Who ever gets tired of seeing the Mitch-slapped expressions of these reactors? Not me! So glad to see someone who appreciates the genius that is Pentatonix.
I LOVE the Mitch-slapped faces!! They can be so hilarious!! I’ve seen some double-takes that could cause whiplash...lol
Yeah, and he hasn't heard anything yet when it comes to Mitch ROFL
ok first I love how many people use Mitch-slapped. it's like... one of my favorite words now.. and it's also so true. like, I love watching these reactions.. just to see people lose their shit when everything goes quiet.. and mitch does his thing.
@@natashasullivan4559 have been watching reactions to this forever and just heard the phrase Mitch-slapped a few days ago. Too funny. Also, noone ever commented on the lighting before. Learned something new
Speaking of lighting… notice how the sun sets just as the song ends?
And while we’re talking camera work, when Avi sings : “her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya” they cut to a close up of Kirsten.
The director of this video really knew what (s)he was doing!
I stopped everything, EVERYTHING, for this reaction.
Literally me
Same
I ALWAYS love the Mitch slap when people first hear Mitch Grassi's voice (the guy in the hat). Mitch is a countertenor... his vocal range is crazy big and he can sing all the way into the soprano. He has the voice of an angel!
i love watching people get mitch slapped
Actually Mitch isn't a tenor. I know we're conditioned to the idea that adult males are either tenor or bass, but Mitch is the ULTRA rare adult male alto. The man doing the reaction refers to him as a 'tenor altino', but if you listen to Mitch's natural speaking voice the timber is clearly alto. He can stretch 'down' into the mid-tenor range, but he can 'full voice' all the way to top of alto and range well up into the soprano range without going 'full head' and easily without having to 'dip' falsetto. Damn near unique honestly. Avi is also quite rare being a 'basso profundo', but not quite the 'near unicorn' of Mitch. The fact they have both of them and world class vocalists in their own right in Kirsti and Scott both having wide range with great breath and tone control. Kevin is just a beat-boxing god as well as an incredible instrumentalist (obviously doesn't do that with Pentatonix) and can sing with a light but pleasant tenor. The fact they assembled this collection of talent and skill into a single group? Historic.
@@guiwhiz971-3816 p l pp
It makes my heart soar when they are all belting at the top of their lungs and remain in perfect harmony and on equal vocal standing.
The Mitch slap never disappoints…
Watching people get Mitch slapped never gets old!!!!!!!
Haa brilliant 👌🏼😊
I'm Mitch slappin' myself for not thinking of that,...solid.
Loving the Mitch slap. Hilarious. Member back when it happened to me.
I always look for that Mitch slap. I love it. I love Mitch I love them all. The passion they put into it and the joy it makes my day.
Definitely not a college group. They have been together for 10 years as a group. They have won 3 Grammys and multiple other awards.
Lol definitely not.
He's talking about the style I'm pretty sure not literally
@@noi3ody246 when i heard them they reminded me of a Collegiate a cappella Group, Guess I Shouldve Worded it better...
@@MrLboydReacts you should react to their version of queens Bohemian Rhapsody
@@MrLboydReacts I didn't feel your description was demeaning at all - they did sing in school together ;-)
I could listen to this every day for the rest of my life- absolutely amazing.
My absolute favorite is their rendition of Mary Did You Know?
It's absolutely incredible
Pentatonix is not an a capella group, they are THE a capella group that has redefined a capella for the whole music industry! Welcome down the rabbit hole! Their catalog of 10 years is wide & deep!
Love that Karen!! So true!
Agree. They are the gold standard.
Perfectly stated! I think that they are probably in the top five artists to come out of the tv singing competition shows in terms of overall success (not being overly familiar with all of them), alongside Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson, and the only non-American Idol contestants on the list. I remember when they got their first Grammy nomination, Entertainment Weekly had an article headlined, “Grammy nods: The Sing-Off: 1, The Voice: 0.” And that was after TSO was canceled by NBC.
Respect!
Agreed
World renowned professional a cappella. They are the cream of the crop.
Just take it in brother! Let the chills run up and down your spine and your scalp tingle and your souls sing. And when you cry just let it happen. Then listen to EVERYTHING they ever did! Especially Jolene with Dolly!
Joleen!!! Yes!
Do you listen to “Walking Off the Earth”…. Aka.. WOTE. They are phenomenal as well. But spoiler alert the baritone guy later passed away. I cried so much over his passing, they are still unbelievable artist.
This song by this group is my GO TO for my bipolar depression. It brings me to my knees every time. I remember I AM NEVER ALONE
Same!
@@maryhy22They bring me back from depresión crisis...try Mary did you know...this one makes me feel not alone, like this does to you.😂
I agree 100% with you. I have a lot of down moments with my bipolar depression and this song always pulls me through.
Same here. Also Mary did you know, Say Something and Thank you are always helping me when I'm in Bipolar Depression.
Love the Mitch Face when he starts the high counter tenor solo.
LOL .... have heard it called getting Mitch Slapped the first time people hear him 😂
I knew he was going to do that, I could not wait. LOL
Just a year or so before his passing, Mr. Cohen said Pentatonix's rendition/cover was the best ever done of his song.
Agreed
I'm not here to pick a fight, and there's no doubt that this version is incredible, but I'm pretty sure he said the same thing about the K.D.Lang version. Perhaps he heard K D before PTX?
Thank you so much for adding that!
@@irabourstein I'll give PTX the nod for a group, and KD Lang for an individual. Her rendition can take one to their knees.
You can't compare a solo artist from a group. Different textures, very different feel. Kd langs is one of my favorites to be sure, but with a group the sound is richer because there's chords in voices, it's like a single speaker over double speaker sound. And we forget one of the best artists who covered this before ptx or kd. Jeff Buckley. Rip. But Cohen did say the ptx version was the best
Her voice is angelic. That's what's up.
This came up in my feed. Their voices, what it is, they make you feel. The pain, the love, the joy, the sadness, everything. They make you feel.
"Oh! they all sing" best reaction ever to pentatonix!
There is no such word as ‘altino’. Don’t make shit up so people will actually believe you’re a professional.
Probably a counter tenor
@@gregbolin651 Tenor altino is a term for a tenor who can sing in the treble range without falsetto. It’s a synonym for countertenor. Maybe you should try looking things up before you accuse someone else of being ignorant.
@@cockathiel5319 I’ll concede if you can define “falsetto” without referencing what it’s NOT. While we’re at it, define “treble” range without using “notes covered by the treble clef”, which are used be regular old tenors on a daily basis. And if there’s already a ‘synonym’ that’s been in use for centuries, why make up another term?
@@gregbolin651 - Falsetto is defined by where in the body the primary resonance occurs. Mitch can get quite high without leaving "chest voice" - but then he has some really high notes once he leaves his chest-resonance voice behind. Kirstie can do that too.
Kevin Olusola is also the most gifted beat boxer on the planet who can also sing and play cello. You'll be even more amazed if you watch their video of "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Bohemian Rhapsody is spectacular.
it BLEW ME AWAY for sure!!
He can actually play multiple instruments and composes his own songs as well. I swear he's a musical genius
he is 100% not the most gifted beatboxer on the planet. He might be the best in an acapella group but there are dozens of better beatboxers.
-MB14
-Reeps One
-KRNFX
-Tom Thum
-Dharni

2024. Rabbithole of music. This came up. Awesome reaction. Great song. Much love
Mary did u know is there absolute best vocals
I live for "real" first time Pentatonix reactions. When you see someone experience the amazing talent of this group for the first time, it is so rewarding.
For me, it's Pavarotti. But these guys are close. Not as many tears.
@@Kim.Miller For you maybe. This song has some deep personal meaning for me so it's very hard for me to stay dry-eyed when I hear it.
I was the same way. This song introduced me to them
I wish he would do Tom McDonald...
@@Kim.Miller I'm no expert on either, but I would give them the edge for beauty, and him for passion Just my opinion.
Pentatonix - Daft Punk you will thank me later.
Upvote this!! I HAVE to see this man's reaction to daft punk....that and bohemian rhapsody.
And Can't Hold Us come to think of it.
@@ummmmduh omg YES YES YES!!!!!
It won their first Grammy! $200 and done in a closet. Amazing!!❤
A simultaneous Millinery and Mitch Slap. Perfection.
Pentatonix won the third season of The Sing-Off when the three youngest were 19 years old. Saw them live 12 years ago in Chicago & they were AMAZING!!!
Avi's voice makes me think of a really good hot chocolate, his tone is so rich and warm.
I knew that your Mitch face would not disappoint😆
Was waiting on it.
when she sang the word that came to my mind was "genuine".
You know what Pentatonix song you should react to next...yep any will work.
Gold comment
This video has been viewed 613 MILLION times! They won Season 3 of the Sing-Off in 2011.
Their harmonies just get better...
I was waiting for you to cry. Waiting for you to just stop stopping and just listen. Close your eyes and just FEEL it. Then, you’ll cry.
Wait til you find out that Kevin invented "Cello-boxing" featured in the "Radioactive" collaboration with Lindsey Stirling. If you like this kind of arrangement, "Mary Did You Know?" was fantastic. Among acapella groups, Pentatonix and Home Free are typically regarded as the best of the larger genre.
Leonard Cohen was the most singularly talented poet-songwriter of the last century. This song actually contains seven full verses, and the last two contain some of the most powerful lyrics humans have ever created. It's nothing less than a tragedy that no one ever includes them.
I think Tom waits is also up there with him. Although Tom is more of a poet.
I agree with you 100% Leonard was ridiculously talented. Having said that, the original recording of Hallelujah by LC wasn't my fav version by far, but everything we hear here is only here because of the great talent that was LC.
@@NicolaMM Nice! I just love the creative process. The only things that we humans create is thought because everything else that we have built is built on things that already exist. So I just love the creative process as it's originality in its purest form.
Originally there were supposed to be 84 verses
My top 3 are Nick Cave, Leanard Cohen and Tom Waits.
Fantastic vocals. The change of words are throwing me off.
I wouldn't say stop stopping. Your commentary is spot-on. Thank you
Not even close to college accapella . These are professionals of the highest quality
Here's what I loved about this video. All these people were of different backgrounds, creeds and skin color yet they are all bound by their talents and love of music.
(and gender)
To me, those differences don't matter at all but I see what you mean. I just love how skilled they are and their dedication to creating music. A cappella is so freaking cool and these people have seemingly mastered it!
This song always brings me to tears for some reason...
Once again, we see that classic expression when Mitch's voice is realized..
The first guy is Scott Hoying (baritone). His voice is soulful. The second guy (beard and beanie) is Avi Kaplan (pronounced Aahh vee) and his tone sounds different perhaps because he is typically the bass. His voice is full of emotion and warmth and he has an amazing range. Next is Kirstie Maldonado mezzo soprano and her voice is light and angelic. Mitch Grassi (in the hat) is the countertenor. His voice quality is so beautiful and unique. Guaranteed to blow your socks off. Last but definitely not least is the beat boxer extraordinaire and also a tenor Kevin Olusola. Probably the most talented of all. Thanks for your reaction. I hope you will check out Daft Punk (their first Grammy win), Imagine and Bohemian Rhapsody. The PTX fans(Pentaholics) are the best and they will support you on your journey.
When fans are so supportive of new people discovering their long time passion, you know it's the artists worth following, and the communities worth joining.
They are really perfection....each one of them......I also love the country acapella group Home Free....
First time seeing this group. Truly amazing. Thank you for the break down of each person.
Love seeing people’s reactions on their face when they first hear Mitch’s(guy with the large brim hat)voice I like referring to it as being “Mitch slapped”
My man gets so emotional and deep. Love it.
My daughter turned me onto Pentatonix when she was a teenager. Love their harmony.
Welcome to the world of Pentatonix. I don't think I have seen a bad performance from PTX.

Saw them live! EPIC!! Especially their version of Bohemian Rhapsody!!! Their very BEST SONG!!
They do THE best renditions of Little Drummer Boy & Mary Did You Know. They are incredible.
Voctave did a better version of Mary Did You Know. But it's close. Voctave cheated and had the songwriter perform with them.
I love their Mary did you know and the Drummer boy is my favorite

The second singer is Avi, who sadly had to leave the group due to the pressures of the touring. He's probably got the greatest range of any male singer in many years. He's an exceptionally talented basso profundo singer. They're all some of the most talented singers I've heard in decades.

Kirstin Maldonado :)
Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX), a 3 time Grammy award winning American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (tenor), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano), Kevin Olusola (vocal percussion), and Matt Sallee (bass). Avi Kaplan, the original bass of the group (he was the second singer in the video you just watched) left in 2017 and was replaced by Matt. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. When Sony's Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group formed its CZcams channel, distributing its music through Madison Gate Records, a label owned by Sony Pictures.[3][4][5] Their CZcams channel currently has over 18 million subscribers and 5 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received more than 347 million views as of April 6, 2021. They are considered the best a cappella group in the world with their innovation and sound....
Exactly. And they can reproduce any of their recordings just as well live on stage with no effects. Though Kevin, the percussionist, sometimes also plays cello, which he calls cello-boxing. Also has a great clear tenor voice.
Thanks,I live in Texas, hopefully I will be able to hear them live when COVID calms down and life outside our home continues. I’m having serious withdrawals from live music.
Excellent synopsis. 👍
Mitch is actually a counter-tenor
@@id10tsyndrome Heard a knowledgeable reactor the other day classify him as "altino", which actually is a thing in opera. (tenor contraltino, reaches C5 without falsetto)

It's an amazing version of this song, but your reaction is priceless.
This video always gives me goosebumps. The pentatonix rabbit hole is deep.
All the members of Pentatonix have amazing voices that blend perfectly together. Mitch (with the hat) has an angelic voice in my opinion. Those group shocks anyone who hasn’t heard them before. But I never get tired of watching the reactions of someone seeing/hearing them for the first time.
My favorite is “Mary Did You Know”. Thank their high school music teacher.
The severe focus on THE HAT....Dude, that effin hilarious!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣😍
The song, :Mary Did You Know', is absolutely gorgeous. It's from their Christmas album.
My favorite! I cry every time I listen!
shot in the same caves that were used in the 60's tv show Batman :)
Yes… my favorite, so touching!
My favourite as well. Love it❤
not from the same album, but also 'Amazing Grace'. Both extraordinary performances!
you noticed voices, cinematography, hat, sun, harmony...but you didnt notice the SOUL...
I laughed at this because I feel like maybe you don’t watch Lboyd much. He was very animated in this and visibly excited. I’d say he very much noticed the soul, but he’s very professional in pointing out the many small details people admire in groups.

If you're anything like the rest of us Pentaholics you're going to go back and listen to this a half-dozen times. Maybe a full dozen. Almost everything they get their hands on is amazing but this one is their showcase IMHO.
I dunno ... Their take on "Sound of Silence" is pretty dope!!
@@ChurchNietzsche It is! Very dope. But I've heard everybody and their uncle do that one so much I was pretty tired of it, good or bad. I'll admit it's one of the best versions out there, but it's one out of thousands.
@@Blue-rl5dp it does get covered a lot, I'll give you that. ... But theirs is possibly the best.
I liked when Disturbed covered it, but I loved when Pentatonix did it.
@@ChurchNietzsche I will always have a soft spot for the original, which came out when I was an impressionable teenager, lol. But yes, Pentatonix does do it best and I really liked the power Disturbed gave it.
I don’t mind the pauses. There’s not a single detail that gets by you and I appreciate that. It helps educate me.
This is an amazing cover of this song, and all credit due to these amazing vocalists, but I so rarely see the original musician who actually wrote this song get credit for spawning the original masterpiece, so I also want to spread some love for the late great Leonard Cohen.
Their harmony is such that they really don't need instrumentation. The sound is so full and complete. This is NOT your normal acapella. There's no comparison between them and any other! This is such a masterful and perfect blending of their voices! The quality and texture of each voice in combination with the others is truly awesome and beautiful!
You mentioned Mitch doing a vocal flip and switching octaves. For more vocal acrobatics from Mitch I'd recommend Gold. He makes it seem so easy. This is a laid back performance but is live and is one of my favourite videos of theirs.
Every timeI hear them sing this beautiful song I cry like a baby! 😂😂
Same here
This is the best most clinical review of this song that I've seen.
This is probably my favorite song by Pentatonix, with “Mary, Did You Know?”, “Imagine” and “Sound of Silence” tied for second! The last one was done after Avi (their bass) left the group and was replaced by Matt, who doesn’t have quite the resonance of Avi but has a lovely voice nonetheless. Thanks for the reaction!
Add Amazing Grace and you have my recommendations as well.
I have agreed with everything you said, and according to the views on this video a lot of other people feel the same way. And I love all the other songs you mentioned also. 👍
1) Do you know why Avi left? Did he think he’d have a better career solo? i never understand when group members do this. It often doesn’t work, and even when it does (Sting), it usually destroys something more precious.
2) What do you think of their duet (sextet?) with Dolly?
@RLucas3000 Not really, he mostly left because the lifestyle of constant touring and performing wasn't what he really wanted anymore. He wanted to slow down, settle down, and spend more time with family, which he couldn't do touring all the time. He made the decision best for him, and i believe they're all on good terms still
“Mary Did You Know” is my favorite!
Mary did you know is my favorite from them gives you chills every time you hear it
" maybe there's a God above" ( light flash!) oh yeah baby There Is a God! Wo0OHo0O! crescendo, key and every elevation so coooool!
Their voices are the instruments-angelic harmony-explosive- tone is so distinct to each voice!
I see this made you feel the same way we all feel when we heard it the first time. I’d be surprised if u didn’t get goosebumps lol.
The type of song that just makes you smile. Great job friend
You are not the only one who said that about a light bath. Excellent commentary!
Omg!!!stop stopping,just listen Bro!your killing me!
They do a queen cover of bohemian rhapsody, also daft punk medley, and countless others I can’t even begin to tell you where to start. I started on them with their covers of songs through the decades.
Ps: I love that you went crazy for the cinematography. They did a superb job on this one to make it humble, soft, exciting, and very to the point. Thanks again for your wonderful reactions ❤️
Beautiful!!
Although you didn't mention the song in this cataclysmic a Cappella rendition, only mentioning the hat and lighting, you are forgiven. I absolutely love this group. The performers change throughout their career, but never lose their momentum!!
They are all amazing but Kirsten and mitch have voices of angels

Agree I love tenors. Mitch being my all time favorite tenor.
Goosebumps every time.
This video was shot in Utah at the Bonneville Salt Flats. It's is absolutely beautiful there .
He’s a counter tenor. I left out Can You Feed the Love Tonight.
Mitch is not a counter tenor. Counter tenors sing like exactly like an operatic soprano. Mitch is a high tenor. But others keeps calling him a counter tenor, and so it will go on. I hadn't heard the term this reactor used, tenor-altino, but at least he didn't say counter tenor.
It’s enjoyable watching you discover this group. They are incredibly talented.
Have you listened to Pentatonix sing "Mary Did You Know?" ; they all sing in that one, and others too , of course. But this song and "Mary Did You Know?" are two of my favorite songs. I love these guys!
They are 3 Emmy award winning professional group. Way beyond college.

I like how you can hardly get past Mitch’s first five seconds. Lol I love his hat too. He is amazing. They all are.
"There's something about her voice...can't put my finger on it." I've always thought Kristie's voice is like the perfect mix of pop, choral and gospel.
Pentatonix is a great group of people, all with near perfect pitch and overflowing with talent!!!
Each one is a leader.

I appreciate the message. This group is something I'd pay to hear
They sing everything beautiful.
Pentatonix's rendition of Radioactive is really good too.
Wow, you have an excellent ear! I've not heard many reactors be able to hear the difference in training between Scott, the baritone singing the 1st verse (more pop influenced) and Avi, the basso profundo singing the 2nd verse (opera trained). Well done! I look forward to hearing more of your reactions.
I agree, first time I have seen a reaction video when someone commented on that. Well Done!
