the end of the year it definitely was when Piquet was fastest on the straight in Adelaide.

The French TV coverage was always absolutely appalling in the early 90's - I see this is no exception.
Thanks for the post though, great to see this footage.

  • @starlionblue

How good was the Ferrari that year? Was its competitiveness due to their dream lineup or the chassis/engine? Prost: the Professor - nothing else needs to be said
Mansell: hell, the Italians called him Il Leone
I'd tell Enzo Ferrari it doesn't come any better than that! If I had a F1 team that year, I'd sign up Mansell and Prost, get the best of both worlds in the deal!
