    ---
    2669, Gemini Sector, Troy System. The Terran frontier between the Kilrathi Empire and the unknown. Privateer takes you to the seamy side of the Wing Commander universe. In the far reaches of space, you live by no man's rules but your own!
    The fringes are populated by a volatile mix of pirates, miners, mercs, cutthroats, and Kilrathi, all struggling to make a life for themselves.
    In this open-ended game you can choose from many paths. You start with a rusted scout ship and a handful of credits in your pocket. It isn't much, but the universe is there for you to explore in search for profitable opportunities. Become a patient, law-abiding merchant, a smuggler far away from the normal space lanes, a pirate preying on the weak, or a professional mercenary hunting down criminal scum. Or just do whatever suits you at the time. At the end of the day, it's all about money and survival. Mostly money.
    Are you determined enough to forge your own destiny?

    I remember limping across the map after having the crap kicked out of me, no com systems left, practically drifting for like an hour until I was close enough to be automatically landed at a base. Good times.

    The concept seems interesting. In addition, as it takes place in the Wing Commander universe, it really makes me want to play it. Thanks for this video !

    I played the game when I was a kid. It was almost perfect for the times. I'm italian so games like this helped me with my school english. When Privateer 2 came without subtitles, it was a nightmare. I was way too young to enjoy the game trying to understand dialogs only by hearing. Anyway, lots of love for Privateer franchise!
    EDIT: I just remember that I played also Strike Commander that had the same structure (planes/ships + base/planets + upgrades + dialogs and a really good story). Thanks Origin Systems!

    I forgot how small was the usable screen : you almost don't see anything during combat ^^
    But so many found memories of this game.

    I still have a working copy of this :) this person ain’t used to the controls as the shields were shut down but I remember a time when I got royally messed up in this very ship what saved my ass was a trick I picked up using homing missiles, with 2 launchers and 2 or more missiles of the same type, you can fire 2 at once when using a joystick by pressing and holding the thumb button and squeezing the trigger, the repair droid I had saved my butt from a VERY expensive bill for repairs, and I was able to get back under way fully operational but all shot up

    Enemy has no front shields, no left or right shields, no rear shields, every section taking major damage. Nearly destroyed.
    Also enemy: suck void buddy.

    Is it just me or is the depiction of the protagonist just a slick version of Dirk Benedict? I´ve been thinking this since I´ve played Privateer for the very first time, back in 93 or 94.

      Yes and it was kinda hard to play with keyboard! Cause i could not get my joystick work without severe problems in this game with dosbox! But i'm also been playing a Privateer Remake on modern computer! There are two version remake and gemini gold! privateer.sourceforge.net/

      @LinuxDos Před 4 lety

      @@thriftweeds We can also play this remake of Wing Commander Privateer on the Linux operating system. Maybe if you play on DosBox under Linux you will have less problem with your joystick.

      @@LinuxDos The thing was back then i used broken CH Flightstick joystick (game port version) with bad potentiometers Windows XP, now everything works with Win10 USB joystick , but Dosbox has still some limitations if you have to raise high like 15000-20000+ cycles joystick becomes unstable. PCem works better if not then the only option is to use real HW (386-486 pentium) to get best control. I never get used to linux commands all hebrew to me i only learned MS-DOS. I have one easy-to-use tiny distro on one laptop i use thoso ones that fit on bootable USB stick.

    • @LinuxDos
      @LinuxDos Před 4 lety

      @@thriftweeds You don't have to know Linux commands to use Linux. This is a common idea probably because tutorials for Linux are mainly offered with command lines. In reality this simplifies the help since it suffices to copy and paste the commands in the terminal without having to download software. The reason is also that the solution applies to all versions of Linux. There is also PCem on Linux. Otherwise yes the ideal is 486, Pentium etc.

    I see they replace your target screen with the enemy talking to you, which is very annoying. star citizen does the same thing

    Great universe and after this they attempted Privateer Online and a lot of the concepts for that went into Star Wars Galaxies.
    Too bad the WC universe got swallowed up by Chris Roberts being crazy and EA destroying its good IPs and studios.
