WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Jerry has a mouth like a runaway train!
Typical attorney
.
He isn't here to listen, he's here to preach, that's why he's moving the goal posts and butting in.
Jerry is so brainwashed that he cannot see the nonsense he is claiming.
I wouldn't even call it preaching. It was barely-coherent rambling, at best. Preaching has a point, it has definable 'story beats' and an end-goal that the preacher is trying to coerce or trick the listener into arriving at. This guy just ranted.
And that's how these creatures live their lives. They create a narrative and live in an unmovable fantasy that suits their emotional needs. Those that challenge this paradigm will be met with delusion, gaslighting, deflection, salad talking, emotional reasoning and any other of a number of defense mechanisms and cognitive distortions. A great portion of these creatures will then rage or gaslight you with abuse as they seek to get away from confronting any semblance of reality or objectivity. They are a lost cause but also they can be very dangerous particularly collectively.
@@mitchhaelann9215 I didn't say he was doing it well, he just wanted to preach.
Gotta love when people argue "well, I'm right and you just refuse to get it." Super convincing. 🙄
"The reason you don't agree with me is because you don't agree with me. If you agreed with me then you'd agree with me." 🥴
Christians are the worst kind of folks.
They keep it all polite and respectful on the surface.
But there's always this condescending arrogance underneath.
Waiting to boil over when someone calls them out on their bullshit.
They present themselves as curious, or trying to understand your point of view, yet it’s clear they have zero interest in genuinely listening to what you are saying.
Instead, their only desire is to speak to you to attempt covert you.
It’s say’s a lot about their true character.
During what I call my “hippie phase,” I encountered this mentality ALL THE FREAKING TIME. 🙄 I’m right, I’ve seen the light, and if you disagree, then you’re just not “ready/enlightened” yet.
This guy shifted gears from friendly to condescending so fast.

Like most apologists, the man has no idea what evidence even is.
"Hell is hotter, it consumes completely." So what you're saying, Jerry, is that Hell is on the "clean oven" setting, not just broil?
Satan likes a clean workspace. 😜
Hotter than the ovens in the concentration camps? 93% of the germans in Nazi Germany were christians.
For Jerry, of course, they belonged to the 2.68 billion christians misled by Satan. Resp. misled by (christianity-inherent) antisemitism, duty, honour, Nationalism, Hitler's personality.
I'd rather take from this that one won't be tortured in hell forever. Cause it ends when the consumption of one's sole reaches completion.
The arrogance and ignorance of this guy are staggering!
In other words Dunning-Kruger effect.

Have you ever had this conversation, except that the believer was able to listen and answer the questions asked? Ever? One time?
Happens sometimes on the Atheist experience
Never. I have been watching these shows for several months, and I have not heard an Evangelical answer a question or debate honestly. Religious people are so completely dishonest and I don't think that they are going to lose an ounce of sleep over it.
I mean.... Miracles do happen 😂😂😂
What till this caller finds out that he's just as good as the "professional" apologists.
*All apologists are bad...*
Another dominating-the-conversation-equals-being-correct theist. The irony of thinking they'd agree if they'd only listen
It is an art to get these people to realize what they are doing there. You have to take them along, tempt them to talk, want you to understand, so much that they go outside of the bubble of ready-made recitals and THINK about how to express it themselves, in other words.
And once you got them out of their holy, untouchable words, you can question them about those. And make them see the issues THERE. And then lead them back carefully "But what you said yourself and what you said is problematic is what you said is the meaning of your holy text. Does the problem apply to that as well?"
They have to (re)learn how to think on their own, about WHAT they think and WHY. And one has to plant the seed of curiosity, that it is INTERESTING to find stuff out, find it out on your own, go where YOU want to, and not where someone else determined where you want to go.
Jerry just wants to preach. He doesn't shut up.
That caller deserves a special asylum for him.
Imagine what goes on in these people’s heads. It’s amazing to me how people can believe these religious stories that play over and over in their imaginations. It’s mental illness. How do they function in the real world? The depth of their delusions and their grip it has on their mind is terrifying. I just hope they have someone caring for their well-being.

jerry needs to read anything other than that book
I'm surprised you didn't call Jerry out for automatically assuming you "haven't heard the full message of Christianity" at the outset. I sure would've.
You just need to open the book: and interpret it exactly the way I do!
This guy is mental. Doesnt he know that many novels contain real places and some real people. In Jerry's world that means that everything in a novel is true. Doh!!!
mundane places, people, events prove miracles. such low standard and non sequitur.
I doubt jerry, or people like him, read many books at all. Thats why the bible is so fascinating to them, theres no real comparison and they get to make up whatever they want about it
The Medes and the Persians are two separate empires. They are conflated in Christian theology ( and only in Christian theology) in order for the prophecy to make sense. Originally this prophecy pointed to the Greeks, but after the Greeks were replaced by the Romans as the dominant force in the region, the prophecy would have been wrong unless they reinterpreted it as the Medes and the Persians being the same empire.
The evidence this caller is pointing to as proof of God is actually proof of Biblical errancy.
I'm coming from AXP, which sometimes lets the callers say way too little. But this is all the way on the other end, where you just let the caller go off on some monologue that you really should've interrupted fairly early on.
Let me take these goal posts and put Wile E Coyote Acme rocket skis on them.... 😂😂😂
This is your regular reminder that most Jews think that Christians interpretations of the Hebrew scriptures are completely wrong. Maybe Jerry is just another person not properly understanding the texts.
Well, yeah. But that just means those Jews have an incorrect understanding of Scripture, because I have the one true understanding of it. Duh.
--- How I imagine Jerry would react to your statement.
This has big GTA 3 Chatterbox radio station energy
It's wild to hear a caller call in just to hear themselves talk
Most of them are so, same with flat earthers. That are usually not flat earthers, but globe deniers. They have ZERO interests how the flat earth looks like and how things work on a flat earth, all that counts is that them globies are all wrong
Who's going to tell him that the prophecy in Daniel was written after the events described? 🤐
The Hell of the Bible will ruin your whole weekend.
JC had a Really Bad Weekend to save you, me, and Steve from Hell./s
The dude in the rocket could have renter a Cessna and a flight instructor for the price of the parachute for that rocket. Professor Brian Cox flew to Australia and rented a British Electric Lightning fighter jet that took him high enough to clearly see the curvature of the earth and he filmed the flight. Dying for a stupid publicity stunt!
Other books mention real places, the Iliad and Odyssey are great examples. They don’t make Zeus real.
Spider-Man comics are set in New York, and New York is a real place. That doesn't mean Spider-Man is real.
jerry sounds like he's looking for a dictator
18:42 I watched a show last night that had Canadians in it. It blew my socks off when I learned that.
Jerry sound like a caller called Jon from Hawaii. Same voice same Circular Arguments.
Probably because he is. There's a video that went up yesterday with mat and the blond bearded man as the hosts and this guy went under the name of jerry. 3th vid in the video roster. 45 min long.😅
I fully agree with everything said.
Buuuuut. I still watch this series every year of two. Pure guilty pleasure
Sorry Jerry, when people don't agree with you it does not mean they did not hear you.
An example of failed prophecy in the Bible:
Matthew 1:23 kjv
"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."
Another example:
Matthew 16:28: "Verily I say unto you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom."
2,024 years later……….still waiting.
Jesus……JUST ANOTHER FALSE PHROPHET.
The fact that the caller won’t listen, stop talking, let hosts talk, and accuses hosts of not listening shows enough about his character. He’s there to preach, not listen. He doesn’t care what they have to say, he’s just trying to prove his cheesy view.
I play games while listening to these shows, and this was he first time while playing a game I caught myself saying out loud "dammit Jerry let them talk", that's how frustrating that was.
I'm relieved to realize I don't share Jerry's mindset. It's disheartening to grasp that my final breath marks the end, while Jerry faces death with the comfort of believing in paradise to come.
Consider if, before birth, we were presented with a choice: "Would you prefer to live unaware of reality, believing in an afterlife, or confront reality, knowing life ends?" If posed with that question, I'd find it incredibly challenging to respond.
Eternity is an awfully long time ... these people never seem to give any thought to what they would actually like to do with the time.
If Jerry is going to heaven I don't want to go there.
It's Jerry the tru Christian !
When he started condescendingly chuckling... dude, if that’s how “god” wanted you to act on the call, then he doesn’t want anyone to believe 😂
"All that means is the people who wrote the New Testament, read the Old Testament" - Bill Maher

At the end of the day, some people will accept msgic. I never could.
I think people like to beleive they have special knowledge. Its a sad situation pressed by foolish institutions.
I used to enjoy magic. I performed magic tricks in high school. Now I typically avoid magic unless I catch something that to me looks improbable and want to know how it is done. Magic to me now is understanding the brilliance of magicians who come up with that technique.
NEWSFLASH JERRY, there's no way to confirm Nebuchadnezzar's dream either, to say that there is, is wild
How does Jerry know that the being the calls God isn't actually the devil?
Jerry needs to back off the Mountain Dew or Coffee.
"Go to a children's oncology ward" everytime i bring that up to thiests they get real quiet
Jerry doesnt know what the word 'evidence' means.
What Jerry does know wouldn’t fill a thimble.
WOW I CANT BELIEVE THEY BELIEVE LOL 😂 it’s like believing the Wizard of Oz is a true story
He's a REAL Christian. Now Christians are judging each other and not just Atheists.
Plenty of special pleading going on here, as well as circular arguments.
"Oh no the tomatoes have perished."
Guess they're in hell now.
Well you open the book to get a bigger surface area to squash bugs.
When a fire burns the end of an age, we call that Dark Souls XD
Matt would be swearing his head off 5 minutes in. I like listening to these two who can have a civil conversation, no matter how batshit crazy the callers are. ☺
Unrewarding discussion...
It would be VERY funny to see Jerry in a court of law when he is acused of a crime. He would simply say: "I am a human and I am.not guilty. Since I clearly is human, then I must also not be guilty, since both statement was in the same sentence!"
Talk about the past isn't prophecy. The stuff about Nebuchadnezzar was written after he lived, not before. As for telling Nebuchadnezzar about the countries that would come, it doesn't name any of them, it makes vague statements about iron and clay toes that people attached to countries after the fact. Saying something vague and super-metaphorical and then assigning it a specific interpretation after a specific thing happened isn't prophecy either, not in any honest or meaningful way.
"Wait?...what? There are more magical people? That's a great line. Totally stealing that the next time one of these individuals approaches me.
Faith is up to the person. Period. I couldn't care less of YOUR beleif. I have mine. Take care!
I love Darrell 💛
If there ever was a Scotsman.
Faith is not a virtue. Faith is gullibility. Faith is the surrender of your mind. Faith is the abandonment of logic and reason. Faith is the surrender of your free will. Faith is your weakness.
I would.have stopped at "US Bible"
Lmao he actually said prophecy from *other* religions are too vague. It's not even a pot and kettle anymore, it's two pots both screaming that they're actually apples.
I strongly feel that if someone is preaching its a big warning that they are pushing a delusion and feel insecure unless they can convince others of it.
I'm amazed at the number of callers who outright refuse to answer simple questions. They're either trying to avoid a trap they think is there, or refusing to answer, or don't see the point so ignore it.. If Fred wants to convince Jerry of something, then Fred needs to adapt his message to meet Jerry in Jerry's own headspace. If Jerry has answers, Fred must answer them. Avoiding them for any reason weakens the argument. If Fred doesn't feel comfortable answering the question, he can say that but should still address it directly anyway.
If asked a simple binary yes/no question, answer yes or no THEN add qualifiers and clarifications. But answer the question first.
sounds like Jerry is a Seventh Day Adventist
It’s kinda of sad actually that the moment they say “I’m a Christian” and “refer to the Bible” the assumptions about them that I instinctively make.
At this point it isn't an assumption, it's an observed pattern.

Jerry just doesn't have any idea what you were talking about, setting goalposts.
He doesn't want to listen, he just wants to preach.
Am I the only person watching this that thinks that the police should be checking Jerry's basement?
I know that conversations like this are very hard not to sidetrack, but I believe going through his supposed "best arguments" like the "predictions" in Daniel would have been more fruitful. I mean, not only are parts in them vague and will fit with anything, and there's also the almost consensus by scholars that it was written after the fact that most of these prophecies predictions had already happened, there are also CLEAR predictions that just DON'T FOLLOW THROUGH there as well, not even if you twist and turn them.
« I believe in the bible… the common United States bible » 😂😂😂😂
The definition of Faith is being wrong on purpose.

And he can fly by flapping his arms really fast.
You'll NEVER reach these people. Jerry is LOCKED IN on his belief.
The common United States kind of Bible lol
Maybe he thinks James was king of America? A lot of American Christians seem to think Jesus was a fair-skinned, blond-haired, blue-eyed American.
JERRY DOSNT WANT TO LEARN.....HE JUST PREACHES AND PREACHES...
Jerry is a Seventh Day Adventist, pretty obvious. He has never read modern scholarly studies of the book of Daniel. That's probably where our hosts here needed to go at some point.
Can't help but just roll my eyes every time I hear about 'prophecy'. It was even more ridiculous hearing it from this caller, because he mentioned how prophecy ins 'other religions' was 'so vague!' like...dude, so is yours? You've gotta have big cognitive dissonance to not recognize that 'prophecy' in the Christian bible is just as vague and unimpressive as any other religion.
We really need grow up out of this
Do history and research it is what jerry says.
Yet he has only read one book.
Thats some in depth research right there jerry.😂
25:00 "...if you grant me that there's a God..."
The entire thesis of the show is that there isn't sufficient evidence to conclude that and to debate the claims.
Twenty five minutes into the call, and the caller still hasn't accepted a basic premise of the whole show. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.🤦 Yet another caller that despite the best efforts to meet them where they're at, is apparently mostly just waiting his turn to talk.
