- Sonic Unleashed was originally released in 2008 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 2, and is known in Japan as Sonic World Adventure, and has since has received ports to the Xbox One and even a weird mobile phone version! Today we're focusing on the HD (360 and PS3) version of the game, which has been polarizing over the years due to additions such as the Werehog. But is this now over 10 year old game an underrated classic, or a frustrating game that's barely decent? Well, today James and Honest Biggums are going over Why Sonic Unleashed is NOT a Bad Game!

Naw lol. The lighting in Unleashed is beautiful, but everything else looks like a blurry mess and is further weakened by all the frame rate drops. Generations graphics >>>> Unleashed graphics.

It's basically a few relatively small tweaks from being Mario Odyssey tier, possibly better.
Once you have unlocked some of the Werehog's combat skills, in addition to making the actual fighting more entertaining, they can be used to extend Sonic's jump significantly (arguably even more so than Cappy did in Mario Odyssey), both vertically and horizontally, allowing you to reach certain collectibles, and bypass some of the more finicky platforming challenges.
Since this game was the first sonic game I ever played it will always have a special place in my heart.
Now hold on now. You can't start a video about how Sonic Unleashed isn't bad with the line "I was the guy who said Sonic Forces isn't bad". I can't handle that much in one go. You gotta spread that kind of stuff out.

Me too. It's my favourite 3D Sonic game. I love it more than Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Colours and even Sonic Generations!
My first sonic game was Sonic rush adventure for the ds, but I love my two first sonic games the same! 😄
I think Unleashed destroys Colors and Generations from all points of view: Story, gameplay, level design, game length, graphics, artstyle, creativity, innovation and characters.
(Specifically the HD version)
I prefer Colors. It's more platforming than speed, which I kind of prefer.

Yeah, a slow, boring and blocky 2D mess where you need to press switches in order to move forward and having Sonic controlling like a tank while doing precise platforming, with those terrible Wisps that butchered the level design.

Because Unleashed's control was not slippery at all, because it doesn't hace a delayed jump, because the Light speed dash was responsive all the time, because empty hallways were you don't do anything but boost in a straight line are better than 2d sections with actually interesting platforming and power ups that add replay value.

The game was good but they over exaggerate on the werehog stages. It didn't take hours and you only boost if held x and not locked on

This is on my list of Sonic games that NEED a remake, with a few improvements such as controls and the Night Stages. Apart from those, keep everything else the same, and youve got yourself an amazing game most will enjoy.
I wanted to play this game on a good quality on PC so bad. I either have to get an overpriced capture card or go full emulator.

The HD version of Sonic Unleashed is my absolute most favorite game of all time.
It baffles my mind that they didn't give this game a re-release. It could have used it. Adabat wouldn't stab out current gen consoles in the graphics card, the homing attack could be moved back on the A/X button (which should have been the case from the start) and they could implement an option to disable that horrible night time battle music. Oh and drop shadows in Eggmanland, maybe split it in 2, maybe give us more time for those button inputs above bottomless holes.

What if I told you Sonic Unleashed for the PS3 was my very first time I ever played a Sonic game? Because it was. Back in 2009, I had NEVER heard of Sonic before until my mom got me Sonic Unleashed. And while it was a little difficult at first, I managed to get better at it and eventually love it. However, I was only 8 when I played it, and I had no idea Sonic was a huge franchise with a big fan base that was in kind of a dark spot at that time, but even then, despite not knowing about Sonic 06 or the fan base, I still loved Unleashed. But, as I’m grown up now, seeing people like Cygnus Destroyer (AKA LJN Defender), and Antdude talk crap about it and calling it worse than Sonic 06, and seeing so many ungrateful and harsh Sonic fans talk badly about the game I grew up loving broke my heart. 😔 I understood the flaws about it, like the Werehog and metal collecting, but again, I never heard of Sonic before I played Unleashed, and I actually thought the Werehog was cool, and added more variety and fun to the game. But then, I found your review of it, Stuff We Play, and seeing you guys not call it bad and guilty and worse than Sonic 06, like Cygnus Destroyer did, it made me feel happy again. 😊 In my opinion, your review of it being much more forgiving, and giving it a chance, I think your review is the best review of Unleashed on the Internet. And I wanted to say thank you. 😊

What if sonic unleashed was remade? For me fix the controls for modern sonic and for the werehog, have it like the adventure games or lost world. Take out the battle music, make chip sound like a little kid like the Japanese voice actor and make Eggman say "get a load of this" also take out the medal collecting or have it like Wii/ps2. Have a mini game where you play the mobile version of sonic unleashed.

The werehog battle theme gets so fucking annoying in this game and it’s a goddamn shame. the theme sounds so fun to play in jazz band, it just sounds amazing from a composition standpoint. it’s utterly tragic how the overuse of this amazing theme has shoved it into obscurity forever.
Cool, a video talking about Unleashed. That's great. What's not great is everyone bring up "06 sucked" all the damn time. It's like every sonic video ever somehow NEEDS to trash that game. It really is annoying..... I dont even mind the game.. Sonic forces, sonic boom, and sonic and the secret rings are all worse anyways... The gameplay may not be the greatest but some of the characters are really good in it... Like shadow and mephiles.... Also I dont dislike sonic forces because gameplay but its stories and characters sucked and the gameplay is only average

I do agree with most of this vid but I actually like the werehog levels except for hulaska that level is so frustrating I do not mind the sun and moon medals Especially on my second playthrough this game always gets better the more you play it.

It's not too bad length wise! Certainly longer than Colours or Forces, but around the same length as the Adventure games
In my opinion, this is a fantastic game. Yeah the controls are sometimes wonky and the werehog was executed poorly but overall what's here is great. This is my favorite boost game while colors is a second.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is probably my favorite game ever. I know the Werehog isn't that good, but I know how to have fun with him. And you can too. Sonic Team needs to port this game, like, now. And they should fix up some issues when they do, like the controls, making Werehog levels a bit shorter, making the battle music play less, etc. I don't really mind the medals that much, though I do like how you get them automatically in Unwiished. I played the PS2 version before the HD version, so I have some nostalgia for it. The final level being hellish feels appropriate. Could probably be shorter though. That's another thing they should change, lol. I think the final boss is just alright. The Unwiished version is good tho. The story of this game is absolutely brilliant. This game could be better, and I sure hope it gets that treatment. And yes, I am a diehard Sonic fan. I've been in love with this funny blue boi for practically my whole life. He means the world to me.

It took me 10 or so years to actually beat sonic unleashed because I absolutely could not beat eggmanland
Then again I was like 7 at the time, so that may explain it
They should remaster unleashed and add a few things such as shadow for daytime missions and knuckles for night missions, fix the homing attack to A button and fix a few glitches, if they do all this it would be a perfect game

Actually I don't think the final boss wasn't bad (you actually don't die and go back to the Egg Dragoon you just go back to the same place you died from) plus I kinda liked the Werehog levels I mean yeah it's not as fast but it makes me feel like I'm playing on other fighting games and the Wii version it's kinda of an "eh it's ok" game but still the daytime levels in the Wii version don't make up what it did in Black Knight or Sonic And the Secret Rings

Sonic unleashed is my number favorite Sonic game it's so beloved & the most popular games in the series even to this day people say it's bad to them cause one they suck at it or there toxic because they couldn't get it & get butthurt watching others have fun or they complain it's too fast that let's u know there toxic fake fans plus the werehog gameplay was awesome it was something interesting we never see in sonic before not only that games like black knight I like that cause it was something new not the same but people are dumbass not liking new things in series like this or even Mario & nobody complain about having something new cause it's the same thing oddsey try being new but I loved it tho but off topic people opinions about this game are bad opinions there toxic

11:07 i feel like its not fair to throw generations in there like that. It was made to celebrate the history of sonic by revamping old levels into the boost & classic sonic gameplay. It sounds like ur criticizing the game for what it was exactly advertised to do. Plus it was the first to ever do this. Who woulda knew lost world and forces would try to repeat the same stuff, but its not gens fault, nor should we lump gens in with those blatant rehashes. As thats a solid game start to finish

@@MichaelF267 unleashed is a terrible game to start off if you're just getting into 3D sonic. It's actually tough, and well a bit too tough. Unleashed requires more than a standard Mario game it's not a bad thing but if you're an average gamer who doesn't know much about sonic game then I suggest waiting to play unleashed

I had generations for the 3ds, I had Colors for the wii, I had Rush and Rush Adventure for the DS... and i was terrible at every single one of them.
So I might just stick with the 2d sonic games.

I would like to point out that this is a game in which the main character travels around the world to stop his main villain who is doing a bad thing WHICH is also the plot to Super Mario Odyssey FOR ONCE the blue blur has a stepping stone against Mario
I'm playing through it now and I'm not feeling it at all. Night stages are too long and the day stages seem to have slippery controls.

I didn't play Unleashed more then the first boost stage, but i really liked it, i'd say though, while Unleashed looks better graphically, i LOVED that style of Colours. Generations was also nice looking. I can't say about the Werehog stages, but i've liked Colours and Generations the most, especially Colours, but Unleashed also looks pretty good and that intro cutscene is beautiful in Unleashed.
I'd say maybe give it a shot or, if you have Generations on PC, try out the Unleashed Project mod!

Unleashed is the last technically good Sonic game. I miss good story, creative stages, (mostly) fair difficulty and memorable characters.
If I were to do another styled video like this, it'd be on Colours. Colours was the last mainline 3D Sonic game to truly have an identity of its own.
@@StuffWePlay I think the werehog part unnecessary and understand the need to make the game last more hours because of some market dumb sense of the 60 USD games should last 40 hours of gameplay more or less. But I think the story still better develop than Colors and they should have used Knuckles instead for the beat n up gameplay. Everyone would love a Sonic & Knuckles Adventure. =P

The things with Unleashed that... Yeah, the Werehog stages was bad, but in that time SEGA does bring new ideas to the game which I respect that even tho is isn’t for a Sonic game. In present they just filled the Sonic franchises with nostalgia and classic Sonic. It do not look like I hate the classic era or anything, but if you gonna make a game about a iconic character like Sonic, do not splitting him into two.

No. The only reason people don't like the werehog is because it's a weird concept for a Sonic game. Also because somewhere down the line, somebody decided that Sonic should be entirely about mindlessly blitzing through levels and completely ignore it's roots as a fast paced *platformer*. Hence why you see so many people trashing on the night stages even though they're pretty fun in their own right, especially in the Wii version where platforming actually takes priority over combat.

I said this on the Biggums' video a day ago I'll say it now if we had a battle theme irl that played over every battle & argument we'd be annoyed into world peace!
Good choice on doing the Xbox One/360 port as the 360 version is better than the PS3 port in many ways & the One's 360 emulation actually fixes alot of the fps issues the game still had more so on the X now all it needs is an X patch like Generations had & we can then truly appreciate the beauty of the game.

While I still personally believe that "Sonic Unleashed" is the most overrated game in the Sonic franchise, I used to generalize ALL "Sonic Unleashed" fans as toxic pretentous butthurts because of my own personal runins with those types of fans. Those who act like I'm wrong for having any issues with it, and even more wrong for prefering "Sonic Colors". Still those types of experiences that I personally had is no excuse for me making such an uncalled for generalization, as I have also encountered Unleashed lovers who are mature and understood my perspective even if they didn't agree with it, and in turn, I learned to become a lot more respectful. I still don't like "Sonic Unleashed", but I'm no longer gonna hold a petty grudge towards it because of how I used to view its fanbase. I let my frustration towards the constant praise it gets day in and day out get to me, and I shouldn't have, nor do I wish to still do so. I need to be better than that. And while I've made some effort to do so, I still have some room for improvement. To the Sonic Unleashed fandom? I'm sorry I generalized ALL of you as pretentious butthurts because of my own experiences. I never went out of my way to personally attack anyone for liking Unleashed/disliking Colors, but I did make an uncalled for generalization, and that's something I need to correct.

I've only played the ds version of Colors a few months ago I was able to play Sonic Colors for the Wii on my Samsung Galaxy s9 on Dolphin I couldn't play the game past Sweet Mountain act 1 so I decided to get a Wii I also have Dolphin on my pc and a lot of games run great on here but I'm not sure if Colors will run

Fuck what everyone says, this game is masterpiece. Though I agree that it’s not perfect, no game is, but in comparison to future games like Colors and Generations, this game offers a lot more and unlike those here I can see the heart and effort put into this game.

The Werehog leves consist of basic platforming are and pretty boring. Sonic's parts are pretty but you don't really have that much control, it's like a glorified version of those FMV games.

Werehog is actually MORE complex and has more metagame than God of War. I love night stages.
It's not bad but in my opinion it's not good either.
I already know sonic unleashed isn't a bad game no game is bad it is just the way people see the game.
