We start of with an explanation what Gouache is and the difference between it and Acrylics as well as Tempera.
Then we take a look at the supplies you need to work with Gouache.

Hear in the U.K. I buy my Winsor and newton designer gouache from Jackson’s. The price range from £4.50 to £7.50 a tube. My watercolour paints costs way more. You are right, if you use watercolour, you will like gouache. You can use both together in one painting. Wonderful.

I know, mixed media is really underrated! Sticking to on medium is great for practice, but mixing them up is the most fun for me :)

Hey Carol, thank you for your feedback! Back then I was very new to editing videos and nowadays I show content and lists like this in a different way, so I don't think you have to worry about the blurring for future videos 😀. I am glad you found it helpful and welcome to the channel! :)
Actually you can reactivate (high quality) watercolour too but only a little bit. If the spot is light and opaque you can pick a clean brush and clean (!) water and water the spot again, then pick it up with a drier brush or a cloth. The biggest problem here is that you can easily get a darker outline in the spot so make sure to gradually water the edges too. It does need some practice and works best if it’s not completely dry.
Just an idea if you really messed up and want to try to rescue it :) Also watercolour dries lighter and acrylic dries darker. I’m completely new to gouache so that video is really helpful :)
You seem to have the patience one needs to work with watercolors, that’s great! Thank you for adding your advice.
Your detailed tips just described one of the main reasons I tried Gouache back then: I was waaaay too impatient and easily frustrated when working with watercolors. Thankfully after almost two years of practise I can now enjoy them again and give them the time they need to work properly. I hope you are having a great time with Gouache, it is really an allrounder and a lovely mixed media medium. :)

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if you noticed any chalky/cheap effect on these paints once dried, as some reviewers have mentioned in other videos.
Hey Pax! They have a unique texture once dry, a bit chalkier as other gouache as far as I can tell. But when you run your hands over it, the paint stays in place and there is no residue. Whether you consider it a cheap effect depends on how you plan to use it I think. I find it great with mixed media pieces and for painting in my sketchbook, but if you want a nice piece you can hang up the wall you should probably varnish it for a nicer look.

I've only used Royal Talens gouache so far and wanted to know (more or less) how they'd compare with the Schmincke's Akademie line. So, would you recommend them for a hobbyist? I'm mostly worried about streaks and patches you usually see in student brands, besides the chalky surfaces.
@@TheKafkianProcess Unfortunately I haven't used the Royal Talens Gouache yet and can't compare them in detail, I have however seen them in my research before I decided on Schmincke.
I don't experience any patches and due to the large tubes I don't feel compelled to save paint, which is what usually leads to streakiness in my paintings - trying to save paint. Only vermillon red has streakiness and pigment size issues (small clumps of pigments stick together and dry that way on my paintings). Otherwise they have a very consistent and flat lay. Especially when I see other brands I am surprised how opaque the Akademie is. If you mix it properly and use mixed media brushes, I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with them!
I had seen that Schmincke Akademie gouache is not a true gouache and that it resembles a mix of acrylic and normal gouache and hence why they sell them in 60ml tubes. I read from the brand that they use this to help beginners to not get too frustrated with the layers reactivating but still make it feel like normal gouache. What are your thoughts on that? is it accurate? Does the dried paint reactivate in the palette without any difficulties like traditional gouache does ?

Thanks so much for your input, I have not heard about that so far. I searched on the Schmincke website, the product data sheet and my retailers website, but couldn't find a mention of an acrylic component. If you stumble upon a link, I'm always interested in gouache components 🤓
About your questions:
Whilst painting, there is no problem with that at all. Even after a small break you can reactivate the paint on the paper with no problem.
However: In the beginning I had a small air tight palette (or so I thought), in which I placed some paint from the tubes. I quickly changed it back to painting directly from the tubes, because you can indeed hardly reactive the paint from the palette. It dried up completely and would reactivate eventually, but not remotely in the consistency it has in the tubes. Small dried pieces of gouache would then be stuck in my painting. Even after a longer break from painting that problem can occur with the paint outside of the tube.

@@FrancisArtStudio Ah yes then that was what I meant. Normal gouache will reactivate without problems no matter how long it has been dried even though it will result in a little bit more watery paint and this one is different. If I can find where I saw the things about the formulation I'll leave a link or something.
Edit: I've been searching and I can't find exactly where I read that, it was a few years ago and I think it was some forum where someone had emailed schmincke and that was the response. I only were able to find that Akademie's gouache uses polyvinyl resin as a binder instead of gum arabic and that might be why it is not suited for re wetting a palette.
I'd say that Akademie's gouache is a mix between traditional gouache and acrylic gouache

@@loati94 i dont know if i would say that all other true gouaches rewet perfectly, bc that is 100% not true. They are not as reactivateable as watercolor, they will not get back to the same consistency as they are straight out of the tube. At leadt not for turner, holbein, or winsor and newton. M. Graham uses honey so maybe they are different i will know in two days when i get some in the mail.
But what you say about the resin is definitely something a bit different, good to know.
@@glumsulk I didn't say anywhere the other gouaches rewet perfectly as out of the tube I literally say they rewet without problems but watery so I don't know why are you trying to correct me by saying the same thing I did. I am not comparing brands of normal gouache, just normal gouache to akademie hence why I say they rewet with no problems, since akademie doesn't even rewet once completely dried to begin with.
I never compared them to watercolor nor said they rewet like watercolor.
Also, if you let your dried out traditional gouache in water 5 min they can get to a pretty creamy consistency or even with a little more patience reconstitute them and get them to a similar consistency as out of the tube. ( I have done so with holbein, talens and W&N)
Again, you can't do so with akademie
I’ve used artists gouache and the colour shift on drying is almost nothing.

Hey Rodrigo, that is not how it's supposed to be. Sometimes, when stored for a long time in one position, some of the fluid collects towards the ground and the pigment separates. Try storing it top up for some time. Hope it helps!
Hello this brand schmince academi. Is it durable? My job is to engrave on stone, wood and glass. Can I engrave my name on stone after engraving? I use this product because I used to use a magic pen to see the name after the name was engraved, but the color would fade after a while. Based on your experiences, will this product remain stable in the face of water? Thank you, I am from Iran
Hey there! Thanks for your interesting question!
Gouache is definitely not water resistant. It will instantly dissolve when in contact with water, especially rain.
The confusing thing about Schmincke is, that there is "Schmincke Akademie: Gouache" as well as "Schmincke Akademie: Acrylics" and you definitely want to go with acrylics for outdoor use!
Doesn't haven to be from Schmincke, but you should use acrylics (i did another video on acrylics, it might be helpful for this).
If you want the paint to last even longer, you can seal the painted parts with something called "varnish" or "fixative".

I think gouache is a very easy medium to blend and it doesn’t change colors between dry and wet depending on the brand. I also don’t think that you waste much at all.
Since posting this video I found out that the Schmincke Akademie Gouache seems to have part acrylic binder. Maybe that's why I am still to this day having trouble blending 🤔 Glad to hear Gouache works out well for you! 🤗Do you have a favorite brand?
I use Royal Talens Designers high quality Gouache
My art supply store has them in store now as well, just a year ago the Gouache selection was really limited. It's a nice thing that they are so popular now!

I just bought Schminke gouache paints and i've found them really disappointing compared to Windsor and Newton. The colours are very one dimensional and hard to work with.
Hi Jay! Winsor and Newton Gouache seems to have their own category regarding quality, but also price. I have yet to try them, but from what I hear they must be pretty good. I'm sorry to hear that Schmincke isn't working for you. Did you go with the Akademie or Designer's Gouache from Schmincke?
