Story 1 - There’s an update. OP talked to her son as well as the school and rec center. Her son wants to stay with her, and the people at school and the rec center have been instructed not to give her child to those parents under any circumstances.
The mother of that family tried to take OP’s son from school claiming that she was supposed to pick him up, but the front desk refused and had to call the cops to escort her out when she refused to leave. They’ve also been banned from the rec center and will have the cops called on them if they show up there.

Wholesome update to story 3: a lot of people in the comments told OP to thank his dad in actions, not words, so OP made plans to take him to the botanical gardens, and he'll be buying his dad more plants and equipment! A lot of people told OP to live a good and happy life, and OP fully plans on doing that, too, and is currently getting a degree in counseling. Go, OP!

Story 1: This actually happened to my mom and her siblings. My grandma was fighting cancer at the time, so SHE SAID YES. Turns out, "Aunt Mary" had done this before, and that's how we got "Cousin" David. She was horribly abusive, and my grandma literally had to kidnap her kids to get them back. A similar thing happened to me and my siblings in my preteens,as well. This stuff actually happens, and it's nuts.

      @Matty Bruno Lucas Zenere Salas
When my mother was a child, she and her siblings were bribed and then "adopted" by a lady they called Aunt Mary. My grandmother was fighting cancer at the time, so unlike the mother in the Reddit story, she agreed to hand her kids over. (Aunt Mary had done this before with a boy, whom we call Cousin David, even though he's not related to us by blood.)
After beating the cancer, my grandma wanted her kids back, but Aunt Mary didn't want her to have them back, so Grandma had to "kidnap" her kids to get them back from Aunt Mary. This worked because there was never any kind of legal agreement or guardianship, just a verbal agreement, so Aunt Mary couldn't very well take it to the police.
Unfortunately, Aunt Mary was very abusive to all of the kids in her care-- my mom, her siblings, and Cousin David. David's family never wanted him back, so he stayed behind with Aunt Mary and endured the abuse until he was old enough to move out.

*Update on the people who are trying to take my son*
"I have tried to post this update in True Off My Chest but it keeps getting autodeleted. Since I have so many followers, I figured I'd update here and hopefully it gets around.
Well, what everyone feared would happen, did.
Tuesday, he returned to school. I told him he could still talk with and play with Charlie. I was hesitant to drop him off but figured you can’t live in fear.
Most afternoon, my son takes the bus to a local rec center for aftercare. I had already told the school everything and that Nate and Paige were not to pick Owen up. I managed to call and even make sure he got on the bus. Aftercare was also made aware of the change in pick up list.
Well, a half hour later, I get a call that Paige had tried to pick up my son. The front desk refused to release him. Didn’t say why, just that she was no longer on the list. She wouldn’t leave and the police were called. She was escorted out of the building.
While she wasn’t brought to jail, there is a police report and I am using this to go to court and get an order of protection. Paige and Nate are also banned from the rec center so if they *do* show up, they will get arrested for trespassing.
The police are working on ways to protect us and the local social services office has been made aware of the situation, so should they try to make a claim, they’re aware of the situation."

All my friends could afford school lunches and had Game boys, while I had to bring food from home and I drew a Game boy on a piece of paper so I could pretend to play Mario. But the thing is, my parents hid that we were poor from me so well that I didn't even know or care. I didn't know my toys were gifts from others, or that we barely could afford food, because I was so loved it didn't even register. My parents coddled my older brother for awhile, until they eventually realized they screwed up. Do you think they changed their ways for the better and raised us both fairly? Nope. We were equal alright, equally responsible for all of his bad behavior, equal in all his faults. Him being a liar meant I must also be a lair so nothing I said could be trusted. Him being lazy and a procrastinater meant I must also be and since I was apparently a lair too, I couldn't be believed if I said I did it already or didn't have homework. He didn't do his chores so we both got in trouble and grounded because I didn't remind him or help him do it. We both have ASD and ADHD but that didn't matter, I was always partially to blame. She lived with us here and there for months at a time(her mother was an addict) I never thought for a second that taking her away from her mother completely was the answer or even an option. I had to get temp guardianship in order to enroll her in school, take her to the doctor, get her glasses etc. She loved her mom. As far as I know now, her mom has been clean for years. I ended up in foster care which felt like at least 6 months but apparently it was less than that. When i got back from foster care in middle school, she sent her middle child to my school because she wanted me to be buddy buddy with her because she can't make friends. Their house was way crappier than my mom's house so i don't get why they didn't take her kids away, they had like 3 kids crammed into one small room and would let them play with rusty hammers.

It was quite the luxurious place so they were hesitant about the price but out parents agreed to split his cost 50:50 and it worked out great. That's why I feel so bad for OP blaming herself for not seeing signs. Nate and Paige are nuts to even bring it up and play the "it's best for your son" card.
The police are working on ways to protect us and the local social services office has been made aware of the situation, so should they try to make a claim, they’re aware of the situation.

It pisses me off that a family like the first story have the option to adopt and get a kid out of that system, but want to basically kidnap a child. What the hell

The last story: I concur. OP needs to dump her. His girlfriend is the mean girl and her posse are a bunch of bullies. Clearly she has no respect for boundaries, zero comprehension of the word no and no accountability. Therefore she has no expectation of there being reprisals as well as consequences for her actions. I also fear for OP's well-being now that he has called her out. She's already denied and deflected about her toxic abusive behavior. I wouldn't be surprised in order to mask that she's the problem, if she tried to claim he was abusing her. OP should cut and run while he has the chance, but keep any proof he has of her being abusive. I think it will save him in the future.

i had a similar story to the first growing up, i had a slightly better start but it went south when my dad passed away (lung cancer). i was really young so i didn't quite understand everything, but looking back on it and a few of the stories my mom used to tell me, my family on my dads side kept trying to get me to live with them, they kept trying to goat me into basically dissowning my mom and living with them, they were upper middle class while we were on the poor side, sometimes i would be sat down with my aunt and uncle as they tryed to convince me to live with them, my grandma also did the same, and my cousins always judged the lower lifestyle, it came to the point where my mom had to stop talkingg to them because of how much they pressed her about it.
this was the first time it happened, more recently, when i was 15, my mom passed. now it was both sides of my family, everyone who was across the state or even further were trying to make me leave my (for lack of better wording) shitty little town, it was a fair assessment but i made a life here, so i couldn't really leave it behind.

OP should also make sure to keep her ex parents FAR away from herself and Owen.
If they didn’t want to be parents back then and support/help their daughter in a situation, then they shouldn’t expect OP to just welcome back with open arms as they play the “Happy Grandparents” act.
I’ve heard of how parents of the children they’ve abandoned years ago would try and come crawling back to their adults kids’ lives, expecting to either be the grandparents of their grandchildren, get money as “compensation” for raising the kids, use their adult kids like caretakers or all of the above.
If OP’s parents DO try and come back to pull this shitty scummy stunt, OP should give us an update.
As for the Creepy Neighbors that wants to “Take Owen for THEMSELVES”, OP and Owen should just move FAR AWAY from them and file restraining order against them!
This couple shouldn’t even have Charlie OR anybody else’s kids if that’s how they see the children of single parents!
Kids who have single parents AREN’T objects to be taken or even bartered! Screw those psychopathic parents!
Also, “Why wouldn’t Charlie’s parents think about adopting from an adoption place?”
Methinks that they probably lied about Charlie and stole HIM from the hospital or from the adoption agency, and they got blacklisted from all adoption places and are on the warrant list!

Yeah I agree with the red flag point Rslash made- there really weren't any! Everything is only connecting in hindsight, and tbh if OP sees these as full red flags, it will be difficult for her son to have real friendships in the future
My mom used to take care of everyone, all my friends would come over after school constantly, my friends would stay the night if something happened with their parents, everything. The only time my mom tried to get custody of one was when their foster parents decided they were too old to have kids any more, and they wanted to put them back into the system. My mom asked them for guardianship so my friend wouldn't have to move and leave our IB program at school. We only ever got into that situation bc their parents decided it first! Although my mom was always poor, so...
Maybe the red flag was actually that the neighbors are rich!

Op 1, there were no red flags for you to see there. Straight up. When I grew up, my family included my best friend in pretty much everything. He stayed over at least 4 times a week and tagged along on vacations without having to pay. My family was not rich but despite that, my parents just wanted him included as he was like a brother to me. Mine and his parents had great contact and remained friendly throughout our entire youth. Not only does that show her you don't accept that and refuse to support her doing it, it shows everyone you have great standards and self worth. It might not have any effect on her personally, but it shifts everyone to your side regardless, and gives you a wealth of supporters should she turn the nasty on you.

That 2nd story, I actually do kind of understand where OP's fiance is coming from. When I first started dating my wife, she refused to poop with me even within a 100 foot radius of her. He'll, om our first getaway as a couple, she made me go to the hotel lobby while she pooped because she was uncomfortable with me in the hotel while she did. I tried telling her "look, it smells bad yeah, but I mean you don't have to be afraid if I'm in the next room watching TV." She still insisted. It wasn't until about 2 weeks before our wedding she was finally comfortable pooping with me in the next room watching TV. Weird, yes. But still, I don't think OP's fiance was trying to be a douche. I think he felt he was in the same situation I was with my wife.

I, for example, don't smell badly. It's true that I tend to use some form of freshener, such as liquid soap in the toilet, but overall, it's okay.

And I just want to say this I think the reason that the parents that the original poster ended up befriending don't want to go through the legal papers of adopting an actual child is because of the fact I think they think of they have their child befriend somebody there's already that sense of idea that their child is okay with having a little brother and I think that gives them that excuse in their head you know if our son is okay with this person's child let's see if they're willing to just give them up because there's already some sense of attachment to each other and they re groaned a bond with each other I think that's what they think is so normal to them in their heads even though that's not really healthy thinking because of you really want to have another child for your son to call brother or sister but you can't have that child due to medical reasons understandably then just adopt but of course people like this they think in an entirely different way that is just not healthy and very alarming
