Freedom Planet's Development: From Sonic Fan Game to Cult Classic | The Art of...Success?

- Freedom Planet is a video game created by GalaxyTrail that was funded on Kickstarter in 2013 and originally released in 2014. Despite those behind it having little experience with the video game industry, the game managed to go on to be a cult classic and even has a sequel in the works. Through research, interviews, and analysis, we've got the full story of Freedom Planet's Development: From Sonic Fan Game to Cult Classic. This isn't so much an "Art of Failure" episode (though stylistically and thematically it's similar, hence why it's included in that series) so I guess it's more of The Art of...Success?

I can not believe my spade recordings got here, cool.
Edit: and my torque recording too.
I'm so glad that Freedom Planet happened in its own original form. Galaxytrail and the franchise has a great potential, especially since they're working on Freedom Planet 2. I really hope they succeeds and they're doing great, and even after!
Also: Thanks for doing this video. I think it was brilliant and well-scripted. I think you should give your shoulder a little pat for it!
Thanks so much! I'm glad I got to help tell their story :)
What a fantastic history lesson. This was wonderful to watch
hearing the history of this team of indie developers is so inspiring! ngl i got pretty thrilled when i played FP1 and its so well made i had to buy the sequel right after finishing the first game (i always wait for a sale but this game got me good lol), hope to see more of this game in the future cuz it deserves all the sucess and recognition it gets and if FP3 ever gets release eventually i'll be buying it 100%
It's a huge shame that the 3DS version never released. It'd be so cool if they tackle it again in the future for a somewhat limited release as a collector's item, even if it has to be exclusive to the New 3DS.
I’m looking forward to the sequel for sure!
Same here! I can't wait!
Me too!
But I hope sonic would be in 3.
@@LeilaRWilson so am I
I hope that there will be a 3 to
Freedom Planet is the best Sonic game now
I remember actually reading an article after it came out titled something like "Freedom Planet is the Best Sonic Modern Sonic Game"
I bet you haven't even played it
I liked it better than sonic mania.
Wow! Given DiDuro's experience from developing FP1 I now understand why he's pacing himself with FP2 (as well as refraining from donation pledges)
Still, tho, I can't wait for FP2 regardless of when it's released!
(Heck, I only started playing FP after a friend gave me the game around a year ago and I've been super hooked since!)
Amazing video! I always wanted a video that went deep into the development of this game. Never knew that's how the benches were programmed!
Oh and uhh... at 21:45 is that Dr Light and Dr Wily?!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
And yeah haha! That specific picture was him being amazed at a cosplay duo of Dr. Light and Dr. Wily stopping by and getting addicted to a demo of the game
@@StuffWePlay
Don't blame him. That was a great cosplay!
This was a really cool video! I like the documentary style a lot, and the editing was stellar! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you so much! I've been wanting to cover this one for a while and I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I really hope DiDuro doesn't nearly put himself out doing FP2's cutscenes. He's being smart in holding off on a concrete release date this time around. As much as I love the game, and am really looking forward to 2, DiDuro's and the rest of the team's health is important!
This video has aged awkwardly, "he" is a "she" now.
@@Aperson-62 Yeah, I twigged onto it the moment I noticed people using the new pronouns and calling her Sabrina.
another great video and glad I could help :)
Thanks dude! I'm glad you could be a part of this one :)
23:32 I didn't notice that Milla rapidly kicked her legs under the table until now.
Thanks for this video, re-installing the game now to beat all 3 campaigns all over again! :D
Glad I could be of help haha! Definitely well worth it. Milla in particular I enjoyed going back to for this doc, as I hadn't given her much time prior
@@StuffWePlay Milla's campaign was super challenging, felt like it was the hard mode of the game, I had to re-learn the game thanks to how much I was getting trashed, lol.
21:12 torque's gameplay is what i imagined a 2D Ratchet & Clank would be like.
It looks really neat! Maybe he'll make it into FP2!
@@StuffWePlay I hope so :)
Freedom Planet is my shit! I love this game. It was the main inspiration for my current project and my goal as a game designer is to one day release a game half as good as Freedom Planet.
I believe in you man! If you have the drive and the skills (or drive to practice) then I know you have what it takes!
@@StuffWePlay Thanks bro!!! And keep up the good work on your channel! :)
I look forward to bringing Freedom Planet 2 to my channel!
Great job once again. I can't believe that I've never heard of this game before after all these years. I am very excited to play this one!
Thank you tons!
Wow, your channel need more attention... what a amazing quality video production! And thank to you a lot of people know the datailed story of the masterpiece FP is! (Sorry if my english isn't good)
An amazing video thanks for this it really opened my eyes on the whole development process and made me actually love Freedom Planet even more, I didn't even know that was possible as it already think its the best 2d platformer on the modern side of things and the fact I can use the nintendo online megadrive 3 button controller is amazing to.
That man reading Richard Naik's review of Freedom Planet has a truly graphically impressive voice. I guess the guy read Brad Jones' review was ok as well.:-) But yeah fantastic video as always man. You've improved massively at presenting this series in a very short amount of time.Freedom Planet 1 is awesome & I is hype for Freedom Planet 2!
One of those reviewers sounded like the type of guy who'd let's play this game ;)
@@StuffWePlay I'm sure he did! Twice now! With a third planned possibly soon to do the one character he has left to do in preparation for Freedom Planet 2! ;-)
yeah who was that guy with the sexy flat shaded voice
I met the developers at Miami Supercon before the game was released, even back then I knew the game was a hit
This is the best game I am suprised it worked at all
I need to learn how to edit flashy text and title cards like this. Great job dude!
Thanks man! Really appreciate the kind words :)
Great video about great game. DiDuro you are the best
@The Switch Port, it's a shame they never bothered to patch the shooter levels reverting back to default button control scheme and ignoring the settings the player may have set.
I'm so glad that this game never got supported by the Ouya console. If it did, it would've definitely gone into obscurity.
>FP2 expected to release by 2020
I hope so! I have plans related to Freedom Planet and they require being this damn patient for the game to come out in full.
I promise they're all hard at work on the new game! But also, they're trying to avoid the burnout they faced during FP1's development
It took *four tries* to be deemed good enough for Sony? o.0 Sony's "rigorous quality assurance testing" didn't stop Life of Black Tiger from arriving on the Playstation Store...
Anyway, solid documentary. I know it's been a long wait, but I'm eagerly looking forward to the day when FP2 finally gets released. I loved the first one.
"FP2 is currently expected to be released in 2020"
Ouch. At least they're mostly done now, and i have a feeling that it'll be worth the wait. Though i do wish it was handled better and i feel like they should have a release date by now, at least it has improvements over FP1.
I actually had Sabrina DiDuro on my podcast awhile back and I think it's fair to say that the release date is "it's out when it's out"
I love this game
Same here!
Take notes Sega.
Stephen Diduro is super cute. :3
His hair is, quite frankly, incredible
Somehow I missed this film. Very hyped for FF2!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm hyped too!
this game is AWESOME!!!!
I wasn't too happy with the "physical edition" backer reward. Just a bunch of home-burnt CDR's (one for game, 3 for soundtrack) in a DVD case meant for 8 discs.
this game just beautifull :interesting.full lenght levels, amazing music, modern indie design, with pleasure exploring locations:) then spark from lakefeperd copied a lot of aspects in his game from freedom planet.very proud of galaxytrail and waiting long for 2 sequel!:)
I have the game and just couldn't get into it after the first level. I just feel like the top running speed is weird since you can't reach it by just running, it throws me off
I love the games
I got the game for "free" thanks to my nintendo, and i have enjoy it
This is a certified cult classic
What is the game at 1:40?
Dust: An Elysian Tail
👍
3:38 No steam Sherlock! Everyone knows that Sonic is what made Sega famous.
New profile picture!
Yeah! I figured it was time to update, plus apparently people connect better with faces
Stuff We Play 👍
Why no Xbox version?
I dunno. Why no Ouya version?
If I can't play it on my Amazon Echo I don't want it
They should port this to the Xbox
Just want to point out that DiDuro has since came out as trans and goes by Sabrina these days. I absolutely loved the game and look forward to Freedom Planet 2, and her coming out gave me more reason to support her work.
"Graphics are pretty rough looking."
It's a huge shame that the 3DS version never released. It'd be so cool if they tackle it again in the future for a somewhat limited release as a collector's item, even if it has to be exclusive to the New 3DS
