  • From Blackpool Central to Lytham in this second exciting documentary I visit the area of Squires Gate Railway Station on the South Fylde Line near Blackpool. The line still sees trains running albeit once an hour but this line has so many stories to let go and share.
    Featuring local author Peter Fitton, Blackpool & Fylde Rail Users Association Paul Nettleton, retired signalman Jack Harrison and Chair of the South Fylde Line Community Partnership Tony Ford.

    So good you have captured this history. All this can so easily disappear forever, sadly many people don't seem interested in preserving this. 😞

    Thanks for a great video Gordon - brings back some memories . As a child in the 50's my family lived almost opposite the old station building in Lytham; I remember it well, shame it wasn't preserved. I used to travel to school in Blackpool by train, then onward by no 16 bus; and sometimes ring the changes on the way home by catching the tram from Devonshire Square to Talbot Square and walking down the prom to Central. One thing I seem to remember about Central is that there was a very old stationary boiler alongside the track, used to raise steam to heat carriages in the excursion sidings . If my memory serves me correctly the boiler came from an old L & Y engine way back when but I could be wrong !

    A really great video, thanks for sharing. My Great Grandfather was station master at St Anne's over 100 years ago and I grew up only 200 yards from the signal box that controlled the sidings at Dock Road, Lytham. Many happy memories of trainspotting there, playing in the remains of the old station building and seeing the excursion trains from east Lancashire towns during wakes week

    Thanks for another very interesting video - thanks Gordon. I'm pleased to have helped.. And done around Jack's 63rd Birthday; the old ***! Haha. Very happy days down there. It would have been especially interesting, with the old 'Fly over' route to Central, which started from behind the site of the former P-way Spoil sidings, at Kirkham Nth Junction.
    I can say, that I enjoyed EVERY day of my time at BR..

    Great documentary Nodrog. There were some great stories that were included in there and each story told a different aspect of the railway which I liked. Also, it's nice that you are doing the history on your local line as well. Keep the documentaries coming because they are so interesting of watch.

    Bit of info for you Gordon. The Ormskirk to Preston service forms the Preston to Blackpool South service yet if you try and book a ticket from Ormskirk, Rufford or Croston to anywhwere beyond Preston leading to the South Fylde line it instructs you to leave at Preston and wait for an hour as the system assumes you can't make the connection in good time...but it's the same train. Northern are missing a trick here as people from West Lancs don't realise they can get to the south fylde as quickly as they can. Yes the return is not a direct train as it forms the train to Colne but the wait isn't too long at Preston. Another missed opportunity from Northern

    • @tonyford5551
      @tonyford5551 Před 3 lety

      Its been mentioned to Northern on lots of occasions. Its due to something in timetable planning that there has to be a minimum amount of time allowed to change trains/meet connections.

    • @benzinapaul7416
      @benzinapaul7416 Před 3 lety

      @@tonyford5551 I fully understand this is the reason why but it strikes me as a 'computer says no' lack of of common sense approach. Luckily many residents I know in Croston are aware of this and use the train to get to Lytham, St Annes and the Blackpool South direct

    Well worth the wait! Really great footage and fascinating stories of the line. The signalman is a proper character. Could have done with a few more maps as I haven't lived in Blackpool that many years. Blackpool Central was an extraordinary place... makes me wonder what happened and what possessed them to demolish it. Like I know people talk about foreign travel etc. but where did all those people go?

    Wonderful documentary. Hope to see more of you documentaries on your channel Nodrog. Including the landscape and history of the railways in the North of England. Also are there any plans to upgrade the South Flyde Line to become double track with possible electrification and to allow the Class 331 Civity and other EMUs to use the South Flyde Line. Or will DMU trains still be used including the Class 195 Civity.

    As a train spotter back in the day I was heartbroken when Blackpool Central closed.
    I have know idea if this is true but the rumours at the time were that the plan was to close Blackpool North and Central was closed in error.
