  • Wing Commander: Privateer is the precursor of many open-world space simulators, and was widely praised when it released in the now-distant 1993.
Today, it is still considered an influential title, but given how this genre has almost disappeared, how does it play in 2020? Is a play-through worth while waiting for Star Citizen? Let's find out!

I was in love with Wing Commander and Privateer…
In 1992 thru 1996 or so.
What I can say I remember about Privateer is that I wanted to play it through so bad, but it crashed and lost my save so much I never could.
      😢
      Love the video,

I remember that there is an option to sell all your stock of an item or buy all you can. Holding down ALT or similar while pressing BUY or SELL? No sure anymore. My fingers would surely remember if I was back in the game... flesh memories! ;-)

By the way Privateer 3 actually had a full script written and the game was going into pre-production after Wing Commander Prophecy. Sadly EA saw the FMV budget (Privateer 3 was again going with live action actors) and cancelled the project.

Did Freelancer come out because of that? Man that's a tough one: would you rather have a Prvateer 3 or Freelancer?

Good review. I loved this game back in the day, and I still loved it when I played it again a couple years ago.
If you are looking for a good modern spiritual successor to this game, it has to be Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. I have been playing that game as of late and it brings back so many memories of Privateer.

heh, I was gonna comment that I could have sworn that was an option. I bought this on GOG years ago, but have yet to play it again for some reason.

Nice review! Personal ship preference was topic of heated discussions at school :-)
I loved righteous fire but i think it was super tough and I think I was cheating at some point to be able to finish the story line

The trick with asteroid fields is that you need to reduce your speed, especially with the centurion. You shouldn't be going faster than 300-350.

Privateer is the best game ever. I think the lack of tooltips and a tutorial is good - I played this without a manual and I figured it all out on my own - I knew almost nothing about the game, never played Wing Commander 1 or 2 - and it was all new to me - and I loved every second of this game and best of all - I didn't eve know it had a story - I just randomly went to a place on the star map - and then bam - I just stumbled upon the game story - I think this is the best way to start the main quest - not expecting it, just randomly being there - I played a lot of time, not knowing there was a story, and suddenly - there was a guy in the bar and he had this artifact - it was awesome, it's even better that you are not told what to do next - you meat two new character and you seem to be progressing the story, but suddenly one betrays you and he is gone - and now what ? Again you have to think and travel on your own - by that time, I knew I need to find a new place on the map and analyzed it and found where I needed to go on my own - I was so proud of myself with figuring this out - and I think this is the best way - no hand holding, no arrow pointing to go there - just read your map on your own and figure it out.
Now, I never finished Privateer - back in the day - I didn't know where to go after getting the artifact and I thought you had to fight the alien pod on your own - and boy, did I try, but I only managed to slighly weaken it's shields... and I gave up. Years later I returned armed with knowledge and knew I had to go to a station that I visited earlier and was not allowed to enter to meet with the fleet admiral - but I made a huge blunder - I overrote my main save at a moment when I had no weapons and upgrades on my ship - I sold them because I didn't know where the alien weapon would be installed - it's a long story, but then you are not allowed to dock to a station again or you fail the quest - so I was unprepared for the final fight and again I couldn't beat the game. Still, I don't regret it.
It's funny, Privateer and Resident Evil: Code Veronice are two games that I overrote my save just before the boss fight and had to fight the boss with no ammo - and couldn't win - it was impossible to go back I basically had to start all over again....

Protip - use your right mouse button to sell all the commodities of the same type with one click ;) you can use this for buying also.
For asteroids you should slow down to 250kps. And the game came out on 6 floppies not one.

So chris robert only made 1 game in his life and updated it over and over and over and over. Now we know star Citizen have been developed for 30 years!
I know he have not made only 1 game, he did king king and ultima and some other i dont know but you get my point.
