  • Time for an unboxing! In this video, I open my first Schmincke gouache paints, gifted to me by my mom :D I have so little experience painting people in gouache, so I am still very much in that learning curve. I do apologize for the quality of the video - all of the speedpaint portions were horribly overexposed, but I cleaned them up as best as possible.

🥰🥰 Thank you so much. It is so tricky to do skin. I'm terrified of hair 😂

YAAASSSS gouache!! Aw yess, beaten up boy :D Honestly you did a good job with this, because I forgot about the overexposure instantly and didn't notice for the whole video. The only flaw is not enough kitty cameos :p

I loved your video and your Blob description. Sounds like you are real and authentic. LOL! I liked the way you are starting with the thin layers of glazes. I'm familiar with Acrylics from years ago. Professional illustrator Gouache Artist, Alex Rowe, always starts with thin glazes and he explained that its not true that gouache has to be used totally heavily opaque and always lightened with white. He said you can use it transparently like watercolor if you want or opaquely. It's 30 percent more opaque than watercolor but more highly pigmented. So, you can use both ways. You just do whatever works for you. The best of both worlds. I just finished a portrait of my husband sitting on rocks in the shade by a lake on black watercolor paper. Since the reference had so much dark in it, I used Gouache and took advantage of the dark of the paper.

Oh that sounds like an amazing portrait! I have black watercolor paper now that I haven't tried yet, but I'm so excited about playing with gouache on it! I also just looked up Alex Rowe and their work is incredible! So many intricate details 🤩 Thank you for bringing them to my attention! I will definitely be staring at these pieces when I need a kick to pull out the gouache again (which I do) 😊

I use gouache and water color paint together for the very reason you discussed.

I really need to give that mixed approach a try still.

this is the first video of yours that I see and honestly I love it I just think you’re a little too hard on yourself you’re an amazing artist I know someone who’s been painting with gouache for over two years this is still a really good piece

Thank you, Maria. I really appreciate that. I am actually starting to work on being kinder to myself and build a healthier relationship with my art and expectations for it. I know I'm overly critical of myself and it's something I need to work on 💙
