I was 10/11 years old in 1990. I loved watching this Formula 1 season ! The cars looked and sounded so gorgeous ! I miss this era so much !!!
if you get a pair of good headphones and turn up the volume really high it feels like you're there. incredible quality, you've done f1 history buffs a real treat here!
+Brian Mortensen Thanks Brian.........you have to appreciate that this was shot over 25 years ago, but the F1 cars and drivers of the day were truly spectacular and that does come across well in the footage......Im really glad you enjoyed the sound of the '90' F1 cars.............Regards Barry
Spot on! Find the deafening level (that’s what it was) and you are there, got to look after our ears though😅😅😅
Please god can we have this formula of formula 1 back, we need it!
Thats why I dont watch current f1
This is f1 to me
@@cs512tr Me neither. Watched it all my life but stopped about 4. Years ago. Long live this era.
This was such a great time. Beautiful cars, real engines that sang melodies in our ears and last but not least the magic trio, the big three: Senna, Prost and Mansell.
The best era for formula 1 in my opinion. The cars were beautiful and the engines just magic. The best drivers also. None of this crap about the tires and DRS zones. Real passing and racing.
Thank Al............Agree 100%....the sound of these cars was fantastic.......driven by the legends of the sport, especially on the 'old' silverstone layout.........Regards Barry
Plus promotion girls!😍😎
This was the greatest period. There is just nothing that will ever beat the sound of that Ferrari 641/2 - so gorgeous. So cool to see Senna, Prost and Mansell.
Yes agreed the Ferrari 641 was a fantastic sounding race car..........I really enjoyed watching F1 in those days......Regards Barry
In my opinion the Honda v10 is the more tuneful clearer sounding, it chimes as Berger and Senna go down the Hangar straight. That is the most distinctive sound you will ever hear. The Ferrari does sound amazing as well but not as tuneful.
The current Ferrari engine sounds like a defective tractor
The v12 Ferrari sounds magnificent. The v10 McLaren sound great, but not magnificent like the Ferrari v12
5:02 he's pushing on there! Fantastic. So many classic liveries. Lovely sounds too. A simpler time.
Pure speed and guts. The drivers back then were only ever a millisecond away from a career ending smash. No margin for error unlike today, and what a sound!
98daviesm The sound of those cars was amazing.....pure music to my ear's!........Cheers Barry
98daviesm It´s a shame the modern F1 never have the emotion of the old F1 , these drivers have nerves of steel !!
Absolutely amazing footage! Thank you so much for uploading. My first Grand Prix was Silverstone 1991 and I was 13 years old. I was an avid follower during this 1990 season, Senna was my hero, but wasn't Mansell just awesome in that Ferrari too.
The noise of these engines was unreal, we were so very lucky to experience them. The first time I heard them was from walking to the track and then behind the grandstands for the Sunday morning warm up in '91 and I'll never forget it. The noise penetrated your body and entered your soul! Never to leave it!
Senna's commitment @14:07 was stunning to behold here!
I love the different perspectives you got from the various track locations. Amazing!!
The Lamborghini V12 of 1990 sounds different to the Ferrari of the same era (deeper in tone to the higher pitch Ferrari "shriek"), and much like the Honda V12 from 1991 (which was wonderful in itself!). I seem to recall the Lamborghini of '91 onwards sounded more like the Ferrari, maybe down to the exhaust configuration changing the note?!). Each tone is unique and amazing in its own right though!
great real F1 footage, did you notice the "barn door" that Senna dragging around. It just shows you how much power the Honda V10 was making to drag a wing that big, yet still be able to out accelerate the competition without giving up any top speed! Honda engines from this era are legendary!
In 1990, the Honda was probably putting out 80 more bhp than the DFR and Judd V8s. But probably not more than 20bhp more than the Ferrari V12 and Renault V10.
God I miss the sound of these cars. And that Ferrari is just music. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Barry for bringing me back those memories. Different cars´ design, different engines configurations (and sounds). Many DNF´s that would give smaller teams chances to get points. That is what F1 needs today.
Thanks Fabio....Yes it would be nice to see some of the smaller teams be more competitive in todays F1.....the sound of the 90's cars was amazing..........regards Barry
Wonderful sounds. The low, raspy V8s; nasty and loud V10s and the screaming V12s. Tell me, what was wrong with this formula? The choice of cylinder configuration with displacement limit was fantastic.
Totally agree, if it ain't broke don't fix it!.....these cars were fantastic......fast and amazing sound.....a few of the modern tweeks and you would have a great premier class in single seater Motorsport........Cheers Barry
The problem is that manufacturers don't want to develop racing engines that have little or nothing in common with road car engines. Several countries in Europe are on the verge of completely banning internal combustion engines, which is not an environment where a manufacturer would like to spend hundreds of millions of whatever currency developing an internal combustion engine.
I'll definitely miss the F1 of the past, and it's a shame that it's gone, but sadly the world doesn't seem to miss it.
Matt P v8 hard lower power but was good on fuel. V10 was a compromise. V12 was bad on fuel but great for power.
@@Tuppoo94 At this point, fuck the manufacturers and let real racing teams in, simplify everything and start over from a more basic state lol. I'd rather they do that instead of continuing the path they're on.
Nothing was wrong. Within 5-6 years every engine manufacturer had organically gone to V10s, including Ferrari. By then R&D was more deterministic and they knew that you inherently couldn't win with a V8 or V12. It was the best performance compromise no matter how open the rules were. When that happened it was a no-brainer cost saving device to lop off two cylinders; the engines were cheaper, lighter and sounded close enough to the V10s. Since the manufacturer wars of the 00s, prices have increased enough that everyone wants some sort of parity for their multi-billion dollar investment so now we get agreed upon formulas.
All I can say is thank you for this rare footage. The sound and flybys you captured are amazing I can't believe I am getting to see and hear all these cars because I was born after this era ended.
It must have been really special to see this in person. I ask myself, why cant formula 1 go back to a formula more like this? Going to a race nowadays must be quite anti climatic!
Thank you Jj, Yes I Just loved the sound of these cars and they were fast!.....it would be good to have the same F1 sounds at today's F1 races but not to be....hopefully they may change in the future and get back to some spectacular cars and engines like the ones in the video........glad you enjoyed the footage.
Regards Barry
Thanks you for this upload. I can watch this over and over again. F1 in it's best form with all the iconic names together. And the screaming of the engines....goosebumps!
Really superb footage man! Thanks for uploading this! 14'05", bam, perfect line! Also noticed, the 90's Lambo V12 sounds actually the same like the 91 Honda V12. Nice!
Wow!! Brings back memories. I was 12 in 1990 and my brother took us up for the GP between 1989 and 95. We were sat at Copse in 1990 on race day and this footage makes me feel like I'm back there!! :-)
Not many videos can make a person feel as though they are right there witnessing an event. This video masterfully accomplishes that. Of course, the cars, sounds, drivers and old Silverstone are pure magic. No wonder that legions of F1 fans miss that era. I am skeptical about 'progress.' Things truly were better then. What is sad is that there is no turning back. What great memories, however. Thanks for posting!
Thanks For your comments Jay.......I agree and it was a great era in Formula 1..........the sound of these cars makes the difference for me.........Regards Barry
This is fabulous. Later in that year I went to Spa and this brings back all the different engine sounds. How different things were back then to now 😂🤔
Thanks for your comment SJ......they were awesome at a track like spa....fabulous sounds....Regards Barry
Brilliant. Before the cars became truck sized and homogenised and quiet, and Silverstone was still epic. Full grids. So much more exciting.
I wish F1 would go back to normally aspirated Engines V10's V12's nd V'8's the sounds were awesome,
Lovely Barry thanks. Before the massive corporate gig we have today and still mostly motor sport fans who followed other formulas/touring cars etc i feel. Was there, quite easy to get in and while busy the pricey grandstands were half empty as your footage shows. The 89/90 cars sounded glorious and the small front wing and smaller tyres looks great imho. Mansellmania really hung over the track and its a shame his two years there didnt elecit more...the tifossi didn't care though, they thought he did all he could.....great colour and audio footage 🎉
real F1 cars and drivers :)
Ferrari..fabulous sound!!!
+Franco Buono Yes the best sounding car on the Grid................thanks Barry
V12
You are not lying lol
Wow! Thanks for sharing I was there and if I knew then how much I'd miss it I wouldn't of even looked away to open my sandwiches.. golden days
Absolutely wonderful video footage of these racing gods and their beastly machines. Your footage shows how much these guys were clinging on to those appex's and pushing the limits. Quite brilliant. Man if only I had a time machine.
Can't believe this is gone....
Devastated....
“I accept every time I get in my car there's 20% chance I could die” - Niki Lauda; Now that's probably less than
Fantastic video, expertly filmed. You must have had a top-spec video camera at that time. What an era, we'll never see days like this again. Memories of early 90's Silverstone, going with my dad. And as a 7 year old boy, I was completely in awe.
Thanks Daryl......yes I had a Sony Mini8 video camera and it was pretty good considering this video was shot 27 years ago!........and fortunately it recorded sound really well too..........Regards Barry
Spectacular footage!
Once again Barry excellent footage at Silverstone . love the look of the early 90s f1s. my god that Williams at 5.03 great car control. i previously commented under Robin Banks my nephews account on the f1 test days brands hatch 1986 video
cheers mate an keep it up
Thanks Ergun.......still great cars after the 'Turbo Era'.......very quick and the sound of those cars was terrific.........it was worth a trip to Silverstone just to hear the Ferrari 641 of Mansell and Prost......great entertainment from Formula 1 back then.......Cheers Barry
Ergun Uzdilli I think that was Thierry Boutsen at 5:03. Another good driver who never got the recognition he deserved, as was the case with more than a few drivers back in the day. It's good seeing so much of Alessandro Nannini as well, particularly since this was unfortunately his last year in Formula One, owing to a helicopter accident later in the season a week after the Spanish Grand Prix in which his right forearm was severed. He did still continue to race in other series, quite successfully, with slight modifications made to his cars to facilitate use of his prosthesis.
+Johnson Steele Williams decided to bring Mansell back when they started thinking that they could get more out of the car. Apparently Theirry liked a stiffly sprung setup while Mansell liked to make it work with a softer, more responsive setup, especially in the front-end of the car. Williams suspicions were confirmed when Mansell improved the car's performance by 2.5 seconds at Paul Ricard driving a tweeked 1990 Williams during the first test following the 1990 season.
I liked Bousten, I thought he was a pretty good driver and I know that he is a nice guy. He was a good friend of Ayrton Senna and I was fortunate enough to find Ayrton and Theirry walking around the track when most of the action was in the garages . Of course I managed to snag their autographs. They were both really nice and spoke with us for a few minutes. It was pretty cool, as it was just me and a couple of my track buddies.
One of the most mythlogical seasons ever.
#Bringthesoundback
0:46 Mansell looks right at the camera.
This was my first Grand Prix ever attended. I am surprised the sound does not show the popping or backfiring as they enter a turn or exiting. This is all I heard!.. I suppose this was an honour as Nigel, threatened his retirement, only to be pounced on by Frank Williams!... A falling out with Prost and Mansell that year!....
+David Camel thanks David.....yes I think most of the time on this video the cars are on the 'Gas' and there was not much footage at the slow corner were you would get the popping and banging of the over run.....the woodcote chicane was the slowest part of the track in those days...everywere else was basically flat chat!.....Mansells Ferrari sounded amazing one of the best sounding cars in F1....ever!.............cheers Barry
+David Camel Mansell had a lot of reliability problems in 1990 but at Silverstone, despite the dnf, he was brilliant. His pole lap here at Silverstone was of the stuff that legends are made of. He was untouchable and led much of the race until the mechanical issues took their toll.
It is not strange that Mansell had mechanical issues, he was known to be hard on cars. Prost won races and his car and tyres were fine for a lot longer, that is one of the reasons Prost was so much better than Mansell, Senna and most of the other drivers at the time
I was there that day! Keep looking for myself in the crowd as I took the same route round as Barry did. I also have a vid of it and must dig it out & post some day. F1 & Silverstone at their peak then I feel! 👍🏻 Great sound & good photography dude! 😄
Proper engine noise, can feel the power. Thanks for posting Barry.
Superb !!
I was at Silverstone that glorious weekend and this brings it all back perfectly.
Great work
+Anthony Papworth Thanks Anthony..............the old 'silverstone' was a classic fast track and it was good to get some F1 footage when the cars and drivers were flat out and furious!..........regards Barry
Thank you for the video. Takes me back to my childhood and the racing heroes of the time.
Barry, you Sir are a LEGEND. Hope you (and yours) are (all) very well. Just wanted to say a huuugggeeee THANK YOU for all your videos and the memories they stir. Amazing footage.
Many Thanks P.Mid....glad you enjoyed the footage.......regards Barry
HERO, WHAT HAPPENED IN 1987, AND 1988 WHEN I STARTED WATCHING F1. IM BROKEN HEARTED. ⊙⊙
Hi Nonsoun10...........After the Formula 1 Grand Prix was taken away from Brands Hatch I only did a couple of trips to Silverstone to watch F1.............Silverstone 'Old Circuit' was still a classic flat out race track in those days.........I haven't been to many GP's since that time, but I enjoyed the sound of these cars in 1990..........Cheers Barry
14:07 Wow!
Yes Senna through 'Club' corner flat in 5th gear then flat through 'Abbey' in 6th...........it dosen't get much better!......glad you enjoyed it Frederico...........Regards Barry
Fantastic video with the epic sounds of real F1 cars!!
This brings back memories of the only F1 event I've had the privilege to attend.., the year before, 1989, final qualifying at Silverstone as a 13 year old. I so wish that I could have witnessed F1 first hand more often, but the fact that I got to see my hero Mansell, in a Ferrari, and Senna and Prost, at one of the truly great motor racing circuits in the world...
Well, if you could only see F1 action once, I'm very very grateful to have experienced that wonderful moment in F1 history
You saw a Golden Era in F1 Vanduc, all the legendary Drivers in some amazing cars on the 'Old' Silverstone Circuit.......It dosen't get any better...........Regards Barry
Who needs porn when you can watch and hear this!!??
Back in the Days when EVERY Car had his own Sound.
Today in F1 and also DTM they all Sound the same.
cough WRC cough
Theres more excitement in this than the last 10 years of F1 rip
The chap who filmed this deserves a knighthood.
I was at this race for this weekend. My memories are tingling :)
Hi Tony....well maybe your should call me Sir Barry Price.......lol.......Glad you enjoyed the footage, one thing I was very pleased about was the sound recording of these cars aswell as the actual visual footage.......great era back in the day.....the Ferrari's of Mansell & Prost was awesome.........Regards Barry
@@BarryPrice1959
Absolutely wonderful Sir Barry.
Just superb.
Please keep this on here.
♥️♥️
Wonderful footage - thanks.
Brings back lots of memories. I managed to get quite sunburned that weekend!
Thanks Chap....Even the weather used to be good back then!....cheers Barry
Wow! Thank you for sharing this amazing footage!
blue9ty Thanks Blue, great sound and F1 cars at the fastest circuit in the World, the old circuit at Silverstone was a great track.............cheers Barry
Awesone video! Great to hear the diversity of engines sounds and the raw power and beautiful looks the cars had at that time....Great to see Mansell get on it at 2.02!
Many Thanks.........great sounding car at Silverstone.....especially Mansell's Ferrari..........cheers Barry
Those Ferraris... take my breath away at 15.00... I wasn't there that year for the GP but I was at the tyre testing earlier on. Incredible times
Thanks so much for uploading this.
+Keegan Glad you enjoyed the sight and sound of F1 on the old Silverstone Circuit Keegan...........regards Barry
This video footage is a gem to keep. Very good stuff. But I'm also seeing comparison comments about post and modern day F1. They are completely different, with different agendas, different objectives and as formula 1 fans, I think it's just best to embrace the changes within the sport. This is all for the sustainability and viewership of F1.
Thanks Shanwarrior, It was good to have some F1 footage from the 'Old' silverstone circuit which was super fast........yes I get what you are saying about comparison with todays F1.......can't really compare but the cars in the video make for spectacular viewing.........regards Barry
awesome video !!!
enjoyement of my ears ..
Ayrton
Magic, Thank you.
I was there for the '88 British GP. Soaked.
Thank you thank you thank you for posting this! Pure, unadulterated magic:))
Thanks Sam, Coming from a Professional racing driver of your caliber really means something and im glad you enjoyed the footage from Silverstone (Old Circuit).........kind of makes your hairs on the back of your neck stand up! watching some of the 'Legends' of the sport in some amazing F1 cars round the ultra quick Silverstone Circuit.......the sounds these cars made added hugely to the 'Experience' of watching F1, hope that some day we will hear this kind of F1 car again...........all the best Regards Barry
Great video. Thanks for sharing. You can clearly see the difference in speed between the contenders and the also-rans
Dude....... Thank you. This is as real as it's gonna get. And for a formula 1 race this seems to have a bit more of a grassroots feel to it
Love the footage from a spectators point of view. It really shows the speed. Brilliant.
Thanks Paul.......most circuits have alot more fences around them these days........regards Barry
I was there in person as a litter picker. We had access to all areas including the paddock. I remember being on the old Copse Corner when Mansells Ferrari broke down. At the time the relationship with the team was severely broken. He parked the car up threw his fireproof mask and his gloves into the crowd.
In the paddock he was so annoyed he points blank refused to talk to anyone even the press. Except for one lad in a wheelchair who he stopped to sign his programme. He then scampered off and that was the last we saw of him.
I managed to get Alain Prost's autograph and very close to Senna for a picture. Senna was annoyed that day and wasn't really signing autographs or allowing pictures.
Thanks so much for this treasure, mate!!
Thanks Joshua.........those cars made an amazing sound on the very fast 'Old' Silverstone Circuit....glad you enjoyed the footage..........Regards Barry
Wow, what an experience. The sound of that Ferrari - just breathtaking.
Yes the sound of the Ferrari was sensational!.......Regards Barry
Great video. When Fi looked & sounded GOOD!!
To my surprise I seen myself in the video. Couple of close ups of my face sorry I probably ruined you filming
Great to see yourself after all these years.....it was a great era in F1 back then and spectacular around the silverstone 'Old' circuit......Regards Barry
The Lamborghini in the lotus sounds phenomenal
From back in the days when I use to watch F1.
Lotus with a beautiful Lamborghini v12 sound
wow this is great thank you!
+Brian Gildea Thanks Brian, Great sound of these cars add to the video.........'stella' era in F1............Cheers Barry
This video is absolutely incredible.
+Marc Ainley Thank You mark
No problem. My Dad's been to every British Grand Prix since the early 70s so a few of your videos bring back the memories.
RIGHT ON .. on ALL Gentleman !!!! 👍👍👍 and also more than one driver could win races and the championship
The greatest period...When the formula 1 was formula 1...
Mansell so quick through Copse!!
Ferrari sounds amazing...looks great too
reds005 Yes I agree the Ferrari of Mansell and Prost sound fantastic.......the best sounding cars out of them all....cheers Barry
That Ferrari sounded incredible. These cars were true monsters
Really marvelous Barry, and as I've stated before this view from the "real peoples" perspective gives a very special view of the sight, sound and down-right scent of world class motor racing and it's cars and drivers...unfortunately not as we see today.
That's Lunar, you make a great point about my footage, its from the public areas in with the rest of the crowd and its good to see the action from that perspective.......super racing in great sounding machines.....was a special time in F1.......as you say not quite the same these days,......regards Barry
pretty nice weather back in 1990.
great video
+Ronald Simonis Thank You Ronald.........Regards Barry
What i ever said: The Ferrari V12 in high tourings was the most sexy sound in F1 ever!
It was a special sound....best F1 Sound for me....Regards Barry
The monstrosity of that Lola f1 with the W judd engine. Good lord! XD
The Sound! THE SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing video! Qualifying session? I see the Onyx.
I was there watch Nigel mansell getting pole position amazing days not like today's F1 utterly boring 🏎
Yes with you on that Nigel.......proper cars and drivers making some sweet sounds.......that was the F1 I loved.....Cheers Barry
I was there too that day with my dad this brings back good memories when F1 was Great! 😌
I was there too also most of the European races, now f1 I whould rather sit and watch the fire go out
Who won the race?
Same here was at Bridge corner all that weekend it was fantastic. Nothing can compare to hearing them in person.
Back in the days before a 17 year old could just step in and race.
Hi David............yes it was not possible to get a seat in F1 at 17 in those days..........even a talent Like Senna had to go through the lower formula like Formula Ford then Formula 3 before they would be considered by an F1 Team.........if you have the Money now you can buy a seat in an F1 Car now days.........cheers Barry
Treetop64 Careful about the gold teeth - check Enzo Ferrari himself!
Barry Price Karts, Formula Ford, Formula 3, [Formula 2 if you weren't brilliant], a season or two in a lesser F1 team, and then, finally, a phone call from Enzo, Colin, Frank, Ron, or Bernie, admitting you to a great team… So different from the 'buy a drives' of today!
There's always been the odd teenager who got to F1. Thackwell, Rodriguez, Amon (if I remember rightly), Alonso. If there's anything that makes it easier now, it's probably the existence of very accurate simulators. Great video, anyway - as someone who remembers being there at the age of 12 - watching qualifying from Woodcote, I'd half forgotten just how stunning that Ferrari 641 was.
Kaoru Matsouka Senna was also a pat driver lmfao
An Irish driver who out-performed him had no money and had difficulty getting a seat
The armchair is strong with this thread
Oh to be young again
12:57 Larrouse - Lamborghini V12
Sound !!!!
I was stood just by bridge corner at this race, couldn't believe how amazing the cars sounded, that ferrari V12 was something else, still second to the Renault RS3/4 though
Agreed Matt, the sound was amazing from the cars in those days.......i think it adds so much to Formula 1 when the cars sound so good.............regards Barry
Oh yes, I remember going to Silverstone watching Mansell, Prost and Senna doing this driving thing known as Formula 1. What happened to that?😮
That 641 gets me soaking wet every single time..
Yes fantastic!
Thanks jraybay........the 1990 cars were great sounding machines also....especially around the 'Old' very fast Silverstone Circuit.......Cheers Barry
Witnessing a live GP anywhere in that era...You must have done something right.
2007/08 British grand prix was special too. The sound from the v10/v8s rattled my ribcage
A driver on the limit at 14:05

the sound....
the v10 from McLaren and Williams and the v12 from ferrari are just awesome
Thanks bZ....yes especially the Ferrari!........magic.....Regards Barry
Barry Price hahaha cheers mate
I was standing at becketts on race day that year
Awesome place to watch.
Renault V10 with the Same sound since 89 untill 94

Yes that would be fine ......regards Barry

@@TurbosTantrums yes it is my footage drop me a link to your video I would like to see it.......regards Barry
I was there on race day, what an experience the sounds etc. Mansell should have won, but prost did.
This wasn't too long before Martin Donnelly's crash. Probably the most shocking image I have ever seen in F1 is him lying on the track still strapped to his seat...
As good as it gets.
Hakkinen in the Lotus, Big Mo in the Leyton House, great stuff!
jstoli996c4s yes great sights and sounds of some super F1 action on the 'Fast, Flat out Silverstone circuit..........Cheers Barry
jstoli996c4s Just a comment, he is not Mika actually, he is Derek Warwick in the Lotus Lambo V12, although their helmet designs have some similarities. Hakkinen's debut was next year 1991.
Ah, thanks for the clarification. Warwick was another really good driver from that era.
I was waiting for the infamous team Life car. But then I realised they never got through pre-qualifying. ;-) Do you have the pre-qualifying footage aswell?
+SuperMafia8 No Im affraid not.......I only filmed qualifying on the Saturday...........thanks Barry
+Pavel I saw the Life car in Montreal, it was a disaster, but I'm glad that I saw it!
