    Serious note, FP2 feels so fresh, you could play this without the sequel. While ideally play the first, it's super accessible for vets waiting up to 7 years development, newbies, or anyone not feeling FP1 as much. Surpassed beyond expectations from production to writing, the title theme alone still sends shivers my spine. GalaxyTrail hit a homerun way past the stadium.

    • @marleyskydye_kr
      @marleyskydye_kr Před 9 měsíci +5

      I did. No one really talks about this but I think Milla's story was the darkest. You have less context, which kinda show's how late she was to everything and her lack of understanding. In the dreadnought stage, Lilac's nowhere to be found, Carol starts dying and Torque had to take her off the ship so she had a chance of surviving. When you go to fight Brevon, he implies Lilac is dead and Milla's so scared she barely can speak. After defeating him, instead of just using his knife to mutate Milla like in the other stories, he tries to kill her instead. Fortunately, Lilac appears and attacks him in time though

    Fantastic review! Its shocking how little this game gets talked about online. Freedom Planet 1 blew me away as a 16-year old boy when I first played it, and this sequel casted the same spell on me last year as a 23-year old girl! Can't wait to buy two more copies when the console port releases next month. I don't think I've ever seen another game with this much talent and rawr passion put into it. FP2 is Probably my all-time favourite game now, and I don't imagine any others surpassing it any time soon.
    I've been reading Symphony of Shifting Tides, too after putting it off for a year (due to it being incredibly difficult & expensive to get a copy in my country) and It's absolutely fantastic! I haven't been this invested in a story since I read Lord of the Rings. I probably wouldn't have found it if not for this video, so thank you for recommending it. Verse is now my favourite Freedom Planet character.

Cant wait for the fourth one to release! I made a guide on FP2's steam community hub about Verse with brief profiles for some other characters from SOST, and some of the series' lore. Hopefully my info-dumping will convince some Freedom Planet fans to check it out. I also put a link to this video in the credits of said guide as a thank you for exposing EC to me :3

FP2 is more like a Mega Man Zero game though; there are scripted scenes for speed, but you can tell the devs want you to explore the area and find collectibles. I also appreciate that this game is harder than the original, original had it's hard moments but the bosses are more easily exploitable.

    I was a huge fan and early adopter of Freedom Planet when it released on Steam in 2014. I don't quite remember how I heard of it, but I did get it long before it came to Wii U, let alone PS4. However, while FP2 has been sitting on my Steam wishlist since I could wishlist it, I honestly kind of forgot about it until it seemingly dropped out of nowhere. I haven't been able to play much of FP2 due to work, I have gotten as far as playing the first level with each character to get a feel for them, and my first impressions were overwhelmingly positive. Playing Lilac again was like muscle memory, and Milla, who I already loved playing as in FP1, got even better here. Neera is also great, feeling like a combination of a Sonic character and a MetroidVania Castlevania protagonist. Carol, for ironically being the Sonic stand-in, is my least favorite of the four again, but she's still a major improvement over her FP1 incarnation.

    Honestly the combat is addicting, the only thing I don’t like about it is that the guard feels too inconsistent, and doesn’t give enough s to get out of the way of most of boss attacks. With lilac that complaint is mitigated a bit since she has the blink dash, but I feel like that ability should be more catered toward carol since well, she is the combat centric character

    • @TempestKrimps
      @TempestKrimps Před rokem +6

      the guard is actually very consistent, what i found out about it is that normally it gives you invulnerability for most of the guard's duration (not including the dash), but will grant you full invulnerability (including the dash) if you block a hit within the initial active time, so as lilac it's sometimes good to run into a projectile to block it and use the full invulnerability to dash away

    Many people say that the sequel to a movie or game is often less enthusiastic than the prequel, which in some cases are true. FP1 was great, but FP2 absolutely nailed it, both in story, sprites, cutscenes, gameplay and ofc music. This is how you do a f***ing sequel. It may have lasted about 7 years since the first announcement, but the eternity of waiting was worth it.

    Personally I found the tone of the game to be even more inconsistent than FP1. It doesn't have a torture scene, sure, but the themes it covers are just as if not more dark, and then we get silly moments and jokes during key story moments which murder the tension, and not in a good way. In FP1 the tone shifted more gradually so it felt like the characters are taking things seriously when they get serious. Here it was harder to take it seriously even during the dramatic and dark story beats because the characters wouldn't stop doing funny stuff.
    Specifically, a few moments during Palace Courtyard and Serpentine being a comedy relief character even during Gravity Bubble and Bakunawa. He was at his most serious during his first fight, oddly enough.

      I do actually agree with you on that. I really liked how in the first game, things progressively got more and more serious. The early game is much more lighthearted and chill. Then the characters get arrested and the tone picks up. Carol and Lilac's fight after the Jade Creek level heavily puts it in your face how serious things have gotten. Lilac infiltrates the Thermal Base to save Torque but then gets captured and she's literally shown getting tortured to force information out of Torque. Then the main characters finally meet the big bad himself at the Thermal Base, have a shoot off, then just barely escape with their lives. After, that 2 out of 3 kingdoms finally realize how foolish they've been and decide to work together to take down Brevon

      I also expected Dail to have a big grudge against Serpentine, but he only acknowledges him in a passing manner before the final part of the game where everyone gathers in the palace. Serpentine was one of the invaders that killed your father and brainwashed you into their service, but all you say is "Oh, I guess hard times bring unusual alies" or something. I was expecting him to go like "What's HE doing here?!" and immidietly try to behead the snake in a moment of emotional rage, while everyone in the room tried to pull him away from Serpentine and calmy explain what's the reason for his help.

      Let's not forget that the Freedom Planet series is still taking off and establishing their own identity. Sonic was like that too, it was only in the 3d era that Sonic at a certain point was losing some speed, with only a few promising games coming out in a clutch to keep him going. We don't know if Freedom Planet can go far without suffering similar problems Sonic and other series had. It's a pattern I've noticed with video game series for some finding success in their beginnings and then find struggle at some point. With the development team as current, so long as they strive for improvement, Freedom Planet may go on to have a lasting series, but I will be watching them. FP2 is surprisingly difficult to compare to the original, despite retaining much of the core gameplay loop. I suspect FP1 really gains a lot from its proximity to Genesis/Saturn-era platformers, and its ability to mimic and build atop that mold made it click in a way most retro-style platformers didn't. What I admire most about FP2 is that it abandons that handhold and commits to taking risks. Adding a fourth character with a weapon is a risk. Retooling the cutesy art style - and completely reworking the main protagonist's design - is a risk. Developing a 20 minute-long puzzle-based level is a risk. Making the Story Mode mandatory is a risk. Composing a soundtrack that's not concerned with being catchy is a risk. FP2 may have stumbles here and there, with some levels and a handful of bosses that fall flat, but it's that ambition and confidence that's impossible not to admire.
    I think both games are chasing different emotional responses, too. FP1 was a pedal-to-the-medal, elbows-out romp that kinda works best in a singular binge. That feeling is complimented by that game's superb difficulty curve, and the sum experience resembles that of a film. FP2 is a bit more even-keel, trying to elicit a spectrum of reactions ranging from pulse-pounding to meditative. The switch to hub worlds, the tight pacing of cutscenes, and the branching story acts go a long way to structure the game as something like a season of television. FP1 is a young guitarist aiming to impress, while FP2 struts around like a veteran maestro at the center of an orchestra.

    Also, am I the only one who actually prefers the more simplistic and SD look of Freedom Planet 1? I really like the big-headed sprites in FP1 a lot better, and the backgrounds having a lower resolution and less detail really made them pop for me. FP2's visuals feel a bit... busy, IMHO.

    Honestly, as much as I wanted to love the story, I just found to have some similar flaws to FP1 and it left me very dissapointed overall. Flaws including a crippiling lack of character arcs (what characters show in the first couple cutscenes is what they'll be for the rest of the game), and aside from Milla (who had nothing in FP1) and Neera (who also had nothing), I just think Lilac and Carol are much worse off in FP2 in terms of personality.
    Lilac in FP1 came off as someone who craved to be a hero, maybe even saw it as her destiny, but had a tedency to ignore the dange it could bring to her and others. And by the end of the game she comes back uniting everyone to fight off Brevon, triumphantly in the Holo-Dragon. She had a character arc, despite the Torture Scene putting a dent on it. She didn't need to be special to make a difference.
    In FP2 however, well, she's always clinging to the past. She either is angry or crying over her past/water dragon heritage ALL THE TIME. First with the Magister who at least puts her at her place, and then at Spade who got given a terrible plot detail of stealing her from her home as a egg, for no good reason, and with Merga it's most of the time since she's designed to be Loredump The Villain.
    With Carol I haven't played her unique campaing, but going off how she's always just being sassy and jokey ALL THE TIME, I can already say she's terrible inferior to FP1 where she was all that but at times tried to ground Lilac back into reality (which eventually leads to the pre-Thermal Base cutscene).
    In general, FP2 manages to be inferior in story for me, even with all of FP1 flaws, there was a heart and mark of greatness that never was realized inside it. FP2 is mostly loredumping and hardly character development.
    I would still say FP2 is a game worth playing, but I hardly will say its story is anything to write home about, or that it managed to outdo the original by a significant margin.

    • @millabasset1710
      @millabasset1710 Před rokem

      I don't know what you mean by lore dumping? The first Freedom Planet didn't really have a story, you simply get the Kingdom Stone and stop Brevon, the "story" is really the interaction between the girls and the situations they face. Freedom Planet 2 might not have the best story, it at least tries to have one. I prefer Merga over Brevon, she has more personality and at least her boss fight has some variety; Brevon's fight you're continually running in one area and you can easily land hits while dodging bombs.

    This game is almost perfect, everything is so well done!
    MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD DON'T OPEN IF YOU DON'T BEAT THE GAME IN BOTH ENDINGS.
    This game is a masterpiece, but I have to say that the secret ending and (most of) time capsules sucks. Honestly the normal ending is good, but could be even better if it gives an advice like "you can't always change people's minds". But no, Lilac just run to find Merga worried about her... I mean, if it's just Lilac being imature it's ok, because she has a pure heart. The secret ending I can't defend, it's terrible. Seriously, just why? Collecting every time capsule to reach an hard as heck bossfight against Syntax (I don't know if in normal is that hard because I beat it on hard mode) for what? Merga change her mind because pangu reminds the LoVe StOrY of her and Cordelia. More than half of the time capsules that you collect is abour that story... *WHO CARES* I want to know about Lilac's parents, how Milla came to Avalice, why Cory and Carol was so far from each other before FP2, the past of Lilac and Carol on Red Scarves, things like that you know? But no, they shove it down our throats, and if I disagree probably many people will call me homophobic or something like that... (what don't makes any sense because I know about the game developer be a trans women, and I have nothing against it), the story of this game in general is so good... To be honest, the sequel feels half-baked. Yes, it has great gameplay, interesting level concepts/callbacks, VA direction is decent, pixelart is fantastic and the likes but besides that, the worldbuilding is a nice improvement from the first game, however the story campaigns are a jumbled mess (there's hardly any movement in terms of character arcs, it's more of a deconstruction of characters / retcons / plotholes / forced plots & story twists that are unneeded, except for some things & instances), new characters are alright to terrible, some items are missing/unrequired, the audio design is awkward, the levels go on too long or otherwise, some music are good but other tracks aren't fitting or could had used more work.
    Just because a game looks good doesn't mean it's polished (even if they had a long time to address these issues), but if you enjoy the game, have fun with it. You vote with your wallet.

      In terms of aesthetics, character development and design, I can agree. I'm not fond of Lilac's new designs. They should've kept blue as her main outfit color. Her hair looks off, and her nearly-completely-removed face markings make her look less iconic and more like a purple human
      The artist (TysonTan) is very good, but his art style just doesn't suit Freedom Planet to me. They still could've kept them cartoon-y without them looking like Sonic ocs
      I dislike Milla's character in it. Starting her off more confident defeats the whole point of character development. I get she's meant to seem more confident, but she just feels like a younger and annoying version of Lilac. They could've kept some traits the same (kinda like glitter peace in precure for an example) while still showing she's growing. Lilac staying pretty calm through everything felt a bit off too considering she snapped multiple times in the last game with far less pressure
