Day in the Life of a Type 1 Diabetic!

  • This is definitely my longest, most tedious video ever, but I think it is symbolic of diabetes! Managing diabetes is long and tedious and takes a lot of work!
    If you make it all the way through the video, tell me in the comments, I applaud you! Didn't realize how long of a video filming diabetes all day would be! :)

    These sorts of videos are so interesting, not because you're teaching us anything new, but mostly because it's reassuring that we are all having the same problems and dealing with them the same way. It's nice to know you're not alone in the daily fight!!

    I really appreciate your video. I am taking 3 short acting shots a day and a morning 24 acting shot, both using the pens. I literally drop off and shoot up when I eat and I am in the process of getting my sugars under control. My days are different though as I have 3 children and a husband plus church and the yard. So it can be difficult to eat when I should and check. I check about 5-6 times a day when I am checking well and I sometimes have to give myself extra shots when I really want more than an apple and cheese stick for a snack. I will be getting the pump hopefully soon. Wireless and waterproof because of my very wet life as a mom in the summer time :). Watching your video made me see how I will have to work harder to keep on it. Again I do appreciate your video, its very insightful.

    Crazy nighttime blood sugars are the worst! Really enjoyed this video. :) Just out of curiosity (because I don't know much about the dexcom - I use pens and a regular BG monitor myself)... why do you check your blood sugar with a monitor even though the dexcom gives you a reading? Thanks! :)

    • @GetRevved
      @GetRevved Před 10 lety

      The BG meter measures glucose levels in the blood and the Dexcom measures glucose levels in the interstitial fluid. Most of the time, glucose travels first to the blood and then to the interstitial fluid. Because of how glucose travels, the BG meter readings and sensor readings will rarely match exactly, but they should be fairly close.
      This is normal and should be expected because they are measuring glucose levels in 2 different fluids in the body. For the Dexcom to be accurate it needs regular 'calibrating' which is when you enter the reading from the BG meter.

    So at what point do you have to start to count carbs? I don’t know if i should be doing so with my blood sugar going low a lot I don’t use a dexcom I now know what that is for and it’s helpful to know! Also do you only need to count carbs when your BG goes low and high? So as not to eat too many carbs to raise BG too high or eating not enough so as to make your BG go too low?? I so far have only had low BG. I’m not sure if that will change for me or not! I’m not diagnosed yet but I check my BG to keep track so when I go to my dr I will have a log of it all for them to properly diagnose me and figure this thing out!

    Hi Danica! I loved the video but why do you subtract dietary fiber from the bolus? Also I have a video request for people who recently got a pump and are not at all used to is like me. So the video should be about how to click the buttons on the pump inserter. It's hard to explain but the hardest part about the pump for me is clicking the buttons on the mio infusion set because I'm scared to click it.A lot of people have told me they also have the same problem. So you should just do the video on how you insert it fast and how to get over the mental block of pushing the buttons to insert the pump site. Thanks!

    • @TVorNotTeeVee
      @TVorNotTeeVee Před 10 lety +1

      Here's a good explanation of the reason we subtract the fiber for "No Potato":
      "On Nutrition Facts food labels, the grams of dietary fiber are already included in the total carbohydrate count. But because fiber is a type of carbohydrate that your body can’t digest, it does not affect your blood sugar levels. You should subtract the grams of fiber from the total carbohydrate."

    I used to have lows during the night as well! I used to do Lantus (16 units) at about 11 or 12 pm and then slept. And almost 90^% of the times I would wake up with low at 4 or 6 am and would have to eat something.. which was really annoying. then I switched to doing Lantus in the morning (as soon as I woke up) and the difference was that I did more insulin (fast-acting, Humalog) units for breakfast and just before I went to bed if I had higher than 140 I would do ine units of insulin and I would wake up in the morning (10 am or later) with glucose from between 80-120 :) Hope it helps!

    Danica, do you get scared or anxious when your blood sugar starts heading down? And I find it interesting that you give insulin before you shower because showers make my blood sugar drop about 30-45 mg/dL. I usually eat a small snack (7g-10g of carbs). Also, I notice you use a calculator to add carbs. Have you thought about a pump with a built in calculator? I use T:Slim pump.

    Hey Danica, I'm a Type 1 diabetic i was diagnosed when i was 26 now a year later some changes are different like the shower. Can you explain why the blood sugar drops after a shower? And just curious has anything you ate high in salt made your blood sugar drop? Thanks so much stay healthy and God Bless

      I'm fairly certain it drops cause the insulin that is in you, Goes around your body faster cause it's hotter, That's what I think anyway

      Maybe try checking your blood sugar 1-2 hours after you eat to see how different foods affect you

    Just a comment that you can use if you want :) I know that we are usually told that apples have lots of dietary fibres and so they will be long lasting, but I experience that when I eat an apple, it behaves pretty well at first but after one and a half hour, my blood sugar will fall pretty fast, so I usually don't bolus for an apple :/ I was just wondering whetehr that is what you experienced at lunch :)
