About me (the guy behind the cryptic three T's):
my name is Tom David Frey. I'm half Swiss and half German and have lived in many fantastic places, from the United States to Israel. Somehow cool.
My age? Well, it rapidly changes. But you can surely do the math: I was born in 1992, somewhere in a small town in mid-Rhineland-Palatinate.
Now the relevant things you came here for: I have a strong passion for cameras and drones. I got my first Sony at the age of six and started my own business when I turned 18 (don't ever let people tell you that you will not succeed; Live your dreams!).
Nowadays, I'm shooting videos in many countries. I have private clients as well as major companies I'm working with, f.e. Netflix. And everyone knows that one, right?
But, more importantly, I love to fly and shoot (video) with my drones. I've flown in so many countries already (China, Switzerland, the USA, Spain, Iceland, Israel, Germany, and plenty more) and love to explore the world from above in all its beauty.
That's why my main business is all about drones. I capture the world from above. And I share my experiences, knowledge, and the best new inventions with you.
Drones and cameras excite me so much that I put a lot of time and hard work into creating my videos. And I love that you guys appreciate them!
Now, join me on my adventures and subscribe to my channel.

The fine print quickly summed up đ»
Some of the links above are so named "affiliate links". By using those, I can get a small provision for purchases you guys make. That way, I can stay true to you because I don't need companies to pay me for creating videos. I'm independent and loyal to you - the best audience!
Therefore, if you purchase your gear through my links, I can keep up the honest work. đ
The videos on my channel are property of Tom David Frey. Duplicating and re-uploading them without my written permission is prohibited. Sorry, guys, but that's necessary. I work hard on my content and somehow need to make a living. Maybe instead share my videos, but spreading the link or embedding them to your websites or forums. But please, don't steal my work. đ
By law, I have to mark my video as a "commercial." I herewith do so: this video is a commercial. Though I promise to be honest to you, my audience, all of the time. I like nothing less than fake reviews and videos that spread half-truths just for the financial gain of someone. I believe that being honest to you is much worthier in the long run than make quick money by spreading fake information. Truth rules! Don't you believe me? I already had to give up on two promising cooperations because the companies found my videos to be too honest. I call that my occupational risk. đŠŸ

Great review mate!! Thank you so much!
Good job, Tom. I like the form factor. Neat and clean. Your review of it was, as always, thorough and easy to follow! Well done!
Great comprehensive review videos like this are why I value your videos and stay subscribed. Thanks again for another one.
Best review! Thanks for all the detailed information!
Always thorough...thank you Tom
Thanks, Tom! Just purchased this product based on your review. (y)
Tom this is a really comprehensive description and review - I needed this information to commit to buying this now that the Mavic Air 2 is supported - Great review - Keep up the Great work and Thanks
Very nice review, thanks.
One question: does that device allow to switch from CE to FCC to increase signal?
Thanks for all the great info! How do you get the Mavic 2 pro to automatically send the files to the Smart Controllers?
Thank you for your video. It was very informative. I just bought the DJI AIR 2S with the Smart Controller. Again, thank you for what you do!
Awesome review! Thanks!
Fantastic video. Straight to the point. Cheers.
did you test HDMI out? Its a clean HDMI out like phantom series, or its a android screeen mirror?
Hi. Nice video. I have 2 questions:
1- Do you know if the two wheels can be set to move (pan and tilt) the camera?
2- Do you know if there is also a combo with the Enterprise edition?
Thanks
I like this review, Thank you Tom.
Thanks for great review!!
Very informative video..well done!!!
Thanks for the review, though a couple points to consider. Not sure about your objectivity, seems very slanted towards a DJI marketing video, and 2) Would've been nice to see more of a comparison of the brightness of the screen and size, since that is the number 1 selling point.
Aaron D would have been nice if he actually explained the controller too. It was more of an unboxing type basic video.
This is great! The timing is perfect considering the cost of phones. Plus it looks like a time saver for getting airborne.
Hi Tom, thanks for this video. I just bought the landing platform through your link. I am condidering the smartcontroller as I donât like the connection of the smartphone to the other controller.
Great review!
I have the smart controller and can't figure out what the button on the right top is for I think it is called the select button what does it select I have learned a lot from your channel love it keep up the good work
The cold weather call-out is appreciated. I like shooting videos in very cold weather and my phone doesn't like this as much as I do!
Thanks Tom. Is there a quick and easy way to change the settings from imperial to metric?
Hello Tom, You're doing a great job educating the world about drones. I'm a new drone owner, DJI Mavic Pro Platinum. Being new, I looked into the new FT Aviator joy stick control device. I look forward to hearing your impressions of this new control device. Thank you,
They should have made the controller compatible with all their drones. . . . now that would be worth the money.
Yes, that's true. I wish it was compatible with all of them.
But because different drones use different transmission technologies (from WiFi to Lightbridge to OcuSync to OcuSync 2.0) that's probably hard to do.
But for owners of a Mavic 2 this controller is a big step forward and super useful!
No brainer for my P4P. too bad its not compatible. bummer.
Its compatible with all future drones with Ocusync 2.0. :)
ÂŽ
Tom's Tech Time Occusync 2.0 is backwards compatible with Occusync 1.0 on a hardware level, adding WiFi isnât a big deal and would have been very cheap, could have either put a physical switch on the side to switched the Radio from SDR based (Occusync) to WiFi based. As for Lightbridge I understand them not adding that, DJI will phase out Lightbridge in favor for Occusync.
Also Occusync is cheap to build as it is SDR based and can use off the shelf parts with custom firmware and software, Infact probably as cheap to make and validate as WiFi.
Lightbridge was genuinely expensive as it was a completely in house solution and DjI even custom rolled hardware for it, thatâs one of the big reasons why everything will soon be Occusync or WiFi...cost effective
DJI is obviously doing this intentionally for reasons of greed I think. They pretend not compatible but any hardware hacker knows after tearing it apart that it is.
Photomind absolutely. I can see 2 versions of the future..
1. All DjI Drones have Occusync variants (smaller drones mate have a Occusync Air/Lite system)
2. All drones being Occusync based for higher end or and WiFi for midranged and lower end.
Sad reality is All Occusync is is SDR based system (Software Defined Radio) so itâs very cheap to make make and validate, probably similar to using WiFi. Baffles me why DjI hasnât started pushing all drones to Occusync tech. The phase out from Lightbridge began about 2 years go...
What other DJI drones can this work with? Looks like just the Mavic 2. Is the display brighter than the DJI Crystal Sky monitors I currently use? Personally, I like the display above the control sticks so I can see it clearly when in use and adjust the angle if needed. Where's the attachment point for a neck or body strap? What's the battery life like? Not getting one myself as it adds nothing to my current flight control system.
Tom. Any word on if the regular DJI Mavic 2 controller will be able to add a second remote, like the Mavic Pro.
Nice review Tom!
Hi, could you tell us what are the gloves you are using, they look very practical for winter droning ?!?! Thanks !
Hi Tom, you make really good videos, clear and easy to understand so people can build their knowledge. I wonder if I could ask you a question about the Smart Controller, linked to maps. When I got my first drone it was a Spark, I used iOS and Litchi, with Google Maps. Now I have upgraded to a Mavic Zoom and have a Smart controller, Iâm super happy with everything apart from one thing, the Maps. When Iâm in the DJI go4 app to do waypoints and such like the maps are really poor, very outdated and not very detailed or clear for planning missions. Is there a way to use Google maps on the smart controller? If there is please share it as my experience with litchi set the bar with the maps, now I have a better drone and controller but poor mapsđ
Thanks Jason (UK)
Good review. Thanks Tom. It is a shame the smart controller is not backward compatible for use on older DJI drones.
Mine comes tomorrow, can't wait for the added distance. Thanks for getting me excited to create with it!
LunarElevens itâs not an added distance. Itâs actually lower distance than the other controller
Hi Tom,
First of all thank you for your time and sharing all your work. I admired all your videos. I have a question. I am working in broadcast filming events by drone live tv shows.. I am having problems with 1080p 50p . Broadcast live feeds wanted 1080 50i. I am looking for some solutions. I am using transmitter and feeding my footage from my phantom 4 advanced plus 1080p 50 p. Quality on tv awful. What you can recommend for me in your experience. I would appreciate your help. I have inspire 1 pro as well. But inspire1 pro feeds maximum 720p and same problem there is no option to choose 50i as well. Is there any other solution regarding 50i feeds. I really would appreciate your help. Thank you.
Hey Tom loved your video is this device compatible with other drones too like spark or Air
Very useful but one big fault i saw is Holding problem , why they didnât made with both side fingers holder for comfortable use and safety ?
Can it record internally h264 - h265? Great video thanks
Is it worth waiting for an updated Smart Controller with a SIM card slot or should I buy a smart controller now?
Hi Tom. Great review, as always! I am wondering if the micro SD on the controller will record a redundancy of the drone recording as a back up. Likely just in 1080 if it will. Or, is it just for revising footage from the drone SD? Thanks!
ah ha. I should have waited to see the whole video. you answered my question.
So what all dji products can it be used with? Can i use it with my Spark?

Great video as always, I just want to point out that the Galaxy S8 produces up to a very impressive 1,020 cd/m2 (nits) in High Ambient Light, where high Brightness is really needed. I have never had a issue with it. I am glad that this unit uses the Android operating system, hopefully we will get the same updates as IOS now.
Thumbs up ere' Tom, great review and info of the Smart Controller! Many thanks for spreading the info :)
Thanks for the feedback! Stay tuned and fly safe!
Hi Tom, great review, as usual. I am as IOS guy so I don't understand Android. Did you get a feel for it being able to operate the Litchi app?
Hello those Gloves are very nice , where did you get them?
Is it still possible to pack this into the stock Mavic 2 bag with two batteries or only one?
i love those black gloves your wearing with the finger outlets... where can i pick up myself a pair?? much appreciated awesome review!!
A site question here, but can you tell me the case you use in the video? I am awaiting delivery of my smart controller and none of the cases I looked at support the smart controller but rather just the normal controller. Thanks for the review though Tom.
Is the right wheel clickable? Like P4P remote? To change shutter speed and aperture?
Thanks for the review Mr. Tom, 2 questions, 1. I think the screen size is too small to have fun. Would the bigger crystalsky screen with the stupid controller will be a better choice? Can i connect the smart controller to crystalsky bigger screen? ( that sound super stupid but i do want a bigher screen) 2. When the app crash, doest the controls keep on working or do i need to count on auto come home feature?
Is there a way to change (increase) the resolution and bit rate of the video cached in the Controllerâs SD card. So in case the drone crashes into sea, we still have a usable copy.
What do you think the ÂŒ-20 screw holes are for? Iâm surprised they did not make an easy way to attach a lanyard!
If the app locks up or crashes, can you reboot the screen without shutting off the remote? The Phantom 4 Pro + has this problem. If your Android crashes, you must reboot the entire controller mid-flight. This forces your Phantom to RTH while you reboot. Hopefully, this controller allows you to reboot your Android but STILL allow you to control your aircraft during this reboot.
Does the DJI smart controller fit into the carrying case they advertise on their storefront? I couldn't really tell. How about the Pgytech case? I didn't actually see the smart controller being removed from it.
Thanks!
Is it possible to output clear Full HD/4K video using the HDMI output? Do you have to hide the overlays or does it output clear video?
It's compatible with the Mavic 2 Enterprise, but you need the DJI Pilot App, so I have to load this as a third party app on the remote ?
Hi Tom i see many review this smart controller is laggy than the usual RC ? please advise thank
Hi Tom. Can you suggest me a pair of gloves to use in winter with drones?
Does it fit inside the Fly-more Combo Shoulder bag with a Mavic 2?
What about the position of the antennas. Does it matter the direction they're facing? Thanks
Tom's Tech Time: Will the files formatted to the SD card, be in "quality when shared to Facebook" or when viewed? I just recently purchased a DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Smart Controller. Is there any need to install an SD card into the aircraft? Please share with me any helpful information. Can chosen files, Not all files, but just certain photos and videos be transferred to my I-phone 11 Pro Max? Also can I delete just certain photos and/or videos I wish to delete from the SD card without affecting other files downloaded on the SD card?
thank you for the vid... cache maps?
My note 9 is not on the compatible list of phones to use, but I do have a great data package with hot-spot. Will this controller be the answer to my problems if I wanted to purchase a mavic pro 2 with smart controller?
Roger
Hi the smart controller has the battery in it - when continually charging the whole unit - how long will it last? Does it mean you then then have to throw the unit away?????
This is a bit late but I just bought the mavic 2 pro and smart controller, I'm very happy but cant understand why you cant dial up the battery discharge time i,e 4 days to 10 days as this feature isn't listed in the battery details within the go4 app on the smart controller?
Love your tips Tom. Wish there where more tips on your editing software and use. Also more on Mavic Pro 2
I'm having trouble installing DJI Pilot onto the smart controller (resources missing error) and Lichi is reporting incompatible with device in the google play store - have you been able to install any?
I have the mini 2 and it's good enough for my needs, the main issue I have is flying it in bright sunny days, since the RC controller is not compatible with the mini 2 is it a good upgrade (controller) for the mini 2 in 2023?, is there any issues using this controller with the mini 2?
Tom, is the WAYPOINT option not available on the Smart Controller?
What is the case you showed in this video at 3min:30sec? Can I get a link please?
Hot dog!!! ive been waiting for this! goodbye iPhone and iPad....thanks Tom ! will be buying from you
Can you record the screen for easier review in case of accident? What about flight logs?
Great intel!
Won't fit in my two hard cases (which I love) like my IPad Mini4 does. I have had good luck with a hood when necessary and use sometimes for hours at a time. Thanks for the review.
nice video! I subscribed!
What are the two screw receptacles on either side of the bottom, on opposite sides from the power plug?
What about maps? Live GPS maps or do you have to do the offline download before you fly? Or can you connect to your phone's WiFi hotspot?
I have the same question. I know you can connect it to your phoneâs WiFi hotspot, but will that give you the live map or do you still have to download maps in advance?
Hi Tom! I need to know about some UAV app fully compatible with smart controller, as despite off I been able to install UAV forecast on the smart controller using you akp method, it is still not fully compatible to check NFZs
Will this work for a deerc de22 I bought that drone a year ago flew once with my phone did not like useing my phone. I want to but a screen controler they are spendy so I need help to make sure I buy one that works.
Tom how can I broadcast live to Facebook live ? I used to be able to do it a few years ago but now I canât.THANKS for your help.
(I have a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom)
In another video the person said the gimbal and zoom control were switched.
Can you reverse the controls in the software?
I'm used to having the gimbal control on the left and zoom on the right.
I wish the price would come down. Surely they have made up their research and development by now.
Excuse my being a newbie. I bought my first ever drone, m2p in Nov 2018. I tried flying it without using my iPhone or iPad, of course LOS. It flies man!
Tried checking this in Philippines but it is no longer available in dji store. Its a couple of years now but i still love my dji mavic 2 pro. My remote controllerâs screen became orange but it is still working though. Hopefully i can find one
Can you control the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum with this controller?
Toms Tech Time , you really should state that you got the unit free for review. This is a re-imagining of the CrystalSky, about the same price (ÂŁ600). The downside is you only get one SD slot with the controller. To say it works at -20 might be true, but your battery performance will suffer in the cold, it's only a LiPo after all and it needs those extra milliamps to power a 1000 NIT screen.
I bought a CrystalSky and am interested to see if DJI continue to support it with upgrades or if this takes over - and potential buyers should be interested too, because if they don't then the chances are this controller will be out dated in 12 months. The upside to the CrystalSky is that you can use it with more than just the Mavic 2, handy for those of us who have to pay for our equipment.
Great đ
Hi. Could you touch base on how to take picture and how to zoom it? I tried to zoom to take picture and I could not figure it out.
Hooooray no more cables đââïž, Nice video đ„đ„
Haha, I really meant that! The cables often gave me a hard time. Many of my "fake" Lightning cables didn't work or the signal dropped in flight and I had to switch the cable... It now won't happen again. ;)
@@TomsTechTime Yes, Thats really a greatest advantage, fake cables are horrible when flying long distance.(mid air signal drop when it is far away).
Nice video.
Let s say i am on safari and there s no WiFi ...so how it ll be working than?

I have 64gb in drone and one in Smart Controller. It's great to be able to review the footage on the SC straight away. Is this footage is only cashe? and therefore cannot be uploaded to my iMac?
Do I have to take the sd from drone which has the 'real' 4k file? Is this correct?
If I was away on a job and wanted to backup my drone footage to say a Sandisk SSD plus I plug drive into ???? USB A or USB C ?
But also the SC has only cashe files so how do I backup proper 4K files? Oh and one last thing. The screen recorded files? Are they always saved to SC micro sd? So I would like to put on my computer or do they save to the internal SC storage or doesn't it matter as can be moved over? Thanks in anticipation
A hdmi cable can be hooked to the tv from the remote correct?
thanks Tom for the great review. Do you know if there comes a flymore option with this controller, instead of the normal controller? or have we buy always mavic 2 with the normal controller?
DJI offers Smart Controller package, out of stock...
Good job DJI & nice work with the reviewđ Quick question, does it work with Mavic 2 Enterprise Dualđ€
1. The DJI Smart Controller is compatible with any DJI drone that uses OcuSync 2.0. To ensure compatibility, always make sure your aircraft is updated with the latest firmware. (It will also be compatible with Mavic 2 Enterprise in the future.)
DJI's announce video says Mavic 2 pro, zoom AND enterprise.
@@mervynsoon9624 doesn't the Inspire 2 use Occusync 2.0 as well? If this is compatible with the I2 or P4P drones (not sure how Master/Slave designation would work on the I2) then it might be an interesting alternative to avoid paying for a CrystalSky monitor.
@@RedSlate87 Am very sure they will get this to work. YEs its an compact alternative Crystalsky monitor
I would like to know how many drone batteries you use before the new controller needs charging again
its odd the position it puts the antenna in given the way they work, ie they are omnidirectional antennas so the antennas ought to be orientated so the face of the antenna is facing the aircraft for best signal ?
Can I hook the dji controller to my wifi ptz cameras at my business?
Hello, I have a mavic air 2 and the dji smart controller I have a problem, I cannot find the operation and the setting on the dji smart controller for the gimbal so I can actually climb up and down on the wheel left and I thought the right thumbwheel also worked to steer right to left and it doesn't work, maybe there is a trick, thanks.
