The DJI Smart Controller has arrived and it is impressive! It is specifically designed to work with OcuSync 2.0 and has a 5.5 inch 1080p display that works in bright sunlight and extreme conditions. We tested it in cold weather and bright sunlight. We also compared it to the original Mavic 2, Mavic Pro (using iPhone 10) and Phantom 4 Pro+ remote controls to see how it stacks up! While it is not essential to have a Smart Controller to fly your Mavic 2 series drones, it really is a big step up for professional pilots, videographers and photographers.
Because it is compatible with OcuSync 2.0, the DJI Smart Controller is also designed to support more DJI aircraft models in the future. I know it’s a luxury, but now that I’ve flown with the DJI Smart Controller, I’m not sure I can ever go back to my original Mavic 2 controller with my phone.

Finally a review with some genuine hands on discovery, not just a talking head. Thanks so much.
Very nice review, I love the ease of setup with no phone/tablet required 👌
Great video. You are very instructive and well informed. Thank you. I'm getting one tomorrow :)
Thorough piece of work. Thanks from the UK.
Thanks for the review.
awesome iam so glad i waited omg i was going to get one but i hear about this controller n decided to wait cool so SPRING here i come
Great looking product I have to say. If ever I’m in the market for a new drone then this setup would be strongly considered.
Waiting to see how it works in hot weather. Summertime in Texas would be a good test.
Many thanks, Kelly for this great review of a fantastic - but pricey - new product from our friends at DJI.
Great review. Thanks for the detail and multi-sessions. I am not an Android guy, did you get feel for it being able to operate the Litchi app.
Nice review Kelly, thanks for sharing .
So envious that you've got yours already!! Good video!
I love my DJi-SC. I live in NV and it's 95-105* all summer long, so having a cell phone NOT over heat and dead by 3pm is nice.
I just hope this controller is good for ALL DJI drones moving forward! Great investment in my eyes, Great controller!
Very cool unboxing and testing video. Great information 👍👍
Thanks for another informative, fun, well done review. I love the convenience of this vs putting on another phone or iPad screen. Man, I hate the price on it, but I suppose it's mainly because of the really good screen. I'm just wondering if you might ever want to put a hood on it, even though the screen is so nice and bright? Wondering if they even make a good hood that fits it well? I know I'm kind of picking at straws here. It looks like a great, ready to go well made nice and bright controller. Thanks again for the review. Marc.
Great review, very thorough. 👍
nice vid - by the way the sticks on the back are what you meant to use when on the go (as like done the standard mavic controller with the sticks located in the base of the controller for storage) - the sticks in the bag/box you receive are the spare ones.
Thanks!
Received the new dji controller on Thursday...I gotta say it's pretty sweet. The video connection is very strong and the display at 1080P is super bright. Can't tell you the number of times I cursed the blinding sunlight which ended my flight as I could not see my screen. Also, not having to connect wires, use my phone/iPad or a sun hood is priceless!
This thing saves me a lot of time on setup. It’s expensive but so is my time.
(Most recent software)
I use the smart controller for 4 different drones, makes things a lot simpler.
4 drones: M2P, M2Z, Enterprise, Dual (commercial use). After initially linking all my aircraft , they’re listed in Aircraft Management menu. Just open the menu and select the drone. After that one lands I can then select another drone and I’m good to go. This setup is great for commercial jobs that require multiple drones.
thank you for this review
Very in-depth informative video I gotta get one
Looks like you need a drone lawn mower! lol
Awesome looking controller! Love the screen
The screen is very bright and very sharp!
8:19 Now fly very low... so you can use the drone to mow the lawn 😆
Nice video. I worked with the smart controller before. I loved it. And this afternoon I expect my own. Can't wait. Too bad it is too rainy today. I would have loved to get out and do some flying.
One question: I do have some waypoints stored on the iPad I used before. Is there a way to copy them over to the smart controller?
Awesome sharing! Thank you!
Excellent review Kelly!! Really great controller. If I had a M2P or M2Z, I'd get one
Hi there. First of all thank you for your time and sharing all your work. I am working in broadcast filming events by drone live. I am having problems with 1080p 50p . Broadcast live feeds wanted 1080 50i. I am looking for some solutions. I am using transmitter and feeding my footage from my phantom 4 advanced plus. Quality on tv awful. What you van recommend for me in your experience. I would appreciate your help. Thank you.
A very nice review of the new DJI Smart Controller, Kelly. It looks like the new controller come's with all the input and accessories that are on the original CrystalSky Monitor. Yup, it seems like you need to update you micro SD Card to a 100mb speed card. Your first test of the unit looks very smooth and clean, and you need a microfiber cloth to keep the screen clean from fingerprinters, LOL! Thanks to you and Phillip for the onsite testing, take care!
I have the Ultra Bright Crystal Sky monitor for my Mavic Pro. Definitely a must for sunny days. Anything on battery life? Or will that come in a future video? DJI makes great stuff but I wish they built more backward and lateral compatibility with their controllers. At least they give you the option to select the new Mavic 2 with the smart controller at a discount.
Very nice in depth review. Thanks
Reminds me of my controller with my blade chroma drone. Funny how things go full circle.
I’m so jealous watching your 360 obstacle avoidance in action. I love my trusty Mavic Pro, but her younger brother sure does have some fancy features.
It seems like a really awesome controller and I would love to get it for my Mavic 2 Pro! It’s definitely expensive but seems worth it!
So how are you liking this one? Great review Kelly, have a great weekend!
hello. how often does the controller require an update? Also, how's the battery life in the controller?
Olá
A distância continua a mesma com esse rádio ou ele teve um aumento de potência com esse Novo?
Vale a pena?
Thumbs up ere', great review and info and nice to see it for real - many thanks for sharing the info :)
Great Video! Are we able to run GS Pro or other apps from the remote?
Is the range and connectivity issues between the controller and iPhone X that existed way better with this? I would like a DJI product that is fast enough to keep up with me while I ride my motorcycle like the inspire 2 but don’t think you that it has any auto tracking features does it through the compatible controller/remote?
Hi is the battery changeable and how long be for you must change them. Thanks
Roger
Nice controller question do you still fly the 3DR solo? Can you do a video of the old drones versus new ones thanks
A great review 👍👍👍👍
That's an awesome controller! Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you knew why your RTH icon is green were mine is yellow. Is there any difference? Thanks
back when I bought my 2 drones this was one of the deciding factors plus the removable camera why I went with the GoPro Karma. I know now that was a mistake but I didn't have a smart phone at the time and I loved the controller. Looks like I will have to purchase the Mavic Pro 2 and this controller. Great information and love the videos Good job
Awesome review!
I've narrowed it down to the Autel Evo or the M2Z with Smart Controller.
Subbed!
Pm Tips you will get a lot of joy out of M2Z, I own both(Evo & M2Z).
Looking to get a new DJI drone. Coming off the mavic Pro, I tossed between the pro 2 or zoom. What’s your thoughts ?
I have a question for you ... how are you configuring the saving of videos and photos? Do the photos save on the drone or on the remote? If on the remote do they save directly onto the sd card or do you transfer the photos and videos later to the sd card?
Nice review, just recieved my mavic 2 pro and smart controller today so enjoying your video. What does the SD card in the controller record? I assume the camera writes full res to a card in the aircraft?
Can i ask 1 thing. Is this controller still able to view real time maps just as i did on my phone?
thanks for the informative, great review!
Thanks for watching!
Though it's a bit costly I think this unit is a wonderful addition to your equipment pack. Fantastic review Kelly, one thing I didn't see you mention is the "touch screen gimbal control" where you can tap + hold on the screen and move the camera. Did you happen to notice if it has that feature? Though I'm willing to bet it does because it's part of the app. It would be nice to know for sure.
400 AGL ~ DJI doesn’t seem to say although this crystalsky controller states it supports additional Apps and has the new GO SHARE feature which some might find useful. Bet it does the press/hold and move gimbal feature MEL.
Yes it's definitely feature of the app. I saw some guy use it on his phone, way before this controller was introduced. So you can use it also with "old" controller
@@martinsurovy427 I know it works on other drones with stock r/c units, It works with my Inspires, Mavic 2's and Pro Platinum and also works with my P4P.
Wow so exciting
Hey there. Perhaps out of subject, what do you think of fz2500 that you are using to film? Possible for a full review sometimes?
When will I be able to get one for my Spark??? Great vid as usual:)
Ok so does that new controller support goggles and Epson moverio glasses? I would be very interested in finding out before I buy.
Nice controller!! I love my Yuneec ST10+ and ST16+ controllers with the tablets built in. It is so nice not having to use my phone.
Shawn Ide Studios reminds me of my old blade chroma controller. Just a bit higher end.
@@SeanOzz yeah... I think the Blade Chroma controller and my ST10+ are the same controller.
Does anyone know if the smart controller supports multiple model memory? If you have more than one Mavic 2 (A pro and a zoom) can one controller be used with both drones to the extent that you can quickly and easily switch between either of the drones utilizing only a single smart controller?
Let's work on mowing the backyard now you got the controller working 😎
how do you know how far you can fly with the smart controller before it loses connection? is there a warning somewhere or you just fly til it says lost connection return home?
Ken Heron is shaking his head - pinch, pinch, pinch!!
Which is the batter drone mavic 2pro & mavic 2zoom ? Please sir say mee 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Would this controller work with the mavic air 2? Would it be worth using with the air 2 in comparison to the regular controller?
That was the most thorough review I've seen of anything. Great job mate and thanks for your efforts.
Thanks. Much appreciated!
Question : how to control the gimbal movements on the smart controller ? Like to recenter the gimbal , pan left to right or right to left and up an down the final on the smart controller ? On the left toggle is only going up and down for me .
Can you put a lanyard or neck strap on it in case you drop it? DJI says it's delayed in US until FCC goes back to work.
The sticks on the back of the drone are the ones your meant to use...
The slots to put them in is there so if you need to pack it into a bag you can put the sticks away so they won't get snapped, also you need a SanDisk extreme pro card, cool that the controller tells you it's to slow though!
I just received my smart controller and love it. When I enter the DJI Go app, the fan speeds up and gets rather loud. It also makes a high pitched whinning noise. Is this normal?
Love it wife and I got them worth every penny
Can you close the stop button window that is showing in the middle lower portion of the screen without stopping the time?
not cheap, but so great controller. no need smart phone anymore. that is great.
I'm curious did DJI provide an update that adds support for the new Wayport feature yet?
Loved your review of the new DJI smart controller. Since I only have a Mavic pro and not the Mavic pro two it won’t do me any good to have one. But I’m glad there’s now a choice even though the controller is 650 bucks, wow. But for what it’s used for I can understand. I also love that you’re using a osmo pocket to record your settings and stuff on the controller. Neat, I love mine too.
Thanks!
Do you know if a screen protector is available yet?
Thanks So much Kelly great review will it work on the P4P V2.0? Again great review
It will not! At least at this time. It only works with Occusync 2.0 devices which is just Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom (and eventually Enterprise). I hear that they plan to open it up to other devices, but who knows.
Rofl i love the intro😂
Awesome stuff can that remote control work for all drones..really.
That tilt up/down problem where it swaps every so often...that happen on all DJI drones?, because it happens on my P3 standard too.
Is this available for the old Mavic Pro
Hi. Nice video. I have 2 questions:
1- Can you set to control the gimbal tilt and pan (move side by side) with the wheels?
2- Do you know if there is also a combo withe the Mavic Enterprise?
Thanks!
Manolo7
1. No, the wheel controls can’t be modified. It can be controlled via the screen though.
2. Not right now. The controller doesn’t have the pilot app on it currently so they have to rectify that first. I would imagine there will be soon though.
Is the android OS on the controller going to be able to stay current with the go app and not be an issue like lie was? Other than that good review.
Did you do a range test with each remotes? If so, what were your results?
Do they have any plans to make it work with 1st mavics??
Hmm! I prefer my 5in Crystal Sky, fits the dji metal plug in bracket without a wire, also it fits all three of my drones without having to fiddle matching each drone to controller, nice if it’s your first set up but there’s no point if you already have a controller. Nice video.
Can you attach a 4G / LTE dongle / modem on the Smart Controller’s USB port? Does it work?
Good video, do you think the controller is over priced? It's more than a spark with fly more and controller .
Great job including the brightness points, most others are missing this point..
you put the spare pair on the controller the ones on the back are the ones to use generally and then take off and put in that bit to not loos them out and about. love the video though
You're really a great reviewer, the best on this controller and I've seen a lot of them. I humbly recommend turning off auto-focus and possibly auto exposure on a couple of your cameras, no disrespect intended.
Good video, i have just ordered one only because of the GPS issues with my apple devices and GO4, i have only once got the gps to work, it always says
Mobile Device GPS Signal Weak. It's location cannot be acquired. Yeah its a bit pricey, if its not what i expect il send it back
Very good review and tuturial but I'll give you one question:
I did not mind having that controller, but! I ask myself what do I do the original?
if the less Dji offered a discount on the original resume I thought better, I say ...
😉🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔👍🇵🇹
Porto4ever Filipe good idea, but I doubt it will happen. You could sell it on eBay or keep it for when you need a more compact set up.
I have both 2 and zoom will i be able to use on both? Thanks
Great review Kelly as always sir! I love that controller, if it ran Litchi which I'm sure it probably wont I'd pull the trigger on it.
Drone Crush it will and does run litchi the same as other CrystalSky devices do. You have to install it with the Amazon store though and potentially re-purchase it. You can read about the process here: flylitchi.com/crystalsky
Good job DJI, nice work @kelly with the review👏 Quick question, does it work with Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual🤔
blue280485 I don’t see why it wouldn’t! It includes the DJI Pilot app. DJI seems pretty ambiguous with what it supports on their site though. They just mention “Mavic 2 and other aircraft equipped with OcuSync 2.0”. I’m supposing that Mavic 2 includes all variants.
@@PhilipUlrich Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I get your point! I didn't see it mentioned in DJI official video and DJI Enterprise website, so just got courious😏
@@blue280485 Yeah, neither Kelly or I have the Mavic 2 Enterprise, let alone the dual. If it's a deciding point to buying, I'm sure the DJI support will be able to answer that.
Follow up on this... The controller does not have the pilot app on it yet.. but the site shows that it should? So I guess the support is "coming soon". :D
I brought a smart controller for my dgi mini 2...I tried for two days to try and get it to bind with this new controller..no one would help me not even dgi themselves even asking them before I purchased..so sent it back and brought a sun shade.and anti glare screen saver..after turning up the brigtness up found my phone realy good to use..big saving..I think the dgi controller needs more work to make them easy to use..or even a updated model with more nits as there is better out there...
Is this smart controller includes all feature of Dji GS Pro ?
I have a question:) You know the files (photos and videos) stored on the SD card inside the Smart Controller. Is it right they are ONLY for viewing on the SC and they can't be loaded onto a computer? ie they are sort of 'image' files and the 'real' files have to been taken off the Drones SD. Thanks in advance.
The built in screen is really nice. I had a small husband drone a couple years ago that had a build in screen. Pretty convenient to have and not have to use your phone. I see this control is not just a display but basically a built in tablet that even surfs the web. Cool stuff indeed. I am thinking my next drone will be a mavic 2.
Does this controller fit into the Mavic 2 Pro GPC case?
This is about my 6th review if the controller I definitely saved the best till last is there a attachment for lanyard I can't see one ????.super review.
Thanks! I have not tried it with a lanyard, but I will.
Nice review! Question: is it finally possible to use 2 controllers in master slave combo? E.g. the old controller AND this new one to let somebody fly the drone in slave operation?
Thanks. I've seen that done with RC airplanes - they call it a "buddy box". I don't think that's possible with this remote.
I mean the Dual controller option, DJI promised it at the launch of the Mavic 2. Recently, they erased this part out of the manual. With the old Mavic pro, it is possible. You have now 2 controllers, you can try it 😁
There’s a video showing this by dji on CZcams. 👍
