There have been many cheating devices throughout the history of both the Pokémon series and Nintendo's lines of handheld consoles. From GameShark to CodeBreaker to Game Genie to Action Replay to even fanmade solutions made out of cobbled-together PCBs and raw curiosity, Pokémon fans have wanted to see just how far they could push - or break - their games since the series' inception.
One such product that tried to aid in this was the Pelican Monster Brain, also known as the BrainBoy. Made in several variations, today on Stuff We Play, we're looking at one made specifically for cracking Pokémon Gold and Silver Versions (NA) wide open!

Thank you for watching! - Hry
Fun fact: Earlier this year, I co-created an hour-long look at a lost Pokémon Broadway musical, complete with interviews with several of those involved and featuring a TON of newly found archival footage! Give that a watch here: czcams.com/video/-fukHks29cU/video.html&t
I remember seeing the Monster Brain in a Toys R Us ad that my grandparents got on a Saturday afternoon, and I bugged my Pop Pop to take me to get one. He did, and I spent the rest of the day and night using it. It blew my tiny, 8-year-old mind to pieces.
I still have one of these. I used it a lot when I was kid to save my files so I could play them over again. Using the colorizer to change palettes was pretty fun too.
I always found colourizers in general to be really fascinating
Pokemon red and blue could do this by holding a direction and pressing B at start up if I remember correctly, still glad Gameboy Colors were invented though lol
Love videos like these! Covering obscure gaming accessories like the Monster Brain is fascinating to watch! There’s not that many videos on this device, so it’s great to see more detailed information brought to light about it. Keep up the good work!
I remember buying this as a kid and getting Celebi that night and feeling so powerful. Could teach Dugtrio and Jynx to fly for curious visuals on Stadium 2, load Pokemon to 100 with max stats. It was awesome.
I remember saving my allowance to buy a monster brain. Good times. I also remember my cousin "cloning" Pokemon into my game. To clone Pokemon you would use a link cable and initiate the trade and quickly unplug the cable before it completed the trade and somehow the Pokemon would end up on both cartridges.
Just got one of these again after years of not owning one, i remember a distinct lack of videos/info on YT about this so great upload!! I have the purple label variant which appears to have a few minor differences. It works with all english pokemon gameboy games from gen 1 and 2 but not the Japanese ones from my personal testing with it years ago, never seen this gold version with "brain boy" on the sticker! Such cool little devices
I used to have so much stuff hooked up to my gbc, that my mom joked that it would get up on its own and walk off.
I loved my magnifying light most, I think (nobody realized I needed glasses for a few years), but my monster brain was essential for me too. Its backup saving capabilities are the only reason my oldest pokemon silver file still exists.
I had a BrainBoy as a kid with Gold and Silver both and I used it all the time and it got me tons of extra hours in the games, even in Red and Yellow with the time machine. I wouldn't have gotten as big into Pokemon if not for the BrainBoy giving me the opportunity to play with so much.
Looks like the Monster Brain and GBC Game Shark employ the same physical design that official non-backwards compatible GBC games have that prevents the power switch from being turned on when they're inserted into the original Game Boy. If you had put your Crystal version into the brick then you would've had the same problem.
There is still a way to turn on the Game Boy when those types of games are inserted by slightly disassembling the system, but after booting up, it'll just display a message that the game isn't compatible with the original GB. So it would've been interesting to see what the Monster Brain and Game Shark display when they're turned on in the brick.
Also, I'm hoping that someone's dumped the ROM for the Monster Brain, mostly so that I can find a full version of that neat menu song.
That's really fascinating! I find it doubly odd here, too, as the MB is compatible with the Pocket & Light - just not the brick!
I’ve had mine for about 18 years now I think. I keep it as mint as I can, it is a keystone of my childhood. No idea when I got it or how but I’ve kept it like a family heirloom
I've heard of Game Shark and Game Genie, but this has flown under my radar until now.
That music gives me nostalgia...
Hoping you will replace the batteries on your US Pokemon carts and revisit this device in a follow up video!
Never heard of the monster brain. Interesting video
My favorite Pelican accessory is a pair of headphones with an adapter to GBA SP; rather useful.
Even though I myself weren’t around for the GB era of Pokémon but this is truly a strange little cheat device.
Yeah I had the OG Gameshsrk for the Gameboy Color. That thing was as big as the Gameboy itself!
I had a Monster Brain for my Gold Version and I had to convince my little classmates that there was a secret Pokémon at the end of the Dex called Celebi.
I don’t remember where I picked this up when I was young. Maybe a flea market. I think. And I’m not even sure why I bought it and thought it would work when I was so young. I remember it working 1000 times better than I thought it was going to work when I started using it
Still have it
I had this one and it was great being able to get event Pokémon and shit.
Well I can see why the device is recomended only for Pocket and Color... In a OG one just not fit... Btw I tought the Gen 2 games were only GBC compatible (Clear Carts)
Only Crystal is a clear cart! Gold and Silver themselves work completely on black and white systems and even have their own Super Game Boy borders programmed in!
@@StuffWePlay Is good to know that
My monster brain works great even saved an old save from Pokemon Red, and Crystal; My silver, gold, & yellow have up and walked away though apparently...Trust no one.
at least there are roms and emulators 🏴☠🏴☠
I have one! but mine is called "BrainBoy"
Counter measure 😅
Based
Thank you
20 minutes of trying and failing to use a device for children... Very frustrating to watch
