What Success Means To Me as a Minimalist

  • What does success mean to a minimalist? And to you specifically? You may have goals you want to achieve, like owning a house or buying a car. But have you really thought through why you set these goals in the first place?
In this digital age, most of us are drinking from the firehose of information. It is coming in so quickly and in such volume. And the message is pretty consistent: you’re only a success if you’re rich, beautiful, or powerful.
We’re sold on a dream, but is that dream even ours? What if there was another way of defining success?
Too often, we assess our level of success based on other people’s expectations, or by comparing ourselves to others who we feel are ahead of us. However, if you’re going to climb the ladder and overcome all the obstacles along the way, you better make sure you put it against the right wall.
For me, success is having the time, freedom, and calm state of mind to do the things I really care about.
    And for you?

Hi Peter your never wasting your time doing these videos ❤. I finished a degree about 20 years ago and was burnt out 😂 then started earning well and put my own financial plan in place. I'm not super rich financially but around 5 years ago I cut my working hours in half so that I could just take care of myself properly and nurture the few loving relationships I have in life. Minimalism helped me reach the partial removal of myself from the neverending rat race. Keep doing what makes you happy and leave the rest. Love from Scotland xx

I used to think it was things. And to be honest, there is a level of things (a safe and supportive home, a reliable car, etc.) I consider part of my “success” but for me it really comes down to authentic, loving relationships. Nothing is better than having great relationships in your life and knowing you are true to yourself and others. Loving your content!

It doesn't matter what you do or don't do , if it makes you FEEL good without GUILT , it IS good !
Most people feel GUILT , if they are not swetting from activity , we are programmed to be slaves !
Well , I don't give a damn what society thinks , I can sit hours just meditating in the here and now , no past no future , just now .
It makes you aware and connected with life beyond belief .

In so called "primitive cultures" like tribes, success is defined by :
    - The health of the overall community
    - How well you are attendant to the needs of others
    - Self awareness (through vision quests and other rites)
    - Are you a good custodian of the planet and surroundings
    - Have you passed on insights, learnings and stories to future generations
    - Did you live in accordance to the flow of life, or fight against it
In modern society, its based on :
    - Making money (lets look the other way about how we achieve this).
    - Spending money
    - Degree of power and control over others (my charity impacts 30% more people than yours does!)
_ Degree of change we cause to the world (lets not talk about collateral damage to others, after all, the atom bomb changed a lot)
    - Aesthetics

Indeed, Lachlan ✨! For some, chasing large bonuses and promotions might be what they want most in life. And nothing wrong with that, if they really thought it true. But I think some of us are trapped in rat race that, deep down inside, they don't want to be in. Hopefully this video gives them some food for thought!

I've been struggling with this for a long time. Always striving for and chasing what society has deemed "successful," especially money. That often entailed sacrificing my own self-esteem, focus, energy, and even happiness for what I thought would be the "end-all be-all" as you mentioned. Thankfully, I've realized this early on in my life and have now decided to chase what's truly important to me. Thank you so much for the video; you brought a lot of great points. I found this very meaningful.

I've watched your video twice. Yesterday before to go to bed. And this morning when I woke up. Well... I've lost my definition of success recently. As you mentionned, are my dreams mine ? Or are they the dreams of the society... the ego... How do you know ?

    • @IAmPeterCook
      @IAmPeterCook  Před rokem

Hi Melody, that's great that the video resonated with you. You're on the right path. It starts with asking these questions! So many of us set and pursue goals simply because that's what we think we should want, without ever pausing to ask: is this really what I care about? Especially when pursuing those goals that require significant sacrifices, it's important to be intentional about them. I hope you are able to (re)define what success means to you. Good luck! 🙌🏻
