  • Let's take a look at the Schmincke Horadam Gouache and see how it compares to my other gouache. I'll do some color swatches, color mixing, and a test painting and share my thoughts about the colors and performance.
As a reference point, usually I use Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache and more recently Shinhan Designer's Gouache.

When I was 4, I had a best friend who lived down the street. She had one of those big, cheap tins with lots of watercolors (1950’s). We would go to her room and mix those paints for hours. Every time we had some weird gray mixture, we would intone, “Ah, the final touch!” and mix a bunch of some new color in. We never actually painted, but just spent hours mixing colors, which fascinated our 4-year-old selves. That’s how I learned how to mix colors.

Yes, please do the direct comparison! I have tubes of W&N gouache, but haven’t had the courage to dive in to gouache painting yet (one reason I love watching your videos!). I do have Schmincke pan watercolors, which are amazingly pigment dense. I would love to see your W&N vs. Schmincke gouache comparison 😁

I definitely want to see a video of both sets of guaches used together. As for replicating your current W&N colors in the Schminke for comparison, I personally would be more interested in something like a set that rounds out the Schminke ones you have to something like a set of warm/cool set of primaries that fit your style, plus maybe 2 more. Perhaps a maximum of about eight would really illustrate how much you (that is to say one) can do with that limited set in a good brand.

Oh, I can absolutely relate to the feeling of getting new colours and just LOVING them, it's the best! As much as I love creating polished finished work, I also just absolutely adore colour mixing and seeing what happens, it's the most fun and just makes me so happy... It doesn't remind me of a date (I've never really dated much) so much as when I was a kid in the 90s getting a new playset for xmas, like a Lego castle or a Little Pet Shop and taking them out of the packaging and starting to make up stories about them.... that's a lot what getting new colours feels like. 🤩 This palette absolutely suits your style and I can see why'd you be in love with it so fast! Gosh those neutrals are so pleasant!!

    Beautiful!
I've been thinking about the idea of being inspired by the colours on your palette lately. I've avoided my watercolours for a long time. I told myself that it was because I hadn't learned how to use them yet, but then I randomly bought a hot pink and suddenly fell in love with just playing. A few more "just cuz they're pretty" colours later and I'm playing with my watercoulours all the time and realizing that I hate the "recommended" palette I've been avoiding for nearly 5 years. I think you need a balance of colours you love and useful colours, but I'm having so much more fun with watercolours now that I'm starting with fun colours and slowly (very slowly) figuring out what colours I can add to get a good mix of colours for the type of paintings I'm currently enjoying.
Speaking of gorgeous colours, that helio turquoise is on my wish list!

Paused early to like for Floki 💙 Thank you so much for this! I've been curious about Schmincke gouache for some time now, but I haven't needed to replace my Holbein just yet. Our color choices would be similar (I need my cool red), so this is *super* helpful. Delft blue is Schmincke's indanthrone blue (PB60), which is one of my essentials. I would love to see comparisons between your brands and also how well it dries and reconstitutes in your new palette, if it's not too much trouble. Delft blue looks like indanthrone (and I suppose it is pb60). A must have colour in any medium in my opinion 💙

Hi there, new subscriber coming from Nataha Newton last video 😊 I love Horadam Gouache so much! For me they're far superior from the long neck tube design preventing spills to the paint consistency which is always top. I have many W&N gouache and some of them just keep separating, even after I mix the binder in I get occasional shiny spots and sticky finishes. The only other gouache I think is comparable to Horadam is Holbein, but given their price and the size of their tubes Horadam is a clear winner. Funny enough Titanium gold Ochre and Helio Turquoise were my first tubes (Helio Turquoise is also a favourite in their watercolour). You may want to try mixig the English Red with white too, it mixes very pretty muted pinks.

After 10+ years of watercolor experience I got gouache from Schmincke, and love it. Delft blue (which is anthraquinone blue, btw) is very deep and has an almost petroleum opalescence. Their watercolor version is quite similar, but not that impressive.
Although gouache is fun, gouache technique still breaks my brains.

I’m loving the schmincke gouache so much, except the white. And I was super surprised by the Shinhan gouache which I got at the same time. Both are permanent in my collection.

I started with Scmincke and have been filling in with W&nlN ( cheaper). I so loved the Delft blue, us there an alternate in W&N. I bought the W&N Prussian, but it's too green. Anythoughts? Nice Vid!

I’ve never personally tied it (yet) but I heard that Holbein gouache is amazing. Maybe you can test a couple tubes of that in with all the others lol!!! And I absolutely love the colors that you chose! Gorgeous palette! 💕 I say it all the time but again, thank you for all your efforts…I love your videos… from the paintings and tutorials, to the wonderful views of Scotland you share with us through your wonderful videography skills!!

I used Holbein a loooooooong time ago! It was nice - very nice. But after a year or so, my tubes got really hard. Some people said this might have been due to the old design, but I'm not sure. It sucked

    Hey Sarah :)
I was very curious about how you'd react to the Schmincke Horadam Gouache!
Till now I only own a few of them but a lemon-y yellow it very far up on my list of "neeeeeed it soon".
Loved seeing some colors I don't own being swatched! Also yes please to comparisons. :>

I knew you would love Horadam Gouache. I haven't tried every single brand of gouache, but the minute I tried those out, I decided not to buy anything else. It would be interesting to see what you think when you compare them to W&N.

delft blue (sometimes called danish or dutch blue) was created by calcinating cobalt ore with quartz sand and potash- an extremely expensive process for artisans of the time. using paint grinding windmills, dutch artists would create the paint to decorate various porcelain vessels used for tableware.
Delft Blue earthenware has been produced in the city of Delft since the 17th century. Between 1600 and 1800.
    Lovely color

  • @samantharankinstinamisan5583

Yes, you are pronouncing Delft Blue correctly. My Mother loves the Delft blue dishes (always has), therefore I grew up listening to her talk about them!! They are named after the city in the Netherlands where the dishes are made...

    Schmincke Gouache ♡
I never bought them because they are more expensive... But I always liked Schmincke as a brand and I ordered some acrylic paints last week. Maybe one day.. I'm going to test their gouache and try to paint a lot with it as well. I really like the Schmincke products and maybe I should be more supportive and buy something since it is a local brand to me.

Yea the price is a bit...ouch! But you only need a few tubes. I ordered unique colors since I already own all the other colors in my other brands. I love the colors I chose and super happy with them!

@@SarahBurnsStudio I only would get 2 or 3 tubes first and collect what I need over. But the price really hurts if you need a complete set with all the colors you want to use. At least I made notes about what I would use a lot and I always wanted to try that titanium gold ochre. It is such a lovely warm ochre shade. I like my ochre on the warm side so this will be the perfect earth yellow for me.
