Wikipedia: The aircraft crashed at Higher Shelf Stones on the Bleaklow moorland plateau near Glossop in Derbyshire on 3 November 1948. The aircraft was on a routine daytime flight with two other aircraft, leaving RAF Scampton near Lincoln at about 10:15 and heading to the US Air Force base at Burtonwood near Warrington. The pilot Captain Landon Tanner and co-pilot Captain Harry Stroud were flying by instruments as the area was covered in low cloud. Based on the flight time, the crew believed it had passed the hills and began to descend. At about 11:00 the aircraft hit the ground at 610m above sea level, 300m north east of the summit of Higher Shelf Stones and it was engulfed in flames. All 11 crew and 2 military passengers perished in the crash. When the aircraft failed to arrive at the Burtonwood airbase, the nearby RAF Mountain Rescue Service was called to search for the missing aircraft. Already on a training exercise upon the Kinder Scout moors, the RAF Harpur Hill rescue team headed to Bleaklow and located the crash site at about 16:30, by which time the light was fading. The debris of the aircraft was scattered with only the tail section intact. The recovery of the occupants took place the following morning and their bodies were taken to Burtonwood. The aircraft was carrying the $7,400 wages for the Burtonwood airbase. The money survived the fire and was recovered at the crash site by the American Military Police.

They werent lost as such , they decended slightly too early , Bleaklow was the last hill between them and their destination USAF Burtonwood , they almost made it but fate played it's hand .

Hi Gordon and Simon, what a great video brings back memories of going with my father to visit the sight of a crashed plane from WWII just off the beaten track near The Old Man of Coniston, really sticks in my mind.
I never been to the Peak District but I've walked almost every inch with Patrick Dickinson (virtually) so I think I recognise some of those landmarks like the waterfall. If you've not seen his videos then well worth watching every one of them.
Gordon I would definitely take your son out there, get him into the scouts if you can, if there is an active group. Another hike I remember doing with my Dad was the Snowden Horseshoe, starting with Cribb Goch, well worth looking out the latest videos on that from Jack a Snacks. Not for the light hearted, looking back I'm amazed that we did it, neither of us had much if any mountain experience back then.
Inspired by the above and others on CZcams including yourselves I've pushed myself to get out and do some exploring and I've found some amazing things which I had previously just walked by without paying enough attention, including quite a few railway related things. Eventually I may put some of this into CZcams but at the moment I publish on Inst ... a ... gram (just in case CZcams deletes me).
Look forward to seeing your next adventure. All the best and good luck from Spain!!

Great video Gordon! I was walking in the Brecon Beacons with some friends last year and we stumbled upon the mangled wreckage of a Vickers Wellington bomber that crashed in 1944. It was very similar to this although we got soaked getting there.

Nice piece of wreckage that once was the plane which crashed to the ground. Interesting piece of history that how the UK went to war during the 1st and 2nd World War. Very good 👍

Come on Gordon found it lol , seriously though it is an amazing site when you first come accross it , parts of it are still shiny as if it happened recently , not a place to be in the mist , there is wreckage from a c47 skytrain ( Dakota) not two far away and also a lancaster that crashed into james's thorn , the dark peak is littered with aircraft wrecks .
