  • Taking a look back at the 1990 space combat game that redefined the genre, Wing Commander! Getting it to run correctly may be a tough nut to crack, but it's worth it to play this Origin classic.

My favorite thing about Wing Commander is that when the game was about to ship, somehow a bug crept in that caused the game to crash and leave an error message every time you tried to exit. They couldn't track the bug down or suppress the error message because it relied on third party software. So what they were forced to do, two days before the game shipped, was compile the game first, then go in the binary code and look for the text of the error message. Once they found where that error message was in the code, they changed the text to read "Thank you for playing Wing Commander!"

So the game has quite a depressing plot - humanity has finally discovered catgirls in space, but they are hostile.

I remember when my friend got "expanded memory" for his PC and I got to experience the "full" Wing Commander experience; The moving hand on the control stick!

When I worked at Origin in 93 on the customer service / help desk, I would have many people who would call and ask if there was any way to not die in the simulator at the beginning of the game. They almost seemed sad when I told them, it was suppose to work that way and it was not something they could change.

Thinking back to those old PC games, the amount of swag you would get in the box was amazing. Miss those days.

I remember having my ship wrecked, without weapons, radar, after destroying an enemy mothership, flying minutes to skip a waypoint where I could meet more enemies ships and complete the mission with success. The game allowed this kind of freedom on how to play.

The fact that this game is about humans fighting cat-like aliens made me realize how cool a Man-Kzinti War game would be.

I remember fondly having spent many hours in gameplay till the point that I had become almost one with the gameplay in nailing every enemy ship. This was a fun game to play and was quite advanced at the time as compared to many other games of its type on the market. Your gameplay conjures many a fond memory. Thank you for sharing. :)

If bowl cuts is the biggest complaint of the 90's....that has to tell you something.

One of the most compelling aspects of the game was this: In the storyline, you would enter a new area and essentially be given a wing mate for two or three missions. If your wingman died in combat, but you made it home, you would continue the game WITHOUT that wingman. Any cut scenes that needed that character would not have them. It might be impossible to actually complete the next missions without them, but some missions were so hard, you really didn't want to have to try them again. That sense of loss that you actually go on after your comrade dies was wonderfully immersive. Also, the wingmen had unique AI and some were amazing an some were abysmal. It was so far ahead if it's time, and so few games have matched certain aspects of the gameplay even today.

Never played Wing Commander, but I played the hell out of it's spin-off Privateer. One of the greatest games ever made.

Wing Commander really did age well. Like wow, it's still impressive to watch those cut scenes!

I still remember the giddy feeling the 12 year old me got back in 1992 when I played this, my first ever taste of a PC game on my fathers faithful 286. As I watched my first mission briefing and then ran to my ship my eyes couldn't comprehend what I was seeing; is this a movie or a game I thought?! I don't think I ever powered up my megadrive again. PC gaming was back then, and still is now the only way.

Memories of when things we consider simplistic now, were awe inspiring. Hobbes rules!

That feeling when you realise you have already watched this episode a year ago, but LGR is so good you keep watching anyway.
