    The Akademie range is vegan. So the black is not PBk9 but rather PBk6. :) The Akademie paints are quite easy found open stock in Germany/Austria.

    For those in the US who are interested in these paints, Schmincke makes an advent calendar that contains the full set pluss one horadam paint. It is available on Amazon for about 40 dollars. You need to get a tin. But after watching this video and other research it feel it is a good starting point for Schmincke paints and you could add single stock horadam paints

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes! I agree! That's how I got my Akademie paints. However, the Calendar comes with 23 Akademie halfpans and one Horadam full pan. It doesn't come with the full set (which is why I ended up not having the Akademie Payne's Grey). I have a video where I open and showcase the Advent calendar from a previous year in my archive, too! :)

    I never even knew of the student range and never have seen them in a store. Thanks for all the information. Very much appreciated.

      i believe akademie is distributed by grumbacher in the us under grumbacher academy ? hence not many people in the us dont really know about the line :D

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 4 lety +1

      Grumbacher Academy is not the same as Schmincke Akademie. You can read more about the Grumbacher/Schmincke thing here : www.chartpak.net/schmincke

      They are very difficult to find in stores here in North America. It's much easier to find the professional range :)

    While Schmincke Akademie is easy to find here in Germany, I would rather go the extra Mile and start out with Horadam right away. The paints have a nicer flow in my opinion, maybe because of the oxgall.
    The Akademie paints are quite pricey for a student range and there are other choices if you simply want to try out watercolors like Van Gogh or White Nights.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Před 4 lety +8

      The reason why Akademie can have a good appeal is for us outside of Germany. There's often a really nice Holiday palette of 12 Akademie paints released every year and it's a bit easier to acquire, and quite affordable. And the tins are really lovely :)

    I bought a tin of akademie but ... for the tin ... I use mostly Horadam and was on the fence if I should keep the Akademie or just sell them. But after watching this, I will keep these for my sketchbook, I can even do color mixing with the Akademie as so many colors use the same pigments.
    Thank you!

    The 24 set of Akademie and the 24 of Horadam are only $40 difference. While I love to hear that there is barely any difference, i see the Naples yellow and Naples yellow reddish difference you noted and the Horadam 24 doesn’t have the Naples yellow reddish only the original Naples yellow and as a portrait artist I need both lol. For only $40 I’m glad there’s not much difference but if I was going to spend over $100 for a palette I may as well spend the other $40 and get the professional. I tried Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle and wasn’t impressed. Their professional line is much much better although they’re not my most favorite. This is my next big watercolor purchase and I’m grateful for the review and knowing that there’s little difference in either one I choose.

    I just recently reviewed the two new special edition sets and the Carmine seems to be a lot more muted professional grade and I noticed that the botanical set has Saturn red which is a fugitive color. The sepia brown is also much more chalky than the professional grade while lemon ultramarine Mae green and Quinn gold remained very close to professional grade I could not tell the difference

      It's really a matter of your personal preference. If you love Daniel Smith and are happy with them, you can save up to buy some more. There's no good or bad paint here, just whatever one you prefer to use :)

    I wish I had access to Akademie watercolors! I’ve been wanting to buy horadams but alas, they’re wayyyy out of my price range lol. Academie watercolors are a bit cheaper, but I can’t seem to find them in the US. *sigh

      Not sure what your budget is but you could order from Jackson’s, a lot of American artists do. They are doing 3 x 15ml schminke tubes (2 different sets) for $22 (link below) - I built my schmincke set up by ordering one or two pans at a time. Took me a few months but I now have an 18 pan set.
