Great comparison of the two devices. You were very thorough and made some fair and well thought out comments and conclusions. I think they're both great devices, but I will stick with using my iPad mini for now. I'm not a professional, so taking a minute or two to connect my device is not a priority for me. But perhaps down the road I will consider one of these devices. Thanks for sharing this informative video.

Great comparison video! I have the 5.5 CS and a Mavic Pro. Got the 12 volt car (PH3) adapter to charge the CS Battery from Amazon. Glad I bought the CS. The battery life is amazing and love when the fan comes on in the hot summer heat. It makes the world of difference flying with a CS. Couldn’t go back to using my iPad which overheated if you were in the direct sun in the summer and DJI GO4 was tough on the IPad’s battery.

The one thing that I really don't like about the Crystal Sky is the way that they sell it without the required charging cable and if you don't own the Phantom series your stuck buying one seperately. It's not a big deal I know but it's just something they do that doesn't make sense to me. I too bought the screen protector for my smart controller. I would have preferred the same screen as the CS but it's still all I was hoping for to me. Another cool informative vid. Thank you

I would say if you have multiple drones across the Mavic, phantom and even Inspire brands, then the crystal sky is the way to go as of early 2019. If you have multiple drones you have to bind the smart controller each time you switch aircraft.. not so with the crystal sky since presumably you already have a transmitter already bound for each aircraft you purchased previously so just attach the crystal sky to the transmitter you already have and intend to use without the need to bind it to a different aircraft. If you are contemplating just purchasing the Mavic 2 zoom or pro, then the smart controller may be the better purchase at checkout instead of the standard transmitter

  • @phildevore4543

Very informative and descriptive information from your tutorial Ken, as usual.
I purchased the 7.85” UB Crystal Sky right after it first came out (December 2017) and I had overheating problems immediately. After a few months I sent it back and DJI replaced it free of charge supposedly with the newer improved version but it still feels like it overheats somewhat. I use it for my Inspire 2 when it is extremely bright out but the Android based system is not something I am fond of. I am an iOS guy and I wish DJI would have used it as their OS instead of Android.
At this time I am not interested in the Smart Controller as it isn’t compatible with all my different aircraft. When I fly my M2P I use my iPad mini 4 unless it’s too bright out and then I use my 7.85” UB crystal sky monitor

Im a fan of the CS for its versatility but I worry its under-powered... I like to screen record every flight, plus Id be running the HDMI out to a pair of BT-35E's and Im worried that the CS (or even the Smart Controller) can handle these loads, with their less than stellar internal specs. Have you done any screen recording and/or HDMI output during your flights? Love to hear your experience or thoughts. Thx Dobo

i've gotten the CS/UltraBrite-7.85 since Xmas & its a fantastic monitor...! (Pros)the screen display is super crisp & awesome kinda like a 4K tv,@2000nits,with superb battery life,(Cons)way behind of older firm/software versions, which causes performance issues such as lagging, app clashes/crashes, & slow responsiveness...! but overall im hoping sooner than better DJI will fix all this with firm/software to updated versions...! overall its a super-duper monitor to pair up with M2-P/Z..... I have the CS, had it for about a year, works well with my Mavic Pro and integrated well with my Mavic2 . The only thing i had wished for was that DJI made a modified mount like the mount for the MavicP1. I ended up buying an additional MP1 mount and self modifying it to fit my M2Z controller, it works the same, you basically have to shorten the mount and relocate the mounting holes the way i did it. I have a video on my channel , but i am not a youtube drone guru nor am i trying to be one hahaha, so its not detailed like some of you guys would do it. but you will get the just of what i did from it. i just hate that they didnt look out for previous owners of the Crystal Sky, that bought those expensive monitors. it was almost like a FU, here buy the Smart Controller too.
The best thing about the Crystal Sky is its adaptable to all your other drones just like moving your phone from one device to another. To sum my comment up. I would rather keep the 2 as individual, for the sake of potential problems, with either the monitor or the controller, combined a problem with one or the other is a problem with both

15 months later. The CS works great with Mavic Air also. I bought the 7+inch model, only way I could enjoy flying in the bright AZ sun. I tried all sorts of hoods with an iPad and iPhone but the Crystal Sky brightness is great. Frankly, I think it is too complex for what I want it for, it is feature rich. But definitely pricey.

  • @KimDiscoveringHistory

Great review buddy. I have both sized CrystalSky monitors which covers both my Mavic 2 pro and my P4P however, the bracket which fitted the original Mavic wouldn't fit the new controller for the Mavic 2 pro which sounded alarm signals that DJI were up to something, hence now the new controller. I felt let down by DJI that they never produced a new snap on bracket for the M2P just so they could promote there new controller. I for one am sticking with the CrystalSky as this also works for my Osmo camera and various other equipment I have. Thank for your in depth review which I found very helpful.😀👍👍👍👍👍

Always great reviews! Honest and to the point - good or bad! Love that! I'm sticking with my iPAD mini and sun-shade. I think it sucks that DJI came out with this product after I purchased my Mavic 2 Pro, and for that reason alone I wont purchase it! I have no issue spending money on a quality device, as I've invested tons on DJI products and accessories, but I hate the thought of owning a controller that will sit on a shelf after having spent my hard earned money on it, and it doesn't appear that DJI gives a crap about that as they are not offering any kind of trade-in credits for the controllers people already have with the Pro and Zoom!

I have the large CrystalSky and I love it. I can use it both on the MA and the M2Zoom. I love being able to change the batteries on the fly. The controller, if the battery runs out, you are down. You won't be able to fly and that is bad.

SWF Company open up the controller, swap out the battery, close the controller. I’ve read that you can get 400 charges then 3 hours flight time and that equals 1,200 hours of flight time. I haven’t taken the time to open this one up yet but I can’t imagine it would be all that hard. I just enjoy how fast it is, open controller bag, push the ON button, open the arms on the Mavicpro2 and take off the gimbal cover, press the ON button,,,,,fly....the crystal skies needs a mount, mount bracket, cables, extra batteries to carry and is slower to boot up. It was a no brainer.

I use the Crystal Sky screens on all my drones that will take them, and yes, the controller will still work if the screen crashes. It happened to me a few times. The 'return to home' feature is always your backstop. But you're flying VLOS all the time, so shouldn't be an issue, you can reboot the screen while still having control of the SUSV. Done that myself, and it works fine, just a bit of a brown trousers moment.

Thought I would look up the price for the crystal sky and I had to pick my jaw up as it hit the floor. 500 to over a grand for that tablet depending on size and brightness. Smart controller is expensive but you get everything needed to fly. Crystal clear still requires a 80 dollar mounting attachment for controller. I guess if I had money to piss away or made money from my drone, I would definitely get one.

For me, it's all about a safe flight. As per the video, I like to have the screen above my control surfaces. So the DJI Smart controller is a fail out of the box for me. Yes, my Spark and series 1 Mavic have screens below the sticks. But as someone who takes piloting a drone/SUSV seriously, I don't want to move my hands to see important information on the display. There is one possible plus to the Smart Controller, possibly also a downside. An inbuilt battery. So when travelling by plane, you probably don't have it in carry on baggage. I always have at least one spare battery for each of my Crystal Sky monitors, but have never had to change one while the drone was in flight.

Hi, in my opinion there is one very important consideration and that is versatility. As you say the smart controller only works with the Mavics. It doesn’t cover the Phantoms or Inspires. The Crystalsky is a monitor that works across the entire range.
Currently DJI are on Ocusync 2. Will the smart controller work with Ocusync 3, 4 etc?
Based on their previous history with different, non compatible batteries and controllers why would anyone believe that the smart controller is going to be compatible with the future incarnations of DJI products ?
I believe the smart controller is a good product but it’s going to have a limited application and at the current price it not worth it. The Crystalsky has the versatility to go forward, albeit with it’s delayed firmware updates (I con myself into believing the early role outs are beta versions and us CS owners get the proper “debugged “ update🤫).
Take care and catch you later. Peter

I don’t see myself using it even if it’s compatible for P5; I would MUCH rather use crystal sky... crystal sky can be used as external monitor as well, coupled with the things you’ve highlighted in this video - it’s a no brainer. Smart controller should have been a $150 option with Mavic 2 or maybe even included with Mavic 2 Pro for that pricepoint.

Originaldobo Ken your getting sent these items, it’s a little different circumstance when you got to nut up your own money; especially when your on a budget. The general conscious from the entire community is the smart controller is just too damn much money. I wish I knew the actual numbers of what they are selling but I would imagine it’s not matching crystal sky’s numbers when sky first launched. Definitely appreciate your opinion, but I respectfully disagree in this circumstance.

      @CaliforniaPhantom Před 5 lety

Originaldobo and that is why I said I respectfully disagree with your opinion. I will NOT stop complaining when I think an item is overpriced. Price has got to figure into the utility of the item. As I said from my previous post IMO crystalsky is a better option for this reason. I apologize for incorrectly assuming you received the smart controller for free as a demo unit, but you have been receiving a number of items from your channel sponsor - I’m sure you can see how I incorrectly arrived at that conclusion. I enjoy your channel and your content Ken.

When buying Fly more kit with a new drone drops the smart controller cost. You pay a little over $ 300 vs. the $750 they are asking for it. This is great if your looking for a new drone, if your not looking for a new drone, I think the $750 is steep for what your getting... Just saying...

I have the 5.5 and the 7.8 Ultra and I like the Crystal Sky Ultra, not the 5.5, better than my Smart Controller. First, the stock Mavic 2 controller gets way better range than the smart controller. With the Crystal Sky Ultra and the stock controller, I have had my Mavic Zoom and Pro both out to around 32.000 ft (6 miles) and made it home with good signal in a suburban area. The Smart Controller only manages about 24, 000 ft.(4.5 miles). I have an adapter that puts the crystal sky below the sticks similar to positioning of a phone and I love the extra screen size and 2000 nts. Also, the adapter fits any of the Mavics and my EVO so I can fly any of my drones and the position below the sticks, which balances perfectly with good feel and control.

I’m calling bs on that. The Mavic 2’s
Don’t have the battery life to make it out 32,000 ft and back. I’ve tried many many many times. Your extremely lucky if you hit 30,000 and make it back.

Seems like there are many things DJI could have done to improve both. For starters, use iOS.

Can't use iOS, Apple does not licenses iOS for any products. Only Apple products run Apple Code Legally.

Don't buy neither of them! DJI will let you all hanging with dated software as they did with Phantom 4pro+ owners like me...I bought my P4P+ brand new two years ago when they released it, and back then DJI swore that they will allow us to download third party apps through our controllers, but guess what, that never happened. I promise that the Same thing is going to happen to all you Crystal Sky and Smart Controller owners... You'll see...
I sold my P4P+ and bought a Mavic 2pro which I use with an IPad Mini 4... I'll never buy any DJI product that runs Android because they aren't Android friendly... Apple products works better with DJI...
    My 2 cents...👍🏾

I've still got my P4 pro+, it was the first drone I bought, and still a great 'go to' for me. I'm comfortable flying it, I've got a shed load of hours on it. But I have to agree with ricardopr541 here. Why did DJI release a controller with an onboard screen when they do seem to be more biased towards the Apple ecosystem? As an example, where is the ground station pro app. for Android?

@paul smith Not true. You see nothing on this mini screen! 🤣 You can use the controller only for the two newest DJI drones. DJI was easily able to make this controller also working for older models, except for there WiFi only drones i.e. the Spark. The controller is way to expensive and again, the screen is also way to small for any real " Professional" use.
